Award Time

(Amended from this morning in light of recent events).

-5 TCCLs - US Soccer Federation. Six months and you still don't have a coach. Great work. If you blow it with Klinsi you'll be hearing about it on this 'lil blog for a long, long time. Why do I feel like these people are going to end up setting the sport back 20 years here? If they hire from within MLS, the bonfire will be in my back yard (small as it is). Bring all of your old US Nats jerseys with you - and a six-pack of Carlsberg, each - and we'll offer them up tot he soccer gods. But we should keep one in good condition, and get "Klinsi" put on the back. Then at the next WCQ at RFK, we all sit on section, and before the game turn our backs at once, and let the cameras see like a few hundrded people making a statement. I'm holding to the notion that Klinsi' public statement is a last hardball gersture to force their hand. I'm sorry, but who is more qualified for this job?

0 TCCLs - Redskins front office. Let's take all of the free-agent busts out of it. The team couldn't find six tickets for the group of Skins fans heading to New Orleans next week to help rebuild the city. Hmm, somehow if TomKat, or the crazy dancing dude from the Six Flags commercials or some corporate bigwig bozo wanted to go to the game with a few pals, I bet those tickets would have gotten into their hands. Okay, maybe not the dancing guy - I think he got the boot - but you get the idea.

1 TCCLs - Brandon Lloyd. 'Nuff said.

2 TCCLs - Officiating uniforms. Anyone else get the willies when they see these new long pants the refs are wearing? Look like full-length hockey pants. Cooperalls for everyone! (my hockey peeps will feel me on that one).

2 TCCLs - Christmas tree stands. I'm sorry, they all sink. What an ordeal last night. The drill would not charge so I couldn't get a hole in the bottom of the tree. So the tree is sitting in a bucket of water on the porch, my wife finally decided she doesn't want to wait for the drill to charge anymore, so she goes out for another stand - the kind that screws in from the side (there goes another $20 bucks) - while I watch Chloe. I still end up having to drill a small hole in the tree, I actually get it up fairly quickly ... and Chloe is essentially freaked out by the sight of this green, portly shrub in our living room. Not that I'm blaming her. Hopefully, it will grow on her. She's definitely big into this whole Christmas thing, so I'm thinking once we get it decorated today it'll win her over.

4 TCCLS - Washington Post columnists. Wilbon brings the midweek Thunder, then Bos gets Coach Joe to breakdown and admit he might need to bring in a GM after all. My boys are swinging lumber.

4 TCCLs - Ladell Betts. Ran hard as hell Sunday. The O-Line was great in front of him, but their issues in pass protection keep them from getting more TCCL luv. Betts missed a key blitz pick up, but was otherwise stellar.

5 TCCLs - Larry. The blog regular has sent me some killer stats this week. Take a looksee: "since gibbs has been back, we've played 9 division road those 9 games, we've scored more then 14 points in only one philly last those 9 games, we scored zero offensive TD's 5 times ... in the 24 regular season games they've lost, they've had the lead at some point in the 2nd half in 12 of those losses...7 of the losses have been at home....of those 12 losses, only 2 teams made the playoffs...if the falcons make it this year, it will be 3 teams......3 of those 12 losses, they had a 10 point lead in the 2nd half...all 3 of those were at home.... on the other hand....they've come back from a 2nd half deficit 7 times...only once from a 10+ point deficit....that was the monday night game against dallas."

5 TCCLs - The group of Skins fans heading to N'Orleans to help volunteer down there next week. You guys rock.

5 TCCL's to Wilbon, for beating Joe over the head with the obvious.

5 TCCLs to my fellow blogster and a big fat 0 TCCL to me:

Since I don't have 'net access during the day anymore at my new client site, I miss multitasking during the day with the blog, but thanks to ALL for making me evening and morning breakfast reading so friggin' hilarious that milk sometimes shoots out of my nose. Which can be painful when there is also cereal involved, but I digress....

Don't hate the n00b, but what does "TCCL" stand for? I've been trying to figure it out for a while and finally figured I'd break down and ask.

1 TCCL to Boofers uncle for sucking it up and saying "You know, she's really not that young", as his niece turned away from her fisher price airport...

Boof - tell mom and dad I said hi.

0 TCCL- Boofer/Skins Suck/the artist formerly known as boofer- He's gotten bitter lately. I liked it better when he just ranted nonsensically about boohoo boxes and what bozo skinny fans we were.

1 TCCL- Tony Romo, it's one thing to suck. I am used to that. It's like Boofers caps eventually it doesn't bother you so much anymore. But to suck and then have Dallas get what looks to be their QB for many years to come, undrafted has sent me into a deep depression.

1 TCCL-B. Lloyd, can't beleive i held out till week 9 to bash you. You sir are an idiot.

2 TCCL- Defense, thanks for the 5 quarters of good football. It took me back to 04, 05. Then you reverted back to your skineptitude that is the 06 season.

3 TCCL- Jason Cambell, bad game but keep your head up and "fight your guts out".

4 TCCL- Ladell Betts, good running. I don't think you are a starting RB in the league and I hope we don't pay you like one but good job never the less.

5 TCCL-Holiday time, For one month a year I can drink whenever I want and dismiss any notion of dependance by chalking it up to holiday cheer.

Jason, Jason, yourself a favor and get yourself a high-quality pre-lit tree and a can of pine scent. Up in less than 10 minutes and ready to decorate. No more fighting with strings of lights or misbehaving tree stands. Sure, you miss some of the tradition and nostalgia of a real tree, but it goes up when you want and stays up forever without leaving a trail of needles for Chloe to put in her mouth.

You may now resume Redskins talk...sorry for the interruption.

cheers to the holidays. Is it too early to start? A lady here just asked what present to get her daughters BF. I recommended one of the following dvd's:

1. My member the Titan
2. Saving Ryan's Privates

Anyone else know of a good flick?

3 TCCL for Jane Doe, you make me laugh everyday. (I just picture you as being the old lady from Nutty Professor chasing after the young and slim Sherman Klump)
3 TCCL for Campbell, had a bad game but said all the right things this week.
3 TCCL for Coach Joe, I hope you really do bring in a GM.
4 TCCL for Betts, good running but pick up the damn blitz.
5 TCCL for JLC & Cindy, you guys make my day at work go so much faster with the blog. (looking over my shoulder for boss)
5 TCCL for Scott and the crew going to New Orleans.

Just read Boz's new column interviewing Gibbs. Excellent read. After reading it, this is my wish list for the Skins:

(1) Gibbs tosses Saunders to the wayside and re-gains control of the offense and the team.

(2) Demote Breaux and Buges -- I love them, but we need some young blood -- and convince Russ Grimm to join the team as OC-Asst HC. Keep Lazor to assist in the passing game.

(3) Toss Grilliams and Lindsey and promote Blache to DC. Every time I hear Blache interviewed I love what he says. And I've never heard a player - current or ex - speak badly of him. They love him.

(4) Coax Ron Wolf (who lives in Annapolis for crying out loud) out of retirement. It'll be easier than you think because Snyder has really stepped back out of the football decisions, so Wolf should have less worries about that.

(5) Cut loose the malcontent player(s).

(6) Use the 1st round pick on the best available defensive player.

(7) Throw money at Lance Briggs. We desperately need another playmaker at LB. But this must be the only major spend. Forget about Clements -- he is way overrated.

(8) Run training camp and the preseason games like they actually matter, because they do.

The Post is reporting that The Danny is overpaying for classical radio station WGMS. That's so unlike him. Can it play safety?

Posted by: SMACK | December 8, 2006 10:22 AM | Report abuse

I almost totally agree with CMoney.

With the exception of #7. No more throwing money at people.

Also throw in, move camp back to Carlysle, PA and away from Redskins Park. I was lucky enough to get to go to some camps as a kid with the skins and sleep on the trainers cots while eating with the team and going to practices. The players loved it up there and that's where the team bonded each year.

It has become common slang to "nuke" a meal, but microwave ovens do not make food radioactive or utilize any kind of nuclear reaction. Microwaves are in the same electromagnetic class as radio waves. X-rays and nuclear radiation are millions of times more powerful. If you were to heat up your burrito with nuclear fission, it would vaporize along with the rest of your neighborhood.

PG, true story:

A buddy of mine just recently ordered, as a gift, a Grey's Anatomy box set from a major online CD/DVD retailer. He received it in the mail and opened it up to prepare for the giving, but found instead...

ba da ba bum BA BUUUUUUUUMMMM...

"My Friend's Hot Mom: Volume 3"

Oddly enough the retailer said he did not need to return the DVD in order to get his actual order. Seems like some Holiday Spirit to me... gift for her... gift for him.

Oh, and by the way, "Jurassic Pork" has always made me chuckle.

It's not the front office structure that's the problem.

The Redskins fly in other team's players, give them $10 million, and hand them starting jobs, sometimes over guys who've been with the team for a few years or were even draftees.

That's the real problem.

It's a substance issue, not a structure issue.

I would much prefer Gibbs remain in charge of overseeing the personnel stuff, but just build through the draft. Change that part up.

To me, adding a GM is just going to add another layer of red tape this team doesn't need.

And, let's face it, if a GM were hired, it's not going to be just that GM's vision, just like the offense isn't just Saunders vision.

Gibbs and Snyder are going to have things their way.

Any GM they bring in is just going to be a puppet GM basically.

So why bother.

The Post should be badgering them about building through the draft, not about a bringing in a useless GM who'd be powerless anyway.

Who is in charge of the scouts now, and would the GM assume that responsibility?

Substance - true. If we could straighten out the "what" of who we are bringing in, I think that would help a ton. Arch/Lloyd obviously were names people bought and not as talented as their paychecks deem them. That is the job of GM, adding value through every transaction.

-isn't donny warren a scout???-

Posted by: Pub Golf | December 8, 2006 10:51 AM | Report abuse

Another thing I forgot to mention:

how many more times do I need to see fans criticize the Redskins for their free agent activity and then suggest fixing the team by adding more free agents (Freeney, Clements, Justin Smith, Briggs, etc.)?

I see it every year and it's just laughable.

A lot of the Redskins fans are just as bad as the team's front office, including Gibbs.

They want a quick fix just as bad as Snyder...and why?

Because they're too obsessed with the team to wait for the draft every year. They want instant action, and action involving players/names that they know.

It's a culture surrounding the Redskins, one that goes back to George Allen, that Snyder himself came out of.

More people need to recognize this.

What about Gibbs personell decisions thus far have made you hope he retains the GM position?

Was it letting go of:

Ryan Clark

Making Bingus the highest paid safety in the history of the NFL?

Giving up a 3rd and 4th round draft pick for Brandon Lloyd then tearing up his contract and paying him like an Elite #1 reciever.

Paying Carter a ton of money when he had had 8 sacks since 03?

Side note: The guy that replaced Lloyd in San Fran has 42 catches and like 800 yards. I don't remember his name but don't worry, you wouldn't know him anyway.

Posted by: Skinz | December 8, 2006 10:54 AM | Report abuse

I just heard a "rumor" on 980 that the Ladell Betts contract extension might include a 6-7 mill signing bonus.

Again, I love Ladell, but that would be INSANE. Not nearly as insane as the AA deal, but a close second.

I guess we'll see how this plays out...

I like the new ref unis. The black pants are nice...

I dont know about the Betts signing. Snyder has put himself into a bad position. If he doesnt resign him, then Betts is just another drafted redskin that was let go... on the other hand if he does give him 6 mil he's overpaying for a #2 back. a smart GM would look at the Portis contract, suck it up, draft a RB and make the decision to let Betts walk, but we dont have one on staff, so...

4 TCCLs to Skinz for the perfect new word "Skineptitude"

3 TCCLs for mr. poo yesterday and SMACK today with recommendations to fill in a safety, with Joe Salave'a and a classical music station, respectively.

1 TCCLs for people who keep asking what TCCL means without scanning the archives for the post every Friday called "Award Time" (no TCCLs for people who ask when its already been answered within the same thread).

4 TCCLs for T.O. who continues to drop balls that actually hit his hands and leads the league in doing so (12).

1 TCCL for the Dallas fan who awards 10 TCCLs on a scale from 1-5. This guy gives 110% in practice and awards TCCLs his guts out.

4 TCCLs for J-La for another awesome week on the beat (that's otherwise a perfect 5 but 1 couch leap subtracted for toughing it out and not completely throwing in the towel on a formerly live tree for the sake of a sparkly white fake tree from a consignment shop).

5 TCCLs for Rock Cartwright for being one of the only standouts in the Atlanta game (includes unawarded TCCLs from over the course of the season).

Updated anthrax list after last night:

1a. Basedow... still holds the honor, mainly because of the quarter turn pose and the new blond hair... and even abs.

1b. Gumbel... what a riser he has been on the list. Last night he didn't make nearly as many mistakes, but he was still dreadful to listen to. His call on Pittsburgh's first TD, about a 50-60 yard strike from Big Ben, carried as much enthusiasm as a 2 yard run up the gut should.

I don't care who is above the scouts. It's Joe's team. Joe constantly says it's his fault. Unless anyone has any proof otherwise all this lies at the feet of one of two men.

Danny or Joe. The buck stops there.

Cliff --

There isn't a team in the NFL that doesn't use free agency as a method of filling holes -- even the holier than thou Patriots use it. Suggesting a free agent signing does not go hand-in-hand with dumping on the draft. Most of us agree that free agency should be a means of supplementing your drafted players, not as the primary method of acquiring players.

And you have to agree that, before this year, Gibbs' free agent/trade acquisitions have been a mostly a success (Washington, Griffin, Springs, Moss etc have done very well). The problem they ran into was that they relied on it too much and got their hand caught in the cookie jar this year with Archie, ARE, Lloyd, Duckett and 2%.

The "fix" is definitely to rely more heavily on the draft as the main acquisition point for players. But that doesn't mean scrapping free agency. It means using free agency wisely. And, IMO, Lance Briggs would be an excellent addition to a position of great need. But he's as far as I would go.

jason and my skin peeps, what was so BIG news about the bos article? gibbs been saying the same thing since they lost to tennessee...

here's what i read: "...This is what I do -- pick people. This is all I'm doing,..." Gibbs said, holding his hands wide, perhaps mocking his NFL CEO image. "It's what it's always been about -- in football and the race team."

so gibbs is going to hire a gm that has full control of the team and over him?

my fellow skins fans, please don't fall in this trap...AGAIN. he's lied to us over and over again. please don't fall for this. and get your brown bags ready for sunday!

My last Christmas tree story: Way back in the day when I was married I was responsible for decorating and "un-decorating" the tree every year (our tree was artificial). I got so tired of taking down the tree and suggested to my then husband that we just take the decorated tree to the storage house - it would be ready for following Christmas. Sad to say this did not work out well...everything fell apart..ornaments fell off, etc. on the way to storage. Since I've been single I never bother with a tree anymore. Call me Scrooge.

Posted by: Lisa | December 8, 2006 11:15 AM | Report abuse

The Patriots and Eagles and Steelers don't even have a single GM who controls everything.

They generally do things in a kind of trifecta like the Redskins do.

Pioli's basically the Cerrato of the Patriots. He huddles with Belichick and Kraft like Cerrato does with Gibbs and Snyder.

Reid operates with Tanner and Lurie.

The Steelers, from what I've read, do things by committee (coaching staff, front office, head coach, etc.) just like the Redskins do.

Instead they just have a philosophy of building through the draft and looking for "finds" in the free agency. This is what the Redskins should do under their current set-up...instead of basically ignoring the draft and splurging in free agency.

It would be a seamless transition and probably more precise as opposed to bringing in one GM and going through the cumbersome process of changing everything to his vision.

The Redskins aren't going to do the latter anway because they are simply not going to bring one guy in and let his single vision rule over theirs, especially when the league's top teams don't even do that.

So, to me, there's really no point in this whole GM thing being a story in this town.

The Redskins need to be badgered about the substance of what they do. Gibbs is hiding behind the whole GM thing right now. The media aren't asking about the actual philosophy of what they do and he's probably glad because I doubt he really wants to change it.

The Redskins shouldn't ignore free agency. They should just do it right and in a way that minimizes risk.

The Patriots, as you noted, do it the right way: they look for cheap finds.

The Redskins splurge like addicts in free agency and then give away draft picks in order to splurge even more.

I'd also reevaulate the 2004 free agent class, once seemingly great, in light of what's happened this year: Griffin, Washington, and Springs haven't exactly tore things up. Griffin and Springs are becoming injury riddled as well.

It all adds up to what has become Gibbs's free agency nightmare.

Posted by: Cliff Huxtable | December 8, 2006 11:25 AM | Report abuse

"They generally do things in a kind of trifecta like the Redskins do."

That may be true. But it's the structure and parts that are different.

After all as Bruce Dickinson once said, "I put my pants on just like the rest of you - one leg at a time. Except, once my pants are on... I make gold records."

Maybe it's the triuverate (no, not the pope, the queen and col. Sanders before he went tets up.) But their remain start contrasts.

They have a core philosophy that they follow.

Pioli is good at personel, Vinnie at Raquetball.

Pioli works for Kraft. Equal to Billy.

Vinnie works for Joe. Is in his employ.

Stark not start.

Posted by: Skinz | December 8, 2006 11:26 AM | Report abuse

Titles are worthless. A GM for one team is a Director of Personnel on another. The bottom line is that the Skins need a strong figure to oversee player acquisition. That doesn't mean that Gibbs relinquishes all say in the matters -- he certainly had a say when Beathard was here -- but his wasn't the ONLY voice, which is the problem right now.

If you think Cerrato has an ounce of the power that Pioli has you are delusional. I have no problem with Gibbs having a say in the types of players he wants, but I do have a problem with the team continuing to move forward without somebody who can tell Gibbs that trading a 3rd round pick for a back-up RB insurance policy who will be a free agent at the end of the year is much too risky.

and i see this lady in a car that left her starbucks on top of her car. so i run over to the front of her car and put my hand up like a traffic police signaling STOP. and as i'm walking over to remove the starbucks cup and hand it over to her she's saying something to me and i can't hear cuz i have the headphones on and my hat on. so i grab the cup and i notice it's stuck to the car. i pull harder. and i feel a tug on my NORTH FACE jacket and it finally occurs to me to take my headphones off and listen to this pretty lady. and she says...

"it's okay, it's a promotion we're doing for good's a gift card for $5 from starbucks!"

1 TCCL: the defense. One inspired week does not a season make. Just do better. Repel them! Repel them! Make them relinquish the ball! (Best cheer ever)

1 TCCL: people reading and responding to the chancelor of choochtown (dallas). Someone else pointed it out last week I think but, we should be using the 'Simpsons Tree House of Horror Paradigm' of 'Just Don't Look'. I have skipped every one of that plumber's posts and it feels good. Especially since they censor stuff so absurdly on the Dallas version of this blog. They take down my inflamatory comments every time I try and post there. Like last week, I may have mentioned that all the cowboy fans were soulless devil worshipers who put money in the pocket of a yea-oh sniffing plastic embassador of evil...and they took that down. Bunch of bamas at that 'news' outlet...

5 TCCL: The Kid. Just give me a reason to have a little hope.

This is the most disappointed I have been in Washington sports in a long time. Two Wizards games were on this past week, and I didn't watch either one. At all. Didn't care if they won or lost. I didn't care about missing Buckhantz and Chenier. I am going to the Skins game on Sunday and I don't care. I am just going.

I am sad. I hope Campbell turns out to be what I thought he was when we drafted him.

One last random thing, but the Jacksonville Jaguars are the biggest idiots in the world. What a disaster. They draft a franchise QB who is a great leader and a great person. They make the playoffs last year and then they bought the hype about their lousy back-up and threw Leftwich under the bus. Ugh. How stupid are front office people and coaches? I mean seriously.

Even upset Brazil on a throw-in awarded via computer glitch from the end line next to Brazil's goal. Opponent was so busy yelling at the TV video-Klinsman headed it in without opposition.

There is a reason you are hiring a European star ex-player and coach... HE KNOWS MORE THAN US!!

Give him all the power and hope that he takes us to the next level. If not, can anyone really blame the US Soccer Federation for giving him too much power? No.

So give it to him already...

meg, can you suggest a good tea place in dc?

The Smile Herb Shop, over near College Park, or you can just shop (amazing isn't it?) and see if they have what you want before you go.

Since your a bloggy-mate, I guess I should warn you before you go, it's a very girly place. But don't send your woman, she won't come back for hours(well, maybe that's a good thing?) and she'll put a serious dent in the credit card.

Posted by: Megskin | December 8, 2006 1:30 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, but the USMNT has to be comprised of US soccer players. With the paucity of USMNT players in the league (T Ho, Convey, and Hahnemann are the first 3 that come to my mind, but they are all known commodities) I can't see how a Premiership coach gives much scouting advantage.

Besides, moving from Premiership manager to USMNT head coach is a major demotion. That's what's so galling about not hiring Klinsi. Here's a guy that is very interested in moving from a far more glamorous and successful national team to the minor leagues (albeit the high minor leagues) of world soccer and we're failing to hire him.

Who the hell do we think is queuing up for this job, anyway?

If a Premiership coach spots talent on the US team while coaching, he can send word back to the EPL, get him signed over there and help cultivate the US talent pool.

That makes a little more sense than pulling dudes from the premiership or other european leagues, but I still don't see much merit in it. Between the Premiership teams' scouting departments and the lure of bigger money abroad, talent migration from the MSL to foreign leagues is going to/already is happening (viva the free market!)

However, I do agree with the premise that we need more of the USMNT playing abroad. I'd definitely like to see Clint Dempsey, as well as (much as this would hurt DC United) Bobby and Esky start playing abroad in the near future.

100% serious about the Super Ad competition. I fly at 6am tomorrow to Denver, have a 90 second slot somewhere between 12-4pm, and then fly back to Seattle right after I'm done.

I don't usually enter contests. The prizes are almost always lame, no matter what it is. But this one was clear that it's a game of skill, not chance, and that there's a distinct possibility that no one's ad will be selected and the NFL's ad agency (which I believe is BBDM) might end up having to make up one of its own.

I've spent my life being a marketing genius, a football fan, and an eccentric. This was a contest that lets me combine all three of my life skills.

Plus, oddly enough, my travel schedule this year will put me about 2,000 miles short of United 1K status. Seattle-Denver round-trip is, wow, 2400 miles :-)

YOU GUYS FUNNY!!!! ha, ha, ha!!!

I've gotten rather addicted to this thing. (I copy it late in the evening and go home and read it on my unconnected computer. I really should be writing my book.)

Re : Let's hit the Danny where it counts....the wallet.

If the Skins win the next three games in a row - FedEx F will be packed with no tickets available and next seasons season's tickets will be gone and it will be full again. Hope eternally springs eternal.

Re: Why does the Danny do it the way he does? (or for that matter most of the other professional club owners)

These guys are smart business people. They've learned how to do things in the field of business. The NFL, NBA, NHL, etc. are different in the sense that even if you bring in the best coaches and the players with the most talent - which the Danny is doing - the intangible is the ability of the PLAYERS to work together on the field. Working together is not really the proper lexicon. It's much more than that - it's the on-field sense of what is going on at any given moment and adjusting accordingly - and not just at any given moment but as the game and season unfold. (Brady has "it." His qb rating was lower than MB's after 8 games when NE was 6-2.) The Danny thinks (thought?) that he could apply the same methods to make a winning team that he could with building a large company. But football/sports is a team performance where you see the results in real time. One cannot expect the same results as you can by doing it the way you build theme park or cable company. (But even the most successful company constantly make mistakes or have inefficiencies.) Hell, even BBM and MHarrison have been together for EIGHT years and have not yet been to the SB.

The other thing about owning a professional team is that it is either a "plaything" or a passion for the owners and of course, when one has a deep emotional tie - well, as we all know, sometimes logic is not quite the reasoning behind decision making process. For the Danny, this applied to him pre-Gibbs II. Since then, since he admires JG so much, he has backed off. I do believe that he is just as frustrated as us Core Skins are. I've been a fan since '73 when I was a just a boy.

(Thank goodness for the Nats and that Peter Angelos doesn't own the Skins. The O's lost me as a fan because of him - much, much worse.)

I think that in the Gibbs Series 2 that Danny, Gibbs and co. (DGC) were/are in too much of a hurry to build a SB club. I think eventually (more or less than JG's 5 yrs? I don't know) the DGC would be able to find the right combination of high priced FA's to win a SB. Until then all I can do is cheer them when they win and cringe when they don't.

Gggrrrilliams should play Archibingus if only to reduce wear and tear on the other safeties who will be back next season.
Speaking of next season - I think almost all the coaches will be back again - except MAYBE Gggrrrilliams if the defense continues to bottom feed the rankings - but it wouldn't be his choice- who'd want to hire him if the Skins end up ranked 30th?

Does someone have a list of all the players picked up by teams of the Skins draft choices that they have traded away - not swapped? (At least for the last five years)

I know we should ignore Boof(oon)er, Suck, and/or Nobody/Nothing but it is hard for me. Not because he tries to diss the Skins (It's only a game. I have friends who are Cowpoke friends and I have even seen a Dallas/GB game in Dallas - in a suite, too! No, I didn't pay to get in.) but because it really bothers me that I actually share the same genetic material as this lily-livered COWARDLY piece of...... The reason that I call him a coward is because if Dallas started losing and the Skins started winning that he would not even bother reading this and plus he hides behind his anonymity since he can't even identify himself with a nom de plume or has to constantly change his name. Biggest chicken in all the world.

I think we gave a third round pick to Denver.

Force of habit.

It was for the immediate money. Good job Betts!

From John Clayton:

Ladell Betts considered hitting the lucrative free-agent market in 2007, but he opted to go with the safe money of the Washington Redskins.

Betts, 28, signed a five-year extension Friday worth $11 million, but the key was in the early payout of the deal. He got $3.5 million in signing bonus money this year and a $2 million roster bonus in 2007. With half of the money going to him early, Betts figured it was the best of all worlds.

Most importantly, he wanted to stay with the Redskins and head coach Joe Gibbs. He's comfortable working with Clinton Portis and being part of a one-two running punch. The 5-10, 222-pound back is in his fifth season with the team. He was a second-round choice in 2002.

With Portis on the injured reserve list, Bettis is having a career year. He's rushed for 643 yards on 141 attempts, career highs. He's also caught 50 passes for 301 yards. Last week against Atlanta he rushed for 155 yards.

P Diddy,

Last comment = straight comedy. We might have sent a 3rd to Jax as well.

I guess the re-signing of Betts means that we have officially wasted a 3rd round pick and probably cost TJ, personally, millions upon millions of dollars.

This has to go down as one of the biggest bone head moves in NFL history. I mean, look at Philly last year. Westbrook went down, Buckhalter went down... did you see them go out and give up a 3rd rounder for a guy that didn't play? NOPE!!!! They played the guys they had, which for us would have meant Betts, Rock, and maybe someone else like Lumsden. Why give up a 3rd for a guy you aren't going to play... then not even go to the playoffs.

I just can't voice how angry I am over this.

Ricky Bobby you know he is going to sign with Philly and kills us next year. Damn there goes my day.

Wow... if those numbers are accurate, that is a very reasonable deal. Good job, Betts... and good job, FO!

Klinsi is gone. I think we should hire a coach out of the Premier League for one reason. If there is talent here he can go back to the coaches there and tell them to go after a guy. That would help us immensely.

Who would you get? The only one that I'd consider is Big Sam, and he's not going to leave. US Soccer HAS to get Klinsi. If US Soccer hires out of MLS, it will be like England hiring Sven.

Posted by: Deanna | December 8, 2006 3:22 PM | Report abuse

I think the Betts deal is great. It is a reasonable price for a dependable backup RB, and it uses ths year's cap space, if I am correct (the 3.5 million signing bonus).

Ricky Bobby, I agree that TJ Duckett got screwed by us this year. I feel awful for him, although I do think the Eagles example is a little rough because they were awful last year. I don't know if I would look at that as a shining example of how to handle injuries. Regardless, I am happy for the Skins and Betts.

Might this be considered some sort of continui... conti... I can't seem to remember the word, but it means the same thing year in, year out. I'll google it and see if I can figure it out...

If you're going to do a pub crawl, u should play pub golf - it's silly stupid.

get into teams (2's/3's or 4's) and the scoring system is as follows:

Each round is a "hole"
no drink +2
domestic beer +1
mixed drink/shooter/strong beer is par
double mixed drink/shot/carbomb -1
Long Island Iced Tea -2

18 holes is tough. 20 minutes per hole. We played it in Indy and accidentally blacked out by #10.

betts resigned but no details? really guys, if gibbs was so serious about hiring a GM he wouldn't have resigned betts. you know what i mean? he's not giving up draft picks but he's tying up lot of money in a position that we don't need a starter for...

in other words this team needs starters(D line, O line, LB, DB...) in a LOTS of other positions than it needs backups in ANY position.

Posted by: dealer | December 8, 2006 3:40 PM | Report abuse

Geez, maybe we can get Ted Leonis and the Danny to switch teams - an even straightup trade. Ted is such a great owner.

Posted by: charlie | December 8, 2006 3:40 PM | Report abuse

Credit to the FO for getting keeping one of our own.

For the Record, I believe that Philly traded a 4th rounder, and Mark Simoneau to NO for Donte Stallworth, who is also a free agent, and will probably hit the market after this year.

Dealer --

Don't overpay for monster cables. Not necessary unless the cable run is longer than 25 feet. Get the radio shack brand. Or try this website (this is where I get my HD cables and they are excellent):

Diddy - keep us posted on how you do. I want the exclusive blog interview rights if you win this thing. No talking to the Moonies.

Jame Doe - Are you truly a female, or is this a stunt?

Skinz - If there is any rough itenerary for this pub crawl? I've got the Chloestir all day tomorrow, we live in Arlington, and I think she'd get a kick out of hanging with some drunk Santas. Seriously. My wife'll be none the wiser (she's X-Mas shopping all day tomorrow).
Let me know where you guys will be around 4. She should be through here post-nap mad-at-the-world-stage by then, and god knows I'll need a beer.

Bob Bradley? This has to be a joke. Seriously, it's only one of the most important jobs on the planet - in every country except this one, but still, overall, come on. Why not just hire like Tommy Lasorda and Scotty Bowman?
