Bethesda It Is(Updated)

My plans for the week are changing a bit, so as a result we're going to have to go with Bethesda for the Thursday happy hour. After the Comcast taping is over (6:30), I'll head over to Caddies, which I am told is on Cordell Ave. So see ya there

Looks like the family will be heading to the motherland - Baltimore - to spend some time with my folks, so I'll be heading back to B-more Thurs. night. I get done with Comcast at 6:30 and traffic stinks, so I'll have like 90 minutes or so to have a beer and some nachos and hang out before I even bother trying to drive hom.

So anyone who is up for meeting up, that's what will work this week. I prooise to do something in DC/Nova during the week of July 23. I will be home alone that week and can get out one night. We'll figure that out later. Also, any in B-more on Wed. looks like I'll be watching the US Under-20 soccer match at Claddagh Pub in Canton, so if you're in the area stop in and say hi.

Hope you guys had a great weekend and hopefully I'll get a chance to connect with a few of you on Thursday.

Cheers.

As luck would (NOT) have it, I have a Farewell Happy Hour for a co-worker on Thursday in the Penn Quarter area....hopefully I can make the next one.

JLa;

I would love to meet up to watch our future. We seem to have had many players who were great in U-20's but never pan out. Hopefully this is not the case for this group.

What time does the match start?

Posted by: Zebra | July 9, 2007 11:12 AM | Report abuse

How neato that the "luckiest day ever", 7/7/7, would be quickly followed by a Friday the 13th (cue the Count Floyd "ow-ow-OWOOOO").

Love to be there, but I no longer live on Leland St. in Bethesa and LA is too far away.

Instead, have ordered in a case of OLD FROTHINSLOSH, "The Pale Stale Ale with the Foam on the Bottom." It tastes like crud on a stick but reminds me of my first wife, who also had foam on the bottom.

Anyway, I'll toast to all and sundry in Absentia, (an LA suburb just west of Placentia.)

Wish I could accomodate everyo0ne. Hopefully more of you guys will be able to do something the week of the 23rd.
The match begins at 7:45 on Wed. Don't worry about all of those BSSC wackos - we're cool with the owner and well find a spot to watch the match with sound at one of the bars in there, even if its upstairs.

Holy smokes, it's TWO MONTHS TO KICKOFF!!!

HOLY SHTI! that's only 60 days.

take out 16 days for weekends(to get work done before skins start playing). so that's 44 days.

take out vacation days (10 for me). that's 34 days.

take out 4 preseason games and we got only THIRTY days of misery (before real misery starts left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! woo hooo!

has everyone(married people and with long term significant others) submitted their leave of absence (skins season) to their significant other's yet?

i think i'll turn it in a week or two. you can't turn them in too soon since they'll be like "ohh yeah, then i'm taking rest of the sundays off"

or too late then we'll get hit with a "how the fck should i've known about when they start playing PRE-SEASON games????! you dmb fck!"

nate, saw knocked up over the weekend. it was funny. very funny. i love that dude. whatever his name is. though not a whole lot peeps were laughing but couple of westcoasters(by heart including myself)...

dealer, I am jealous of dcsween's mid-summer baby arrival. Our new little one is expected right in the heart of the schedule, right around when we host the Iggles and travel to Dallas. Only two of what should be the biggest games of the year.

So I'm going to make the most of the early-season schedule (as I hope the Skins do, as well) and rely on the blog during my post-partum blackout phase.

Re: CP - Aya article that Dealer posted.

This is so true. I have a few thoughts about this and have experinced this myself. This is my Stooory. My recruiter stooory:

I was a member of NABA (National Assoc of Black Accountants) during college. Every year we go out to a regional conference where we get interviewed by the Big 4 firms and big regional companies. I had my initial interview with PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) there. They loved me and invited me out to there Big recruitment trip.

This trip was in DC. It was 20 of us. Half of the peeps were from out of town. They put us in the Crowne Plaza on 14th & K NW for the night (Did I mention that my room was $450/night?).

So, we went out for Dinner that night at the Palm's restaurant. We had the WHOLE section to ourselves. We got to mingle with Partners and such. It was AMAZING.

That morning we went to the meeting room and they brought in Chefs that made us ommelettes and the works!

We had our interviews and I KNOW I WOWED THEM because I have charisma because I have life experinces outside of the world of Acadamia. (I consider myself a Nerd, but not a geek and 95% of everyone was a geek. No real world training.)

Also, I was the only black guy there (there were 2 black girls and everyone else was white), so I knew I had to do my best to stand out (such as showing how well rounded I was by giving examples and making the partners laugh). I had the partners laugh their GUTS out when I was telling them the story of who my accounting teacher lives next to Peter Bondra and he did his taxes and my accounting teacher would always cuss out Bondra because of certain ways he had that would add on to his tax burden. We had a great time.

Then we had lunch @ Old Ebbits Grill (I had the crab cake of course).

When I came back, the partner I was talking to the most told me that (and I qoute because I still remember this 4 years later) "If you made it this far you really don't have anything to worry about. You are basically in." I can't tell you how happy I was.

Then, one week later, I got a letter saying they weren't going to hire me and I was soooooo depressed for a long time because I knew I was smarter than any of those people.

BUT, I knew why they regected me. Guys, I made a lot of mistakes in my past. I was workingf hard to go to school. I loved college. My church helped me out, My mother helped me out and I worked as best as I could. I thought I knew how to make $$ faster and make it more plentiful where I wouldn't have to depend on my mother or my church for help. I noticed that a lot of people at school smoked the green stuff. Being from DC, I knew we had some of the best stuff compared to what was going on out there and I decided start selling it. I don't like to hype myself up, but I was reeling in the dough.

I was doing great in my classes. I was on schedule to graduate in 3 years because I was determine to move up without my mother having to work OT to help me out. I also had a job in the cafeteria as a dishwasher so I wouldn't have to be on the meal plan. I was just hustling the way I know best. I was the man in my accounting classes to the point that Seniors and juniors whose classes I was in as a freshman and sophmore were cheating off ME.

Then, someone I sold a bag to got popped and they made the guy tell him who he got it from and that led them to me. Busted. I had to withdraw from school and had to deal with the judicial system and I wasn't even 20 yet.

I was a man about mine. I took the charge and pleaded guilty to poss w/ intent to distribute and the judge gave me 5 years, but suspended 3. I got out in 10 months. During my time, I just reflecting on the lives I hurt outside of mines and vowed I when I get out that I would go back to school and do it the right way.

I got a job as security the 1st day I got out and a 2nd job @ IHOP the very next day. In 2 months, I was taking summer classes at Bowi St Univ and then starting commuting full time there in the Fall. I had 2 1/2 years worth of scool to be completed and I did it in 2.

I was still the man (for the most part) in my classes @ Bowie and knew I had the skills to make it in the business. I just couldn't take the regular route now that I am a felon. And the PWC incident was the 1st Slap that made me realize this. I took it in stride after confiding in the accounting teacher a refenced above. So, that's when I began to take the curvy road to success.

I still got black balled from job openings until this day because of this. But, I accept it and try my darndest to move on. My friends always congragulate me on my accomplisments and they tell me I need to take this to inner cities and colleges so they won't go the same path. I am the only one of my friends that ever graduated from college. I def needed to get my degree now that I was a felon otherwise, I still might not know what the internet is or how to use it. I def wouldn't have a house.

Now that I put all of this out for the 1st time to non freinds I feel much better. I hope to share this story with youths in the area very soon (before I am 30) on a reg basis to show that they can make it, even if they messed up. Its all about how determined you are.

I already was rejected because of this during my job hunting when I knew everyone was ready to hire me, but I am still confident that someone will look past what I did 7 years ago...........

"ProFootballTalk.com's Top 25 In 25

No. 19: Darrell Green.

Like Junior Seau at No. 20, cornerback Darrell Green became an NFL institution by spending so many years in the NFL that it was hard to remember when he first arrived.

In Green's case, he joined the Redskins in 1983 -- and spent 20 seasons with the same team. For a guy whose ongoing employment hinges on speed and agility, the fact that he could remain on the one squad's roster for 20 seasons is amazing. The reality that 10 of those seasons came in the free-agency era, which has resulted in many a veteran being purged from his team prematurely, boggles the mind.

Along the way, Green won two Super Bowl rings, and played a key role in the march to the team's 1987 NFL championship with a game-changing punt return against the Bears.

At a mere 5-9, Green was for years one of the fastest players in the NFL, winning on multiple occasions a made-for-TV sprinting competition with other fleet-footed football players.

Green most certainly will land in the Hall of Fame in 2008, his first year of eligibility. He deserves it, and he definitely deserves a spot among the best 25 players of the past 25 years. He might just be one of the best 25 ever.

4th - wow quite a story and thank you for sharing. I think you should definitley share it with youth if you can - I know a ton of students of mine who would benefit from stories like that. (Well former in my old school.)

Here's what kills me about the criminal justice system - if you go to jail, do your time and get out then you've paid your debt. At some point doesn't the whole reform thing have to mean something? Also how the hell does selling weed equate to a felony which means you've the same strike on paper as a murderer?

Hey keep an eye on Scooter Libby - wherever he gets hired for a gajillion dollars you should apply.

Hey guys - it appears the soap box is back.

what i was gonna say was that it's not that bad for you nate. cuz last year our second DD (that acronym is sooooooo GAY!) was born at the same time as yours will be (God willing). what i would do is volunteer for baby duty during game time and she'd just sleep (in the attached bathroom) the whole time or 90% of the time.

Thanks SFSkin!

Yeah, I wasn't no where near a big city. My original school was in the poorest County in MD (Somerset). When I was jail, I heard of various stories of people who sold or did drugs with the judges son and he flunked out of cooking school. So apparrently, he dosen't care much for people like me (back then) and threw the book at me. They charged me with a felony possesion with intent to distribute, which unfortunetly, is a felony. I could of fought it, but why? I did it. I was willing to take whatever punishment I was given and live with it...

Repaying your debt to society is bigger that what they make it seem. I could have kept writing, but I had to condense it as best as possible for all of my fellow ADD peeps out there.

Well put 4th floor;

It is interesting how the government vilifies an adolescent mistake but more violent criminals, and the white-collar business criminals can get away with it and be re-hired.

It is interesting if there was a white kid who had the same exact path and how he would have faired.

Not trying to incite anything, but there are still many prejudices in this country, as I am sure you are aware.

I'd just like to give a big hand to Venus Williams for her Wimbledon title. Way to go! First of all nice that an African American won on 50th anniversary of Althea Gibson. Second I'm glad Venus was the first to win the equal $ prize that she was so key in making happen. Third way to go as 23rd seed to come out on top in such a fashion.

Also is it fair to say Federer is sooooo great when he basically has no/zero competition?

Oh yeah I know - does anyone care? But hey it's sports right.

P.S. who let you plead to PWID on a weed case where you didn't get caught distributing?

wow! 4th. that's awesome. 4/5 years ago i used to do this thing called MIST (Minorities In Science and Technology). I did it for 2 years and loved every second of it. These studenst are mostly if not all from DC pub schools.

Yes, I know you're neither(science or tech) but please try to get yourself in there somehow. it's hosted by GWU every year. you should see the look on these kids faces. they really really WANT to KNOW and learn. i mean for them to see a black guy who isn't that old telling them/showing them how they could get to your level is just unparalleled...

JM220 - I will. But I feel like I am still trying to climb out of this. I don't mind sharing this on the street or 'On the Block'. But, I get really nervous if it gets out in anyway to where it might get to someone in my business area. This is a small world as I am realizing going to all of these job interviews. I really don't know who to trust with this kind of info.

The Truth: All of my jobs I have gotten since I have graduated have ALWAYS involved someone of Color somewhere in the hiring process that liked me for who I was as a person and was willing to look past what I did in the past. Ain't no way you can tell me that is a coincidence. I'm sorry. Because of this, I am weary.

But, like I said, I do share this with kids in the hood. I just haven't taken the next step to talk to kids in colleges and in High Schools.

I will though. Soon.

This won't be popular with soap boxers, but equal pay for equal work! Women only play best of three. A women's match can be over in 30 minutes. If you're going to pay them, at least make them hang around for a little while.

But I do agree about Federer. Borg had Connors, Sampras had Agassi, Federer has...Novak Djokovic??

Posted by: SMACK | July 9, 2007 2:06 PM | Report abuse

Also is it fair to say Federer is sooooo great when he basically has no/zero competition?

sfskin, short answer is "ABSOLUTELY!".

the long:

let me tell you from my perspective, a person who held a tennis racket once.

the kinds of angles that boy creates have never been seen EVER. i've been watching since borris becker(my favorite athlete of his time partly cuz who he was married to) won his first wimbledon. he could've been the greatest ever but of course we all know what happened to him...

this dude would SMOKE pete sampras. he has a better and more consisten more powerful serve than goran ivanisavic and light years better groundstrokes than agassi and ohh yeah...the boy can volley too. and he does it sooooo friggin effortlessly. yes, he is the best ever!

Smack - I don't even know what to say. I like the stirring of the pot though.

Women's tennis has kept tennis in general afloat for a very long time now. Bet we could all (okay sport dorks like me) name at least 10 major female players of last 15 years and maybe 5 men. If they're putting butts in the seats and eyes on the TV then you'd best pay them the same.

Posted by: sfskin | July 9, 2007 2:11 PM | Report abuse

smack, one of the shots he hit yesterday from baseline looked like he threw it with his hand...it curved. that boy bent that sucker. it looked like the ball was going out and at the last second it came back in. i didn't know you could do that with a racket.

Posted by: dealer | July 9, 2007 2:12 PM | Report abuse

I'm saying pay them equal, just make them play best of five. Is that so wrong?

Posted by: SMACK | July 9, 2007 2:13 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: SMACK | July 9, 2007 2:15 PM | Report abuse

I'm sitting here chuckling cause I'm trying to decide if the blog is currently once again demonstrating it's erudite cosmopolitan dorkiness with a side of humor and tongue in cheek?

Or have we reached a new low in talking about tennis and gender equity?

I vote with the first option. Although apologies to 4th who shared such a story and I promptly took us off into tennis land.

Federer is great no doubt. But I wish he had stronger competition that really tested his mettle. I think he probably would more often than not beat Sampras although talk about some magical Wimbledon finals those would be.

Posted by: sfskin | July 9, 2007 2:19 PM | Report abuse

Maybe the effortlessness works against Federer. Sampras was always scrapping and diving. Federer can just be like eh, why bother with this point when I can just win the next four. Is he that great, or is he playing the blind school?

Greatness should only be measured in its own era. How much better would Rod Laver have been with today's training and nutrition technology, and a graphite racket the size of Connecticut?

Posted by: Anonymous | July 9, 2007 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, that was me prolonging the dorkiness again.

Posted by: SMACK | July 9, 2007 2:29 PM | Report abuse

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i agree on 3 not being equal to 5. 3 does NOT equal 5.

yes, i give you nutritional and tech thingie arguement. but it's the angles. the angles man! you don't need power to create angles do you? (sincerely).

re: weed. i like weed. mainly because pharmas don't like weed. BUT (and this is coming from a very highstrung dude) it causes people to be too mellow. i've seen what weed can do. i guess that's where weed and alcohol differs. weed affects can't be hidden and alcohol's can be (for a long time).

SMACK, If I recall correctly, it was Federer who ended Nadal's clay court win streak. Federer just hasn't beaten him in the French Open. And not winning an open championship on a particular surface doesn't take away from one's greatness. Sampras never won the French Open either and he was the greatest until this kid Federer came along. Borg never won the Australian Open and Lindl never won at Wimbledon.

Good points, LH. But Federer allows himself to be intimidated by Nadal in Paris. When faced with adversity...an equally talented opponent, or his least favorite surface, Federer cannot grind it out. All things being equal, it's mental toughness and determination that are needed to prevail. Federer is soft, because, as sfskin said, his mettle is rarely tested. I agree that Federer is great, but calling him the best ever is premature. Sampras, Lendl, and Borg are not the best ever either.

Posted by: SMACK | July 9, 2007 3:57 PM | Report abuse

If Sampras isn't the best ever, who is? Tilden? Budge? Laver?

4th, great story, good sir.

Kinda sucks how non-violent drug offenders have a stigma carried over their lives for so long, while other folks (ahem-- Scooter Libby) get their sentences commuted with a slap on the wrist.

It makes me sick.

I would become a politician if I was convinced that I could make a difference. I think that the system is so corrupt now that I'm not sure one person could even make a difference anymore. To quote Bob Dylan: "I [can't] help but feel ashamed to live in a land where justice is a game."

Posted by: TDawg | July 9, 2007 4:09 PM | Report abuse

SMACK,
Fair is fair, nothings fair. But there is a BIG difference between 5 sets and 3 sets in the hot, hot sun.

And Nate,
There is a big difference between 5 sets on clay and 5 sets on anything else. Every point is all out war. It's not a serve contest.

Vive la differance.

Clay rulz.
Borg (Bjorn) was the Borg before the Borg was a Borg. I'd like to see him play Sampras in some alternate universe.

Posted by: Stumped | July 9, 2007 4:15 PM | Report abuse

Stumped, I hope I'm not being labeled as the chauvinist here. I think women can and should play best of five. How many times have you seen a man win the first two sets yet lose the match. Ask Hewitt or Roddick (whenever he plays anyone with a pulse).

Women should have this same opportunity. Maybe a woman can't paint the lines as well as her opponent, but is better conditioned? In my opinion, endurance should play a bigger part in women's tennis.

LH, I guess my point is that best ever discussions are fun, but even if you can reach a consensus, which is rare, it will never be anything more than speculation.

Give Federer a creaky wooden racket and put him in a pair of short shorts and Laver throttles him.

When you have athletes like the Williamses, Graf, all the ova's ivics' I think women going to 5 sets is fine. I'm assuming they only play 3 because in chauvinist land i.e. the world we live in, it was deemed too much for the ladies to go 5 rounds.

I'll tell you what if I was on the other end of a Venus 120 mph serve I think I'd lay down the racket, shake her hand and sprint off the court. Mind you my sprint is a jog for someone like Lisa or jm.

Posted by: sfskin | July 9, 2007 4:53 PM | Report abuse

It was a downright shame the way Venus was beaning that little fat girl with her serves on Saturday. She probably has bruises all over!

MV - if you mean 4 minutes and 20 seconds than you'd be about right. No one has ever accused me of being a fast runner. Couple that with the fact that I HATE running well there it is. That's why I played goalie in field hockey and lacorsse (plus I love the position) and stick almost strictly to fullback on my soccer team. When in dire straits I've played mid-field and holy shti was I sure I was gonna see the bright light at the end of the tunnel.

A guy tells a buddy he's going to hang out in San Jose (which he pronounces with a "j" sound and rhymes it with hose) for a while.
"San Jose?", replies the buddy repeating his friends incorrect pronunciation. "You mean San Jose. It's Spanish. The "J" sounds like an "H"."
The buddy then asks, "When are you coming back?"

"Hoon or Huly," replies the newly educated friend.

I have to tell you it's fascinating living on both Boys and Skins blogs. I'm going to write a book about it someday, with all of you in it, which nobody will read.

The irony is that the parallels outnumber the differences. There's talk about tennis, music video links, and the occasional fan griping about no football news in July. One difference, rather than Easy Lover, it'll be this sort of thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMLnDuzgkjo

And I'll let you in on a little secret. Skins fans are well respected by longtime Boys fans, even if the reverse cannot be said to be true. Eagles fans, not so much. Speaking of which, where the Philly is Adam? Adam, come back, join the fantasy league!

I can't imagine why on earth the crazy parents would spend money for more than 70 jerseys for a 6 year old. If he grows as quickly as my kid, he won't be able to wear any of them next year. Yikes.
