Source: Albert Haynesworth will play vs. Dallas

We're getting ready to head to practice, but we want to pass along a little tidbit we received from a source Monday afternoon.

Despite the Redskins' disappointment with Albert Haynesworth's play in the preseason finale, the team does plan to have the two-time all-pro defensive lineman active against the Dallas Cowboys in the Sunday-night season opener, according to someone familiar with the situation.

And there's more. The Redskins also plan for Haynesworth to play a role against Dallas, the source added. The source made it clear he did not know whether Haynesworth would start, but he definitely anticipates Haynesworth playing.

During practice Saturday, which was closed to the media, Haynesworth participated in very few plays, according to another source. After primarily lining up at right end recently, Haynesworth was moved back to nose tackle and taken off the nickel package.

The most recent development in the Shanahan-Haynesworth saga could indicate that the Redskins, regardless of their feelings about Haynesworth, realize they are a better team with him on the field. Of course, it's dangerous to read tea leaves where Shanahan is concerned. And based on the other twists and turns involving Haynesworth since the 2009 season ended, everything could change again.

But this is where things stand at the moment.

Line up and play already, will be nice to give the WaPo something substantive to talk about other than what "the source" says about AH. $100 "the source" is JLa and his source is JReid......self confirming DB pact.

Some people are acting like the Redskins had any leverage... They would of had to pay more than $7 million to guarantee his services... The Ravens are in position to WIN the SB this year... TJ had all the leverage because he was going to get paid 7 million regardless.

Posted by: tony325 | September 6, 2010 12:31 PM | Report abuse

Tony, that's not how it works. What the Redskins would have had to do was to write him a multi-year contract with a big bonus due in the second year. Apparently, no one was willing to make a long-term commitment.

So glad football is in 7 days. Really tired of reading about AH speculations and accusations. Let the play on the field do the talking!

That assumes the dude isn't going to dog it, either blatantly like he did in 'Zona or not so blatantly and do a "half-hearted" job.

Of course Haynesworth is going to play. Yes he looked terrible against the Cards...so what. He played an awful lot against 'em so that's probably why he practiced so little on Saturday. The guy is a world class d-bag but he makes our team better when he's on the field.

Bottomline... someone had to guarantee him more than the 7 million he already was getting. I want to know who the undisclosed team is that was about to trade for V Jax.

All this post says: AH is going to be on the 45, and only a crazy person would have him on the 45 and not put him on the field.

Lets be honest, when you are down to the 45 man roster, you probably will have 44-43 of those guys play that game, depending on how many QB's are on your 45 man roster.

No, Tony, they didn't. All they had to do was to guarantee him some money next year -- say $2-3 mill. -- then pay him the min. this year. Net cost would have been $2.85 to $3.85 mill.

So if you put him in, how many plays is it going to take for Hasett/Shanahan to know if the dude is giving full effort? And let's say that after six plays it's decided that there isn't full effort, then what?

Posted by: JumboJimbo | September 6, 2010 1:16 PM | Report abuse

I get so sick of "sources" saying to make a news story. If I don't hear Shanahan or AH say it, I don't give credence to it. Report the news, not hearsay.

The Skins are winding up the Haynesworth O-line wrecking ball and plan to unleash it on Dallas.

The only place left to direct his anger will be on the field -- at the opposing C -- who is probably having bad dreams about AH lining up directly across from him.

Some of you wanna be Redskin coaches an GMs make me grimace. Let me ask those of you idiots if a 9 year veteran who is the most valuable player on the defense should have played at all in the last preseason game , preseason in he NFL means the games don't count, don't believe for a minute Shanahan didn't know weeks ago what his final roster would look like.. I am no apologist for Haynesworth or his actions, he chose to do what the rules allow an he paid the price. Shananhan needs to get off his high horse an show some maturity an play guys who make this team better..Haynesworh clearly is in better shape then all of last year an makes this team better which will allow the linebackers to make plays....This Shanahan , Haynesworth drama needs to end today so they can focus on shuting down the Cowgirl running game, get pressure on homo and find ways to slow Whitten down...All this hype an drama on Haynesworth is ridiculous let the man play an get over the fact he legally took Snyders money!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: BeatDontStop | September 6, 2010 1:22 PM | Report abuse

Is McNabb practicing today? i think that is the important question.

Posted by: iH8dallas | September 6, 2010 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Wow, Haynesworth is going to play?

For a second there I thought Haynesworth getting few reps at Saturday's practice was a clear-cut sign that the coaching staff hated him, and had nothing to do with the fact that he played 49 snaps 36 hours prior on a Thursday night, west coast game while 31 other players on this roster had the night off.

Another media-driven story. Shocking that AH will play. Shocking I tell you.

The Skins and Raiders may have offered a multi-year contract to TJ, but he choose the Ravens who have a legitimate chance to be in the Super Bowl. As an added bonus they play the Bengals twice a year.

It will be interesting to see if his ego can handle being the 3rd or 4th WR...

Posted by: siris | September 6, 2010 1:30 PM | Report abuse

Sounds like Shanny is having his guys run J-Reid around in circles, I guarantee this is all BS.

AH will play just as much against Dallas as Haslett wants him to, Shanny doesn't decide who plays on defense.

Bingo..

Ever wonder why no other news outlet that has sources within the team hasn't reported anything to do with a problem between the team and AH?

Posted by: jumbo5383 | September 6, 2010 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Dear Jason Reid,

The days of the redskins paying for unproductive, high priced free agents, allowing players to run the team and decide when they practice, and allowing front office decisions leak into the media are over. This is a well run organization now. Your sources (JLC) are no longer valid. You'll just have to wait until the team announces the news, just like the rest of us.

I really hope this fiasco is just a scheme by Shanahan to befuddle that buffoon Wade Phillips. Wade Phillips does not possess the mental prowess of a Super Bowl winning coach.

National TV, sold-out stadium and the Cowgirls - AH will have a pro-bowl day!!! Whether he starts or not, what better way to show up Danny, Shanny and the media. AH does not like to attend training camp - some of our best don't attend training camp year after year (see Brett Favre (sp)). AH will play his heart out, get three sacks and disrupt the Cowgirls running game. He will make a case for not practicing hard and not attending OTAs. The fans will cheer him and Snyder's media machine will be forced to write good things about him. If AH plays, AH wins. If AH does not play and the 'Skins lose to the 'Girls, AH wins. Danny and Shanny have painted themselves into the proverbial corner.

Most likely: Haynesworth got a VERY light day at practice Saturday following a 47 snap effort that ended some 36 hours earlier.

AH is the best DLineman we have, this is the opening game, our rival divisional opponent, he will play and play hard. AH may be crazy, selfish, etc. but this game will be broadcast nationwide, AH has pride.

Personally I can't blame him for playing halfazz against AZ, he felt it was demeaning to be out there with future Home
Depot, FedEx, and car lot employees.

JJ: After we pound em' with Marion Barber up the middle, deep passes to Roy Williams.

Phillips: Great Idea, Jerry! I was just about to say that!

Romo: Where am I, again? Oh, yeah, lots of famous people on ESPN say we are SB favorites! I'll show them!

It is amazing how all the writers seem to have "unnamed sources" who all say something different. I can't believe there are people in the organization willing to pass you info. Good way to get fired UNLESS they are feeding you mixed messages to keep the opponent guessing. If these people have time to talk to you during the week before the opening game, they probably are not committed to the team.

fwiw, I'd prefer Troy Smith, cut by the Ravens, as our #3 QB. Not gonna happen, of course, because of Shanahan's hard on with Beck. But #3 QBs don't merit 3 year deals, and every time I've seen Smith, he seems to do pretty well.

Oh well.

I wish Fat Albert would refuse to play next week so the 'skins could take away his money. However, fatso is being legally guided to not allow for that type of action and that money is all that he cares about.
