"Big Name" Coaches

There are all kind of rumors and speculation going around about the Redskins pursuing a name coach and shocking everyone with their choice. Could be. With Dan Snyder running the show you never say never.

But I spoke to people close to Bill Cowher who continue to say nothing has changed with him at all. He's not going back to coaching this year. One source said he knows the kind of money Snyder spends but "I would be very, very surprised if Bill came back."

Dick Vermeil seems to be getting a lot of traction in some fronts (though I could not see that one in a million years and the fact that Dick and associate head coach - offense, Al Saunders, are so tight would not be a big bonus for him right now). Anyway, Jason Reid spoke to Vermeil tonight: "I haven't talked to anyone over there," Vermeil said of the Redskins. "Heck, I haven't talked to Al in a week." People close to Pete Carroll report nothing has changed with him at all, he let the Falcons flirt with him but he is happy as a clam at USC and nothing is cooking with the Skins that they are aware of.

Chatted with Jim Fassel a few days ago and he had not heard from the Skins and a source close to Dennis Green said the same thing. Jimmy Johnson is getting thrown around a lot now, too, and we're looking into it but some close to him think the idea is laughable (though Jason Reid reports that Atlanta's ownership did talk to him about its opening). Johnson is on his boat 24/7 and is very much retired and no longer watching film, studying players or heavily in the know. He's a great football man, no doubt, and he loves him some Snyder money like everyone else, but it's hard to see him changing his lifestyle and throwing himself back into the game now.

Heard that Brian Billick had reached out to some members of the Redskins staff trying to find info on the coaching search and possible openings on the offensive side of the ball, but that the Redskins had not contacted him. Left messages for people at the NFL Network for Steve Mariucci; do not believe the Skins contacted him but we're trying to track more concrete info down.

Anyway, I'll post more on this stuff when we get it, but I figured some of you guys would want this info, even if in essence it's kinda non-info, info, if ya know what I mean. Let me know if there are any other "big fish" we're forgetting here, but when you look at guys like Sparano and Harbaugh getting jobs you know which way the NFL wind is blowing.
