Heyer Gives Jansen a Run for His Money

No lack of news coming from Jim Zorn's press conference. Hmm, where to start...

Right tackle Jon Jansen is fighting for his job with Stephon Heyer. Zorn made it very clear that Jansen is in a battle and could be replaced by Heyer at some point. Jansen is the longest-serving Redskin player and received a big new contract after the 2006 season. Jansen has struggled in pass protection and Heyer was hurt but played well Thursday night, earning a lot of praise from Zorn.

Even if Jansen gets healthy - and Zorn said it's not certain that his foot will allow him to play next week - Heyer is pushing him.

Rookie WR Malcolm Kelly, who has a swollen knee, could end up on the injured reserve list and be out for the entire season. He's not in a position to help the team any time soon and Zorn said IR and the physically unable to perform list (which would buy the Skins six weeks to get him right) are options, as is the chance (seemingly remote to me) that Kelly is active Thursday. Zorn said the trainers will have a big voice in this decision as well.

The Skins will not make their roster public until Saturday's 4 p.m. deadline. Marcus Mason is not a lock at this point, but WR Billy McMullen essentially is, Zorn intimated.

Jason Taylor may end up needing to rest in Week 1 and try to come back for Week 2, but Zorn is not sure yet.

Starting FS LaRon Landry is supposed to practice fully this week after missing all of camp with a hamstring problem. Zorn is "hoping" that Landry will be full go against the Giants, but after missing so much time I'm not sure that's possible.

Todd Wade's ankle should allow him to practice this week, Zorn said, but the coach had no update yet on S Kareem Moore's hamstring.

The guys on 980 think Malcolm Kelly will be placed on IR or the PUP. They also think Fincher made it, Heyer will start instead of Jansen, and Marcus Mason will be cut - because we need 6 WRs.

Posted by: Lisa | August 29, 2008 1:26 PM

The guy who hurt Mason the most last night was RB Washington with the jaguars. Madden said Washington probably won't make that team, and he played better than MAson. The point--and I'm circling it---fourth string running backs are, if not a dime a dozen, are three for a dollar.

and I don't know whether to be concerned about LL or not to be honest, he'll be alright in the long run but this Thursday is HUGE. Primetime, opening game, at Giants sta...wait, do I even need to continue?

and sorry, but goodbye Mason

Something interesting from Zorn Press conference he said he wants to see Devin Thomas more on Kickoff returns. Does this mean Cartwright is gone and Mason is in, what do you think. I am not saying its good or bad so do not hammer the messanger.

Posted by: kmdp4 | August 29, 2008 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Did Zorn have anything to say about the ineptitude of the offense? Did he trace it to pass protection, inability to run the ball, poor quarterbacking, or the humidity?

It's going to be a long, long year. If only Domino's Pizza still sold Fudge Ums. Nothing like some cubes of poop to help a terrible season go by quickly.

One day Zorn may turn out to be a great coach. Who knows, the Skins may win this year if they grasp his playbook. We all hope that is the case. But, the guy has to learn not to call out his players in public. This was great when the team was winning and everyone was happy early in the pre-season. But now you run the risk of losing the players. People complain about Coach Gibbs but in the end the players all knew he had their back. Zorn needs to do the same. There is no need to kill Jansen in the press. Just say he is hurt and Heyer is starting.

to me, Kely to the pup list is a no brainer. He isnt going to contribute in that time, and the roster has to be people who can contribute, ready to step in when needed and fill out practices....

Plus due to injuries or further evaluation of bottom roster guys, it wont be that hard to add him back to roster when PUP wait is over....

Jansen evaporates overnite? How 'bout him having the 5th highest salary cap hit on the team.

This team is teetering on the brink a week before kick-off.

Zman,

I totally disagree with that if they can not handle being critized for bad play in public then I do not want them on the team. Lombardi, Parcells and some other great coaches killed there players in public and they did OK.

Posted by: kmdp4 | August 29, 2008 1:42 PM | Report abuse

we haven't even had our entire starting defense on the field for one play this preseason (Landry out, Rogers only a few plays, JT out after only a few plays, Washington out). Give it a rest. We'll have a top 10 defense that will keep us in most games all year, as long as the offense doesn't keep doing 3 and outs.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 29, 2008 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Why the hell haven't we seen more twin TE sets? Fred Davis looks like our only productive offensive rookie at this point. What D can stop those guys at the same time? Keep Sellers and Portis in to block if you have to...if the LBs cheat send Portis on a delay into space. Let me coach this squadron of fellows.

Zman, I agree with you. Thought the very same thing last week when Zorn called out Samuels. After all, Samuels is a 5 time pro bowler and Zorn is...a ROOKIE coach.

Someone (can't remember who) from Sportsnet asked CP about the differences in Gibbs and Zorn when it comes to "blame" - CP said "Coach Gibbs always took the blame and that is why we wanted to play hard and win for him."

Man what more could you have asked of Mason in order to make the team? He was on the field more than any other offensive player over all the games, he'd run for 3 or 4 plays consecutavely, remained consistent, ran behind 2nd and 3rd string o-lines, and was the only standout over all the preseason. Put Kelly on PUP and bring on Mason, and introduce some more packages with multiple RB/FB's, as they've proved to be solid runners & catchers, and could back up the o-line. Of the RB's above Mason, he's the youngest, and his small size, speed, and quick-cuts compliments Portis' power-running style. Even if he doesn't start at all he could very easily be a project for the future.

Everyone has their management style. What worked for Gibbs may not work for Zorn. In the end, you have to be yourself. I'm sure he's not telling the media anything he didn't tell the players to their faces.

And, yes, Cindy, I'm an emotional eater. I'm working on a box of Chocolate Fudge Pop Tarts right now. A girl I met last night recommended that I put them in the microwave for 15 seconds before eating them. Jesus! How come no one ever told me about this before??? Okay, too many intangibles, inconsistencies and injuries going into the start of the season to make any big predictions.

So, with a new coach, new offense etc. I'm setting my expectations at 8-8-0. And I'll look for and expect improvements by players and coaches as we go. Any thing above and beyond this will make me happy.

I'm hoping what we've seen so far is typical pre-season stuff and that we were being cautious all around (I hope).

Interception or not, playing Doughty in coverage is like rolling out a red carpet for plaxico.

What they SHOULD do is move Springs to free safety and put landry back at strong safety. They probably won't do that until they are sure Rogers's knee will hold up in a real game.

Jansen got new contract not too long ago because we needed to "restructure" in order to get under the cap. Jansen is the poster boy for the salary cap hangover this team has. Huge committed $$ to a guy who may not ever play at a solid level.

On top of it, the Spaghetti Gang has failed to draft OL in sufficient numbers to replace the aging line we have. Keeping in mind it takes a couple years to develop an OL.

When this happened (all three up the middle), I was thinking the calls were primarily designed for evaluating the interior linemen for depth ... Crummey, Geisinger, and Clark. Back many (many many) posts ago, someone suggested that Betts should be in there. To the extent the game was about evaluating Mason, it was about (1) how he would hold out for an entire game and (2) whether he could push Betts. I think they already figured Mason was a better back than Cartwright, but Cartwright has his return game that justifies his roster spot ... so if Mason can't push Betts, then like the prototypical poster up here, he's got nothing.

The WR situation is a major challenge. McMullen has already proved he isn't a solid WR at the NFL level. Thrash is a fill-in guy, not the guy you want as your 3rd WR in the WCO.

The rookie WRs have been disappointments to date, with minimal and ineffective play. The early injuries have slowed Thomas's development considerably and Kelly won't be in uniform for at least half the season.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 29, 2008 1:52 PM

I'm in favor of getting six or seven into the formation. Probably wouldn't gain any yardage but it would confuse the hell out of them and force them to call a timeout. That's got to be worth something in the last two minutes of a game where the 'Skins are barely leading. Heck, if we could force them to call two time outs, it would be a 15-yard gain. Ask Joe Gibbs.

That's what happens when you constantly live at the cap max. You have to restructure guys who really don't deserve it in order to clear room for the current year.

Jansen could be near the top of our cap figures for the next few years and be a back-up. Not good.

Kelly and D. Thomas are awful. Them both came in out of shape, have been hurt all camp, and honestly, just don't appear to be good team/attitude guys. Hopefully they prove me wrong over the next couple of years...

Skins fan for life here but being realistic, we're a 5-11 team with major holes to fill. I can't see us winning any division games. G. Williams enabled our D to succeed with smoke and mirrors because of his ability to blitz and give different looks. Blaches watered down version is gonna see us give us 24 points a game. We could not stop runs up the middle in preseason. Subseqently, we're gonna see a steady diet all year long. Remember the days when Tiki would torch us (nice one)? Well, they're back. Reed Doughty is poor. Either Kareem or Horton should start in his place and we should take our lumps. They can't perform any worse. I'd rather play a talented guy with upside than a slow one who's already maxed out. Landry has been hurt. Springs WILL get hurt. Haven't heard Griffins name in 2 years. Washington is hurt. Smoot is good only with a pass rush. On the positive side, our ends can probably generate a pass rush. Wilson, Carter, J Taylor are decent. The only problem is that we won't get anyone into 3rd and longs because teams will be generating first downs pretty frequently.
I love this team and will always be a fan even if we were 0-16 but I'm through with the optimistic predictions. Truth is, we need help and it's a couple or few years away.

Lisa, I was a huge Jansen fan and actually though that a few years ago he was one of the best RT in the game. I ignored the occasional time when he'd get beat by speedrushers. I've been watching him a lot lately (and he gets a pass for years when he was hurt obviously) but he's another Terry Hermeling. He is pretty good on run plays but can't lay a finger on fast guys. They consistently get by him. Like I said, I'm a fan, grew up in DC, hate the Cowboys, etc. I just wish we'd let guys go when they're done or at the very least put better guys in there to start.

The key to Jansen is Chris Samuels. As long as Chris can have another pro-bowl season they Skins can help Jansen with TE and RB support. If things break down on the left side of the line, it's over.

Also, they've talked a lot about Jansen moving to center so if we have an injury there I like having him on the team.

Be real, Jansen is not going to get cut.

Also, I'm starting to question the playcalling. Teams are expecting us to come out in 3wr packages. Why not try establishing the run and mixing it up? We got so caught up in trying to change our conservative Gibbs-ian offense that now we're trying to do things we aren't capable of doing.
In some ways, this is reminiscent of '81 when Gibbs came in trying to throw it Fouts style with Joe Theismann. Didn't work so we switched up after 5 games. I sincerely hope Zorn isnt in over his head.
One issue we may have is that Seattly has been running this offense for a while. Teams have seen it and have defended against it. We're now trying to LEARN an offense that other teams have been scheming against for years. Seattle (who knows it inside and out obviously) ranked 19 and 9 in total offense over the past couple years. How can we be expected to be good at it our first year? We can't. It's gonna be a long year.

I know. Cutting Jansen is not realistic. I'm really happy to see that there's a competition for his spot, though. It's time we put our best 22 out there. Doughty ain't one of 'em.
Slow + mistakes = touchdowns.
Fast + mistakes = mixed bag.

My previous post was of course about Kelly.

Mark,

I don't think (at least i hope not) that we can draw too much from the preseason play calling and formation. The running game being largely unchanged he probably felt the need to run more of the 3 WR sets for practice purposes.

I really think we'll see alot of 2 TE sets this year. Taking Sleepy in the second round as a TE when you have a 26-27 pro bowl TE screams 2 TE. Plus the Danny likes to emulate Jerruh.

Does the PUP list count against active roster? I know IR doesn't. Kelly should be placed on IR to free up an extra roster spot for someone who can make an impact now. We wasted a roster spot last year for Randy Thomas rather than putting him on IR and I see the same thing happening again.

Um, no, are you serious? How in the hell does the Washington Redskin fanbase hold Wilbon's fate or destiny in their hands? If we don't listen or watch (because of his comments about Taylor) how does that effect his success? Do you really think people out in Oakland cared what he had to say about Sean Taylor? You do because more than likely you're in THIS area (the DMV) and follow the Redskins. Do you actually think Wilbon cares about a few 'Skins fans who are pissy because he said some comments about Taylor that we didn't agree with? Wilbon isn't restricted to WaPO and Full Court Press anymore. Get over this simple "I hate Wilbon" nonsense, and in doing so you'll be getting over your damn self.

I'm relatively certain PUP list frees up a roster spot. I also found this:

A player who begins the season on the PUP list must sit out his team's first six games. After that point, the player is allowed to practice with the team through Week 10 of the NFL season, and can be activated any time within that window. If the player is not activated by Week 10, he must stop practicing and is unavailable to be moved to the active roster for the remainder of the season.

Bah, we can forget about the PUP list. This is from comments on Jeff Saturday of Indy.

PUP is not an option with Saturday. Once a player passes his physical and practices in the preseason, he cannot be placed on the physically unable to perform list. When rosters are cut to 53 on Saturday, the Colts' options with Saturday are to carry him as one of their 53 or place him on the season-ending injured reserve list.

All I keep reading about is the West Coast offense. Why, on 4th and 1, do the Redskins look exactly like Joe Gibbs 2.0? If Zorn is an offensive guru, why the dive with Broughton? Either Zorn is surely keeping his plays under raps, or the Redskins have some real 3rd and 4th down issues.

Also, it is time to start clamoring for My Cousin Vinny's head. His 2nd round picks blow, his 4th round pick is 5'5 and can't cover the ball boy, the punter can't beat out Frost-ed Flake, and the later round picks give up big plays to CFL players. Plus huge bonus' to a crippled John Jansen and Clinton Portis (BETTS IS BETTER FOLKS) and we have real cap problems.

Skins over Giants 24-14. Offense sputters but avoids turnovers and the running game is decent. Eli is constantly harassed and throws 2 picks leading to 10 points (maybe including a defensive TD).

the truth, I have been watching these guys since the late 60's. I LOVE my Skins. I just want to see some sort of progress. I'm not down on Gibbs like a lot of ppl. He brought up back to respectability and that's huge. I atually think we are on the right track but I'm not yet sold on what we're doing as far as the offense is concerned. Maybe I need to be patient.
Seems to me that the best offensive teams all have one thing in common...good offensive lines. If we're starting over with a new offense, wouldn't it make sense to shore that area up first? Hindsight is 20-20 but it sure looks like neither one of our first top 3 picks will contribute this year. That's not what you want out of 2nd round picks. They should be able to step in their first year.
Get the studs in the trenches and work inside out. Same as in bball.

Posted by: AL Zeke etc | August 29, 2008 2:01 PM

I disagree. The restructurings are the reason we seem to be in contention every year.

Jansen resigned before his lastest injury and appeared to be solid. He is only 32. Tackles can play very well into their mid to late 30s....

Ofcourse restructurings don't always work out to their advantage, such as we are about to witness. But, that's just ONE contract......

Sorry 4th but being in the playoffs and being in contention are two different things. We do these things to stave off impending doom. To make room in the cap for the dead money from the prior stupid deals. Sure it helps a bit cause Danny splashes the upfront cash (Enjoy your $8 beers) but in the end it catches up. Just look at last year had the new NFLPA contract not been signed. The skins would have lost draft picks.

4th, the salary cap mgmt has been a nightmare. NO. Restructuring contracts is NOT what has enabled this team to be in contention. The Skins mgmt has made a bunch of poor decisions because of this. Why was Brandon Lloyd on the roster for 2 years?? Because we couldn't cut him!! Jansen is not an isolated issue.

I'll point out I didn't like the Skins cutting that deal with Jansen for EXACTLY the reasons that have come to pass. He is older, injured more often and it wasn't clear if his level of play would be up to his former standards.

Now it may be biting us.

I'll contrast that Vanderjagt in Dallas. Parcells realized the guy wasn't what he was supposed to be and just cut him. No cap issue, just get out of here so I can put someone out there who will do the job.

I was also one of those who thought that you can get PUPed if you have practiced in preseason. The dudes who got it last week (Tyree for example) had not been practicing. Anyone else remember this exactly--?

Also I checked the warpath and if I understand it correctly if Jansen is cut next year (pre June 30) his cap hit is $9.9 MM if he stays on team it is $4.6 MM. In 2010 it is 6.6 and 7.6.

This is no knock on Z. It does take time to learn a new offense. That's why in a league where there's a win now attitude I can't understand why the Saunders offense was dropped just when Collins showed how it could work. I understand why Greg Williams had to go after he didn't get the top job, but why start anew on offense? If "learning a new offense" takes time, why do teams refuse to play in pre-season?

Can't PUP Kelly since he passed his physical and practiced with the team. IR or a roster spot, see you next year malcom

Good, if Heyer is playing better then play him. Who cares about Jansens contract. The Skin are getting old and could be in big trouble the next few years. I'm starting to worry. WR and Offensive Line teams are TROUBLESOME!!!

The Patriots went 0-4 this preseason, they must suck. Just saying...

No correlation between pre-season and "real" season. Spurrier had us all fooled with his great pre-season run, only to be the laughing stock of the league.

Everyone relax

I'm not really buying all the "its the preseason" crap. Its tough to believe that the only ones not playing to potential are the Skins. If they're playing say X and the opposing team is playing Y during the pre-season, even if the Skins go to X+deltaX you can be sure the other teams are going to Y+deltaY and its tough to believe deltaX >> deltaY for pro teams. The really worrying part if that the last 2 games were so bad. If the Skins had lost the first two badly and won the remaining 3 it would still have indicated progress.

Here's a novel idea. Wait til after the first game to start your gripes. Geez people, it's preseason. Do you think vets put forth all the effort needed when they have their spot sowed up? Plus how much game planning for the other team really goes on in preseason?? Not much. Relax and wait to make up your minds after a couple of meaningful games.

And another thing, let them play a full game and get into the flow of a game first. Players make adjustments as the game goes on. Now if our starting def can't stop big plays then we have issues and our off. needs to keep the def on the bench and let 'em rest some in the first qtr next week.

Here's my NFC East WAGS

Giants 11-5 (Div champs, no idea what they do in the playoffs)
Eagles 9-7 (think they miss the playoffs)
Cowboys 9-7 (sure they miss the playoffs)
Skins 6-10/7-9 (better by end of the season, but unless Jim Zorn should the CIA head, the O looks like they need some more practice)

and this just make me laugh ruefully

I'm not going to wade through over 500 posts in three threads but has anything been said about why Jason Taylor was sitting in the owners box with Snyder? It was mentioned during the radio broadcast last night and then again on the post-game show.

A terrible example for the rest of the team and an a classic show of "f&^% you" by Snyder and Taylor.

Just an observation from my seat at the game:

Before it was Frosty's turn to punt, he was constantly on the sidelines practicing, kicking into the net, working with Red Snapper, etc. For Brooks before his turn, he barely warmed up, just stood over by himself. Seemed like Frost is busting his arse to keep his job. Will be curious if the coaches notice this and it makes a difference.

While I'm in no condition to hype the Skins after their recent performance, I think you underestimate the division. No doubt, at least 2 NFC East teams make the playoffs, possibly 3 again. The last 2 years, half of the NFC's playoff teams came from this division, and it wouldn't surprise me if it happened again this year.

How come MCMullen and the other free agent recievers can look good in pre season and the 2 draft picks cant do anything? They all learn at the same pace right? Been in camp the same amount of time...

Posted by: oc skins | August 29, 2008 3:46 PM

McMullen has had three years in the league. He was a third round pick of the Eagles. Mix has had a few years on practice squads. They're not rookies.

The team is going to be OK. It seems that most of the posters here expect 12 - 4 team. I do not think that will happen. Maybe we finish 6 - 10 7 - 9.

Will you all be disappointed if this happen?
I know I won't if they are 2 - 3 after the first five weeks, I'm extremely happy.

Did anyone else noticed that Jasno's post said that Heyer "played well?" Perhaps in addition to Jansen's struggles, Heyer's play has something to do with Jansen fighting for his starting position. If (and that's a big IF) Heyer develops into a solid starter at the right tackle by the end of the season, this would be a great news for this OL. Next year's offensive line could look like:
Samuels (who will be 32 years old next year); Reinhart (24); Rabach (31); Thomas (33); Heyer (25). Still plenty of experience, but also a bit more young blood.

Re Jensen's contract, in hindsight it is clear that they made a mistake and overpayed him. But I don't have as much problem with overpaying Jensen who played tough for this franchise for a number of years as with big dollar signings of Lloyd and Archuletta who at best were very average for their former teams. And for Lloyed we gave up a couple of draft picks!
