Another ugly loss for Redskins

Another ugly game for Washington ended with a just as brutal safety to give Kansas City a 14-6 win, the third Redskins loss this season to a previously winless team.

It's a grim outlook for Washington following yet another putrid offensive performance in which the Redskins offense scored just six points - despite the benching of starting quarterback Jason Campbell for veteran backup Todd Collins.

The fourth quarter started with the Redskins on their own 40-yard line, but the drive would move just four more yards and again end in a punt.

Kansas City went three and out on its next drive thanks to an Albert Haynesworth sack followed by a batted pass at the line of scrimmage on third down, but Washington could do little on offense and punted after a Todd Collins fumble on third down.

Starting from the 50-yard line Kansas City moved to the Redskins 38 before punting again and this time downed Washington at its own three-yard line. The Redskins again failed to pick up a first down and again punted and a 15-yard grabbing of the opening in the helmet penalty on Rock Cartwright gave Kansas City the ball at the Washington 36-yard line.

That generous field position all but set up the winning drive. The Chiefs moved just nine total yards on the drive, but that was enough to get into field goal range and Succop nailed the game-winning 46-yard field goal.

With 3:36 remaining on the clock there was plenty of time for the Redskins to drive and tie or win the game, but instead Washington went three and out again and Kansas City took over on the Redskins 37-yard line.

After a loss of four on a run attempt, Cassel hit Dwayne Bowe on a 32-yard pass to move deep into Redskins territory and Succop eventually hit another field goal to extend the lead to 12-6.

Washington took over with just 31 seconds remaining and after an illegal block in the back needed to drive 93-yards for a touchdown. Instead, Todd Collins was sacked in the end zone for a safety to give Kansas City two more points and the 14-6 win.

It all starts up front, folks. O-line was bad today (not sure why flounder thinks otherwise), and that affected both JC and TC. Doesn't matter who the QB is. Anyone would be bad because the line won't hold up.

A weekly report from the "Fresh set of eyes":
===
Before one can understand and resolve a complex issue, there should be a foundation, a base, a precedence set in place to begin the process of evaluation. Having said that, I have no fricking idea what type of offensive Coach Zorn is running. It appears to be a hybrid of Marty ball and Gibbs-2 conservatism. It’s unlike any version of a west coast offense that I have been involved in or have studied. It’s as though, Zorn has cut and pasted 2 or 3 types of offenses together and told his players that it is a west coast version. The west coast offense relies heavily on a strong passing game, which does not exist here. The WCO features a quick explosive running game, which does not exist here. The WCO is design to put the ball in the hands of your big receivers, which does not exist here. I would suggest that Zorn utilize the only running back who can offer some explosiveness ( Anthony Aldridge). I am at practice every day and this Markco Mitchell seems to be unstoppable and for the life of me, I can’t understand why he is not on the field on Sundays. I will continue my evaluation and will submit a weekly report as requested

I quit. I like Zorn and Campbell, but it's clear this isn't working. If Snyderato would wake up, hire a real GM and get some help in much needed areas, this could be a competitive team some day.

Does the possibility of an uncapped year help the terrible contract situation with this team? Can't they all just resign (yeah i wish), or re-sign to clear out all of the back stocking?

Getting my facts, Flounder, from watching Heyer and Williams stand around and watch quite a bit today because they didn't keep their guys in front of them.

And yes, Betts is awful in pass protection, which is why from Day 1 I never liked the idea of making him a third-down back. If there's one thing Portis still does well (and it's likely there is only one thing he still does well), it's pass block. He should be back there on passing downs.

What? Campbell was benched? Great news comes three years too late! Next bench the back stabbing RB who hasn't broken a tackle in three years. Bring on another punt returner who has shown he can't return punts for three years now. Next move on from the O-line talent evaluator/coach, the over rated safety, CBs and WRs...

Posted by: sheik1 | October 18, 2009 4:19 PM | Report abuse

It's an atrocious team. The defense is OK, but if the front office does what is absolutely necessary and dedicates itself to truly rebuilding the offense through the draft - LINE FIRST, RUNNINGBACKS LAST, CERRATO YOU DOLT - many of the defensive playmakers (Fletcher, Haynesworth, Carter, Griffin, Rogers, Hall, Daniels) will be in the end-stages of their careers by the time the offense has caught up. The bottom line is, the Redskins have no choice but to completely bottom-out, rebuild virtually the entire roster from scratch (hanging onto building blocks like Orakpo, Jarmon, and, um... nobody else), and commit to both a coherent personnel program (run by a strong executive with legitimate football credibility) and a coaching system. There's no one answer for the team: the entire organization is in disarray, and won't be successful at all without a complete overhaul.

Fire Vinny Cerrato. Nobody else. This team stinks because of Vinny Cerrato and his picks (I can get better picks out of my nose with my finger!)! If Dan $nyder wants to be angry, he needs to focus his anger on the man responsible for the makeup of this team. That person is Vinny "I don't know the NFL, but I DO know Brown-nosing" Cerrato! Jim Zorn is a likeable guy, but he's no head coach. Not yet anyway. Put Blache as interim head coach, give Jim Zorn his walking papers, send Vinny Cerrato to go supervise the grass mowers at a golf course, and get a REAL General Manager that has future sight at least 5 years down the road and who isn't afraid of Dan $nyder. Otherwise Dan, don't complain about the team your boy Vinny has made. Just suck it up like the rest of us betrayed Redskins fans.

It's time to start the rebuilding now. Fire Jim Zorn today and treat the rest of the year like preseason games. Let the young players play to see what you have or don't have. If it's not working, get rid of it. Next year hire a GM and build a whole new offense philosophy. Fire Ceratto and Synder needs to step aside. New QB and RB. And please committ to an offensive line. The defense is ok. If the salary cap is lifted, Synder would be in perfect position (financially wise) to grant a smart GM flexibility to build a real team. That's the only reason we don't want him gone.

Fans are we ready???? e-mail me on rebuildredskins@yahoo.com let's talk on my yahoo chat

Why do we continue to breakdown the situation??? OL. DL, QB. Simple....The coach is OUT OF HIS LEAGUE. Campbell is NOT A STARTING QB IN THIS LEAGUE. Our RB's are old and tired.BLOW THIS THING UP NOW!!! Overpriced at every position. Haynesworth is just looking to get hurt. Find a coach who wants to build something as long as Danny can give him some freedom.

Cerrato does have to go. Zorn does too. But maybe the sainted Bugel does, too? Don't see a lot of productivity there.
Isn't Gibbs still technically connected to this team? It's obvious now that he left because of the dysfunctional front office.
Get someone to caretaker for the year -- not someone on staff -- then totally remake the team in the off-season.
There has to be a retired experienced head coach who would do this for a part-time gig.

Zorn is a idiot he benched Campbell because people talked about Todd Collins as the savior !! If he would have kept Campbell in that would have giving us the best chance to win this game! Why would you keep Collins in when you need to run the hurry up offense the last two drives ?? This was just pure insanity by Zorn !!!

Todd Collins is a statue he can not get out of the way of his own two feet !!! It is funny to here people even guess who should start next week !! You guys that even think it should be discussed would have a problem with Campbell no matter what because of issues not related to Football!! Yes, I will go ahead and say it if he was not a black QB he would not take some of the garbage that he takes !! It is amazing to listen to the commentator talk about Todd Collins the same so called "great play" by Collins is a bad choice by Campbell !! LOL things will never change will they ??

As long as meglomaniacal Danny and his lap dog Vinny are in charge, we will continue to be a laughingstock.
Real coaches won't come here, because Danny wants to pull the strings and prove he has what it takes to be a football guy.
Note to Danny: Just because you have money does not mean you have any ability to run a football team. Get a REAL GM, sit in your owners box and stay the hell out of the way. Sign checks, stay away from the field.
Note to fellow Skins' fans: Stay away from FedEx in droves. Once Danny is hit in the pocketbook and starts losing money, he will sell. This is our only hope.

OK, the O-line is ancient, damaged (and not good), the HC/OC/QC is not good (but the FO loved him); The RB's are loved by the FO (but less than adequate overall); The recieving corps are less than adequate (but cost a lot of high draft picks); The high draft picks are not panning out. What are you left with?

Play out the season, hire a real GM & have Snyder step away from the wheel. Make player trades for OL (& gain draft picks when available), then draft OL, LB, & more OL). Cut the obvious dead-wood at RB, WR, D/O-line & move on in an uncapped year. Pick up FA signings where it makes sense (not where it's the "big splash" pick). Settle on & hire a coaching staff with schemes that fit the remaining personnel, not the other way around (again, no "big splash", just somebody competent).

Well all of you Jason Campbell haters, what do you have to say now? You wanted Collins in and you went along with Sonny "Jerkson" when he said Collins would have the Skins at 5-0 had he been playing instead of Jason. Well hold'em up Sonny boy and all the rest of you haters. If the Skins had both Manning brothers alternating at QB they would still suck. The reason being the o-line sucks. They sucked before Thomas and Samuels got hurt, they sucked before Dockery came back, and they suck with Dockery. But there are no bigger suckers on the team than those two clowns "Ole Danny Boy and Skinny Vinny", what a couple of dumb asses they are. I bet they are related to the three stooges. Hell Larry; Curly;and Moe could put a team together better than Dan and Vinny.Hey fire Zorn if that's what Dan is going to do, but that want fix the problem. Remember Joe Gibbs II, did the two clowns allow a proven winner to rebuild the o-line, did they allow Marty to do so and I want even metion that goofy sucker from Florida, but you all know who I'm talking about? The answer is no. I believe it was on the post where I read that Synder in ten years has darfted only three or four offensive lineman. As long as Dan Synder owns the Redskins, Jerry Jones want be the worst power manager in the league.
But even he has three SB rings. All Dan has is a ring in his nose that Vinny controls

A special not to Sonny "Jerkson" you were wrong again, Collins didn't work out either. Why don't you and Larry man up and tell Dan the truth which is he and Vinny really suck at putting together a football team. And all of his money on free agents including Haynesworth has caused them to negelct the o-line and that's the key problem for this team. Put big Albert on the o-line the hundred million dollar man ought to be able to block as well. Oh, yeah I forgot he can't keep his wind long enough to play defense so o-line is out of the question.

Thing is, it's difficult to hit Danny Boy in the wallet for this year since he already has collected ticket money and most parking revenue, etc. for the season. The only thing he would understand is for the sheep to NOT renew for next year. I got a jump on that and didn't renew my tickets this year - looking like a better decision by the week.

Haynesworth yet again prone on the field - what an appropriate picture of this lost season. It'll need to hit rock bottom before it gets better, and the Skins don't have far to go...

If the new GM figures out how to turn the top 5 pick into 2 firsts and a high 2nd that would be awesome. But since it will still be Vinny doing his thing, maybe another couple of project QB's wil help?? Or ANOTHER bust of a WR. Why does Marko Mitchell sit?? Because Vinny's big picks are DT & MK. I'm not sure the coach has a lot of power. Good luck to the 9th guy on the list who actually takes this job, because Ceratto will be right there with you drafted unneeded, questionable talent.

Some general questions other than "why is Vinny still employed?" and the usual O-line questions....

- why is a natural all-American all-everything DE playing LB instead of DE
- why do we have a strong safety playing free safety
- why do we not use Eldridge (or Thomas) on punt returns. ARE is useless back there.
- why even keep Marko M. on the roster if all he does is sit.
- D has played well, it's been against very poor teams. The horrible D-coaching is obvious. It is going to get ugly the next few weeks.

Folks, lifetime fan here, but trust me, these next few weeks are going to make the Spurrier era look like Utopia.

Until Snyder sells the team, the Redskins will fail. As a Detroiter, I know how bad ownership can damage a team for decades. Snyder won't ever think that football people know more football than he does. Skins fans will pay for that. Saw the attendance was about 79K. Apparently some have already gotten the message: This owner doesn't care about you.

Posted by: RWSRO | October 18, 2009 4:54 PM | Report abuse

You guys know what's going to happen now, right? The team's going to go 4-12, and Snyder's going to "take" everyone's advice - in his typical ridiculous Snyder way - by throwing $40 million at Mike Shanahan and making him the dreaded coach-GM combo. Then he's going to sink another hundred million dollars on mercenary veterans instead of drafting a new core for the team, and we're all going to jump right back on the "This could be the year!" bandwagon.

This thing is doomed. The sooner we stop pumping money into it, the better off we'll all be.

Time to start the purge. We have two guys to beat one and Sellers cannot block him and Portis cannot make him miss. Keep portis one more year as punishment because his salary is guaranteed anyway. Sellers has been absolutely horrible this year cut him. Offer Jason Campbell a 1 year deal that would net us a third round pick if someone chooses to match, offer Carlos Rodgers a 1 year deal that would net us a secnod round pick if someone chooses to match. Start drafting o-line, line backers, db's, running backs. It is hard to say how bad the draft picks are because the offensive scheme is sooooo bad. Even when they throw to DT, Campbell threw the ball 3 yards out of bounds he made a great catch but how can you evaluate without opportunities. Campbell has no touch on the ball everything is flat and a bullet which leaves no margin for error. The pass to moss if he puts some air under the pass and leads him across the middle that is a TD. Instead it is a bullet that has to be on target or it is un catchable. They need to blow it up and start over. What free agents would come to this team unless you are going to seriously over pay them. This is a horrible franchise.

Until you purge Dan Snyder from making football decisions this disaster will continue. Todd Collins could not do much better behind this broken and battered O Line.

Fire Cerato! Hire a competent GM who knows football. I feel bad for the players as they are still young men, but I have detached emotionally in order to keep my heart from being broken. AGAIN! i'm thinking 3-13 this season.

May 1999 - I had no idea what a terrible significance this month had for the 'Skins.

Posted by: mdflorals | October 18, 2009 5:10 PM | Report abuse

After watching Zorn in his press conference after the game, I'm trying to figure out why he was hired in the first place. He can't man up and state that he benched Campbell directly - he hemmed and hawed and finally got around to it. If this is how he faces an obvious decision, no wonder this team is going downhill. There is no leadership on this team on offense or special teams - there is none in the front office, and the only group that appears to give a damn more than half of the snaps is the defense - and without offensive support, the defense is wearing out in the second half.

I'm no longer angry. I'm embarrassed. For the rest of the season I'm rooting for the Colts and the Saints. The Redskins won't be wasting my time on Sunday any longer.

In closing - it is about to get real messy in Washington - the coaching change that likely will happen the monday after the Eagle loss will cause an explosion on this team that will engulf the entire organization. I don't think Snyder is man enough to admit what is wrong and to fix it. There is a reason this team continues to play like it does for a decade. Coaching changes have only managed to get them to tread water on the best of times; in other times the inertia of ineptness and ankle-biting and snivelng from players like Clinton Portis are destroying this team.

Well, no one will speak to him first so he will never know, will he? I guess running the team like an arrogant prick is more important than winning and being respected.

Keep in mind that today's game was a preseason game for him because if memory serves, he didn't take a snap in the preseason and if he did then it was only for several plays. Everything Danny Boy does seems to reek of desperation. Last time he got rid of Vinny that lasted for one whole season - then Marty got fired and Vinny the Lap Dog resumed his place at his master's feet. The hiring of Spurrier, the re-hiring of Gibbs, the hiring of Zorn...all totally last-gasp moves. Until Danny Boy gets the cojones to hire a Bobby Beathard-type GM nothing is gonna change. And let's hope he doesn't hire a coach/GM because in today's NFL that ain't gonna work.

The sad part about this is we (the fans) have cared about this team longer than the current players, Cerrato, Snyder. This is a disgrace! We know that the way this team won under Gibbs 1.0 was strong line play. If we know this, why did we go into this season with the O-line on a wing and a prayer? I don't want to hear about we aren't true fans if we voice our displeasure. We support this team, we love this team. This is so frustrating because we know better. This isn't Redskins football. Snyder can make more money if this team is successful, so please get a real footbal GM in here, rebuild this team from the ground up, and if we are lucky like when Beatherd got the job here and hired Gibbs, we can have this thing fixed in 2-3 years. The fans can accept that as long as we aren't being lied to about this is a good football team. Please, please please!!!!

The problem ain't the coach.
The problem ain't the QB.
The problem ain't the receivers.
The problem ain't the defense.
The problem ain't (most of) the running backs.

All of these things have been changed and rechanged and changed again over the years to no effect.

We all know what the problem is, the only thing (other than ownership and management) that is not listed above -- THE OFFENSIVE LINE!

It may be, as is undeniable now, that the line is offensive, but offensive as in they are so incredibly awful and bad. For years we have brought in good up-and-coming QB prospects (Ramsey, Campbell, etc.) and QB vets, and they have all been unable to do the job effectively because they have been beaten up and beaten down due to a non-existent offensive line.

And now, once again, we have a young QB -- who had enormous potential to be an excellent QB -- totally ruined and probably beyond repair. That is ONE thing the Redskins do well -- ruin QB prospects.

Everyone on the team seems to be stepping backwards in terms of their performance on the field except for a few players like Cooley and Fletcher. But it's gonna get even worse before it gets better.

Hey fellow Skins fans,

I, now living in Minneapolis, suggest adopting the Vikings bc they are good and are worth watching. Might have the best combo of defensive and offensive lines in the NFL. The best RB - what a fun guy to watch. And an underrated bunch of play makers. Plus, they are fairly young except at the QB position. In short, everything the Skins are not.

I remember some preseason threads where some of you had some lofty expectations for the season and I kept saying that the offensive line would fall apart. I believe I had them down for 5/6 wins. Seems a bit optimistic now, but the Vikings are 6-0 and have played a couple of the most exciting games of the season!

I feel bad for only a few players on this roster. Cooley, Horton, Doughty, Fletcher...that may be about it. Orakpo is going to be a player also, but there is not much on this roster worth a damn. Real football players who love the game and would play for free. Haynesworth is already a disaster of a signing. He can't even play half a game much less live up to that contract and sadly he does not give a shat! He is dumb, fat, and happy. Literally!

Ummmm, glad you guys realize now the offensive line sucks. But, the news flash is the offensive line has been the weak link on this team for probably 4/5 seasons. Gibbs II with Bugel turned them into a serviceable unit for a while, but that's about it. I remember Gibbs saying how he couldn't call certain plays bc they took too long to develop, which again leads to the *real* problem with this team - no GM or football professional with a vision running this franchise. I would much rather Snyder spend 50 million luring Bill Pollian here or someone of his pedigree. Then you can tell the fans we are rebuilding and most can live with that process as long as progress is made. If Snyder keeps doing the same stuff, he really is in danger of running one of the premier franchises in the league completely into the ground if he hasn't already. For the life of me, I don't know why he won't let a real football guy run the program. He'll get plenty of credit when it works?

This has to be one of the dumbest posts I've ever read on this site. I'm sad to say this, but a lot of these Skins fans have a football IQ of Cerrato/Snyder. Todd Collins sucks. I'm so happy he played today. Enough of this only if Collins played bulls!!t. He played and looked terrible. If you can't play ball by week 6, then you just can't play. The Chiefs had the worst defense in the league, Collins came in and didn't do s!!t.

I was at the Skins game in Detroit and the same problems exist. The offensive line is the worst in the NFL. Repeat the offensive line is the worst in the NFL. Doesn't matter who the QB or head coach is. Stop blaming Zorn and Campbell for the offence's struggles. I guess Danny boy and Vinnie have some of you still fooled like Flounder and Barno. Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, Fred Davis, and Chad Rinehart have all been busts.

3 losses to 3 previous winless horrible teams shows me that we don't know how to draft quality players. Lots of teams today scored tons of points. Do you know what they all have in common? The have great, good or decent offensive lines. We have no offensive line. If you can't block you won't win ball games. A decade of ignoring the offensive line in the draft has caught up with the Skins.

We will be lucky to win 1 more game this year regardless who the head coach or QB is. Danny boy, will you finally fire Vinny and hire a real GM, or do you want to continue to be the laughing stock of the NFL? Draft nothing but offensive lineman with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks.

To the real Skins fans who know you have to have depth at every position on your team: it's gonna be a long season.

All of theses suggestions and comments about what the team needs is great stuff. I totally agree that our problems are not just Jim Zorn and Jason Campbell. I have been a supporter of both. But our true problems (aside from the FO) is the offensive line. But there is truly a level of apathy with this team that just sickens me. I'm a life long Redskins fan and remember the good old days very well. We were a franchise that fans could be proud of. We didn't win every Super Bowl and didn't make every postseason but we were always near the top of the league and teams knew they would have a hard fight when playing us. Now we are just a joke. Every team that plays us has that game circled and marked as an easy win. We DO need to start the reubuilding process but Dan Snyder will never let that happen while he's in charge. He will end up firing Zorn and trading Campbell, bring in some high profile currently-retired coach (Gruden? Shanahan?), go for a big splash free agent pick up in the offseason, and the team will continue to suck. I agree with everyone who says it's time to blow this thing up and start over but we're kidding ourselves if we think The Danny will ever let that happen under his watch. He will continue to think that his money will fix the franchise and he will continue to be wrong and we will continue to be the laughing stock of the league. I am still a true fan and I still love this franchise but, nowadays it is very very painful to be a fan of the Skins.

Our only hope is for Snyder to lose the team some how. Perhaps his other bad investments will go so far south he is forced to sell the team!

He is the only constant during the past 10 years of sad football.

People wake up and stop giving him your money until he takes himself out of the coaches office and subscribing to Fantasy Football weekly.

Dont blame Zorn for the job that was forced upon him because there were no other takers out there that wanted to work under a loser control freak. I'm sure the Dan has to feel good that his childhood idol's, riggens, jurgenson etc...thinks he is a loser also!

Dont take your frustrations out on the players or coaches, I'm sure they dont like losing. Take it out on the head of this god awful snake Dan Snyder. He should take some lessons from Ted Leonsis on how to organize a franchise as he did 6 years ago, patience and knowledge will get you farther. F'n idiot.

So in your world 30 minutes of ZERO points is better than 30 minutes of 6 points?

Must be the "new math" I always heard about as a youth.

But seriously. Off the bench TC is able to hit Moss in stride, whereas JC hasn't been.

Don't you think Collins played well enough to warrant one full week of getting all the reps in practice, and a full start to really judge if Zorn is worth keeping for the duration of this season after the bye or not?

Yes, we'd all love to be realistic and see if we can use the balance of the season to evaluate the team's young players' talent.

But we also know that Mr. Snyder doesn't have the courage to admit we're in for a rebuilding.

To himself, to the players, to his staff, or to the fans.

This is football where you want MORE points, not golf, where a lower score is better.

Hopefully that will help you understand.

30 mins of JC equalled 0 points

30 minutes of Todd Collins equalled a LEAD and six points...NEITHER of which JC has achieved.

Under Collins the offense had spark and had TWO plays of over 40 yards 1 rush and one pass...never happened under JC...ever not in one half, and under JC not even in one GAME.

Sure Collins is not a FRANCHISE QB but neither is Campbell.

They all will suck until a decent O-Line is blocking...

Go ahead with your pro-Collins objective if it makes you feel better...but any honest, objectionable, TRUE football person will tell you they BOTH suck without a good line.

Sure...lets put in Collins AGAIN.....see where that gets you....are you Cerratto??

I want one question asked of Dan Snyder

If you had not made millions and purchased an NFL franchise what would you raise as your qualifications if applying for a GM job at an NFL franchise??

He doesnt have any yet thinks he can make better personel decisions than Gregg Williams, so he doesnt get the job, or Steve Spagnuolo so he doesnt get he job. And I will guarantee you all the Snyder has had big name coaches turn down the chance to coach the Skins unless they are given complete control of Football Ops or unless a competent (i.e. Not Vinnie) Gm is hired, and he wont do this.

So once again I want the question asked

If you did not own a team what makes you think you would be hired at ANY LEVEL of a personnel office of an NFL franchise??

Then pray that he takes some time for self reflection and gets out of the way of my beloved team

You know I have never been to America, my building does not have Cable but I wake up at 4am in Sydney Australia to listen to the games online on the radio and this is what he does to me!!!!!!!!

Guys, Guys, "We're just a few plays away from being 5-1!" And remember, "We're the better team, we just didn't win!" Wait 'till the fresh set of eyes starts call the plays! Who's our third string QB? He's the man, whoever he is!
