Redskins' Brandon Banks treated for injuries following stabbing incident in D.C.

By Mike Jones

UPDATED 7:43 P.M.

Washington Redskins punt-kick returner Brandon Banks suffered a stab wound to his upper left abdomen while trying to break up a fight outside The Park at Fourteenth, a District nightclub, at 3 a.m. Saturday, according to his agent and police.

The agent, James Gould, said Saturday evening that Banks remains hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery.

Banks was standing outside the Northwest Washington club when his friend, Christopher Nixon, 24, and Jason David Shorter of Lanham got into an argument that escalated to a physical fight. Gould said Banks and the club's bouncer tried to break up the fight, an account verified by security camera footage obtained during the police investigation.

The bouncer managed to get between Nixon and Shorter, but Shorter opened a folding knife and began swinging wildly, according to Gould. Nixon sustained multiple cuts to the face and body, required surgery and is in intensive care at a different D.C. area hospital than Banks.

The 5-foot-7, 151-pound Banks, who just completed his first NFL season out of Kansas State, sustained a slash to his side, which Gould described as "more of a superficial wound." He was taken to the hospital and received stitches. Gould contradicted earlier reports that Banks had been released from the hospital, but said he expected Banks to be released within the next 24 hours.

"He is with his parents right now, and is expected to make a full recovery," Gould said in a phone interview. "He was trying to save his boyhood friend, and is very concerned about him right now. Brandon is very upset."

The Redskins released a statement in which Gould said: "Brandon was not involved in any wrongdoing and was not implicated in any way. Brandon's immediate concern is for his lifelong friend who is like a brother to him. He would like to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes for him and his lifelong friend."

Shorter is in custody and was initially charged by D.C. police with assault with the intent to kill. But the U.S. Attorney's office will charge him with a lesser charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Staff writer Paul Duggan contributed to this report.

Holy crap! Get well soon, BB. Hope his friend recovers soon.

I don't get the whole nightclub scene. Seems like a good way to get stabbed or shot.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have their third quarterbacks coach in less than a month. The Jaguars hired Cincinnati's Mike Sheppard to replace Todd Monken, who returned to college football earlier this week as Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator.

You're in your 20s, you want to go out, but there are too many thugs around looking for a fight or some quick money and few police and lots of dead spots where there's no cameras and no one around that tend to be between every club and whereever you're supposed to park.

Best wishes for a full recovery. The Park is a very decent club with lots of security. I hope that the city doesn't overreact and shut it down like it does every other club that didn't pay patronage to Fenty. Maybe Gray will use better judgment. As for being out at 3 am, that's when the club closes. Most times, its best to leave before people start gathering outside.

yeah, andre blatch really learned after he gets shot at the wee hours in am in alex. he then gets in a fight at the same hours in a club, with his team mate....you can take the boy out of the hood but you can't take the hood out of the boy. if these things and places are important to you for the wrong reasons or not, they will always be important to you. doesn't matter who you play for or how much money you make...keepin it real guys, way to go!!!

and yes, when i was in my 20's, i hit the bars and clubs too, but trouble was never too far away so like someone said, including my grandmother....nothing good happens after 12...lots of haters, users and wannabe's out there that are envious of what others are and have and want to bring them down....wild west was probrably safer!

wow, a dude in his early 20s was out at a club having a good time.

how dare he!

Seriously, why is it so wrong for a 20-something year old dude to go out and enjoy his years of virility, bachelorhood, and youth? This isn't during the season.

Depending on how exactly this went down, Mr. Banks may want to re-consider how he carries himself when out late and being surrounded by people who likely have high amounts of adrenaline, alcohol, and other substances in their systems. I'm glad he's not seriously hurt, and I hope the other person recovers well.

But if this dude's out there enjoying the fruits of his hard work on the football field--so long as he is not acting in a way detrimental to the organisation--who are we to object?

Stay safer next time, Mr. Banks. Otherwise, I have trouble imagining how the Redskins will be able to move the ball forward next season...

Posted by: j762 | February 12, 2011 5:43 PM | Report abuse

Not for nothing, but you would think these guys would learn that nothing good ever happens at a club at closing time. It's easy, just leave at 1. For the most part unless you are the thug yourself, things don't get out of hand until late. You can go out, have a good time but just leave before things get out of hand.

The law isn't paying attention yet and you slip out without anyone knowing and go get something to eat or go home, or to someones home anyway.

There is definitely security cameras outside a Mark Barnes nightclub. ABRA will probably shut The Park down for the 3 day period and slap him on the wrist. I don't begrudge a grown man for going out and sowing his wild oats, I'm just surprised he wasn't with security. Most of those guys roll with someone to keep people away from them. But it won't be the same as in the past because everything is uncertain at this point with CBA expired and management and labor at each other's throats. There won't be any orderly schedule for things like FA where in the past a timeline existed so that rampant speculation and PFT rumor mongering could build to a suspenseful climax. Puts it into pathetic perspective rooting for two such players wearing our once favorite logo. And then throw in a litigous owner suing the fans and the media.

Stop supporting this ownership and find another NFL team to root for until Snyder is gone. Otherwise, you're wasting your time caring about a team and ownership that doesnt give a S-t about you, the fan.

Brandon Banks's surgery has provided mixed returns
By Rick Maese

During the Redskins' bye week, Brandon Banks, the team's top punt and kick returner, had surgery on his knee. His performance since that surgery has been inconsistent, and the statistics seem to bear that out. But Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan says it's difficult to draw a direct correlation.

Banks' kick return numbers haven't changed signficantly. He was averaging 27.3 yards per kick return before the surgery and 24.3 in the six games since. But on punt returns, Banks was averaging 13.8 yards before the bye week and is averaging just 7.8 since. His longest returns of the season were all before the surgery: a 96-yard kickoff return and punt returns of 53, 35 and 30 yards.

Hopefully this is the first step towards his gaining some insight on what are good things to do, and filtering out situations that can lead to bad things.

1. I was flipping around on sites and happened to read about the Banks incident on Redskins.com first before I saw it here on RI and want to give props to Mike Jones for the MUCH better detail. Exactly what I want to know. Thanks!

2. Props to Banks. It sounds like he may be a hero. His friend was pretty hurt and the tapes show BB helping to break it up. He took the knifing trying to help his bud. Hope they're both ok. Note: just because he's in a club shouldn't label him. He's young, presumably single, has money, and doesn't have to show up at work the next day. No families, no wives--everybody wants to be a celebrity; these guys want to be down in the thug life. Once, as long as they were on the team's payroll, they had ethics clauses in contracts and were to be exemplary citizens of their communities; how can you take some glossy PSA seriously when it's presented by a hypocrite? The more often you leave clubs at 3:00 a.m., the more likely you are to get in a bad situation. Even if the fight isn't your fault, being there is.

Why do you have to leave before the club closes. Most of the time, people aren't getting to the club until 11 or midnight. Spending three hours out with your friend socializing and having a couple of drinks doesn't make BB the bad guy. The bad guy is the drunk a-hole that stabbed BB and his friend. WTF.

...what happened to the high standards that pro athletes used to represent?

Which athletes from the past are you referencing?:

Joe Namath

Paul Hornung

Mercury Morris

Mickey Mantle

Babe Ruth

OJ Simpson

That short list doesn't include the guys we don't know anything about from a time (20s-30s-40s-50s) when the media didn't present any unflattering stories about atheletes and celebrities.

And for this witty response, you will receive an XXXL "Mayor Reid" t-shirt emblazoned with his grinning graying gravitas Uncle Phil mug centering right over where your beer belly should be.

And if you don't have one, spend some time earning one.

I suggest you start with the beer, beens, chicken, and rice.

I did.

Obviously you don't HAVE to leave before the club closes, although it might occur to you that it would be a really, really good idea for a guy who squeaked into the NFL last season not to be there when the fights start...

Like they say, it's a free country, and often free of good judgment.

Pro athletes behaving badly is nothing new, but the stakes are a lot higher than they used to be. There are just more leeches and troublemakers looking to cash in.

I'm not saying BB did anything bad (we don't know what he was up to), but just being out at that hour makes you a target as a celeb athlete. From the moment he walked in, how many minutes do you think it took for someone to point out that "Hey, isn't that Brandon Banks of the Skins?"

Seriously, why is it so wrong for a 20-something year old dude to go out and enjoy his years of virility, bachelorhood, and youth? This isn't during the season.

===========
Nothing wrong with that, other than his choice of venue and companions. Whether is during the season or off does not matter. Maybe the NFL or the Skins should provide help to these young people with the perils that new money brings - most of these guys didn't learn a thing in college.

True, but football players are not quite as recognizable as other athletes.

We keep up with the team more than the average Skins fan and I might not recognize Banks if I saw him out.

I would recognize Moss, Portis, Cooley, Hall, Orakpo, Fletch so on.

But would you recognize Armstrong, Perry Riley, Reed Doughty, Lich and so on?

Maybe, maybe not.

That's like waiting for a Scientologist to do a standup hunk about Tom Cruise.

But the reason so many Dems do "dumb guy" political jokes about the GOP is, by God, you guys have presented a target rich environment. Very glad Banks is okay. I want to emphasize to all the individuals wanting him cut that he did nothing wrong! The double standard for athletes simply has to go. A young man spent a night out with a friend in which that friend got into an altercation. Any good friend would jump in to defend. I don't understand, however, why the charges were expected to be lessened?
