Brandon Banks is unlikely to play against Philadelphia Eagles

By Jason Reid

It appears doubtful that rookie return specialist Brandon Banks will play against the Philadelphia Eagles because of his ongoing rehab from knee surgery.

Although the Redskins were hopeful that Banks, who underwent surgery during the bye week, would recover in time to contribute Monday night against the Eagles at FedEx Field, "he was a little sore today," Coach Mike Shanahan said Saturday after practice at Redskins Park. "You could kind of guess that was gonna happen. ... The good part about it, there's a chance."

Banks will be a game-time decision, Shanahan said, but the team plans to proceed cautiously with the dynamic, diminutive playmaker. Banks injured his knee in the 37-25 loss to Detroit in Week 8. An MRI exam revealed a meniscus tear, and Banks then traveled to Birmingham, Ala., on Nov. 3 to meet with renowned orthopedist James Andrews, who recommended immediate surgery. The normal recovery time for the procedure is two to three weeks.

In the first eight games, Banks ranked second in the league with 234 yards on punt returns and third with a 13.8-yard average. Banks's 27.3-yard average on kickoff returns ranks seventh in the NFL.

The Redskins wasted Banks's outstanding effort in the first-half-closing loss to the Lions at Ford Field. During the team's final game before the break, Banks averaged 35.5 yards on six kickoff returns, had a 96-yard touchdown and another long potential touchdown return nullified because of a penalty.

"You always want your best players out there, but you don't want to lose 'em for the year as well," Shanahan said. "You do what you think is right long-term as well as short-term."

Nickel cornerback Phillip Buchanon, whom Banks supplanted as the primary punt returner earlier this season, probably would handle punts against the Philadelphia. Running back Chad Simpson could be the team's primary kickoff returner against the Eagles.

"We've got some good options. We've have people that have done it before, so that's always good," Shanahan said. "Usually, it's tough on a Monday night game to put somebody there that's never been back there before in a game situation, especially on a Monday night. But we do have a number of people that have done it and feel confident in doing it."

I hope they don't rush Banks and Portis back into the lineup this week. No use risking a re-injury by bringing them back too soon. I like what they can do for our team, but I want them healty enough that they can do it for the remainder of the season.

I still think that now would be a good time to bring up J. Davis and Austin from the practice squad. Cut Galloway and send K. Williams back to the practice squad. I think that J. Davis can offer more than K. Williams, who hasn't been very impressive. If we don't activate J. Davis soon, some other team is going to steal him away. he won't wait forever for his chance here if he's getting offers elsewhere. Austin can't be any less productive than Galloway at WR, plus I think he offers more at PR than Buchanon, who has been worse than Randle-El if that's possible. Give Austin a chance now and see if he has a future. Galloway has proven that he does not.

Give the RI reporters some credit. They are the absolute, undisputed champions at Re-hashing the same tired stories over and over, AND copying stories from other news sources and reporting them days later, AND writing stories that say the most obvious things. It is the Laziness Trifecta, and they are the absolute Champs! No one produces more output with less effort than the RI guys.

I never play games twice. But Call of Duty: Black Ops has made a very happy liar out of me.

As soon as I finished Black Ops the other night on my PC, I got up, walked out of my computer den, went into the living room, fired up my Xbox 360, plopped down in my big, overstuffed chair and started all over again.

The game shattered the industry’s one-day sales record when it was released on Tuesday.

JReid is the king of copy and paste. How many times does he have to repeat that the Redskins wasted Banks performance against the Liones. He must get paid by the word.

Can the Skins contain Michael Vick?? What separated the skins from being runn over last time by MV was the hard hit that nocked him out...Can the Skins CONTAIN and NEUTRALIZE Michael Vick...Previous to that inflicted injury , he was playing some of the best QB the NFL had EVER seen...Can we break his neck, or electrocute him, like he did his dawgs???...

The surgical removal of Vick's testicles? That sounds like the definition of a Black Bag Operation to me!

uggggh!! too sick...Almost as bad as the "Wizards" have been ..Seriously, after watching how bad the Bobcats are the other night, and HOW we lost to that pathetic team, seriously, the Heat are getting KILLED without a decent ball-control guard, let's move ARENAS to the Miami (he'll love it!!) in exchange for a scoring , fast-break power forward that Wall can dish off to...Or the reasonable equivalent thereof..Arenas' head is a liability to our young and growing team, the "Bullets" (who I've attended games for dating back to the Baltimore Civic Centre) need to build around John Wall , ; and a head contraption like Arenas, who could thrive in the proper environment like Miami, needs to be moved for max value, for the long-range good of the team..

I wonder how many peeps muted out the Thurs NFL game b/c they couldn't stand the announcers. I wonder if Nielson measures viewership w/o sound, i.e., viewers using their mute buttons.

No, that can't be. He used the words "GREAT fight." None of my stuff reaches that level -- it's always too one-sided. I usually write something provocative and then hunker down and ITA when these others launch into the name-calling.

GREAT fight refers to action like yours where the antagonists invite homosexual contact with each other.
