Brandon Banks lines up at QB in Wildcat formation

There was a Wildcat formation sighting at Redskins Park but it took a split second longer than usual to actually see who was at quarterback. The diminutive Brandon Banks, a former Kansas State Wildcat, no less, took a couple snaps in the formation that has taken the NFL by storm since the Miami Dolphins introduced it in 2008.

The formation, which brings running threat to take the snap, is intended to give the offense the threat of rushing or passing. But don't expect the latter when the rookie Banks lines up at quarterback.

"Never," the 5-foot-7, 155-pound Banks said with a laugh when asked if he had ever thrown a ball in a game. "I ain't trying to throw no ball. I can't throw, I just run with it."

Coach Mike Shanahan said the Redskins were practicing the Wildcat in preparation for Friday's preseason opener against Buffalo, which has run the formation.

"We're going to go against a lot of different type offenses this year," Shanahan said. "Brandon went back there today and since Buffalo has run that in the past, we wanted to get a little look against our defense, and Brandon did a great job.

"Brandon's talented - returner, punt returner, kickoff returner," Shanahan added. "He's done an excellent job as a wide receiver, not even 5-foot-7, under 150 pounds. Very few guys have that type of athletic ability, so at that size, you got to have something special, and he's been fun to take a look at every day."

Tuesday morning Banks lined up in the shotgun and ran the ball out of the backfield with quarterback John Beck at wide receiver. On the second play, running back Willie Parker lined up beside him and was the lead blocker on a sweep to the left.

Banks, who said he was clocked at 4.24 seconds in the 40-yard dash while at Kansas State and ran a 4.43 at the NFL combine earlier this year, is looking to make the 53-man roster in anyway possible. A wide receiver by trade, Banks hopes his shiftiness and speed can land him a spot as a return specialist.

"Special teams is very important. In a game it [can provide] game-changing moments," Banks said. "And I think I'm a game-changing player and I like to make big plays. That's where my opportunities will come: special teams."

Banks said he expects players to fly around a little faster than he's seen when he takes the field for his first NFL action in the team's preseason opener against Buffalo on Friday night.

Much has been said about his size but Banks believes his compact frame is an advantage when returning kicks and is confident in what he brings to the table.

"There's a lot of missed tackles on the field when I got the ball in my hand," Banks said.

"I think I'm very electrifying," he added. "I'm a big playmaker and I can go the distance whenever I touch the ball."

NOBODY is thought to have a better chance than us to WIN IT ALL!

Conversely, y'all need several reverends AND their mamas to pray for y'all just for y'all to have a chance of so much as sniffing the parking area of Cowboys Stadium outside of the regular season. With that cast-off QB and no receivers to speak of, that's literally all you'll do - smell the asphalt. Jackson made McNabb look halfway decent last year. Moss is no Jackson! On that, we ALL agree.

Y'all better be glad I'm in a real good mood today or I'd rip y'all to shreds for those unkind comments you made about me on the other thread. I'm a peaceful man so I won't go there, you odoriferous, slack-jawed punks.

Alright, ladies, I've done my good deed for the day (educating the less fortunate (you Deadskins fans)). So I feel I can go back to my Cowboys Insider blog (sure does have a nice ring to it, don't it?) where I belong, and can smell the fresh air that comes with having a winning team. I can't IMAGINE how you certified idiots spend a whole day in this putrid atmosphere talkin' up a certified 4-12 team. If you were talkin' 'em down, I could understand that. To each his own.

My goodness, this DI board should come stocked with carbon-filter gas masks. P.U.!

Brian Mitchell is right about putting in work to get the most out of special teams returners. Which is why DT11 should be focused on WR, not on KR.

Alright rookie, you are giving too much information. Don't say that you will never throw the ball in a wild formation. Jason Reid, are you a skins fan? You may want to also be more creative in your reporting of the skin's practice plays. Don't just give away secrets to the opponents.

"Brandon Banks lines up at QB in Wildcat formation"

No disrepect to Mr. Banks, but the 'Cat formation works best for the dolphins as they place two stud running backs in position to get the ball: R Brown, R Williams.

They get yards out of the 'Cat as they run several types of running plays from it (counters, traps, draws, sweeps, strecth) that allow Brown-Williams to fool a defense.

It's not a gadget offense for the dolphins.

It sets up running plays that can wear the defense down and confuse it all at the same time.

My point?: Run the 'Cat with Portis-Johnson or Torain-Portis.

Otherwise, a 170 pound scatback will get pummeled as soon as he hits the line.

Did MrIrvin88 really just call Redskins fans "odiferous and slack-jawed"?

This coming from a fanbase made up of white trash bandwagoners.

A bandwagon that stretches from Texas, through Arkansas and Louisiana.

Generally reaching the darkest depths of the trailer parks and free health care clinics.

What Cowboys fans have in common:
1. GED's
2. Welfare
3. Pubic hair moustaches
4. Domestic violence
5. Winston brand cigarettes

Anyone else care to pile on?

RT Jammal Brown (hip) won't return to practice until Sunday or Monday at the earliest, coach Mike Shanahan said. Also, Brown will receive a shot Tuesday to alleviate the pain in his hip. Shanahan would not say what sort of shot.

Wildcat formation is for guys like Pat White and Micheal Vick, who can throw.

Banks can't throw because his hands aren't big enough.

He is 150 pounds, 5'7" - it's be great if he proved the world wrong but I hope this flirtation ends sooner rather than later.

As for his speed, there are others on the team with similar combine times, and claim similar school times.

The formula for caluclating a player's actual 40 time is to always add .2 to whatever he says it is.

That goes all the way back to High School.

Fair comment. Wasting time on that goat molester is just, well, just a waste of time.

Regarding Banks, love his confidence too. It's what you need in a return guy. I just hope he can walk the walk. Hell, I just hope SOMEBODY walks the walk as a returner. How long has it been since we had a decent return guy? Mitchell? Too long of a drought.

MrIrvin - it speaks volumes about you that you named yourself after an ex-con crackhead and spend the day spamming an internet board.

Here's one for you - Dallas has never beaten the Skins in the playoffs. Not to mention our recent 35-7 and 27-6 wins that ruined your season.

See Russ Grimm and the 83 championship game for an example.

Have a good day.

@Monkeymayonaise,

I'm no troll. I just state facts and move on. The Super Bowl odds have been set and they weren't set by me. The betting public knows we have the goods and y'all don't. You were dealt a bad hand and, unlike poker, you can't just fold and get a new one.

@iheartdallas,

You and I both know your characterization sounds more like the Deadskins fans(formerly the "Team of the South"). I see LOTS of missing teeth when the cameraman pans the crowd at UPS Stadium. Bless your hearts!

@go88irvin

Nice handle.

@Rypien11,

Beating the Deadskins in the playoffs is not pre-requisite since, quite frankly, y'all are almost never in the playoffs nowadays (did that one hurt?). You stink out loud and I've gotta put this gas mask back on before I damage my sense of smell.

General question: How much flour y'all think we need for Haynesgirth's buttermilk biscuit platter?

That 35-7 roasting at FedEx was beautiful. Lot of memories from that game:

* It was the game Chris Cooley became a household name -- he scored 3 TDs

* Clinton Portis was on absolute beast mode. He gained 120+ yards that day

* Will never forget the look Parcells gave Terrence Newmen after he whiffed on a Cooley tackle that resulted in a TD. Also the look on his face as he gave the "wave" to Joe Gibbs when leaving the field

* Tony Stewart was at the game -- he took a picture with Clinton Portis

* Will remember while although classy, how punkish Joe Gibbs looked while waving the PA to cut off "Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys"

* Remembered how much it sucked watching Randy Thomas go down with that broken leg

* Knew that seven though the team had to win every game they played from their on out, they'll still be in the playoffs.

Hey Red,

My biggest memories of theat 35-7 game were these:

1) My buddy [a BIG Skins fan] was in from CA and watching the game with myself and two other BIG skins fans...making it all the sweeter,

2) Grilling bacon cheddar sliders using the Foreman grill right on my bar, without having to leave sight of the TV...while Mrs. ThinkingMan kept the hot, crispy, hand-cut french fries coming from the kitchen all day long,

3) In my keeper Fantasy league...I had Cooley, Portis and Moss going by choice, and then, due to injury right before 1 PM, I'd had to put in Brunell before kickoff or it would have cost me an IR move...lol, I won the week walking away...[MJD and Willie Parker helped, too],

4) I hit the football pool for 4th quarter/final...$250.00.

...you just don't get too many days like that.
