Shanahan: McNabb will start, Haynesworth 'getting better'

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan on Monday said that quarterback Donovan McNabb will play against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night in the regular season opener, and that he believed defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is "getting better" as he continues to learn two new positions.

McNabb missed the Redskins' final two preseason games with an ankle injury and his status for the opener was reported to be up in the air. However, Shanahan again dismissed any doubts.

"He's ready to go," Shanahan said.

Shanahan spoke a bit more in depth regarding Haynesworth, though he did not give any indication about what the defensive tackle's role might be on Sunday night.

Asked about Haynesworth's performance against the Cardinals in which Haynesworth remained in the game through the fourth quarter and played 49 of 55 defensive snaps, Shanahan edged around publicly evaluating Haynesworth's performance. Instead, he spoke about the continued work he believes Haynesworth needs to catch up on after missing much of the offseason workouts.

"I don't go through a lot of detail but anytime a person plays the defensive end position and nose position, it takes some time -- it doesn't happen overnight," Shanahan said. "He played a lot of plays,; I thought he did a good job, considering he played as many plays as he did do at a couple different positions. And not having the reps some of the other players had at it, it was work that was well needed and he played hard."

Shanahan said that Haynesworth was "in much better shape now than he was before" and that he believes the All-Pro is beginning to adjust to the new techniques needed in a 3-4 front.

"As I said, it's just not the effort, you got to get used to the technique," Shanahan said. "So when you play a couple different positions it's going to be tough, that's just part of it. But he worked hard and made a few mistakes here and there but he's getting better."

Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said Haynesworth did play snaps with both the first- and second-string defenses on Monday, as well as the team's nickel packages. "He's starting to come around," Haslett said.

"The more he's out there, the better he gets; the better understanding of the defense," he said. "That's why he played all those reps the past couple of weeks."

Well you're a beast and most Skins fans (even the ones who say they hate you and want you cut) are hoping you redeem yourself by ripping Romo's head clear off of his spine and shoving it up Dez Bryant's cracked out poo butt week 1.

This is good news. Way to take the high road Mike Shanahan. What a way to stick to your guns and complement the hundred million dollar man at the same time. Lets put all this behind us and BEAT THE COWBOYS. Then pick it back up next week (just kidding).

I watched it and there were quite a few plays where Albert half assed and even quarter assed it. I didn't focus solely on him so I shouldn't speak for his overall performance but what I saw wasn't Albert's best that's for sure.

Fair enough. It probably wasn't his best given the nature of the game played. However, I am wondering how one will measure any of the Dline performances when their primary responsibility is to occupy Olinemen and not truly make plays.

Theisman commented during the game that Albert was not giving it his all. But then again, why should he? It was a meaningless game and he played almost every defensive snap. Why risk injury when most of your teammates (other than guys not starting and who were getting cut) did not even suit up?

While I realize it would have made Albert look great to the coaching staff and fans if he had went all out, it's obvious Albert wanted to just get through the game injury free - which is fine by me. I'm sure he was a bit pissed off by having to play the whole game but he did not even comment after the game.

WOW, thats all I can say. Shanahan didnt mention anything about multiple sources saying that AH showed no effort in the LAST PRESEASON game. Keep stirring the pot Jason, maybe one day you'll get it right. Washington would be better served having more positive and objective reporting.

Anyone who's seen this guy play in Tennessee from 2002-2006 and here in 2009 could say the same thing about any game of his they've seen. I'm 100% certain the only way you'll get a dogged and consistent effort from this fat loaf is if you sign him to a series of 1-year contracts. This clown has no pride...he plays for money and money alone. So Shanahan pulling out all the stops probably won't help...it's the capologist that needs to get creative...

A couple of more things from Shanny's presser.

1. Dlinemen probably will play 50% of the snaps in a rotational basis.

2. The team didn't seriously persue TJ Houshmenzadeh.

With or without the melodrama, newspapers are dying.

"That's the message from the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations, an independent firm that checks the average circulation of various print periodicals. The average drop of newspaper circulation nationally was 8.7 percent. This was somewhat smaller than the last quarterly audit, which showed an average circulation drop of 10.6 percent, but the circulation figures were bad enough."

Could it be that the lackadaisical performance is AH still learning how to play in this defense (Haynesworth fault I know). Shanny mentioned that it not only how hard he's going but the technique he used. I interpret that AH was thinking on the field to play the way the team wants him to play. P Daniels said a similar thing, saying that AH is getting better with his hand placement and rushing the passer the way they want him to. Again all this learning now is Haynesworth's fault because of time missed, but it seems that Shanny was indeed comfortable with the effort AH gave.

My guess is that J Reid's "source" was actually Jason La Canfora - former Skins Post beat reporter and current NFL Network reporter. LaCanfora may or may not have heard "rumors" and passed the info onto Reid who of course ran with it because how could LaCanfora be wrong????

Just my theory due to LaCanfora reporting something along the same lines about Haynesworth earlier in the week.

Then, of course, ESPN started spreading the rumor....

Does the Pope sh!T in the woods?

It's still early but Boise appears to be more talented. Ryan Williams is the best player on the field and he's a non factor.

These guys are left to report what others are reporting and at the end of the day nobody knows what's going on. Consider it a welcome change from the Zorn era.

It's not "reporting" when you're writing something that (1) hasn't happened and (2) won't happen. This is fiction. And don't blame the Post's lack of professional standards on Mike Shanahan.

Thoughts on Kellan Moore? Seems heady but his arm strength doesn't look NFL caliber to me.

Mock draft updates....

All the mocks I've seen have us taking 4 different people, either mark ingram, julio jones or an OLB opposite orakpo

Thoughts????

I say sign jackson either via trade or sign him in FA then draft ingram

"Shanahan said that Haynesworth was "in much better shape now than he was before" and that he believes the All-Pro is beginning to adjust to the new techniques needed in a 3-4 front."

Stop referring to Haynesworth as an “All-Pro”. He did not sniff the pro-bowl last year. Until he actually does make the pro-bowl with the Skins, he is simply a lineman.
