(Disclaimer: This is not football/Redskins related, but it's my blog so I gotta follow my heart. If that turns your off, I understand, and this would be a good time to exercise your mouse).

How about the Caps? I was as skeptical as anyone about the organization finally, truly, turning the corner, but even had they missed the playoffs I was sold. They're back and should be primed for regular postseason appearances, maybe even in the range of the 1982-1998 glory days.

How pumped are you for Flyers/Caps In the playoffs? Just like the gold old days. There was definitely a time in my life when Dale Hunter's OT series winning goal over the Flyers in 1988 was my most cherished sports moment - The Caps win a 7th game in OT against the Broad Street Bullies? No way. Caps playof memories generally triggered thoughts of the Nedved goal, the John MacLean goal, the Patty La La goal and, well, let's just say there was a lot of heartbreak growing up a diehard Caps fan.

(Langway picking the top corner on Richter has to be right up there with Hunt's series winner for me in most meaningful Caps goals during my fan days (prior to covering the league). Yeah it didn't clinch the series at 3-1, but even for the choking Caps you knew that series was over. I mean, Langway, with a sick finesse goal like that after going like 14 months without scoring? Come on. You knew they would be playing in May for the first time ever).

Anyway, this should be a lot of fun. Great to see Verizon Center rocking again. (As great as Caps/Flyers is, I kinda loved the subplot had Ottawa kept the sixth seed. Bryan Murray - who led the Caps out of darkness the first time around but never gotten over the choking label, facing that franchise now as it comes out of the shadows again, this time behind Otttawa's bench?).

And Ovechkin is the MVP, hands down. Boudreau gotta get serious consideration for the Adams Trophy as well.

Also wanted to throw some luv at my man Bram Weinstein, who is moving up in the world. Bram is leaving Redskins Radio to do anchoring work at ESPN. He's a great guy with a tremendous work ethic, and it's awesome to see that rewarded. Hope he knocks 'em dead in Bristol.


And, finally, big ups to Houston and Dallas of MLS. Not sure if any of you caught their Texas derby on Telefutura yesterday (Rocco and I settled in with a bottle of milk and some biter biscuits), but it was a testament to MLS at its best (and hopefully a sign of things to come).

Yeah, it's just the first few weeks of the season, but this had a Cup feel to it. If the league had a way to bottle up this passion and atmosphere and clone it, man, it would do wonders for soccer in this country. This was a true SuperClassico, with biting tackles, non-stop energy, wundergoals, and a palpable edge to the game, like these guys wont be having beers together afterwards. Anyone who moans about soccer not being a contact sport should check the highlights.

And, it was also littered with contributions from young American players, and not just imports (let's not lose sight of that MLS, and DC United in particular). Kenny Cooper and Brian Ching were excellent in holding roles, and there were wild swings in play that would appeal to any sports fan- Houston blew a first-half lead at home, trailed late, Dallas wasted 2-3 chances to go up 4-2 and then the Dynamo it on an absolute cracker of a goal in injury time.

Well done, lads. That was an awesome display.

Thats what I am talking about!!!! CAPS....love all those memories...I have been a die hard caps fan since the early 80's. ALways a close number 2 in my heart to only the Skins....

But right now...f the skins...this siht is boring mathis, the draft...

Caps all that matter to me....and Tarik's WaPo blog is the bomb by the way!

A caps piece is so boooring. It's the worst sport to watch on television, even worse than golf. I've been to Caps games too. It's better than watching it on tee vee, but not by much. ugh!

Great Post! This Caps team is so much fun to watch and the atmosphere against the Hurricanes at the Phone Booth reminded me of some great games at the Capital Centre. I always loved to watch the decibel level graphic rise after a big Capitals goal. Can they bring that back for the playoffs? Lets Go Caps!

Anyone watching the Nationals game in HD? You can see all 15,000 people clearly. They're interviewing some CAPS (Huet and someone else) now. The guy dosen't do many interviews.

Get off it, TE. I think you're letting the Redskins control your life a little too much.

Big ups to JLa for the Caps love. I see Washington in five or six in this thing. Biron is playing well, but I think Huet is a notch above at this point. And while some pundits are talking about how physical the Flyers are, I think they forget that the Caps can mix it up a bit, too. They're one of the tougher teams in the league. Can't wait for Friday. It beats all this boring pre-training camp football stuff.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Caps. There's a blog especially for that.

But, if you really can't contain yourself, you might also want to spread your love for the Caps on the Marc Fisher blog, the NFL blog, the Wizards blogs, the Nationals blog, etc., just in case they are too obsessed with the themes of those blogs.

Janso covered the Caps, is a fan from the golden era and wanted to write a few paragraphs about it....a crime i know....

dont worry he will get back to "bashing" the skins soon enough...i hear their is a ballboy from division 1 aa that they are scouting for a 10th round pick..

or we could disect the possibilities of a Betts trade some more

I was looking really good in the PDX pool until this past weekend. If UNC had come back and won that game you better believe Billy Packer would have been crucifed for calling the game over w/7:26 left in the 1st Half!!! Any of you all hear him say that?

Jason, been following the blog from the start and really enjoy the good natured feeling (most of the time)I get when checking in. Living in Florida, I don't get much Skins info. But I really take exception to your comment about overall being uninspired by the Gibbs 2.0 Era. Granted, we didn't return to the glory days, but I think Gibbs did an amazing job of returning the team to where we respected on the field. We were about as low down as a franchise could be. So I'm sorry for your lack of inspiration. My guess is most Skins fans are thrilled to be where we are now...with 2 playoff appearances in 4 years.

Lots of siht gets talked about up here from the top down...other sports, music, tech nerd stuff, movies......

maybe on sunday at 7 in november after kickin cowboy azz it might not be appropriate...but in early April...when we have done nothing in FA and all the draft talk is empty rumors and PR posturing....well it seems about right...

but what do i know....lets talk who might be the beverage distributer this year for training camp!

Wow, good for Bram. Redskins Radio won't really be tolerable once he's gone, unfortunately. I thought Bram did a good job and it's nice to see him movin on up, fo sho.

And yeah, lets go caps! Woulda been cool to make it to one of the playoff games, but tickets are pretty pricey now. Hopefully game 1 will be shown on CSN because Cox doesn't carry Versus.

Nate, Bram has the worst voice in the market. Good beat reporter, horrible on-air personality. I just love how he criticized Snyder up and down on 980 and then took his money when he got a station. I worked with the guy; he's nicer on air than he is in person and that's saying something.

I'm not a big hockey fan (although Mrs Redcoat is) but I watched the game against Tampa last week with my old boss who is one of the minority Caps owners and the atmosphere was fantastic.

We found a quiet(!) bar in a hotel in Vegas, took it over and filled it with DC people cheering on the Caps.

Suffice to say he bought drinks for the rest of the night after the win!!

Something about this Vinny quote in the Jasons' article rubs me the wrong way:

"Instead of just adding a couple of guys this time, we need [a draft] where we're adding quantity and quality guys."

So, our USUAL approach to the draft has seen it as a chance to just add a couple of guys. But THIS time, oh boy, THIS time we need to add quantity and quality guys!

Great post! I can't tell you the last time I watched hockey, but you may have hyped me up enough to check out one of these playoff games.

And thanks for the MLS shout out. Even if you're not a soccer fan, I highly recommend a Saturday night at RFK for a United game this summer. I think you'll be surprised about the great atmosphere, fairly high quality of the game, and copious amounts of beer being consumed.

I guarantee you'll also remember how great it used to be to see the Redskins there and start cursing Fedex.

ESPN article by Sal Paolantonio, echoing my thoughts that TO is one of the most overrated WRs in the league. Anybody that lists him in the top 2 WRs in the league or in the top 10 of all-time is absolutely insane. He would hardly make my top 10 list of active WRs.

Selfishness, drops, playoff disappearing acts make T.O. overrated
By Sal Paolantonio

Some recent "best of" lists have been putting Terrell Owens in the same sentence as Jerry Rice. What are these people thinking?

Rice, a member of the NFL 75th Anniversary Team, has won three Super Bowl titles and been named a Super Bowl MVP.

The one time in Owens' 12-year career his team reached a Super Bowl, it got there without him. That tells you everything you need to know about T.O.

Since entering the NFL in 1996 with San Francisco, Owens has piled up some remarkable numbers. His 129 career receiving touchdowns trail only Rice and Cris Carter. He's ninth all time in catches (882) and 10th in yards (13,070).

And, along the way, he has destroyed two football teams.

By 2003, the 49ers had enough of his act. After joining the Eagles in 2004, it took him only a year and a half to estrange himself from the team.

With T.O., it's not about winning, it's about T.O. And that's only occasionally conducive to winning. Whether he's questioning Jeff Garcia's sexuality, blasting Donovan McNabb's Super Bowl performance or doing sit-ups for TV cameras on his front lawn, Owens generally finds himself making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Early in his career, Owens was humble, soft-spoken and respectful to his teammates and coaches -- and deferential to Rice. But as he became more and more dangerous on the field, Owens became more and more unpredictable off it.

In 2000 and 2001, he posted consecutive 1,400-yard seasons, something only Rice and Marvin Harrison have achieved. He looked every bit like a budding Hall of Famer. But he changed. And most of what he accomplished on the field began to be overshadowed by his increasingly erratic behavior off it.

"He started out as 90 percent Terrell and 10 percent T.O.," a former coach said. "A few years later, he was 90 percent T.O. and 10 percent Terrell."

Owens began criticizing his coaches, ripping his teammates and shredding team chemistry, which effectively neutralized his on-field pyrotechnics.

That's why Owens is one of the most overrated wide receivers in NFL history.

No matter how many passes he catches, no matter how many touchdowns he scores, no matter how many Pro Bowls he's selected to, he always ends up hurting his team more than he helps it.

"He's like a wild bronco," former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason said. "Every cowboy thinks he can control him, but there are some broncos that nobody can saddle."

And by the way, during his two years in Dallas, he has dropped 27 passes, according to Stats, LLC. That's more than anybody else in the league (Cleveland's Braylon Edwards is second with 20). And, sometimes, all you have to do is cover Owens to render him ineffective. Take Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard. When the Cowboys played the Eagles last season without Sheppard on Nov. 4 in Philly, Owens caught 10 balls for 174 yards with one touchdown. On Dec. 16 in Dallas, Sheppard shut down Owens, who caught only two passes for 37 yards.

Owens began his career playing alongside Rice, who didn't have to brag to convince people he was the greatest receiver of all time. The 49ers won playoff games with Rice and T.O. in 1996, 1997 and 1998, advancing to the NFC Championship Game in 1997.

But without Rice, Owens has hardly won a thing. During the past seven seasons, Owens has been in uniform for just one postseason victory. His lifetime playoff record is 4-7 -- and of those four wins, three came in the wild-card round. And in four of his past six postseason games -- the biggest games of his career -- this alleged superstar had 49 or fewer receiving yards.

His total postseason record without Rice is 1-5. Since leaving San Francisco, Owens has not won a playoff game.

The 2004 Eagles were forced to play their first two postseason games without an injured Owens and won both easily. With Owens back, they lost 24-21 to the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. Owens had a big game (9 catches for 122 yards), but instead of showing disappointment about the loss, he celebrated his performance in his postgame news conference.

"Nobody in the world gave me a chance," he crowed after the game. "God is good. God is great."

Why so happy after a loss? Because 9-for-122 matters far more to T.O. than a 24-21 loss in the Super Bowl.

Maybe that's why during the past nine years, Owens' teams have won more postseason games without him than with him.

Since joining the Cowboys, Owens is 0-2 in the postseason, with just six catches for 75 yards in two playoff games. In his past four playoff games, he has only one touchdown catch, which came last season in a loss at home to the Giants. Owens, who will be 35 in December and is going into the last year of his contract with the Cowboys, makes for a big show in Big D -- until the big games come around.

"When it comes to this game, I'm the best in the field," Owens sang in a 2006 rap single.

If being the best means ignoring your coaches, insulting your teammates, failing to produce in the playoffs and dropping more passes than anybody else in the league, he's absolutely right.

Jasno has many times mentioned up here how he came to be a fan of teams from different cities.

The only one of his allegiances that perplexes me is being from Ballmer and rooting for the Red Sawks, who play in the same division. But maybe that's like growing up in DC and rooting for the Cowboys, which as unnatural as it sounds does happen.

I tried that "volatile marinade" you posted last week. I'm not sure I'd recommend it -- it's pretty sweet with Guinness, whiskey, honey, cinnamon.

If you try it, cut the recipe in half and drink half the Guinness and half the whiskey. Me, I've got a lot left so will try it on pork, chicken next.

skinsfanman, re: this visit posts, are you keeping track of them? esp. numbers-wise. I have this recollection that teams can only have 30 guys come in for an individual visit (which is how I think they pull of the weekend long visits of local talent ... the Terps, Cavs, Hokies, etc. all come at once).

"Quality and quantity" ... not saying much there, Vin. What kind of team tries to draft for "quality"? That's just crazy talk. And what makes you think you can draft "quantity" when you ONLY have nine picks? Good thing that everything is focused on the draft now ... especially now that he's back from the owners' meeting.

[Note: the above is personally-inspired bashing having nothing to do with Jasno. Yesterday, someone made a reference to bashers of the FO and referred to them (us, me, whateves) as Jasno's lapdogs filling the dance floor. I thought, "wow, what a perfect metaphor!" what does everyone think the likelyhood is that the skins will pull a draft-day trade for chad johnson?

the bengals are enamored with mario manningham. there was speculation on the redskinswarpath that the skins (since the danny loves him some chad) could potentially trade their 1st rounder plus betts for CJ, allowing the bengals to draft manningham.

I beleive betts was thrown in because the bengals need a RB. It would also seem to "expalin" the mathis signing as we wouldnt want rock returning kickoffs if he was our primary backup RB.

I think this would be a horrible trade for a number of reasons, but its a scenario i could see happening. I mean, lets be honest - vinny has said we don't like the 21st pick and we know danny love CJ. I could definitely see the skins trying something crazy like this on draft day.

Count me as one of the grumpy people. I don't care about Jason's personal life, the Caps, or the Wizards. I've been reading the Post's Skins coverage since 1971. Now that we've got the net, the Post ought to have a kick-azz inside info blog. It doesn't. That pizzes me off; it's nothing personal against Jason. He just doesn't seem to have his heart into digging info out of Ashburn. I guess I ought to stop complaining and go look elsewhere.

Betts, and the 21 for CJ, would cause me to gouge my own eye's out, and lobotomize myself. Thats the worst trade in the world. That would hurt both teams. The bengals don't want to do that because then they have TJ, and no body else to throw to. The Redskins don't want to do that because they have more than one need, and should use ALL 9 of their picks.

JLaC has completely missed a new story that is unfolding right before us(and if he's working on it now, my apologies).

So, we signed Jerome Mathis. Eh, don't we have 3 returners already?!?!? Cartwright, Randle-El, and Betts.

Now, we have 4 returners. ARE ain't going anywhere anytime soon. Cartwright just resigned and got a little signing bonus. Betts is a backup running back who has been runored to be on the trading block before (click on scout link).

Ok, I connected more dots through another Nats lost (who says we ignore current sports), and this is what I am guessing that Vinny is hoping for:

Mason moves up to #2 or 3 on the depth Chart. They trade Ladell for at least a 3rd (or a 4th/5th next year combo) Rounder by the draft, or use him in a trade for a big WR. Mathis is used as PR and KR. Rock stays because of his ST strength. Thrash is possibly cut in a move to get younger as a team......

If we are going to make a trade this offseason or on draft day, I would rather it be for R Williams or a CB.

Betts is not only expendable, but should be given a chance to start somewhere. And Mason may be #2 (don't go there) over Rock.

NO to CJ, only because of his age.

This sounds like Vinny is serious about trading down out of the #21 slot to gain additional picks (Quantity). Then using the lower round picks to move around in rounds #2 and 3 (Quality).

Any deal involving the words "trade draft pick for CJ" sucks.

Greg, I agree, that is what Mason is now, but if given a chance I think he could earn the #2 spot. Not saying just give it to him, but I would like to see some of the younger guys given a chance. Something that Gibbs did not do.

I really like Betts, but hate to see him waste his career sitting on the bench.

4th, the problem with sticking your head in the sand regarding Mason, is that both Grant, and Bradshaw MADE THEIR TEAMS coming out of training camp. Something Mason has failed to do up to this point.

So, until he MAKES the team, and HAS a carry in a REAL NFL game, then like I said, he's not anything more than an unproven player.

I agree that T.O. is not in the top two of receivers. He is not better than the following:

1) Randy Moss
2) Marvin Harrison
3) Steve Smith
4) Chad Johnson
5) Reggie Wayne (maybe)

T.O. is good but it depends on the day. Randy Moss is great but lost a step with me because he tanked it in Oakland.

sicwidit, on WRs, I am a little amazed at how Randy Moss has rehabilitated his image. Nothing like a record-setting season to turn the ship of public opinion around.

We can all gird our loins for what will probably be a sickening display of mass amnesia when he's up for the HOF, when people slurping Moss will blame the culture of the Raiders (or whatever) to explain away those lost seasons.

My diabolical plan seems to have worked. My earlier post was intended to bait cHris lARRy back to RI and make him stop whining about the fact we've got nothing to talk about up here and have been sounding like a stuck record (he's right).

I just went through the Hampton University media guide and Jerome Mathis didn't even return punts in college. The returner when he was there was Marquay McDaniel, a rookie last year (undrafted) on Denver's practice squad.

Mathis is just not a likely candidate to return punts for the Redskins.

My analysis would depend. If it is someone that posts under another nickname in a joking manner, then I would say that person has a sense of humor. If that person goes further and tries to assume the other person's identity, then I would say we have a sick individual.

But this is Psych 101. I would not think you would need my expert opinion to understand that. Maybe I have overestimated your intellect.

If the Denver Post is correct it sounds like a lot of teams want to trade down. Not a good omen for the skins to do so. Now if they wanted to move up and grab a Derrick Harvey or Branden Albert, it sounds like the Broncos might be willing to fleece some picks from them again.

Greg - Grant was Paractice Squad Member in '05, Injured - Non Football related in '06 for the Giants. He had no REAL ROSTER experince until this year. No Carries. No Games Played. Nada. Until this past year, when this UNPROVEN RB got a shot on the 53 Man Roster. He seems in the same position as Mason does to me.....

Ahmad Bradshaw was a 7th Round draft pick last year and ending being one of the missing links for the SB run. He was an UNPROVEN RB who was given a chance and not cut.....
