Could Anthony Armstrong surpass Joey Galloway on Redskins' depth chart?

Today's print-edition story focused on the Redskins' lack of production from players not named Santana Moss or Chris Cooley. The two receivers behind Moss - Joey Galloway and Anthony Armstrong - are tied with seven receptions apiece entering Sunday's game against the Colts.

Since Armstrong's 84-yard performance last week against Green Bay, there's been a lot more chatter among fans about the team's No. 2 receiver spot. Galloway has started opposite Moss for all five games this season, though Armstrong has been building a compelling case for more playing time.

Asked whether Armstrong might be ready to start, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said, "He was in the starting lineup last week."

Technically, he's right. The Redskins opened in a three-receiver set last week against the Packers. It marked Armstrong's first career start. But on the depth chart - at least the one distributed to the media - Galloway is still listed ahead of Armstrong. Shanahan wouldn't say whether Galloway will remain ahead of Armstrong.

"He might not be the No. 2 receiver," Shanahan said of Galloway. "We definitely got a No. 1 receiver. Last week, I think there was equally two No. 2 receivers. We'll see who it is this week."

Coach Mike Shanahan was asked on Thursday whether Armstrong might move up the depth chart, to which he responded: "He's going to get a lot of playing time. We don't go through the depth chart for obvious reasons, but if he continues to improve like he's been improving, he'll get a lot of playing time."

Technically, he's right.

By Rick Maese | October 15, 2010; 3:32 PM ET

How about that? He was right, but Maese thinks he's only right by a technical. I guess, technically, no one on the defense was a starter since, technically, the Redskins started out on offense. Or was it the other way around?

So, lem'me get this straight. The guy everyone is calling a stick-in-the-mud has the same amount of catches as our next superstar?

Nobody is calling him a Probowler just yet.
But the games don't lie, he caught 2 40+ yard passes in back to back games on 3rd down. That's clutch and this team could really use someone who steps up and makes plays besides Moss/Cooley.

Too much on Armstrong already. I like the guy and think he has potential but he has a long way to go to look like anything more than a stop gap for this season. Let's talk about how the team dubbed the "oldest roster in the NFL" could possibly have two young promising receivers, two promising young running backs, one promising young offensive tackle, etc., etc., ad nauseum. I guess it is clear now that the "Shana-plan" was to start the season with seasoned veterans and gradually work the young guys into the starting ranks. He's crazy okay - crazy like a fox.

Remember Santana's doctor?

From PFT:

Dr. Galea indicted, players he treated won't be

Posted by Mike Florio on October 15, 2010 2:57 PM ET

As expected, a federal grand jury in Buffalo has indicted Dr. Anthony Galea on five felony counts arising from allegations of smuggling misbranded and unapproved drugs from Canada into the U.S.

The good news for NFL players (and other athletes) is that no charges will be filed against Dr. Galea's patients. "There are no athletes charged with criminal activity," U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Kr. said, per the Buffalo News. "They are viewed as witnesses, rather than as defendants, in this case. Any one of these athletes treated by Dr. Galea could be called as trial witnesses."

The bad news is that being called as trial witnesses means being compelled to testify under threat of contempt of court and penalty or perjury regarding the substances Galea provided. And that testimony could be enough to trigger a suspension under the league's steroids policy.

Though Galea, though his lawyer, has proclaimed his innocence, the defense reminds us of the last-gasp play called by a desperate offense -- the Hail Mary. "Just because a drug is unapproved by the government doesn't mean it's illegal," said Galea's lawyer, Mark J. Mahoney.

We've got a feeling that the connection between the use of unapproved drugs and illegal conduct is a lot more clear and obvious than Mahoney realizes.

Complicating matters for Galea is the apparent fact that his assistant, Mary Anne Catalano, has been "flipped" by the feds, equipping the government with ample evidence regarding the manner in which these "unapproved but not illegal" compounds were secretly smuggled into the United States.

It's soooo unintelligent to be concerned about trading draft picks for a QB whose contract is going to expire after this year. To be concerned about a hyper controlling HC, with a poor recent personnel track record that starts Lichtensteiger and has Haynesworth as a backup.

A coach that allows players to go through camp, pre season, and 2-5 weeks of the regular season THEN cuts them.

A team built from last years IR list And UFAs

So so unintelligent I am

shanny's take: we have 2 no. 2 receivers

my take: AA should definitely get more playing time over joey 'one catch every 2 weeks' galloway

mike wise's take: 'redskins' is racist

If it wasn't for Anthony Armstrong, I'd say we should look at signing Priest Holmes as a wide reciever. ;)

Posted by: skinswillwin | October 15, 2010 4:38 PM | Report abuse

On Armstrong -- he is our #2, doesn't matter what the depth chart says.

On Carter --

I liken him to a starting pitcher who isn't great, but pitches deep into games, every game and keeps you in a position to win. Over the course of a season, he's a leader in innings pitched, which keeps the bullpen fresh.

I like that Carter is on the field a lot, he needs to be on the DL. He best asset is that he can play 60 snaps, the guy has tremendous endurance. Which means you can keep the other DL guys fresh all game. Considering how much our defense is on the field (yeah, you read it in last week's ZEKE'S UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES, a week before Haslett said it), Carter's eating snaps is even more important.

This also doesn't mean that 'Tana still couldn't be subjected to the NFL's drug program. I believe the NFL has enough latitude to make that sort of finding without the benefit of a positive test for steriods, etc.

And the guy who will benefit the most? SM89.

Boy let's hope so. More than anyone Hayney could render Peyton's presnap reads and brilliance irrelevant. You can know who's blitzing every time but if a giant, angry guy is coming at you straight up the middle those pre snap reads mean a whole lot less.
