Anthony Armstrong atop the depth chart at receiver

The Redskins have distributed their weekly game release to the media and for the first time this season Anthony Armstrong is atop the depth chart at wide receiver.

Armstrong had 46 yards on 5 catches against Indianapolis, and Coach Mike Shanahan finally has seen enough to list the first-year receiver ahead of Joey Galloway. Shanahan said that Armstrong will start again this Sunday at Chicago.

"He earned the opportunity to start. You talk about everything being in the evaluation process and people work hard and sometimes during practice and other times during games and other times it's a combination of both," Shanahan said on Monday. "We thought that he earned the right to be a starter. We knew that Joey [Galloway] would still play a lot and we've got to have a certain rotation because guys are getting tired. But Anthony deserved the opportunity to start and he'll be a starter next week as well."

Galloway had only one catch for 18 yards against the Colts. He's started five of the team's six games and has only eight receptions for 139 yards on the year. Armstrong has started the past three, and in five total games this season, he has 234 yards on 12 catches.

The only other noticeable change on the depth chart is at the punt returner position, where Brandon Banks is finally listed ahead of Phillip Buchanon.

how's the bears o-line? can we get to the qb?

how's their d-line?

Posted by: walter-in-fallschurch | October 19, 2010 3:29 PM

Cutler has been sacked more than anybody else (27 times). The next closest bunch around 18-19. Eagles QBs have been sacked 20 times, but that is two guys.

The Bears defense is the reason why they're 4-2.

Haynesworth/Redskins divorce complete.

Despite paying Albert Haynesworth 32 million dollars since the start of the 2009 season, the Redskins and Coach Shanahan are breathing a sigh of relief to finally be done with the drama surrounding him. The Redskins sent Haynesworth to the Tennessee Titans, in exchange they will receive a 3rd round pick in 2011, as well as a possible 4th rounder in 2012. More details from both sides to follow.

I love Armstrong as the #2 guy, and I'm quite happy with Galloway as our #3 guy... that's a huge step up from, say, Randle El and Thrash.

It's 4:03, where's the Hanyesworth post?

And one of these days BTG is going to be telling the truth and were going to miss it.

Cry wolf anyone?

Wow, I'm going to stick with the hockey and Caps blogs. I guess you guys didn't read the part about no profanity or personal attacks.

Anyone wanna take a stab at what monk811 would have to say to this? I don't want to say it.

Posted by: PlayAction | October 19, 2010 4:07 PM | Report abuse

walter, I caught that as well -- I assume the depth chart issued by the team lists two "starters" at WR and that Armstrong is among those two for the first time, which is why this is news.

Like this, though this doesn't appear to be "current": http://www.redskins.com/gen/team/depthChart.jsp

Armstrong deserve the start, but he's been out there a lot anyway, not sure if he sees more snaps.

As for the Chicago game, its a bit like every other game. Have Orakpo find the weak link on their OL and exploit that all game long.

With Chi and their miserable OL, Orakpo is gonna have a feast. Could be a massacre if Albert plays well.

Let's get Chris Wilson in there too.

I think we get an early lead on Chicago, then just jailbreak Cutler for the rest of the game.

i agree ih8dallas and none of them would be on the team this year except alexander b/c he was already hear and he probably wouldnt be starting

but they have to keep playing at this level all year and get better

Once again, BeantownGreg's PFT post was a dud. Surprise. We get to keep the big guy for ten more games.

We bomb atomically on the Bears this weekend.

On a side note, why did they do that Rex homecoming piece? McNabb is from Chicago, I bet he has a huge game.

Galloway has 8 catches for 139 yards? - Devin Thomas could have done that and contributed to special teams

Would love to see Brandon Banks in for short screens and reverses. In the Colts game he had a long ball thrown his way Jason, has he been working out more with the offense?

So. This kid received an audition and won the job. I'm all for that and will root for him. But... the guy I was hoping to see (more than once) didn't get on the field because this coach didn't like his personality. Scrooo the Shanahans and the ponies they came in on. I still (and will always) love the Redskins, but I'm gonna be rooting for the team in Baltimore where BS is not allowed.

I think that's a. with an attractive woman scratching his chin, at least until they're shown on the broadcast, at which case she looks like a cat that ate the songbird.

Appearances, G. It's about appearances. Why wasn't he on the sidelines?

Hey I thought this post was about Armstrong how did AH get into it?

You people need to get over AH especially when your reporting about stuff he did in the owners box. That just CRAZY!

If we hadn't givin up so many picks maybe we could have gotten Jackson from SD.

Snyder would not come up with that deal and Shanahan probley would not have like it too.

Truth the Skins need another Big WR.

For the love of all that is good, please wake me when J. Galloway is no longer on the roster.

It's great to finally see young talent on the Redskins making an impact. This is how teams get built.

Maybe the Snyder free agency philosophy is finally coming to an end?

Maybe they should have released Galloway and kept Devin Thomas. Hard to believe Galloway at 38 has more upside than Thomas

JReid afront the line at the Sizzler. "I just do my work to the least of my ability." JReid was a bit disappointed he was third in line yesterday, but his dedication to food is starting to pay off.
