AM Update

Still waiting on final confirmation on some things, but I heard that Steve Spagnuolo left town late last night - around 1 am - without a contract. One source said he was not offered the job and is talking to the Giants about a new deal there after guiding that defense to a stunning defeat of New England.

Again, I do not have this confirmed yet, but sources who have been spot-on through this entire process are telling me this.

Indications are pointing to Jim Fassel at this point but Dan Snyder has not begun telling the candidates of any decision yet. They all - Ron Meeks, Fassel, Mooch (if you want to throw him in there) - know nothing as of this moment, but that could be changing. And just because Spagnuolo left without a deal - if what I am hearing is true - it would not preclude Snyder from still striking one with him.

But if you held me down right now and made he guess - again, I'm guessing here and not reporting - I'd say Fassel right now.

Reminds me of a guy that JKC hired in '82.

Please be Fassel! I cannot believe what all the outrage is about-he is a TWO time coach of the year who took a team to the Super Bowl that wasn't even that good! Plus he is great with young QB's and is motivated to win baby! Virtually all of the teams having playoff success have coaches on their second tour of duty. Hire Fassel now and end this ridiculously long search already!

I am glad we are not bringing another defensive coach in to meddle with Greg Blache. We need an offensive HC who can come in and support an inexperienced Zorn implement the WC offense to a QB that has learned 6 offenses over the last 7 years, and an offensive staff who has no clue how to run the WC offense. We also need a coach who can call plays, as Zorn has no play-calling experience.

The fossil is not my first choice, but it certainly makes more sense than Spags or Meeks at this point.

But the good news is that (a) we know he'll work with Zorn and Blache, and (b) this whole painful saga will finally be over.

From the other newspaper...

"Coaching search could last into next week [David Elfin]

Word from Redskin Park is that the interminable search for the next coach likely won't be resolved today and could actually go into next week. Part of this could be timing. As much as the Redskins rule local sports, they understand that weekend newspapers and newscasts are the least-watched so if Dan Snyder wants maximum exposure, as usual, the next big day after today would be Monday.

So if the two-day sitdown with Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo didn't produce a job offer, which seems to be the case, and Snyder and righthand man Vinny Cerrato need another day to make their pick of Spagnuolo, former Giants coach Jim Fassel, former 49ers coach Steve Mariucci and Colts D-coordinator Ron Meeks, then the Redskins could try to sit on the news through the weekend."

You heard it here first.

Posted by: Original_etrod | February 7, 2008 11:33 AM | Report abuse

Where is Grimm in all of this discussion???? Seriously!

Not that there are any remarkable candidates for the job this time around --since Cowher is sticking to his guns about not coaching anywhere this year(AND THAT IS THE REAL PROBLEM WITH THIS SEARCH - there's no "sure thing").

Of those still out there, my preference is Mooch, but that doesn't seem like it's going to happen.

I wasn't a big GggW fan for HC but with the dearth of an "obvious" choice, probably should have gone with that.

He's been a zero for way too long to come to the Skins and help. Joe Gibbs, Al Saunders, and Gregg Williams STRUGGLED to get us to the playoffs....you guys think Fassil, Zorn, and Blache can do better? Does Snyder really think this is the better direction to be heading into? Snyder and Cerrato look like two 8 year olds who bought and are running a huge candy store.

Fassel is garbage... as pointed out earlier, he's an offensive guy who's offense was terrible in BMore... as soon as Billick fired him midseason and took over, the Ravens O improved immensely. Plus, don't be snowed by his early success in NY... look at his track record and how he finished. Once again, a terrible move by Danny and Vinny!!!

"Uninspired" is precisely the right term to describe this. Instead of picking a coach the fans can get behind, he picks a retread who has been fired twice, once by his really good friend in mid-season. I mean, come on.

If Fassel ends up winning a Super Bowl and turning this team around, I will print this post out, put some ketchup on it, and get barno to eat it.

Posted by: PDiddy | February 7, 2008 11:38 AM | Report abuse

Snyder is just trying to hide his true intentions - to not have a coach at all. Instead he is going to install a four button play chooser ala Tecmo Bowl and have fans vote on the play call...of course charging 50 cents per vote in the process.

By the way, Sally Jenkins is as big a hack as there is in the business. She doesn't even believe much of what she writes. How do I know this? Well, for starters, after years of pummeling Barry Bonds over steroids allegations, she finally "saw the light" on the the issue once her pal Marion Jones got caught using steroids. She reversed her position, did a 180, and now believes we shouldn't condemn athletes who use performance enhancing drugs.

She is a hack. And not a very good writer to boot.

Even if Fassel does well, it's another short term fix. Bad move, Vinny.

Categories: Coaching Moves
Okay, Giants fans, here's your biggest ally at the moment:
Today, Mrs. Spags is chatting with her husband, Coach Spags. The topic: Whether or not to be the next head coach of the Redskins.

This was the plan all along: For Spags to go down to Washington, talk to Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and executive VP of football ops Vinny Cerrato (for, like, 19 hours) and then bring all that information home to discuss it with his wife. My sense was he was right on the fence before he headed down to Washington and the meeting would likely sway him either way.

I'm not sure if the Redskins even talked about numbers with Spags yesterday, but from what I gather, they didn't make him a formal offer. I would be shocked if they didn't at least say, "If we were to offer you the job, the contract would be roughly $X over X years."

I did have a chance to speak with Maria VERY briefly the day after the Super Bowl. All she said was she supported her husband all the way, no matter what he decided.

Maybe I should go get a haircut so I can find out what the story is. I mean, Mrs. Spags cut Manahan's hair (singular), maybe she'd be willing to shear my (five) hairs. Sure beats VentiNove's squirrel idea.

I have been known to work but very rarely grandma.

Perhaps Danny's plan is to prolong the search well into the season giving him the chance to use the coordinators as proxy to him coaching much in the same way he uses vinny as a proxy to be GM.

So...how would you guys feel if Fassel was hired?

Posted by: Original_etrod | February 7, 2008 11:52 AM | Report abuse

Sally is right. Imagine what Danny has done to the Redskins. Although we were not that great before he took over, he has degraded us further. No one comes here to make us win. They come here for the money that the job pays.

You have to hire someone for a minimum amount like 1 million or something (or even less) and make him prove his worth. This way there is hunger to prove himself. You start off at 5mil+...there is no hunger. Hope Danny understands that the real key to this is to identify that hunger.

A source close to Steve Spagnuolo said that the Giants' defensive coordinator just decided to pull out of contention for the Redskins' head coaching job and remain in New York.

No one comes here to make us win. They come here for the money that the job pays.

It's better than people not coming at all.

What team do players go to win beside New England?

Fassel has no hunger as was evidenced with his tenure with the Ravens...he just wants Redskins (our) money and take and run with it. He knows it is a very possible that no other owner may ever be interested in him again if he misses this boat. I don't think he is inspired except for the money.

Go with Spags or Meeks with a low pay. No Mooch and no Fossil.

Also Spags will be getting a raise (2.5 mill) and be named asst. head coach.

Spags is smart - thus we should have hired him - thus he would not take the most pathetic job in the NFL.

Please help me understand something ...

Almost everyone is up here screaming, bit@@ing and moaning about Fassel....F FOSSEL ... yadda yadda yadda....

Why on Earth is everyone sooo convinced that Spags is the answer??? Is it because he "is sooo intense??" Because he has a cool nickname?? Because he yells and screams on the sideline?? He was an assistant that did a great job for ONE GAME !! Granted, it was a pretty amazing game. None the less, we are going to hand over the keys to someone with NO RESUME?!?!?

Fassel at least has taken teams top to the play-offs and a Super Bowl. He has a history of at least leading quality teams.

I Freakin' promise you ... if Spags fails everyone will be up here screaming.. "How could Snyder give some unknown the job?? What an idiot! That's it...I'm done with this team and owner!"

Yadda yadda yadda

Definately no to Fassel. Mooch or Grimm should be the only 2 choices here. Snyder should compromise between those 2 candidates and hire The Gooch - the bully that used to rough up Arnold Jackson on Diff'rent Strokes.

Just to comment on the Jenkins article...

I think she was right on...If you look at the organization since Snyder took over, it has been a losing one. I think this whole process has reopened wounds and mistakes of years past with Snyder and Cerrato. My problem is that the outrage has been inconsistent. Fans wanted Greg Williams, but we assume Greg Williams interviewed well and that somehow, Snyder or Vinne screwed it up. We don't know that. Snyder thinks Fassel is the answer..maybe he really doesn't. I'd like to take a wait and see approach. Not saying I agree, I think Snyder's hiring of the DC and OC was his way of ensuring continuity particularly with the defense. We all thought the offense was the weakness of this team, so there's no continuity there. We all mocked his 700 page playbook. I want to wait and see because whoever it is, if they win...all sins are forgiven...if they lose then they'll get crucified whether it's Williams, Fassel, whoever. People yell about the FO structure, but no one was yelling when we made the playoffs. The Skins' greatest sins, to me, has been wasted draft picks, but with only a few picks they drafted well. Let's hope they hold onto these.

I only think the Redskins will win consistently with solid draft picks and smart free agency. They turned the corner last year. Snyder shoots himself in the foot with poor PR and secrecy which makes people mistrust an already losing owner.

F Fa'Sul,

F Snyder,

F all the posters who like either!!

You think George Allen, who, besides Gibbs, is the greatest of great Redskin's icons, would want a Giant coaching the 'Skins? Fa'Sul is a hack...a has-been...a failed offensive coordinator. And, for all you "he was NFL Coach of the Year" F YOU ALL!

Here are some coaches of year.

1989 Lindy Infante (NFC) 36-60
1991 Wayne Fontes (NFC) 67-71
1994 Dave Wannstedt (NFC) 82-87
1995 Ray Rhodes (NFC) 37-42-1
1996 Dom Capers (NFC) 48-80
2000 Jim Haslett (NFL) 45-51
2001 Dick Jauron (NFL) 36-49

Combined record? 351-440-1

That is a .443 winning percentage. You want Fa'Sul, listen to Westwood One. You want Snyder, eat at Johnny Rockets and ride Superman Tower of Power @ Six Flags (where that poor girl lost her feet). Leave the 'Skins alone, and hire some F-ing football people. Look at who was up for the Hall of Fame? Jacoby, Grimm, Monk and Green. Who drafted Grimm, Monk and Green and signed Jacoby as a RFA? B. Beathard. Who screwed Beathard after trying to resign him? Napoleon Un-Dynamite. Who has screwed the 'Skins since 1999 and will do so well into the 21st-century? You got it.

Can you imagine how hard NY is going to laugh when they hear that we hired Fassel instead of Spags? They may throw another parade.

NY already knows what will happen if the Skins hire Fassel: country club atmosphere; lack of discipline; soft, selfish players; choking; loser attitude.

Even if Fassel is fired after 2 years, it'll take another 4 for a really good coach to undue the mess. (See Gibbs after Spurrier; Coughlin after Fassel.) Don't do it Snyder!!

The main problem with this franchise is that everyone wants to have their cake and eat it to. This team will not be better without 2-3 years of rebuilding from the ground up - through the draft.

Instead, we perpetually try to argue that we are just one or two missing pieces away from being a real contender... so instead of sinking the ship and building a new one, we are just mopping the decks of the titanic. Fassel will just continue this trend.

Unless Snyder is willing to destroy everything and build from scratch and accept several consecutive seasons with less than 5 wins, this franchise will never turn the corner and be a contender.

RickyRoge, I love how you and others seem to love the fact that this team needs long win streaks at the end of a season to squeak into LAST playoff spot, and act like that's an accomplishment. The bar should be higher for this team. With all the $$$ spent and big names associated, this team should be resting starters in Week 17, not playing do or die games. If these guys hang on to only two more draft picks and turn them into an impact WR or a pass rushing DE, this team could've won the division each of the last 3 years. Just think if they keep them all! And no, they don't pick well with the few they have. Last season, they spend their first pick on a guy who is basically another Sean Taylor (and that pick only looks good now because Taylor's gone), and then with the second day picks, they take two linebackers (only one is still here), a QB (?????) and TE (????). No exactly addressing the needs at WR and DE. But that's how close and yet so far this team is from contention.

Yup. Just saw it on ESPN. Spags resigned for $2M/yr with NYG. Meeks or Mooch would still be better than Fassel. Still can't believe Grimm was not a candidate.

I would gladly sit through a couple 5-11s if it means we're Bowl-bound in 3 or 4 years. Besides, this team was supposed to be close to the Bowl in '06 and ended up 5-11...

If true, helps explain why it was not Spags.

http://www.examiner.com/a-1206884~Spagnuolo_crossed_off_Redskins_list_of_coaching_candidates.html
The Washington Redskins eliminated Steve Spagnuolo on Thursday from their list of candidates to fill their coaching job.

A person familiar with the selection process, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said the New York Giants defensive coordinator and the Redskins agreed he is probably a year or two away from being prepared to become a head coach.

Spagnuolo also felt he could play an important role as the Giants try to repeat as Super Bowl champions...

CORK's COACH LIST. 2.0

After recent developments and further review, having studied he issues, consulted the tea leaves and given it due diligence, here's my preference order:

1. Spags. spags, spags, he's our man, if he can't do it, um someone else might have to because according toe NFL bylaws you must hsve HC.

2. Gibbs 3.1 The new patch has been issued. fixing some earlier glitches.

3. Veteran character Actor J.K. Simmons. Have you sen this guy? He can do it ALL!

4. PANTIES! Apparently very popular on this board.

5. Roger McGuinn, master of teh 12-string Rickenbacker.

6. Due to the writer's strike, there IS no sixth pick.

7. Meeks. He's black. Obama's black. coincidence? I don't think so.

8. Only two more to go to complete my Top Ten coaches list.

9. Danny Snyder. Come on, you KNOW you want it. Don't yuh? Don't deny it. Appoint yourself. It's daring. It's unprecendented, and when you suck and fire yourself, make it as owner.

10. Mooch. Mooch, Mooch, he's our Man...yada yada.

Bublng under the top ten: Fergie, Fassel, Romey, Cowher, Bo Diddley. (You laugh, but you can 't judge a book by looking at the cover,)

Please please please, Just say NO TO FASSEL.

It will be no good for anyone.

Go with Meeks for 17+ Weeks!

Posted by: redskin20 | February 7, 2008 1:18 PM | Report abuse

First, I don't know why Grimm wasn't interviewed-but we all know he should have been. After all, it isn't as if Snyder is in a hurry.

Next, No to Fassel. He was dumped for being unable to fire up the Ravens' offense. Either take Mariucci-who has west coast experience and has done well with good personnel-or take Meeks and bring in a coach from a winning franchise.

Finally, to repeat a question from a previous column, why has Ron Rivera been on no one's list this year? Last year he was in the mix for two HC positions...then after butting heads with Lovie Smith Chicago let him go (and saw their defense collapse in his absence) and he became the LB coach at SD. How is it that Rivera went from being a hot option to being no option at all?
