Ryan Torain to replace Brandon Banks on roster

Two days before their Week 3 game against the St. Louis Rams, the Redskins plan to shuffle their roster, releasing receiver Brandon Banks and activating running back Ryan Torain from the practice squad, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.

The move is not expected to be made official until Saturday, before the team plane leaves for St. Louis, though players were apparently notified on Friday.

Banks's agent James Gould, would not comment about the expected move, but did comment on Banks's situation in Washington.

"I believe that Brandon has found a home with the Washington Redskins," he said. "They stepped up and gave him an opportunity when no one else would. Fans and management see what Brandon is about and that he can help the team. We are optimistic about the long-term."

As teams juggle their rosters from week to week, they often add players to their roster that they'd previously cut. Coaches like the speedy receiver, and Banks would be a prime candidate to re-join the Redskins' roster in the near future.

Torain, meanwhile, gives the Redskins' some much needed backfield depth. After releasing Larry Johnson on Tuesday, the Redskins had only Keiland Williams, an undrafted rookie, and Chad Simpson, a free agent who was picked up Tuesday, playing behind Clinton Portis. Simpson practiced all week with the team, but Torain has more experience with the Redskins' scheme.

A 2008 fifth-round draft pick by Mike Shanahan in Denver, Torain was signed to the practice squad shortly after he was released earlier this month. He sat out all of last season and has just two career games under his belt. Torain has 69 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for the Broncos in 2008, before a torn ACL ended his 2008 season early.

Denver released him midway through the Broncos' training camp in August 2009, and he signed with Washington as a free agent in April.

Banks, an undrafted rookie out of Kansas State, was not active for either of the team's first two regular season games. Banks raised eyebrows early with a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown in the preseason opener against the Bills. He remained on the bubble throughout preseason, though, fumbling the ball three times. As a receiver, the 5-foot-7 Banks had 129 yards on eight receptions in the preseason.

The team could try to add Banks to the 53-man roster later. He would also be eligible to join some team's practice squad. The Redskins already have one receiver -- rookie Terrence Austin -- on their practice squad.

Sucks for Banks. Hope he doesn't get picked up by some other team and turn into Sproles 2.0.

Maybe he can hit the gym, bulk up another 20-25 pounds, and come back next year.

What's the point? They won't ever have more than 3 RB's active on gameday. Unless they give Chad Simpson one carry on Sunday and cut him Monday. Which seems to be the standard around Ashburn.

DALLAS SUCKS!!!

I hate the Cowboys! A great weekend is Washington beating the Lambs, and the Texans beating the Cowboys. 2 down in the loss column biatches!

Somehow, I don't think Mike Shanahan is the kind of coach that loses games to teams like the Rams. If the Redskins do lose, I predict the resulting attitude at Redskins Park will NOT BE MEDIUM. I doubt it's medium now. This is a big game for the Skins: if they're going to have any hope of finishing over .500, they really need this one.

F DALLAS!

Man, what gnashing of teeth about a minor roster move.

They needed a roster spot for Torain. Shanahan probably doesn't have much confidence in Williams' ability to pick up the pass protection scheme, and he wanted a guy he could trust. I predict if Portis does not get it going in the first half, we're going to see Torain in for a few series in the second half.

What excites me about McNabb is the Redskins FINALLY have a big-play offense.

The Texans dared the Skins to throw, bringing 8 in the box when the Skins went with 2 WR. They also played their FS over the tight ends, and guaranteed single coverage on the outside guy. McNabb made them pay big time.

Will be very interested to see if the Rams do the same thing, or if they give a more conventional look which could open up the running game.

Can't wait!

Banks will be missed but we needed to bring Torain back. Who is the backup now? I assume this move means Simpson wasn't inspiring confidence this week. Wimbley looks pretty good, but I don't see much difference between him and Torain. I actually was surprised we cut Torain after he looked to be the best back in the preseason games to me. Portis has 3 yrds per carry and is questionable for this game. Not all his fault, but somebody else could be in there soon knowing Shan.

So who do i pick up in fantasy football? Wimbley or Torain? Or does it not matter because Portis will continue to get most of the touches all year? Anybody know what they're up to?

Unless they use him for KR. Which would still be a waste IMO. Devin Thomas seems to be doing fine.

One rumor behind the Simpson pick is they would place Simpson as KR to bring DT into the WR fray more. What's wrong with having him return kicks AND play WR? There are players that do that ALL the time!

HAYNESWORTH OUT AGAIN SUNDAY

ASHBURN, VA -- The agent for disgruntled Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth says his client will again be declared inactive for this weekend's game against the St. Louis Rams.

At issue is a clause in the player's contract that limits Haynesworth to no more than two days of work in any given week during the regular season.

"Since my client practiced on Wednesday and Thursday, he has already met his commitment for this week," said the agent, Chad Speck.

He added, "It's unfortunate that the Redskins coaching staff felt they needed to work Mr. Haynesworth for two days during the week, when my client was so looking forward to getting it on against the Rams. But as you know, a deal's a deal -- and we really can't exceed the two-day limit."

To recap Haynesworth's season thus far:

- Following limited action in the regular season opener against Dallas on Sept. 12, Haynesworth was declared inactive for last weekend's game against Houston.

- While Hayenesworth only practiced for one day in the week leading up to the Houston game, he allegedly tweaked an ankle during the Wednesday session, while working his renowned “Tinkerbell spin” move against Redskins offensive lineman Trent Williams.

- Williams also bruised a knee in the same play, but was still able to dress out and play three quarters against Houston.

- Meanwhile, Haynesworth was a no show for last Sunday afternoon’s game at FEDEX Field, deciding to visit the nearby Six Flags amusement park instead.

Good Lawd....

All this clamouring over Brandon "Fumbles" Banks reminds me over the calls for the return of Leigh Torrance and Jason "Better use a fork instead of a spoon" Campbell.

Banks had a limited opportunity anyway. He as a fringe player who was going to remain a fringe player. His value was mainly on returns and it is obvious that Number 11 can handle that with ease.

Whether the two recent additions will add anything is anyone's guess. But I wish you "this team is so old" shouters would just shove your notions up your arse. Give this coaching staff some damned room! They can't solve ALL of this team's problems is ONE FREAKING SEASON! The fact that they have fielded a team that actually is respectable right now after two games is remarkable after seeing the past two years of half-stepping, off-sides jumping blivetheads!

Just because the Redskins are the oldest team in the NFL (a creaky 28.02 average age), doesn't mean they won't be successful.

The New Orleans Saints were the 2nd oldest team in the NFL in 2009.

Why Banks was ever put on the 53-roster is still a head scratcher to me. He has value at doing one thing: returning punts/kicks.

And yet they were already determined to use other guys to do just that. Whateves.

Promoting Torain to the 53 makes sense. Shanny knows that the running game can't falter for much longer and Portis has alot less left in the tank than he thought. It's not just about the blocking, it's about getting a back that actually has some explosiveness left in his body.

CP is on the clock - only a matter of time before we see him relegated to 3rd down back for blocking purposes.

Banks looks like a third grader playing with a group of sixth graders, he fumbles, and has made one play in preseason against back-ups,and was passed-up by every team in the NFL as a rookie. Just go re-join the "cult of Colt" stupid, and keep your sub-moronic opinions to yourself.

What's the point? They won't ever have more than 3 RB's active on gameday. Unless they give Chad Simpson one carry on Sunday and cut him Monday. Which seems to be the standard around Ashburn.

Beepster, I hope you are wrong. Torain reminds me of Betts... Just not as good. Portis is one good headbutt from missing games, and Kieland has a crazy name. By the way, when do we play the Kieland Browns?

Simpson looked good at RB against our D in preseason. Running "schemes" aren't so hard to pick up. It's not like remembering routes and adjustments. I would much rather see OchoSimpson than Toerain.

BUT, since you are the top secret personnel guru, I guess the gig is up. If Chad OchoSimpson gets any carries at RB, ever, you owe me a Zillion Dollars. So there. You better hope they don't play him on O, buddy. seriously. for real dough.

Banks will be signed to the developmental roster this week. I don't think they have any intention of letting him go to another team. I wouldn't be worried if the team continued to kick the tires on some players out there that could potentially help them. This is precisely what Vinny didn't do until he had to make a panic move. Don't worry. This is what teams do that haven't had the benefit of years of strong drafts and free agency. The sad fact is, the gap between the talent on our roster, and what is on the street isn't so great.

Maybe yes and maybe no. The man was a disaster in the pre-season with fumbles. They probably hoped they could teach him to hold onto the ball. And, after three weeks, they may have concluded that they can't. If they sign him to the developmental squad -- which was where he belonged -- then they still have hope.

I get you. I guess they thought he was closer to developing a better "grasp" on things than he actually was, and that is why he was on the active roter from the start. I was never sold on his size in the NFL, but after seeing him run the ball in pre-season I realized he has unique speed. I think he's worth the waste of a developmental roster spot to keep around.

My point is that when you make head-scratching additions to the 53, and then cut them 2 weeks later; there's something a little schizo going on.

The LJ/CP thing is sort of collapsing on Shanny here. This gambit to go with veteran retread backs is not panning out. I don;t know what he thought he saw in OTAs/training camp out of these guys, but they are a pretty horrible fit for this offense right now.

The Banks thing didn;t make sense. He has value for doing one thing and one thing only - return. But they weren't going to let him do that. Explain why he got a roster spot then?

Yeah, bottom-of-the-roster personnel changes are sure signs of a schizo, dysfunctional organization. Only reason to drop a guy after you sign him is if he goes on IR.

Agree. It's not fun watching Carter out there playing linebacker. Anything within a five yard perimeter and he is great, but outside of that the speed just isn't there. He's got burst but no range. I'm still looking for Haynesworth to make some impact plays. It's kind of a catch-22: if he plays well, then he's trade worthy, but if he plays well, it makes sense to keep him because the front three really haven't made much noise thus far. I'd like to see the team do without his nonsense but I just can't see them moving him this year.

Bottom of the roster? Our #2 running back is bottom of the roster? Not sure what depth chart you are working from.

Banks? They gave a spot to a guy who is only useful for one thing; but they did not intend to let him do that one thing. Being at the "bottom of the roster" doesn't make that decision any less mystifying.

I'm glad to see that Shanny has the where-with-all to look at his 32nd ranked running game and realize changes need to be made. Kudos.

The point is that there was a "buyer beware" tag attached to Shanny-the-GM; and 2 weeks into the season I'm sort of starting to see why - we still don;t have a starter at LG, the RB situation is in disarray, no solution to AH in sight.

Shanny's made some nice moves. Shanny;s made some bad moves.

HAYNESWORTH TRAVELING TO ST LOUIS

ASHBURN, VA -- Washington Redskins team officials confirm that Albert Haynesworth plans to fly out to St. Louis this weekend aboard the team plane.

The Redskins are scheduled to play the Rams Sunday afternoon.

It's unknown what Haynesworth will be doing while in the city, but some folks are speculating that he'll probably visit the famed Gateway Arch on the edge of the Mississippi River, and may even tour the city's Anheuser-Busch Brewery.

However, team officials are saying it's highly unlikely that Haynesworth will put in an appearance at the Edward Jones Dome, home stadium for the Rams.

According to our sources, after playing sparingly in the Redskin season opener September 12, "Albert decided he is fed up with football already. So while he'll go along with the team whereever he must, he won't necessarily be doing anything that he doesn't want to do."

You make some good points. I'd also include a roster with only one real FS on it. I think that this year's team is better constructed than the last two rosters, but there have been some interesting decisions made about the roster at the start of the year.

Yeah, I don't understand why out "hybrid" front hasn't shown a few 4-3 looks yet. Apart from Carricker (who has been good so far), it suits the current personnel.

It would've helped produce enough highlight reels of Haynesworth and Carter (if the right team came in, he may waive his clause) to facilitate trades to teams that run a 4-3. Once the trade deadline's gone we'll be stuck with them for the season.

Also, if the trades brought in the right guys, our 3-4 would be more effective and future opponents would have less film of our new scheme and new personnel to prepare with.

It would've also helped the transition in the opening matches against D*ll*s and Houston.

To the posters above trying to compare Banks to Darren Sproles, you've obviously never seen Sproles up close. He's built like a tank. At 5'6" and 180 lbs, he can bench about 425 pounds and squat about 900. Add cat like quickness and the ability to hide behind blockers and you have a serious threat. Don't ever call Sproles small to his face. He'll shot put you into the next county.

The comparison is also a big stretch, considering Banks and Sproles play 2 entirely different positions.

As a RB, Sproles has alot of value outside of returning punts/kicks.

As a 5'-7''/150lb. wide receiver, Banks...not so much value.

I suppose you could make a case for "buyer beware" but it's usually based on his draft picks, not his roster decisions. In any event I'm not convinced by any of your three charges.

1. Running back? Yeah, it's bad so far, though I doubt Adrian Peterson could have run behind the line's blocking the first two weeks. But given what was available to them, I don't see that they could do much better than what they've got now. Do you want Betts? Marcus Mason? Anthony Aldridge? Westbrook? This was not a good year for FA running backs and most of the draft picks went toward the O-Line.

2. No starting RG? Huh? Derrick Dockery is the starter and has been. Kory Lichtensteiger's coming on and challenging him. That's a good thing, not "buyer beware." Here's a better one: benched Plummer for Cutler in mid-season.

3. No solution to AH in sight? That's how it's supposed to be. Vinny would be transparent and you'd know exactly what he's up to. "If he doesn't play well by the fourth game, we'll trade him for the best offer." Do you think that Shanahan has no plan or that he's just not tipping his hand publicly?

My take on what they "indended" was for him to show them in practice that they could put him on the field in a regular season game and that he wouldn't fumble. And, after three weeks of watching him, they decided it was too big of a gamble -- that if speed is his first name, fumble is his middle name.

Look, I don't know how you get around the fact that the RB situation/decisions so far is anything but an "F". 2 weeks into the season and we are totally re-making our RB rotation/personnel as we ponder being 32nd in the league in rushing. Your glass-has-a-few-sips-left take doesn't change the fact that the RBs are on him - his decisions, his call, his personnel.

In point 1, you talk about the run- blocking being a disaster. In point 2 you suggest it is somehow a good thing to have Dock and Lichtensteiger rotating in games. Has it occurred to you that maybe the run-blocking is a fiasco in part b/c there is a personnel rotation on the line and makes it difficult for the line to build chemistry?

We've had all OTAs, training camp and preseason to evaluate position competitions. Why Shanny decided to start one at the cusp of the regular season is a bit mystifying.

AH? What is there to say. He's still here, not contributing, being a fat-arsed d!ckweed toward the team/organization. Someone make a decision at some point please...

I can logically assume that they did not "intend" to let him return in the first couple games, by the fact that they chose to have OTHER people returning in those games.

Because if they intended to let him do the returning, one logically assumes that they would have actually let him do the returning.
