Brandon Banks, Devin Thomas make the cut

As more names continue to leak out about players who did not crack the Redskins' 53-man roster, here is some news about the players who did.

Undrafted free agent wide receiver Brandon Banks made the final roster, a league source confirmed.

The Free Lance-Star and 106.7 The Fan originally reported that the undersized returner had made the team, proving that Banks's speed and big-play ability outweighed the risks of some of the shaky moments he had in the preseason.

Banks returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown in the Redskins' preseason opener but also fumbled three times, losing one. In the finale on Thursday against the Arizona Cardinals, Banks returned the opening kickoff 40 yards but later fumbled a punt. He recovered the fumble.

Third-year wide receiver Devin Thomas also made the roster. In a text message to a Post reporter, Thomas wrote, "I'm good."

In other cuts, Rookie G/C Erik Cook was released, according to a league source, but has also been targeted as a practice-squad candidate should he clear waivers.

Darrel Young, who originally signed with the Redskins in 2009 as a linebacker, has made the team as a fullback, according to 106.7 The Fan, which also reported that rookie safety Anderson Russell was released but could join the practice squad.

I hope hard knocks spends a lot of time in the Jets GM office today... I think that would be interesting.. not from a watch guys get cut standpoint, but to see them working the phones and watching the wire, etc etc.

Good News on Banks. He's gonna be fun to watch.

Glad to see us get some value from Tryon instead of just cutting him. Probably a 7th rounder, but that's better than a stick in the eye.

Cook and Capers to the practice squad. No surprise there. I think both of them will be solid contributers in the years to come.

...and thank god the cleared Will Robinson out of here. McNabb has got to be soooo relieved.

Have we picked up anybody yet?

Don't forget George Washington. He never went near a college and the Washington Redskins are named after him.

So anybody else think the REDSKINS should jump immediately on TJ Houshmanzadeh???

The clause in his contract that the Seahawks have to pay whatever his new team doesn't pay (of his guaranteed salary) means he can be had for a steal.

I have no doubt that the REDSKINS are talking to his agent now.

Happy to hear about Brandon Banks. I think he could be a good Reggie Bush type player; develop some plays (like the bubble screens they ran on Thursday) where he's isolated and let his speed do the rest.

Still thinking about Banks...the dude is the same size as the end-zone pylon, he fumbles every punt headed his way, and he hasn't had any catches I can remember on offense.

We need help catching passes now and Austin has run good routes and steadily improved, I just can't see that Banks is a good enough gamble to not just stick on the practice squad; nobody is going to sign him...no one drafted him.

Thomas needs to choose his words more carfully.

The Redskins reliance on over the hill veterans - combined with their lack of depth - is a recipe for the annual late season collapse. They will be lucky to win six games this year.

Posted by: observer9 | September 4, 2010 5:35 PM | Report abuse

B Mitch says that Banks can be coached to not cough up the ball. B Mitch cited Tiki Barber, who was taught by Tom Coughlin how to hold onto the ball, as a reason for optimism. B Mitch knows a little about fielding punts and holding onto the ball. He felt that Banks' upside made him worth the risk. Maybe the Skins felt that Banks was less likely than Austin to clear waivers. My question is, how can a receiver or return man compensate for small hands? Another question I have is, if Banks is fumbling now when the weather is perfect, what's going to happen when the weather gets nasty? I'm sure the Skins are working on Banks' hands. He has a kind of elusiveness that can't be taught. I just hope the B Mitch is right in his assessment.

Did the writer of the article say Austin was cut? or Williams was not? NO ....

You people need to listen what the writer said ..

then they would have a receiving core

Moss. Houshmandzadeh. Cooley. Davis.

Being around 5'7" myself, I am also proud.

Where do I write to protest the constant, unremitting, obsessive coverage of Albert Haynesworth? I am so sick of hearing about Albert Haynesworth.

Tonight I clicked to the Post site and there Albert Haynesworth is again on the front page: will they play Albert Haynesworth against Dallas?

Half the article about Thursday's game was treatise on Albert Haynesworth.

Albert Haynesworth is not the only person in the universe. Albert Haynesworth is not even the only person on the Washington Redskins.

Speed, speed, speed. Banks fumbles 4 times, and all the coaches can see is that 40 time.

I hope the guy can learn to play a little football to go with his ability to run real fast, but I'm not holding my breath. I've seen it and seen it again and they always fall for it and it almost NEVER works out.

I'm not really that happy about Banks making the team, especially if it means Austin gets cut. Or give me Roydell Williams, for that matter. A football player.

What is Banks going to do for us? Return kicks? Please. Is he gonna crack into the Receiver rotation? I doubt it. A trick play or two is all I expect from him this year. And that's with a LARGE dose of fantasy stirred in.

I get it. He's fast. There are a lot of faster guys out there who can't play football. They're on college track teams. Go slap one of them in the face with Bank's paycheck. I give any guy off the street the same chance. The guy can't handle a football and he weighs 122 lbs.

I hope. But, come on. Please.

YES! Exactly. He looks like the martian from Bugs Bunny. Aside from that, I think you're right on. Long term project. Years away. And then, MAYBE. Or, maybe not.

T Austin (bananananana...) can actually play American Football and he's not particularly slow. I just don't like it. I'll bet my nuts that Austin will contribute way more to the Redskins than Banks over the next 3 years.

I don't want to come across as a Banks hater. I was all over his jock after the TD, believe me. I'm seeing DeSean Jackson in Maroon and Black! But, come on, man. Now you start fumbling? Repeatedly? Even threw in an untouched one?

Hard to watch that. I don't care how fast you are if you can't catch the football. And some people actually cant. You can get better at it, but you can't make a "Butterfingers" sure-handed. Nope. If you are that bad, as an adult, human athlete, with X number of years under your belt... you will never be "good."

Thank you. "Preseason just 'Got To Him.' It made him so nervous."

I could easily imagine that in Michael Jackson's quivering voice.

Beating a dead horse... Banks F'king fumbles like it's the name of the game. THAT is a huge problem.

Elusiveness? You mean when he ran up the sideline after OUR scrubs made a nice wall against THEIR scrubs? He barely made a cut! He faked out the KICKER. With a running F'king start!

THEN, (not finished)...

He weighs One Hundred And Fifty Pounds. THEY SAY! THAT is what they CLAIM (see: Admit) he weighs. Darrell Green weighed 180 lbs. He was tough as nails. And he got hurt a few times. Take a way 1/6th of his weight, and give him the ball against today's monsters.

The threat of fumbling might be an involuntary defense mechanism Banks' body has worked out...

"I don't have it! Don't kill me! THERE! On the ground! QUICK! Get it! OK, now, quick! Take it to the house!"
