And So It Begins...

Training camp is underway with hopes for a quieter beginning than a year ago. Speaking of which, on twitter, @dcsportsbog reports that there are tons of Jason Taylor jerseys for sale at Redskins Park.

20365801.jpg
Missing so far is first-round draft pick Brian Orakpo. We won't be hyper tweeting practice (@HyperSkins), but in addition to Steinbog, our reporters are on what Kornheiser calls the twitterblog:

@JReidPost
@RickMaese (who snapped the pic of the fan at right)
@barrysvrluga
@paultenorio
@traceehamilton

And, from twitter, comes this update from @dalison

Wife returned from a shopping trip last night. "I bought you a new #Skins jersey! It was only $12!". I now have a #55 Taylor.

First problem was letting your wife go shopping, for skins gear

Oh man, having to listen to Larry Michaels just to hear about the training camp is painful.

Posted by: Gweez | July 30, 2009 9:05 AM | Report abuse

Larry Wiseman talking on 980 saying agents are working on Haywood-Bey's deal primarily although the Skins and agent talked last night at 2am. Most likely Haywood-Bey's deal is the key signing.

Posted by: TWISI | July 30, 2009 9:08 AM | Report abuse

Speak for yourself Gweez, many of us want Vick. He doesn't have to start but at least we'll feel good knowing we have a solid backup in case JC stink up the joint or get hurt. Why wait and say 'we should had gotten Vick for a bargin'. Enough of the 'should have', let kick some buns this season and get to the playoff!

Tell that D-bag with the sign to piss off. We don't need or want that kind of distraction.

Posted by: Devo2 | July 30, 2009 9:14 AM | Report abuse

JC should take a cue from the movie "Varsity Blues" and bean that guy upside the head with his first pass.

Posted by: MigMora | July 30, 2009 9:19 AM | Report abuse

Relax there demon it was a joke. But I'd say the vast majority of people don't want that joker.

Posted by: Gweez | July 30, 2009 9:20 AM | Report abuse

I think it has been well documented why we wont get Vick

1) They have the same agent (JC)
2) We dont even use the wildcat with ARE
3) We are trying to groom a backup or potential starter in Colt
4) Vick hasnt done anything in 2 years
5) His record wasnt that good when he was playing
6) We dont even know if he will be able to play
7) If it takes JC two years to get the O, then how long would it take for vick who was known to eschew the plan and just tuck and run much less needing to get his nfl legs back.

He should go play in another league ASAP to show he can still play then look for FA next year.

Posted by: Zeebs | July 30, 2009 9:22 AM | Report abuse

PS Vick would be an awful backup qb. WCO is predicated on an accurate passer which Vick is not I think in his best year statistically he had a 52% completion percentage.

Vick needs an offense designed around his particular talents so it just doesn't work. I'll take either of the other 2 qbs in camp over him any day and I think most personnel men would agree.

Posted by: Gweez | July 30, 2009 9:23 AM | Report abuse

A contrite Vick at the vet minmum after he shows he is in game shape is not the dumbest thing the Skins have ever done.

He could make a decent back-up or emergency QB 9with Collins being older and I have not seen Colt yet this year). He was a versatile guy, who knows now.

No way is he "really big sign" worthy though.

Posted by: CheyenneWY | July 30, 2009 9:25 AM | Report abuse

But with the O-Line as old as it is. A super-mobile (a little Gibbs there) QB, the D would have to respect that.

Posted by: CheyenneWY | July 30, 2009 9:26 AM | Report abuse

He'd be a public relations nightmare.

Seems our boy JT is having a rough start to camp.

From Redskinsblog@twitter.com

Justin Tryon misses a ball, has to give ten pushups. Smoot: "No drops this year! You got ten of 'em!"

Barnes Draws Praise

Cornerbacks-secondary coach Jerry Gray was overseeing a special teams drill in which defensive backs would try to beat double coverage.

From Redskins.com

Rookie Kevin Barnes drew quick praise from Gray for juking past two defenders, in this case Michael Grant and J.T. Tryon.

"There you go Barnes," Gray shouted. "Good job!"

Whio is the idiot with the sign wanting Vick? First off DC foes not want Vick...Who does he think he is holding a sign acting like he is speaking for everyone? Geez I wish I could go up there and take it out of his hands and rip it up!

Posted by: leevi98 | July 30, 2009 9:30 AM | Report abuse

Go knows the Skins have never done anything distracting. lol

We definitely do not need him, but if he fell in our laps...it could be worse.

Doesnt matter anyway, JC is going to have an amazing year! We dont need no stinkin back-up

Posted by: CheyenneWY | July 30, 2009 9:31 AM | Report abuse

last season, the Skins were not productive in the Red Zone and too often got stuffed at the goal line. Signing Vick would provide more run/pass options on short yardage in the Red Zone and especially at the goal line.

Posted by: iseyij | July 30, 2009 9:31 AM | Report abuse

It's amusing to see the guy in the pic wearing #23. We all know it's from the one who's been supporting Vick's reinstatement.

Posted by: RedCherokee | July 30, 2009 9:34 AM | Report abuse

iseyij;

so would more innovative play calling and taller recievers on the field... we have those in camp to work with... and JC can roll out and run for a TD... he was very shrewd in third and long sitty's where he ran for a first.

Posted by: Zeebs | July 30, 2009 9:35 AM | Report abuse

No question as a wildcat Vick is a good qb but Zorn doesn't want to run it. As a backup you'd have to change what your doing to suit Vick which is the definition of an awful backup.

He'd be a massive distraction on a team with a qb in a tenuous situation as it is, with a Sophomore head coach.

If he goes to someplace like the Pats with an established coach and QB on a team with a solid personality where he'll know his role he'll be a success and then everyone will sit here and say we should have signed him. But he'd be a mess here.

Posted by: Gweez | July 30, 2009 9:39 AM | Report abuse

Sign Vick. Make him the scout team center, and make the block AH all day long, every practice, one on one.

Posted by: mmck | July 30, 2009 9:39 AM | Report abuse

also that would be a wildcat which zorn repeatedly said he doesnt like... so it is a moot point/

Posted by: Zeebs | July 30, 2009 9:39 AM | Report abuse

Say what you will about Marty, but at least he made the playoffs. Considering the Skins have done that just 3 times since Gibbs 1.0, I'd take some Martyball right about now.

Posted by: brownwood26 | July 30, 2009 8:41 AM

Yeah, that's what we need, more Martyball. Wasn't Marty coaching here in one of those years we didn't make the playoffs?

If the jersey he altered was a Sean Taylor one, then he should be thrown out on general principle alone.

Yeh, somebody smack that kid, eh?

Moe - from previous thred, that's kind of a chicken/egg scenario, isn't it? Does the crap attitude start them playing worse or does their exhuastion begin the mental problem?

'hair hat'Johnson/Parcells/Billick teams (who are ridden hard through camp) do not have this problem much.

Top conditioning addresses two problems: 4th quarter slumps & injuries. Redskins suffer from both. I do not hear discussions about how effective the Redskins training programs are - from players or others.

Without an upgrade to the OLine... 6-2 to 2-6, last year, WAS a guarantee of future performance as brokerage firms would say..
Snyder put all his FA and Draft money into an already 4th ranked Defense (150 Mil on two FA's alone). Every NFL analyst had Offensive Line help as the Skins number need. And all they picked up, of significance, was Dockery.. Remember Dockery gave up more sacks in Buffalo last year than any other Redskins OL player. He was cut.. And Buffalo was glad to see him go..
IMO, once Snyder couldnt get Sanchez.. he and Vinny decided to sandbag the 2010 Draft picks (all remained intact for a Tebow or McCoy, etc) and prepare for someone like Shanahan. Shanahan is a proven West Coast Offensive Head Coach, who has said he is available to coach again after this season.
And Shanahan and Cerrato are very close friends from the Walsh WCO days in SF.

So, what does this mean for JC... Most players have said this privately already.. JC has been set up to fail with an Offensive Line of castoffs that could barely make a Div 2 college squad.

Hope JC has the last laugh..

"Does the crap attitude start them playing worse or does their exhuastion begin the mental problem?"

Again: profession athletes today are extremely well conditioned.

The players don't 'get tired' in the 4th quarter. They just 'pull up' when it seems like their efforts won't yield a victory.

If you're killing yourself playing defense, and the offense doesn't score touchdowns, misses long field goals, and stalls repeatedly, the mind may tell the body to, '...chill-out...' for fear of getting hurt in a losing effort.

Posted by: MistaMoe | July 30, 2009 10:00 AM | Report abuse

Well Gm, that is a very bleak assessment.

But I agree every anaylst said that, but buges has been a top tier coach at that position for ever. So if he thought we could work with what we got, i will defer.

I am going to hope snyder isnt stupid enough to shoot yourself in the foot just to plan out a couple years down the road.

What confidence does he have that any coach wants to come here, with the circus. That is why they had to hire zorn... even coaches who had never coached didnt want his money.

I will be more optimistic saying that a lot of factors contributed to our 2-6 2nd half.

Wr's need to step up, JC needs to make quicker reads, OL needs to hold blocks a 1/2 sec longer, Zorn needs to realize he was being out scouted by the DC's last year and establishing a running game is imperative.

psp what would you like him to do? Be the backup qb? Do you think he could run the O with a 52% completion and being out of the game for 2.5 years? You think he "gives us a better change to win" coming in in the second quarter when JC goes down over 2 other qbs who are more suited for WCO as Zorn runs it and have been in the system for 1.5 years?

Or do you want him as a Wildcat even though Zorn hasn't studied it and doesn't have any plays designed so he'd have to basically go down that road now with camp starting both coaches and players learning something brand new?

I'm asking. What do you all pro Vick guys imagine him being?

I should go to Vegas and make the following bet:

No NFL team will do business with Mike Vick this season.

Why?:

a. rosters are set

b. football coaches don't like disrupions
c. there's no true certainty about his playing status

d. why give a roster slot to a guy at quarterback/wide receiver when you honestly feel he's not better than the back up you already have?

e. you have serious doubts about whether or not if his skills have diminished from being, to quote Akon, "..Locked-up..".

I think the off the field merits of Vick not being a Skin are warranted. BUT!
Vick's record as a starter is 25-15-1 since 2001. Atlanta's record without him was 9-18. And an appearance in the NFC Championship. Dude has/had RIDICULOUS athletic ability. But, whoochh, what he did. Just depends if you are a "he did his time" kinda person or not...

Maybe I was giving Snyder too much credit for planning for 2010 by not upgrading the Offense in 2009. But, its the only way to make sense of what they did in the offseason. Or didnt do..
200+ Million (FA and Draft) into a top ranked Defense.. And 20 Mil (FA's) into an offense that scored less points than the 0-16 Lions. 2-6 in the last half was attributed to no depth in the OL. They added only walk-ons and a waived Dockery.

What do I imagine Vick being for the Redskins?

A backup QB, possible prospect for next year's team.

Do I think he'd run a better offense than Todd Collins out of the gate? No. Do I think he'd run a better offense than Colt Brennan out of the gate? Honestly...maybe. Do I think with a year to learn a system, get back in shape, focus his efforts and mind on one goal (earning himself a contract to pay back those debts), that he could be better than both next year? 100% without a doubt.

And that's not including a few gimmick plays here and there that Zorn could draw up (which he has done on occasion). Or a few dummy trick plays that Zorn could draw up. Or even have him as a situational punt returner. Who knows what else he could bring? All I know is that a physical talent like that has not graced this league in a long, long time. the possibilities with a player like that are far and wide.

If you bring him into camp and he's REALLY bad, then no harm, just cut him. If Campbell succeeds as we hope, then no harm, cut Vick next year. It's really not as big of a deal as everyone is making it seem, like he'll single-handedly implode the team from within on the first day he's brought in to compete.

I think that Buges type of coaching played better with low round drafters who made 100k a year.

He should show he still has speed and can stay out of trouble for one year in the CFL or UFL then go for a contract next year

Much of what you said in the first paragraph makes sense. How can you say that if he sucks no harm done? He'd be a massive distraction with the media descending. He'd start the "Another guy brought in to replace Campbell" media stuff again.

You'd have fans calling for Vick if JC throws an Int. He could be a massive negative and for what? A guy that is a big scrambler to hit 30 and start if JC fails next year?

If Zorn is gone after this year who do you bring in that wants Vick as their QB? Do you draft a qb next year and have him learn under Vick?

From Redskins.com:

-- 9:45 a.m. ET
Finally, Some Action

After running through some mundane drills for the first hour, quarterbacks, wide receivers and cornerbacks converged on the main practice field.

Time for some one-on-ones between wide receivers and cornerbacks.

This was good stuff.

DeAngelo Hall batted away a deep pass to Devin Thomas, although the ball was slightly underthrown by Jason Campbell.
Undrafted rookie Keith Eloi against veteran Fred Smoot: Eloi clearly pushed off Smoot to get open and pull in a pass. Jerry Gray, standing nearby, clapped his hands, a sign of praise for Smoot.
Acrobatic Antwaan Randle El reached across his body to make a remarkable catch in front of a defender. The reception drew some "Ooohs" and "Aaahs" from fans.
Trent Shelton fell down as he tried to race past Michael Grant. No play.
Marques Hagans went deep versus Kevin Barnes and pulled in the pass from Todd Collins.
Malcolm Kelly made a nice cutback in front of Smoot to pull in a slant pass. Nice play, but Jim Zorn quickly jogged to Kelly after the play to give more instruction on his route-running.
Thomas ran a deep pattern and beat undrafted rookie Doug Dutch for a touchdown.
Grant played too deep, allowing Eloi to stop short and pull in the pass from Campbell.
Justin Tryon maintained good coverage against Shelton, and was in position to get in front of the ball and bat away Collins’ pass.
Byron Westbrook made downfield contact with Randle El while defending a short route. Randle El stopped, knowing it was an infraction. Westbrook kept going and batted away the pass.
Thomas ran another impressive route, twice juking out Tryon to get wide open on a downfield route.
Last play: Kelly vs. Hall. Kelly took a sideline route to get past Hall. He leaped up over the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback to pull in a pass, drawing applause from fans.

Is was about Re: Zorn and Pornography...

The Junkies were reading the blog post (and inserting the word 'NERD' periodiaclly) about Zorn NEVER 'pushing' pornography on the Inets. Then they continued to say one of the 1st comments was some dude who said that he never has looked at porn on the internet and he would say maybe only 5% of people who visits this blog ever looked at porn. Then they began to rip him and called him a nerd, such as, and so on....

In TE's defense, I thought he was being sarcastic in the post. Maybe, maybe not....

granted a great OL providing 3-4 seconds to make QB decisions can make an average QB perform above average. Ie..how did Rypien, Doug Williams and Jay Schroeder fare without the Hogs.. Not well..
Soooo, back to JC, we really dont know what he is capable of without a decent OL in front of him.. However, one could argue that when this OL was healthy, in the first 8 games of 2009, we went 6-2.
Injuries piled up in the last 8 games and with no OL depth... hello 2-6.

I can't even beleive some actually want Vick and are using the reason because of football matters. This guy is flat out evil. I do not want him to be any part of this team. some things are bigger than football. If you are focused on how he could help the team. Your just as freakin messed uyp as Vick is!

"Do I think he'd run a better offense than Todd Collins out of the gate? No. Do I think he'd run a better offense than Colt Brennan out of the gate? Honestly...maybe. Do I think with a year to learn a system, get back in shape, focus his efforts and mind on one goal (earning himself a contract to pay back those debts), that he could be better than both next year? 100% without a doubt."

Everybody acknowledges Vick's talent. The questions are:

1) how well could Vick, a very unusual sort of QB, run the team's current scheme?

2) how much blowback would the Redskins get from a signing? Would it prove a distraction from the team's focus?

My answers:
1) Vick's not a good candidate to play QB in the current scheme, even if he were the only one on the roster. He's mobile but he's not sufficiently accurate and he doesn't make quick decisions.

2) A distraction? Big time. The worst you could think of. Worse than TO. Worse than Plax, who after all, only shot himself. Vick is a bigger distraction than Brett Favre, and that's saying something.

It's not just a poor situation for the team, it's not a good situation for Vick.

People use the word "mistake" WHAT? a mistake is not paying attention while driving your car and running over a dog and killing it. Body slamming, drowning and shocking an animal until they die is pure evil and purposely done. adding the fact he lied and lied and lied until he was backed into a corner. He is not sorry...He is sorry he got caught!

Plus we do not need the media circus at redskins park. Stay the Course!!!!!!!!!

Win with integrity!

Let's not forget this guy not only did that...he also flipped the finger to his own fans in Atlanta a the last year he played. C'mon....you really want this guy the kleader of the Skins!!!!!??????!!!!!

"How can you say that if he sucks no harm done? He'd be a massive distraction with the media descending. He'd start the "Another guy brought in to replace Campbell" media stuff again.

You'd have fans calling for Vick if JC throws an Int. He could be a massive negative and for what? A guy that is a big scrambler to hit 30 and start if JC fails next year?

If Zorn is gone after this year who do you bring in that wants Vick as their QB? Do you draft a qb next year and have him learn under Vick?

Posted by: Gweez

It's no harm done because he would be cut in camp if he was really bad. If he isn't bad, then he gets to learn the position behind Campbell.

As far as calling for Campbell's head after mistakes should Vick be behind him:

(1) Vick is automatically suspended for 6 weeks. Campbell will clearly get a 6 week grace period. As much of a fan as I am of Campbell, at that point, it would be known whether or not he had made strides from last season.

(2) Some fans are already calling for Campbell's head, regardless of whether Vick is there or not.

(3) The "another guy coming in to replace Campbell" is a done deal. It's already known that Snyder attempted to replace Campbell. Campbell knows it. The fans know it. The coaches know it. Everybody does. Regardless of whether or not there is another guy already behind Campbell, Campbell knows that he's out if he doesn't improve. It's not like Snyder apologized to Campbell, then pledged his commitment. It should make no difference to Campbell whether or not Vick is there.

Yes, there could be some media or PR backlash. Yes, it could be a minor distraction to the public. In the locker room, it's not like Vick is the type of player that makes a ruckus, fights with teammates, destroys relationships, calls out coaches, etc. It really would be a media-only thing (which, mind you, isn't a minuscule detail -- just not nearly as big as someone like TO or Chad Johnson literally stirring up trouble with teammates and coaches).

For a guy that's still under 30, has less wear on his tires, has an extremely good record as a starter, was a 1000-yard rusher, and one of the most unique talents and athletes ever to play the game? Sure, I'd take the risk.

I'd let them compete in training camp. If Colt's preseason performance last year doesn't look like an aberration and Vick looks terrible, cut Vick. If Colt looks to be the same guy he was last season and Vick looks like he's still got it, cut Colt. And if Colt looks much improved (enough that it's a small difference between he and Collins for the backup spot) and Vick looks like he's still got it, cut Collins.

Skins wouldn't sign Vick even if JC got hurt during training camp. In addition to the PR mess, he's not a fit for a West Coast offense and hasn't played in two years. The development of Colt Brennan into a reliable No. 2 QB is more of a concern to Zorn who has a 37-year old backup in Collins currently.

As for the bitterness of Jansen, how many Skins including BMitch, Stephen Davis, and Arrington have left on bad terms after feeling they were mistreated by the organization? It's not a coincidence that many high profile Skins who were key contributors leave feeling they were treated poorly by Snyder/Cerrato.

11-on-11 Work

Heavy emphasis on the run game early in the session, with the defense looking solid on most plays.

Greg Blache has his defensive line pursuing ball-carriers very well. On several plays, multiple tacklers were in position to take down the running back.

Later in the session, there were more pass plays called.

Here's a sampling of some of the plays:

Mike Williams pushed Alex Buzbee past him, opening up a lane for Marcus Mason to get open and grab a pass in the flat.
Santana Moss ran a crossing pattern, making a quick cut to elude a defender. He caught Jason Campbell's pass, but the ball hit his pads and got away from him for a moment. Moss had time to pull the ball back in, completing the reception, before a defender could close in.
Anthony Alridge slipped through good blocks by Casey Rabach and Derrick Dockery for a nice gain up the middle.
Campbell's sideline pass to Moss was underthrown, but Moss was still able to dive for the catch, get up and dart down the field.
Mike Sellers and LaRon Landry don't want any part of each other. Sellers made his way downfield after a catch, and he converged on Landry. Both players, known for their hard hits, eased up a few yards before contact.
Albert Haynesworth burst past Devin Clark into the backfield, then chased down the running back all the way across the field. Shouted a fan: "Earn your money, baby!"
Reed Doughty logged the play of the day with an interception off of Chase Daniel. The pass was thrown high and Doughty leaped up to make the grab. He found a lane--as well as some blockers--down the right sideline.
Alridge showed impressive cut-back ability on a run to the right. He slipped past a tackle by Byron Westbrook, practically leaning sideways to avoid him.
Rookies Darrel Young, donning No. 53, and J.D. Skolnitsky combined on a tackle of Alridge, limiting the ball-carrier to a short gain.
That's it for the first practice. It was the first of 34 training camp practices through Aug. 20.

For those keeping score, that's one down and 33 to go.

Gosh, guys, now that the Sports Junkies (who are they?) have revealed themselves to be porn-popping perverts, I'm starting to think my 5% estimate was too low. Throwing them into the mix I guess I have to revise it up to 7.5%. Maybe 10%.

With all this real-time blog-tweeting interaction going on, I'm wondering if there is someone at the Park who'd be willing to coldcock the Vick-sign dude.

I'm willing to put $5 out there to whoever's willing. I'd consider it a charitable donation.

Any takers?

Well first of all 4th...you can only transfer to family members. They require all kinds of documents. 2nd...you just admitted that you would support Vick being a Redskin...I would never let you have them after that! lol

3rd...we have not signed Vick....but if we do I am done with the franchise.

Family has had season tickets since 1961, still in my Grandfathers name. If we sign Vick that will be a hard pill to swallow, and someone please smack the tool holding that sign. DC does not want Vick, DC wants a good offensive line and another Superbowl trophy

Stratch that, forget what I said. I'll put down $50 and hope someone out there will tie his nuts to a donkey and have it chase #23 all over the field.

I vote for signing VICK...

Bring him in, he is an excellent footbal player and will be good for this footbal team.

Jason Reid, Mayor, is the picture of the inbred high school student holding up the vick sign your handy work?

Why are you giving him a voice? What is this Mickey Mouse -ish? What is this high school inbred doing at my beloved practice field? Why is inbred out of his bunk after lights out? Why is inbred holding that sign? Why are you not taking pictures of something else?

Still trying to make sense of this here. Is this D-Bag an Eagles fan in disguise set out to cause a distraction? (I say this partly because of the shades . . . something about them)

A true skins fan (if you're not still in high school, and not a lifetime dult) would not be harping for Vick, just as they would not have been for Cutler, or Sanchez. The big difference in this case is that Vick is the worst of the three options.

I hope this tard with the sign (no offense to any pro-Vick tards on the site) gets super soaked with a burgundy and gold water pistol by somebody's kid.

Yeah, without question, having to listen to Larry "Don't call me Danny's pet" Michael is painful. He is quite possibly the worst play by play guy in all of sports. And NO....keep Vick away from this team! No more undermining the QB...let Campbell develop for crying out loud.

[i]I should go to Vegas and make the following bet:

No NFL team will do business with Mike Vick this season.

Why?:

a. rosters are set[i]

Yes, training camp rosters are set, at 80 players. But half those guys are training camp fodder, anyway. So, if you want Vick, you cut some free agent from Southwestern Nowhere State, who was never going to play in the NFL anyway. Big deal.

[i]b. football coaches don't like disrupions[i]

True. But they like winning more than they dislike distractions, and if they think that Vick can win a game or two for them as a "Wildcat" style QB, they'll put up with the headaches.

[i]c. there's no true certainty about his playing status[i]

Granted, although if he stays out of trouble, I'm pretty sure that Goodell will reinstate him after week 6, if not before.

[i]d. why give a roster slot to a guy at quarterback/wide receiver when you honestly feel he's not better than the back up you already have?[i]

Vick is better than some of the STARTING QBs in the league (such as Tarvaris Jackson/Sage Rosenfels in Minnesota and Shaun Hill/Alex Smith in San Francisco), to say nothing of the backups.

[i]e. you have serious doubts about whether or not if his skills have diminished from being, to quote Akon, "..Locked-up..".[i]

I doubt it, not at 28 or 29 years old. If anything, his body has been spared the punishment of playing in the NFL for the last two years.

Look, I'm not saying that the guy was a great QB two years ago, or that he'll be great in the future. And, despite what some of you seem to think, it would not be a good idea for the 'Skins to sign him. As other posters have pointed out, his skills are spectacularly unsuited for the system that the team runs (although that didn't stop them from trading for J. Taylor, did it?). What I am saying is that, with the skills that he does have, he'll be on some NFL team's roster by the end of this season. Bank on it.
