Brennan Struggles in 3rd Quarter

It was more of the same in the third quarter, as the Redskins continued to struggle. Don't want to beat a dead horse here, but even the one and only Colt Brennan could not escape the first- and second-year player problems of this game.

Brennan threw an interception and spent a ton of time scrambling, which obviously is also an indictment of the offensive line.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Jarmon, Antonio Dixon and J.D. Skolnitsky have looked good on the defensive line, which seems to be the one unit that is jam packed with depth.

Best stat of the night: Into the fourth quarter, Hunter "the Punter" Smith has seven punts. He had nine all of last preseason with the Colts.

He told me earlier in camp that he didn't expect to punt a lot this season because the offense would move the ball. Wonder what he'll say after tonight.

First, in Colt's semi-defense, alot of his passes were dropped.

How can you use the expression "beat a dead horse" when you're talking about Colt?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | August 13, 2009 10:16 PM | Report abuse

This #1 defense (the one we went for instead of O-linemen) seems to have forgotten how to tackle.

Sonny: The line can't protect him [Colt]

Sam replied: They can't protect anybody!

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | August 13, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse

So he had nine punts last pre-season and seven tonight. And that's relevant because....

Look, there's a recession on. People got to work harder to keep their jobs.

AlexVa1, all is good. But your nephew would fit right in on Redskins Insider.

Hope to hear from you both in the future... need more Alexandria pride posting up here!

classic t_e @ 10:09. Fingers crossed, huh? Simply classic. Like with AlexVa1, all is good. All is well. Just bs'n you, that's all. Really could care less about Vick ending up in Philly, 'cause it's not with the 'skins.

Caoch Z, please get Colt out of there. He's going to get pounded into jelly with that lack of protection and all his acolytes will suffer a spiritual crisis of Nitzschean proportions.

Lurie got him some Vick. So, Vinny and Danny gotta do something to keep up... How about trade some of that young D line for a little O line? Rob Jackson to Denver for Tyler Polumbus? Denver's O line is young and strong...

Orakpo is the real deal, at least rushing from DE. Wonder how linebacker is working out for him.

And wow, Colt almost just fell down in his endzone. Pretty much untouched.

Posted by: hithere1 | August 13, 2009 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Did Burley walk, limp, crawl, or get carted off the field?

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | August 13, 2009 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Football is a game of running, blocking and tackling. The team who does that better will win. The Redskins in this first preseason game have not been able to do any of the three. This is the worst coast offense, ladies and gentlemen. I think the defense will recover but that offensive line looked bad, bad, oh so bad.

Thanks, Stumped. I grew up in Virginia loving the Skins and used to go with my Dad and sons for training camp. I get regular grief from all the Cowpatties fans here for being such an avid 'Skins fan. After I finish listening to Sam and Sonny (ah, home) I'm going to go outside to watch the tumbleweeds blow by and see if there's any more dead armadilloes by the side of the road and just generally bask in the existential misery occasioned by this opening.

I would to like to thank my parents, my grandparents, my 3rd grade teacher Mr. Gill, and most of all GOD that game is finally over.

I mean, yeah it's preseason, but 23-0? And think about this: last year when the 'skins were molly wopped 47-7 by Carolina, it was just the preseason also. It gave absolutely no insight to the deficiencies of this team.

Kendall, Jansen, and La Canfora all must be laughing their collective asses off right now.

We simply need our opponents to have more injuries to key players; it's our only chance.

Yes, it's preseason but we know this: when they face a physical, athletic defense - even in preseason - they'll get completely shut down.

Most teams will, granted; but this team especially.

They can go anywhere from 9-7 to 6-10 depending on whether the line holds up.

Garbage. Crap. Cesspool.

Although preseason it seems to be the same thing last season and the one before. No effort. No will. Ravens did what they had to do to win. As they always do to the Skins. Very prepared to humiliate them.

Preseason or not the team should feel shame. Blessed crap.

Posted by: divi3 | August 13, 2009 10:53 PM | Report abuse

There was a lot of holding as well on the Raven's line... if you go back and look Orakpo was held and so was Andre Carter. The first drive for the Raven's Carter was held at least two times, coulda been drive changers, and with the way the game went... game changers.

'They were 4-0 in the preseason. Yes, they looked terrible but it means nothing.'

Who wins or loses the games means nothing, but how the players on the field perform speaks volumes. For instance you could clearly see in Marty's year during preseason that we were the worst team in the nfl, and for the first month of the season we were.

Offense shat the bed last season, and now again in this game. Bad tidings!

Posted by: RedDMV | August 13, 2009 11:05 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, it's only preseason but many of the same problems from the second half of last season are still apparently there.

It's been said a thousand-and-one different ways: this O-line will simply not do the job. Too old, too creaky, too un-athletic.

Athletic, stud D-lines will overwhelm them.

Posted by: SteveMG | August 13, 2009 11:09 PM | Report abuse

I thought Todd Collins looked terrible. He could barely throw the ball out of bounds. Zero arm strength.

Divi3,

One of the most mediocre Redskin preseasons from a performance standpoint was in '91. Gibbs was so pissed he had a public tirade (Playboy?). They went 14-2 and won the Super Bowl. It's too early for this garbage and anybody that tries to argue with me about this will lose. As I said, history backs me not the other way around.

Posted by: croftonpost | August 13, 2009 11:12 PM

I remember that preseason and it's not the same imho. The '91 team was losing preseason games, but the oline was holding their blocks and the receivers werent dropping balls. That team was executing bland, nothing plays that werent going to work. But they executed them.

This team cant execute anything on offense consistently. And considering all the health questions for the starters, it's very worrisome the backups cant do squat either.
