Blaylock Update

Would have liked to have posted this earlier, but was traveling all day and my paper won't give me a Blackbery (can't even seem to get my hands on the one Howard Bryant turned in when he left the paper; shows where I rate) so I finally have email access now.

Derrick Blaylock hurt his heel in the last preseason game and was placed on IR. The Skins believe it is a minor problem - matter of weeks and not months - and they designated him for IR in a way that does not necessarily mean he is out for the season, and he could even re-sign with the Skins during certain windows ....

If of course it's not a huge problem. Blaylock went for a second opinion on his heel today and word should be in around 5 pm on the outcome of that. Either way, he's off the roster for the foreseable future, which is a blow. With Portis not 100 percent given how much time he's been out - and who knows how his knee, shoulder and hand will hold up - they liked Blaylock as a proven NFL guy behind Betts. I think Rock could be good in a pinch, but they're always going after NFL RBs - Duckett, Blaylock - so they'd be hard pressed to say they have a ton of confidence in Rock running the ball, 'cause they never give him the chance.

Anyway, re-signed Dee Brown, but that move was just to get them through this game and to have enough backs in Jacksonville, with Portis getting a few snaps, if any at all, and Betts not likely to carry more than once or twice himself. Brown was not impressive and was cut shortly after being signed. The local un-drafted rookie, Marcus Mason, has looked much better than him, be he's raw and seemed destined for practice squd duty. Maybe he'll get a shot to crack the 53, or maybe they just carry 3 RBs instead of 4, though as we've said that would buck the recent trend.

I'd be stunned if Brown was still here come final cuts Saturday. They could see who gets cuts elsewhere and add an NFL back next week as well, as there are sure to be some bodies around after this weekend's career carnage with roughly 700 dudes on the street.

Wasn't too sold on Blaylock anyway, but he would have been an excellent third option.

I've borrowed Stumped's turban for a moment... Wait, here it comes.... Portis is really injured, Portis is really injured...

I love the thought of Betts carrying against Miami, could be the new WWE 'Fumblemania".

As I said before, I hope Mason gets a shot. He was the only effective RB during the preseason, albeit it was against the 2nd-6th stringers. I am want to see how he does in a meaningful game against 1st teamers.

What does everyone think about Mason?

I would like to hear more about this magical hide-em-for-a-while IR list.

Said it before, saying it again. Skins need to re-load at RB in the first or second round.

I hear the call already, it begins as a murmur:

Kevan Barlow, Kevan Barlow....

Posted by: Redcoat | August 30, 2007 4:30 PM | Report abuse

Stop, I have been hoping they would get Mason (and/or Eubanks) in as a return guy on teams. Dee Brown's time on the field was ONE return at then end of the Steelers game. Doesn't seem like "raw" should be as much of any issue in that roster spot ... at least it wasn't for Devin Hester.

It's really weird. I thought I'd do a bit of spying on behalf of your good selves earlier today and check out the Jacksonville fan sites to see what they thought about tonight's game. I found that:

6) there are hardly any sites.
x) where there are sites, no-one posts.
&) where they do post, no-one had posted about tonight's game!

So, are all Jax fans non-computer literate, do they simply not care about this game, or are they all 'missing presumed at a bar somewhere'?

Posted by: Redcoat | August 30, 2007 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Redcoat, How inciteful...

All RB with a few years in the NFL sustain injuries of some kind or other...CP has been in the league 5 years.

Now, knowing his body won't hold up forever, he's avoiding unnecessary wear and tear. And yes he has some lingering aches and pains he can point to or use as an excuse.

Why thankyou Stumped, I resemble that remark.

I suppose I just don't understand the whole 'cload and daggar' pretence of the backstory they've concocted, it wouldn;t fool anyone in the NFL so why bother?

Why not just flat out say "he ain't playin" and leave everyone in no doubt who's in charge, in fact Gibbs could then even say "Clinton wants to play but I'm not going to let him".

I know I'm an interloper, but I'm just trying to do my bit to keep the comments flying as we run downhill towards 8x5.

"Khary Campbell is only 28..."

Lisa,

And he does fine on special teams. But who did they pick to play Middle Linebacker last year? A converted safety? Why not Campbell? Why draft 2 linebackers and sign 3 or 4 more? In fact why draft Rocky if you have a Campbell?

They were 5-11 last year. Obviously the coaches felt they could do better than Khary Campbell as backup. WHY BEG TO RETURN, AND THEN SIGN someone who is 34 and wasn't even in camp? Randall Godfrey? If you have a Campbell? I note that he has already moved up rapidly on the depth chart.

I guess they are beginning to feel like he had his chance and now its time for some new blood. The handwriting is on the wall I am thinking.

Jasno: Thanks for the insight heading into tonight's game (T-minus: 2.5 hours). I have to agree that I am beginning to side with my fellow Portlander, Stumped, that CP's injury is more serious than we are being led to believe. The team should start looking for a quality back, because while Betts is great. He certainly can't carry the entire load with our shoddy offensive line.

Everyone else: Lets start a collection to buy Jason a Blackberry (we should be able to get a used one on Ebay for a couple hundred). Then the WaPo could fit the foot the wireless/service fees.

Everyone wins.

Stop, I'm all for seeing what rookies can do, but Sartz' "interception/touchdown" last week was a gimme b/c he was in the right place at the right time. Actually, he was in the wrong place, about 2 yards behind the QB with an offensive lineman in between. Chris Wilson has a big game last week ... and Prioleau earned the #3 safety roster spot for the sack, so a few more busted plays should earn special teams spots for the hopeful.

Khary Campbell is competing, but I don't think he's got a target on his forehead as has been suggested. His competition in the depth chart is Blades, but if Jimoh made last season's roster for his special teams play, then Campbell (last season's teams tackle leader) has a great shot for a spot this season.

Portis may be lame duck in DC

After a 2006 season that ended early because of shoulder and hand injuries and a forgettable preseason, Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis admits this season may be his last with the team.

"The world forgot about me this year," he said. "I have to make it work this year or I'll be out of here and probably be doing these same interviews somewhere else."

It's not a big story. Portis is just saying what he knows to be true: the NFL is a "what have you done for me lately" situation.

OTOH, the Washington Times picks it up and tries to make a big deal out of it, in yet another attempt to sell a few newspapers. Since nothing else seems to work, might as well try to jump on a Redskins bandwagon controversy.

Who is it that always says, "Move on, people - there's nothing to see here"?
