Making roster not enough for Anthony Armstrong

Once the Redskins took the field in their preseason finale and receiver Anthony Armstrong was among the players who didn't need to dress, it became pretty clear that his spot with the team was safe. And when the 53-man roster was released Saturday, Armstrong wasn't exactly celebrating that he'd made it.

"I've really been taking the whole thing kind of calmly," Armstrong said. "All the time, I thought I'd be doing backflips and jumping up and dpwn. That really hasn't happened yet. I've stayed calm and confident. I feel good because that's the same way I've felt in all of those games."

Armstrong is trying to take the same approach to practice this week as a member of the 53-man roster as he did a week ago as a member of the 80-man.

It's the same mindset," he said. "I really feel like there's like two weeks left of camp and I'm still trying to prove something. I haven't calmed down, haven't relaxed at all. I'm still trying to get better. The next step is to start."

In three preseason games, Armstrong had 101 yards and a touchdown on seven catches. He'd impressed coaches throughout the offseason and their main question entering the preseason was whether his performance translated to game situations. He answered their concerns pretty quickly.

"I would've been on edge if I had been out there making mistakes in those games," he said. "Whenever you go and do your assignment, you know you've played well and done all you could do, everything else will fall into place."

But just being one of six receivers isn't enough. He says he's come too far to settle for simply being on the roster. Though this Sunday could mark his regular-season debut, his goal now is to show coaches that he deserves more reps and can eventually start in this offense.

"I'm still striving," Armstrong said. "There's always something out there that you can reach for if you keep working hard."

gotta love armstrong. probably the most pleasant surprise of the preseason.

back in the spring, when jreid et. al. were posting every day about how AH is on the trading block, there was a poster here called "moodly...moo" who made a bet with someone about whether AH would be on the roster come opening day. moo said AH wouldn't be on the team.

1)with whom did moo make that bet?

2)where the heck is moo, now that that bet is about to be resolved?

I can see this kid kicking some serious @$$ for us. Good receivers can be found anywhere in the draft or free agency, its a funny thing.

Per http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/team/WAS

"Coach Mike Shanahan said that naming what units guys are playing with divulges some of the Redskins' strategy. Teams open practices with the understanding that strategy would not be reported. The league mandates that at least 30 minutes of practice is open to the media."

Whatever happened to Ramzee Robinson, I thought he was a favorite to get on the practice squad? Musta sucked down the stretch, kinda sounds like a night out with Albert at the Jiggly Room!

That was weird. They had a post on AH trade talks, something about close to a deal but compensation still undecided. This has happened before, Reid and company will probably put it back up in the next hour or two.

I LOVE this dude. He's the anti-Albert. Armstrong is one of those players - and I hate to make this comparison - like a Miles Austin. Wouldn't it be nice to have brought in a young player that actually starts to flourish FOR US as opposed to someone else with whom we end up mortgaging our future picks/players/cash for?

Armstrong and banks will both be solid if not cornerstone material going into next year.

BOOK IT.

PS - I love RI betting. It's almost as funny as talking tough in here. This blog is essentially like the Wild West. If you wear out your welcome, change your name and move to the next town.

Lastly, for my freinds of the Jewish persuasion, if Haney gets traded tomorrow, will that day then be known as "Rosh Hashannahan"?

I swear I could take JR's place in here and blow this RI up, global.

They only hired him because they thought he was Shugg Knight and he might have them shot.

I *thought* that it might have been with RomoLongballs, but I really didn't follow the bet closely. There was nothing dishonorable about his leaving, though, as he had an exchange with the other party to the bet before he cowed out. He did say that he would still read the blog, just not contribute. It's too bad because he had an original and unique style -- like Moe, dcsween, RedDMV, and a couple of others up here.

I love Armstrong's attitude. I'm hoping he will become our next Moss. Banks needs to take a lesson from this. Making the team is just the conclusion of step 1. There is much more to accomplish before there is reason to celebrate.

I would love to see Fat Albert traded, But I can't tell if the rumors are for real, or just more Shanahn subterfuge. If it is for real, then I think McNabb's "I don't think we can win without Albert" comments may be part of a design to help boost Fat Albert's trade value. Albert never attends half time meetings? Yet more evidence that he is only interested in doing what he wants and is not a team player.

It's all part of Shanny's mad-science. Right about now, Dallas-fan, The Fade, Bony Homo, Doug Free-Bird and Dez "My Mom's A Hooker" Bryant are all breathing a sigh of relief with this perceived notion of not having to prepare for Fat Albert.

Pretty soon, Shanny is going to take the leash off Haney like Peter North takes off his condom just before the money shot.
