Archer Replaces Octavien

The Redskins have signed linebacker Brandon Archer to their practice squad, replacing linebacker Steve Octavien, the team announced. Octavien was signed to the Dallas Cowboys' active roster.

Archer, who will wear No. 56, is a 6-foot, 230-pound player who spent most of last season on Indianapolis' active roster and practice squad. In six games with the Colts, he had 10 tackles with the defense and four on special teams. He spent a week on Minnesota's practice squad after being released by the Colts at the end of training camp. Archer, 25, played at Kansas State and originally signed with Indianapolis as a free agent.

from the previous post, I believe Stacey Andrews plays for Cincy, and is the brother of Shaun Andrews who plays for Philly.

Anyone else think its odd how many dudes have been poached from our practice squad?

Posted by: chrislarry | December 3, 2008 11:48 AM | Report abuse

anyone know anything about these two free agents?

Stacey Andrews, Browns O-lineman

Brandon McKinney, Ravens D-line. both are free agents and relatively young. Maybe one of you guys out there knows if they'd help our lines and I think they'd be a lot cheaper than Haynesworth etc..

The only upside is someone took Big Daddy off the skins hands for a first rounder (or two?)

Posted by: TheCork | December 3, 2008 11:31 AM |

Wilkinson was cut -- we got nothing for him. We traded Sean Gilbert to Carolina for two first rounders. He played for them a few years, broke his hip, and that was it.

BeantownGreg

You are right! Got my Ohio teams mixed up. Still, does anyone think these two young players would upgrade our lines and what the value should be?

I would also at LBWestbrook as DB

Wow this is a bigger story than Plaxico shooting himself. Can Archer come uncovered in a blitz and get to a QB.

Posted by: joeboggs | December 3, 2008 11:52 AM | Report abuse

I'd take Stacey in a second, as a free agent. Plug him in at RG.

No, it's just one more sign of what Cork and Jack keep saying, over and over: "That Vinny sure is good a picking good talent! This team would be going nowhere without him."

No...same reason you shop the Goodwill store in the more affluent neighborhood. Too much money often leads to too much unnecessary waste. One person's trash is another person's treasure.

Flounder, I was thinking of John Archer from Star Trek Enterprise

Q. Why did the lepers stop the hockey game?
A. Because there was a face off in the corner.

Didn't we get Mix from the Giants practice squad last year? Also, the packers took Ryan Grant from the Giants practice squad last year......nice steal there, so it does soemtimes happen.

I LOVE EVERYONE

Aparently there are only 7 NFL players right now from the DC area, not quite enough for a team though it would not be a bad start to a roster if you wanted a runing team.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 3, 2008 11:43 AM |

Dude we have WAAAAAY more than just 7 NFL players from the area. Just to name a few:

Leftwich, Jerry Porter, Josh Wilson, D Foxworth, The Westbrook Brothers (2), D Harvey, Josh Cribbs, Vernon Davis, Heyer, LT from Baltimore.

That's 10 right there off top of my head. And there's plenty more if I really thought about it.....

MARCUS MASON!!! $#%*!
Still upset about that one.

You can be upset about Marcus Mason as soon as he gets his first NFL carry.

Posted by: daggar | December 3, 2008 12:07 PM | Report abuse

daggar,
Understood, but we all saw him this preseason. He is going to be a stud. Not a #1 back stud, but an excellent #3 speller back. You know...exactly like we need now.

I could be wrong, but I really liked what I saw this pre-season from him.

Oh well...such is Redskins football.

Redskins needs to compete for SB next year and beyond.

1st - As stated mulitple times this week, OL Tackles, particularly RT.

2nd - Explosive Special Teams player, we do not have a single explosive special teams only player, we need at least a special Kicker, Punter, Return man, the Redskins have average players at best and the good times have at least 1 special player in this critical phase of the game. I know you may say D-Line/WR but you add points/field position/eplosive plays if you improve this area.

3rd - Dominant Defensive Stud, this is where we were golden with Sean Taylor but the tragic events that took him from the redskins family and more importantly his own family have made this a priority again, these players can be found in lower first rounds and even in second and thrid rounds but we need to invest if necessary in special talent in the draft and not trade second round picks for guys like taylor. Good players found at the bottom of the draft 1st round, Antonio Cromartie, Luis Castillo, Vince Wilfolk, Jared Allen, all picks 19th and lower.

Lastly, Free Agent positions to aviod paying big money too, WR, DE, CB and RB..these positions seem to be first year bust with teams minus TO who usually blows up the second year.
