Redskins add Brandon Banks to roster, release Keiland Williams

The Redskins have added rookie wide receiver Brandon Banks back to their 53-man roster. To make room, they've released running back Keiland Williams.

The move is somewhat surprising, as the Redskins are left with only three running backs on the active roster for Sunday's game at Philadelphia: Clinton Portis, Ryan Torain and Chad Simpson.

Williams was an undrafted rookie out of Louisiana State. He had been used primarily on third downs and though he'd yet to have a carry, Williams had 29 yards on six catches.

Banks began the season on the active roster, impressing coaches with his speed and his return abilities during the preseason. But he was waived the day before the team's game at St. Louis and was then added to the practice squad after the game.

If he clears waivers, Williams will now hope the team brings him back, as well.

The Redskins will have six wide receivers available for the game against the Eagles: Banks, Santana Moss, Joey Galloway, Anthony Armstrong, Roydell Williams and Devin Thomas. Armstrong missed last week's game with a groin injury.

It would seem the most obvious spot for Banks to contribute Sunday would be on special teams. Cornerback Phillip Buchanon has been returning punts for the first three games, but he has only one yard on two returns (he also has two fair catches).

Working with the scout team, Banks was charged with mimicking Eagles' quarterback Michael Vick in practice last week.

I think that there is a big spinning wheel in Shanahan's office with the names of all the marginal players. Just for fun, every week he makes one spin to take one off and another to add one back.

Anticipation is a B$$CH!! I have McNabb, Cooley and DT11 on my fantasy team (Yes I am a Homer!!). Banks being activated makes me itchy to play DT11....It's Nerve Racking enough waiting for kick off now this!!! Who thinks he will see more action than just kickoffs??? Hail!!

What he's really hoping is that he doesn't clear waivers. He's hoping that New England will claim him.

As for "the most obvious spot for Banks to contribute Sunday would be on special teams" that seems like a reach. I think the most obvious spot is the position he's specialized in: GAME DAY INACTIVE. We've got enough troubles playing the Eagles without handing them a fumble.

This makes no sense. We have no running game, so let's cut the only set of young legs in the backfield and bring back our midget speedster. Maybe Banks is going to play D and shadow Vick all day? :-)

Ryan Torain 24
Chad Simpson 25

How is Williams "the only set of young legs"?

If Buchanon is going to muff a punt like he did against STL, might as well put Banks back there instead. Antwaan Randle El has returned a punt for a TD more recently than Phillip Buchanon has.

My. My. What in the hell are you thinking? I can only hope you are in a 20 team fantasy league.

#1 fantasy rule is don't draft players from your favorite team!! The more of a fan you are the less objective you become!

Banks handling returns is surely gonna give Philly a fresh set of downs inside the 20 at least once in this game.

I predicted Philly by 14.....Lets go ahead and bump that to 21.

So have the majority of this team including the offensive and defensive coordinators. Should they be canned too?

Get used to this.

When you have roster issues, you do everything you can to fix them.

Again, 1st pick in the draft in April for the Skins WILL be a RB. Maybe even the second. :P

I have been blaming the players for most of the week. They have played terribly for years now. A lot of these players are the one thing that have stayed the same. Luckily this past offseason we discarded a few...let's hope that continues this next offseason.

We only dropped Williams because Torain is unstoppable when healthy and we don't need other backs. Here's a link to a popular fantasy football site and a funny thread on Ryan Torain:

Torain has been pumped up to legendary fantasy status at this point, all he has to do is stay healthy and get in the game. He should have made the team in the first place. Obvious to me from watching the preseason games.

Anyone notice a trend here? Last week Shanny released Brandon Banks, on Saturday, only to bring him back after passing waivers. This week he releases Williams and plans to bring him back. Shanny is being smart here. Normally GM's and HC's sign released players between Monday-Weds. Shanny is cutting his guys on Saturday, when HC's and GM's are not really scouting the released players b/c they are focused on their upcoming game...

who can remember anything exciting about the punt returning game in the last 3 weeks ? How many people remember what it was like last year with ARE ? Did you enjoy watching Banks in preseason, was he exciting? F'n right, I need excitemnet when I watch the game, I want to know the man can take it to the House, not sit back there and catch ! risk versus reward. entertain me baby !

Interesting move. I saw them using Keiland Williams as the third down back and now that they've said Portis will be doing that, it's not a stretch to see them cut KW. He'll be back on the developmental roster this week, so we haven't seen the last of him. We haven't seen Chad Simpson play but it seems like he has a home. I'm wondering if he was signed for something other than special teams. The guy has speed and might fit well with the cutback style of running the ball...

Coaches and GMs have staff to read the waiver wire 7 days a week. That's their job. No one claimed Banks because no one wanted him on their team. No one will claim Williams for the same reason. Try cutting Orakpo on a Saturday and see what happens.

Looks to me, Banks did such a good job being "Vick" in practice, that no defenders could stop him. How do you then justify not putting him on the active roster?
Then again, this Skins D couldn't stop my grandma from having a field day on them.
My prediction is that Vick will have a field day tomorrow with 100 yards rushing (2 TDs running), 400 yards passing (4 TDs passing). Final score 42-20 Eagles

Ryan Torain did not make the original roster.
Neither did Brandon Banks
Good grief, Banks was not even in the game plan for this week, as he was the scout team QB!!!!
Now Banks is on the roster, and Keiland Williams who beat out Torain is gone?

Shanahan is already making abrupt moves.

If it was Zorn, we'd be saying "The HC is in over his head!!"

Shanny doesn't draft running backs in the 1st round. He has said in an interview before, that running back is not a position were you have to sign a big name player. If we have a shot to pick a big, speedy reciever in next years draft, thats who we will pick. If not, its going to be a Nose Tackle.

No chance. Possibly in the 2nd, but that's not Shanny's M.O. I'm guessing they will be picking any where from 8-15 and have a laundry list of needs. NT, OLB, 3-4 DE, WR, C, OG, RB...

1st Ryan Kerrigan, DE/OLB, Purdue...Brandon Graham clone

2nd Jerrell Powe, NT, Ole Miss...Vince Wolfork clone

signed Mike Oxbig

Shanahan spends way too much time tinkering with the roster at the margins, and not enough focusing on the guys who will play. Competition is a healthy thing but at some point the roster and rotations should stabilize. With the exception of McNabb, there may not be any position where any player knows what will happen Sunday. SHanahan certainly appears to enjoy messing with the confidence of his players. To what end remains a mystery. That usually ends with a team of players scared of making mistakes instead of playng to win.

This is what happened in Denver post-Elway. Good game coach, lousy roster manager, mediocre records. Although at this point we can only hope to someday achieve mediocrity.

That's right 'Skins fans, we've gone from a good [about ten] defense to dead last in yards yielded!

Agreed.

The Shanahans have a system on both sides of the ball that they are auditioning players for.

They are re-building on the fly.

Today, however, that fly might get stuck on the wall.

Didn't say it was the game plan, just that I think he'll rise up and carry us. This dude wants this game bad, no matter how nice he talks to the media.

Oh, and F Vick.

This is exactly the backwards mindset that keeps Devin Thomas out of the game.

Everyday is game day. You play like you practice. If you can't bring it in the weekday, you don't have it when the lights go on.

After last week we need this win.

Shanahan needs to stop this stubborn BS an put the best players on the field. Banks although unproven has SPEED, he can make things happen just as Devin Thomas can. I am not at practice but Devin Thomas has size , power, an speed put him on the field...Phillip Buchanon has averaged 1 yard as a punt returner, enough said!!!!!!! Kick the Beagles a%z!!!!!!!!!!

Morning folks. Another gameday.

I got a feelin', a feelin' deep inside oh yeah. I've got a hunch that we're going to pull this off. It's going to be torturous to watch (hopefully because it's close), but something tells me the Redskins are going to get the upset.

Yes, I'm crazy.

3.Albert Haynesworth starting, and on the field more, are you really trying to tell me Golston, Kemo, or any of the other DL's you play, can dominate like Haynesworth when he goes full blast?

I'm on the side of the fence where I'd like to believe Shanford and son knows the importance of divisional games and that all this shuffling is him unveiling something he didn't want Philly to see before today. maybe I'm kooky but his credentials tell me smoke screens and keeping cards clse to vest is more of his norm than finding himself still evaluating this far into the season. just sayin

what makes anyone think shanahan isn't fielding the best players ? oh I forgot, fans who don't attend practice know more about fielding players than the coaching staff does.

So what has Big Ben been up to during his 4 game suspension?

-Visited the Sunrise Retirement Center, where he put in some charity work and occasionally fingered one of the nurses

-Worked with NFL-appointed sensitivity coach Judith Barnes; Roethlisberger practiced, for only an hour at first, and eventually for four hours, not raping her

Hessone,

This is what a lot of people in the DC area do not get or want to accept.

The Redskins ARE putting thier best players on the field. It's going to take a couple years for this roster to be revamped to where the Redskins can compete with the elite teams.

The Redskins are not more talented then the Rams, but people do not want to accept that. Vinny Cerrato killed this team and now it's up to Shanny and Allen to fix his mistakes...which I have also heard on many TV networks.

People are just going to have to be patient. Watch and enjoy the games, and hope they win. But this team ain't getting anywhere near the Super Bowl, and I am pressed to see them make the playoffs.

I think they can beat Philly today for one reason: it's a divisional game. But if they lose then they weren't supposed to right?

The way the Skins have handled the RB situation certainly doesn't create a lot of confidence that things have changed for the better. They bring in Larry Johnson and Willie Parker, both now gone. They cut Ryan Torrain, now he's the #1 back. They cut Banks to make room for Williams, now Williams is gone and Banks is back. What the he** are they doing?

Posted by: randysbailin | October 3, 2010 10:05 AM | Report abuse

Ya'll stop your whining.

If Shanny hadn't done anything, he'd be ripped. Since HE is the guy who sees these yutzes in practice, he better knows than YOU DO.

If you wanted stability, you should have lobbied to keep Zorn.

This mess didn't just happen overnight - and it sure as hell won't be solved this season.

As for Carlos - if he prevents someone from catching the ball, isn't that his job? If you want him to catch the ball, he should be a wide receiver.

Coach is gaming the 53 man roster rule. Release, re-sign, re-shuffle, depending on what you need week to week.

I don't the get the whole Vick debate. Like most things these days it's become an either/or thing. Either he's the worst person on earth or he's been unfairly vilified. Why can't he complete POS who has also been overly vilified? Personally, I think the guy deserves a second chance. (Though I bet this is really a 4th or 5th chance.) What he did was heinous but many who have done worse are free to prosper. So I give Mike Vick that. But that doesn't mean I like him or think he's a good guy or want to see him do well. The whole idea of of you're either a fan or a hater is BS. I just don't care. Hell, I don't even care much about the ones I do like. The fascination, love or hate, some so called "grownups" have with professional athletes they've never met is downright pathetic.

The dude abides (cosign). MS is tweaking the 50-53 man part of the roster essentially playing with a 55 man roster from week to week. I root against Vick because he financed and operated a dog fighting ring and because he's an Eagle. That's it, no problem with him getting multiple chances.

As for the Devin Thomas fan club. Find a new guy, I recommend Chris Wilson. He's better fit for a 3-4 OLB than AC...Start banging that drum..

Diesel, right on about Chris Wilson (or Lo Alexander). I like Andre Carter but he looks like Frankenstein in this defense.

so you cut the young guy who beat out willie parker and larry johnson and who was your 3rd down back and kick returner for the 1st 3 games... wtf!!!

It should be obvious by now that Shanny has little respect or loyalty toward running backs or end of the roster players. This releasing and re-signing thing is going to continue through the year.

As for those of you who say that Shanny must know what he's doing keeping DT off the field, please. How could DT possibly give us any less than Williams and Galloway? Who cares about crisp routes if you can't get open? Just let DT run some slants and bubble screens, fcol!

Posted by: NYPDee | October 3, 2010 11:28 AM | Report abuse

I think I understand. I like the RB field (from what we have to choose from). Simpson is the transition guy to Torain - who is obviously the future, but not "there yet".

I'd bet DT sees some action catching passes this week. Banks my return kicks on special teams. I think the coaches wanted that option to move Thomas into the WR fold.

If not, then Banks can add to the speed they'll need for breakaway offensive plays. Burn the Eagles on the blitz with quick passes to speedy receivers.

Shanny and crew are tweaking this offense. I'm not sure they know what they are doing but I like that they are continually changing until they find what works. The stagnant days of Zorn were mind numbing. It didn't work last week, but he'd try it again this week. Insanity definition?

Was kinda hoping we'd give Williams more of a shot; hope that Banks gets some touches today, glad to see him back on the roster.

He wants to give everyone a chance to be a game day inactive. Last week, Chad Simpson. This week, Brendan Banks. These moves amount to 2/5's of f*ck all.

I tried to say basically the same thing last week. He paid his due and deserves to move past that. Then, having said that, I think he's a giant d0uche that has no brains. So while I'm not harping on what he already did his time for, as a person I think I would be okay if he melted in to the depths of skid row. Of course with that speed that probably won't happen.

The key to getting through each redskin sunday is to "EXPECT NOTHING". If Shanahan continues to play galloway/williams more than DT. If Shanny fails to start Haynesworth, if shanny continues to refuse to give speedy Banks a chance.....EXPECT NOTHING. I'll be surprised if they win but not surprised if they lose..."EXPECT NOTHING"....I won't bother addressing the defense....
