Shanahan mum on Albert Haynesworth's status

Albert Haynesworth's ankle is healthy and the defensive lineman could return to the field this Sunday at St. Louis. But Coach Mike Shanahan won't guarantee anything. Haynesworth spent Week 2 on the inactive list.

While Haynesworth participated fully in practice Friday for the second straight day, fellow nose tackle Anthony Bryant, who played in Haynesworth's place against the Texans, missed his second day of practice. Bryant suffered a concussion at Wednesday's practice and will not play in Sunday's game, Shanahan said.

Even though Haynesworth and Bryant are the only nose tackles behind Maake Kemoateu, Shanahan said Haynesworth won't necessarily be on the active roster Sunday.

"You could go with five or six [linemen] or a combination of different people," Shanahan said. "Jim [Haslett], in his history has gone with five defensive linemen. We've gone with six all through preseason [and] the regular season games. It obviously depends on what our game plan is."

Haynesworth suffered an ankle sprain in practice in the days leading up the
Houston game. He missed the game and was limited in practice on Wednesday.

There are several other lingering question marks for Sunday's game:

At left guard, even the players aren't certain who will start against the Rams. Derrick Dockery started the first two games, but Kory Lichtensteiger has also been playing and saw increased time in Week 2.

"I don't know yet," Dockery said after practice Friday. "We'll see. ...I'm not concerned. I just go out and play hard."

Dockery said his practice reps were the same as previous weeks.

"We'll have a game plan each week and we'll let them know before the game," said Shanahan. "Both guys will be ready to go. The competition is very close there."

Safety Chris Horton and receiver Anthony Armstrong were limited at Friday's practice. Shanahan said he'd make decisions on both Sunday, though Armstrong said he'll be ready to play on Sunday.

"It felt good," the first-year receiver said after Friday's practice. "I'll be ready to roll."

Safety Kareem Moore, who missed the team's first two games with a knee injury, participated fully for the third straight practice.

"I don't know if anybody's 100 percent but I think for missing as many weeks as he has, he's had a heck of a week of practice," Shanahan said.

If there are still position battles why did so many sit out the fourth pre-season game. We seemed to be the only team in the league that sat ALL of our "starters"

"Shanahan mum on Albert Haynesworth's status"

What's cool is that 'mum' spelled backwards is still mum.

What's not cool is that threads about Albery Haynesworth, like the spelling of 'mum' are always the same no matter hwo you look at them.

I'd like to know, why a guy who hasn't really contributed so far this year gets so much press?

I second this.... But Kareem Moore's status sound like something to get excited over, I always thought dude could ball from day one. He always got interceptions in previouse years pre and regular season.

Can't see Big Al not playing this week. With Anthony Bryant out, there are few other backup options. Going against Steven Jackson, Haslett will need Haynesworth out there.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/peter_king/09/24/game.plan/1.html

Peter King article about Clay Matthews coming from nothing in college to a complete beast in the pros.

Huh, I really really hate to call "PED" on this one but dude came from USC, and is fairly close to Cushing.

I understand football players blooming late but how can you go from 8 starts in 4 years of college to what he's doing now over the course of...a year?

I like Clay Matthews a TON, he's flat out awesome to watch on TV. It just makes you wonder, and it's unfortunate that you have to wonder, but if you didn't then you're naive to the situation.

regarding Haynesworth playing status, Shanahan would never show his hand either way but I sense he's done with Albert as I posted the other day. I reached that conclusion while watching his press conf. on csn. evey question Shanny took his hands never left the podium until someone asked about 92. his demeanor changed and he rubbed his cheek while talking. I'm no Lt. Colombo but he was not comfy regarding the situation. oh yeah, there's just one more thing....10-6 or bust

Two Thoughts:

1) The second I saw that I thought "MS Stupid, the latest OS offering from Microsoft..."

2) Shanny 2 SB rings thus far, Hanynesworth 0. Nuff said.

Seriously though. Shanahan went through the same basic thing w/ Trevor Pryce in Denver. Pryce realized Shanahan was trying to make him better and help the team. Hopefully AH92 will as well.

Shanny is a fool if he doesn't play albert. The d is givin up tons of yds. U wouldn't need to blitz as many guys if Al is doubled all game. Runnin up the middle would be a no go and the rookie would have pressure up the middle. Als by far the best pass rusher we have. Drop the ego and play him..u just blew a 17 pt lead by over aggresive blitzing leavin doughty one on one with Johnson with cost us the game.

And how about the dumb play call where we tried to throw deep on 3rd down from the 34. Run the ball on a draw or a 3 yd slant to make it a 47 yarder instead of 52 and we win the game. Play Albert you can't trade him..can't cut him. Let him shine against this terrible offense so he builds confidence and repoir with the team and it also ends the media fiekd day every week. Now shanny is the one causing the distractions. He's practicing and playn nose. ..just what u asked. Lose the chip off ur shoulder Shanny. This isn't Denver. @DGreen28bestever,
being a coach has got to be tough in the NFL. trust Shanahan with this AH situation. remember last year when one player challenged the coaches authority without consequence a domino effect ensued and soon there was no team, no direction, no discipline, nothing... just because the players are saying the right thing to the media regarding AH doesn't mean that's the sentimnt inside the locker room. Shanahan has this team more focused and fit than I've seen in a long time if he lets someone half arse it in practie and take jabs during media sessions the rest of those spoiled millionaires are sure to follow suit. this team will win or lose without #92 but it will remain a team led by a wise coach. we've played two games and have 1 qtr our victory total from last year. Parley vous 10-6?

We were 14-2 in '83, in '82 we were 8-1 division champs.

We were a 12-4 wild card in '86, the following year we went 11-4 and won it all.

We were 14-2 in '91 but were only 10-6 in '90.

@nflorida1 I'm with u on the team b4 individual stuff....but when I'm at fedex watchn the boys on our 13..(season tix finally) 3rd and 4ish and 92 off the field..our best rusher off the field...during THE GAME,,...I scratch my head..last week if haynesy is on the end then schaubb can't roll to the right all day to gouge us for 500 yds. Plus u don't need to blitz as many guys which leaves help for doughty who can't stay with anyone..thank God Moore is back.

Its a fact al won't get as many tackles sacks and glory at nose..we brought him n to help our 4 3 scheme...how many H O F NTs are there?? None so I see his irritation in being moved. He's complied...he's clearly in shape..a top 3 rusher when healthy..its hurting the team and for what?? To prove a point? Our schedule is to tough to be "grounding" our best D player....This week we hafta win. We r a better team with him on the fiedl...pretty black and white to me..if u want INSTANT results play him..if u wanna build character and team warm fuzzies inside bench him so the rookie has time to throw unless we send 8 guys every play and further make our normal perrinial top 5 D look like garbage...As for me I'm outta patience..play our best guys bottom line.

DGreen,
first great name, my all time favorite as well. him and Joe Jacoby. second did you not see AH taking his own angles trying to get penetration (peter Griffen's voice) hehehehehehe. he looked out of place on almost every snap he played. you think Shanny might have noticed that. maybe in the back of D Hall's mind he's thinkin if AH is gonna do what he wants I'm gonna cover who I want. yes I saw Dallas make that drive at the end of the game I also saw why Shan pulled him. trust me on this AH will take advantage of every opportunity to show his arse in effort to force a trade. he's got a fat bank from Washington why earn what you inherit? (so to speak) if #92 had any interest in helping this team it would show in the locker room the practice field and on game day. to date this has not happend . believe me IMO this is a powder keg and if Shanny don't handle it the right way we as fans could find ourselves with that same bad feeling about the Skins that once again things went wrong and we'll blame it on D. Snyder

Nflorida1. I agree about his angles, but it's a completely different scheme...A zone/gap setup as opposed to dominating a person like he's used to. (sometimes 2 people) Nice Peter Griffin voice..gotta love that...But if anything he's 100 million dollar decoy. Look at last yr..Al's production, far from 100 million dollars. But BO and AC both had 11 sacks. Carter may never have 11 sacks again in his career. With this blitz happy d, you need a horse in the middle of the field or on the end. Either way, especially against Vick who always rolls to his left because of his southpaw throwing arm, and a rookie qb like Bradford who scrambles.

If they have it in their head, knoing that Al's on that side and it's in their best interest not to go near him ,then it's an advantage. Out of place here or there or not, the fear he instills in what the offenses want to do make the play calling, the group around him and the secondary less likely to give up big gains on 3rd and 4th. If you can get pressure on the edge or up the middle on 3rd downs with only 3 or 4 guys coming, who can convert third and long. And we wont have 2nd and 3 after a 1st down run up the middle nearly as often. We don't have a close 2nd to albert, noone requires 2 guys to block him, which essentially clogs the middle without him even having to touch the RB bc 3 guys are in the middle. Fletch will have more gaps to go through, and Rak will have one guy, or maybe even an RB on the edge to smoke. I can't see the downside honestly, he's someone the O will scheme against and right now we have noone that demands that.

Not that I want to encourage this, but I'm pretty sure we're the only NFl blog that has so much unrelated scatological commentary. Isn't that supposed to be developmentally complete at like, 12?

shanny needs to stop this childish game, and the d.c.media needs to stop giving this jerk a free pass.are they blind,or just afraid to criticize this terd, thats right, terd!he is slowly causing a rift with this team, and this rift is growing wider and wider.another thing ,he does not,i repeat, does not, have full control of this team.d.hall has already pulled the covers off of this, especially with his exposing the d-coach.dont forget,he also questioned,in a round about way, shannys handling of albert.remember,i,billy dee, told you time and again that shanny is not the answer for this team.the first thing a coach needs to do when inheriting a bunch of dudes like we have is blow it all up!and if this cant be done, then mold and modify your system around what players you have, and stop trying to make these round hole players fit your square peg system!it aint gonna work!period!

"Albert" and "Haynesworth" should be two of the words that you just can't say on television,or anywhere in the media. As soon as I hear that name mentioned.I change the channel, station, turn the page, etc.

The dead skins going no place without big AL, did you folks watch the dallas game every down played by big Al, it took two players to stop him that left and open player to shoot the gap, Shanahan, made the right move to change big AL, position and if big AL, don't play you fools will lose.>>Billy Ray

It's great we are back to Albert Haynesworth again. He's the only story in Washington, isn't he? I'm sure that all Redskins are delighted to see additional coverage of Albert Haynesworth.

Maybe there is a software package that will block out any web site that mentions Albert Haynesworth. That would pretty well knock out the Wash Post, wouldn't it?

Maybe Al should hook up with Lindsay and become the couple we are sick of hearing about that are rich and famous for doing nothing for a living.

The Redskins deserve all the hell they get from Haynesworth. This guy tore off a players helmet and stomped on his head twice. Who did they think they were paying $10 million to?
