Shanahan hopeful that Rogers, Orakpo will play vs. Giants

By Jason Reid

Coach Mike Shanahan is hopeful that cornerback Carlos Rogers and outside linebacker Brian Orakpo will play in the season finale against the New York Giants.

"I just keep my fingers crossed that they're able to go," Shanahan said Monday at Redskins Park. "I really don't know at this time."

Rogers had his second interception of the season early in Sunday's 20-17 overtime victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and sat out most of the second half because of a calf problem. Hamstring problems sidelined Rogers for three games in the second half of the season.

Orakpo - the Redskins' sack leader with 8 ½ - sat out against Jacksonville because of a groin injury. Held often this season by offensive linemen, the second-year player had only 1½ sacks in his previous seven games.

"Carlos is a little bit more of a question mark than Rak," Shanahan said. "At least from our trainers.

"I'm giving you their opinions. But until we actually practice on Wednesday, I can't tell ya for sure."

I'm hopeful about this, too. I want to win this damn game!

How bad does David Gerrard have to feel knowing that he got picked off by Carlos Rogers?

Player of the Game: Adam Carriker.. dude was everywhere, making plays... where has he been all year?

He feels pretty good believe it or not. It means he throwing a good ball. Nice tight spiral with just the right touch. Otherwise Los wouldn't have been able to catch it. Now if he can just improve on his accuracy ...

FOUR drops by Cooley, mix in a handful of throw aways, a non INT and I guess that equates to a struggling QB.
The offense as a whole struggled.

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 27, 2010 4:23 PM

really? hmmm. WOW! etrod, you want to weigh in on this too? i personally think that cooley and the o-line are conspiring against Grossman. mcnaab never had to throw away the ball or and the receivers always caught the balls thrown to them. and the oline always gave him time too. that's what i think.

like i said before mcnaab was the best QB available. mcnaab was a SHANNY "mistake". and damn sure the handling of the situation was his mistake too. mcnaab is the same mcnaab he's been for 12 years just ask any iggles fan.

ohh and go Vick and the iggles all the way to the superbowl championship!!!!!!!!(that's only good for this year!).

Posted by: dealer1 | December 27, 2010 4:58 PM | Report abuse

ohh i forgot to mention that refs are conspiring too. :)

btw...seriously though wtf was that about? what was the explanation for not over turning that call?

Posted by: dealer1 | December 27, 2010 5:02 PM | Report abuse

Diesel, shanahan himself said the throw was late. I'll grant you it was a bad call, and Rex did some other good things, but why get so upset when someone says something critical of him?

Posted by: AdamCr | December 27, 2010 4:31 PM

Of course it was late throw to a 5'9 receiver in the corner of the end zone that turned into a jump ball.

Terrible play call and a bad throw that should have been called incomplete.

McNabb sucks and so does Grossman.

And dealer1 did you care to weigh in on those facts (4 drops, etc) or did you just want to be a jackass. McNabb clearly wasn't the best QB available because his acquistion cost was too high. Colt McCoy was taken in the 3rd and we could have had him if Vinny didn't waste that 3rd on Jarmon.

F the Eagles and F Vick. Go root for the Eagles somewhere else.

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 27, 2010 5:13 PM | Report abuse

I'm sure other people have commented on this, but that "Gator Chomp" thing Grossman did after his TD throw was disgusting.

I don't care that the game was in Florida, where his career peaked during his undergraduate years...

Hold up... checked out his game logs on pro-football-reference. And good grief, dude's been in the league for eight seasons -- has only played in 39 going on 40 games!!! -- and that was the first NFL touchdown pass he's ever thrown in the state of Florida.

(He's only played in one other game in the state, last season when the Texans visited the Jags. He went 3-for-9 with an INT.)

So maybe he promised his momma or his college roommate or somebody that he'd do that the first time he threw a TD in Florida. Whatevs, it was lame as hell.

Man, I hate having Rex Grossman as our QB.

M. Shanahan and Dies44: founding (only?) members of NAMGLA.

C'mon, dealer, no way you can be rooting for the Eagles in any form or fashion.

(The explanation was that the out-of-bounds left foot was the third foot to come down after the player took possession, not the second.)

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | December 27, 2010 5:20 PM | Report abuse

All I know is we are moving the ball much better with Grossman than with McNabb. I am not saying he is long term answer but we probably have more wins if he started from the beginnig. For all of you that are putting the Shanahan's down please give them at least a couple of years. They still need to overhaul this roster. We haven't had any decent production from the running backs. Our defense is horrible. They can't stop anyone.

Posted by: TheJury | December 27, 2010 5:26 PM | Report abuse

I'm with dealer, pulling for the Iggles to make it all the way through.

Among the contending teams, I want it to be "anyone but the Patriots", and I don't think the Falcons or Bears have what it will take to beat the Pats, though I could be talked into the Falcons.

But for some reason I think the Eagles could do it.

Would love for "my AFC team" the Steelers, or the Colts for that matter, upset the Pats in the AFC bracket and remove the possibility that they hoist the Lombardi once again.

Man, I wish the Skins were going to be in the playoffs.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 27, 2010 5:27 PM | Report abuse

Okay Diesel, I think we can agree on the interception at this point. Bad play all around, including the refs, but yesterday you didn't seem to think it was a bad throw. If you did, I misunderstood.

Don't throw that errant ball = problem solved

Posted by: AdamCr | December 26, 2010 2:33 PM

You're such a clown. Just a negative, whiney, fickle fan.

That was the play call into the wind, thrown to a 5'9 receiver that needs to box out the defender. Bad Play call and it wasn't an INT.

Feel free to take your weak ass allegiance to where ever McNabb plays next year.

steve_in_gp- WTF are talking about...Man/girl love? So are you member of NAMBLA? WTF kind of comment/joke is that?

And the explanation was nonsense. The second the ball touches your hand doesn't equal possession. TERRIBLE call and the league should apologize.

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 27, 2010 5:31 PM | Report abuse

How is anyone on here rooting for the Eagles?? I'd be happy for Vick too if he wasn't in the NFC East, but he is. Anyone hoping for them to win a super bowl obviously hasn't dealt with their fans at a stadium. Those insufferable heathens are bad enough having not won jack, I'd hate to think of them having a response to "zero rings".

Posted by: AdamCr | December 27, 2010 5:32 PM | Report abuse

TheJury, I see where you're coming from.

I just wish the Shanahans had figured out last winter that Rex was the best guy for this situation and not made the big trade for McNabb. It blows my mind that they brought him over and THEN learned all these terrible things about him, which indicated what a poor fit he was for the sacrosanct Shanahan system.

I'd rather have been watching Rex from the start than watching the ridiculous sideshow that developed with McNabb (in the wake of the Albert sideshow)... it probably would've been the same up-and-down season we got, but without that humongous, draft-pick-costin', nationwide-ridicule-garnerin' shabingus that was the McNabb experiment.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 27, 2010 5:33 PM | Report abuse

F the Eagles. I don't get how anyone is cheering for Vick. Can't stand the dog killer!!! I would have any other team that made the playoffs win beside Eagles.

Posted by: TheJury | December 27, 2010 5:37 PM | Report abuse

AdamCr- Where did I say that was a great/good/average throw? And the negative part is true until proven otherwise.

Nate- can't and will never pull for the Eagles. The Falcons are undefeated at home and have won 8 straight since they lost to the Eagles at the Linc. If the Falcons clich home field they will be tough to beat.

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 27, 2010 5:39 PM | Report abuse

AdamCr, once upon a time there was a good and decent man who walked among us, virtually speaking, in this community. A fellow Adam, as it happened. "Eagle Fan Adam." I hold him up as definitive proof that not all Eagle fans are insufferable heathens.

And I happen to be among the scant minority of Redskin fans who likes it when the Eagles do well. Not just not rooting against them, but kinda rooting for them. I'm not going to apologize for it.

And hey, it's been three years since the NFC East won a Super Bowl, so you have to admit it helps make the case that we're the best division in football to have any of our teams hoist the Lombardi, even one we hate.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 27, 2010 5:39 PM | Report abuse

So people are up here rooting for the Iglets to get their first ring, but im a bad fan for wanting a beter draft position and understanding the lack of nfl talent that is currently on our roster.

F the iggles and the ginas and the girls.

Posted by: Stu27 | December 27, 2010 5:40 PM | Report abuse

Man, Dies, you gotta lighten up (Sandy Baby) and learn to take some gentle ribbing. And no, the "G" doesn't stand for girl . . .

(Not terribly happy I had to confirm my memory and do a search for NAMBLA on the Googles. Now THAT'S on my permanent record.)

No one's disagreeing that it was a terrible call, bud: dealer asked for the explanation and I gave him the official one.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | December 27, 2010 5:40 PM | Report abuse

TheJury, while I agree that it's tough to root for Vick -- since I think there's got to be an important part missing for you to commit such heinous acts against animals -- he was punished according to our criminal justice system, and now he's free. He ought to have a chance to earn a living doing what he does best.

So while I'm skeptical about Vick the man, I believe in this second chance he's getting... and by golly he sure is making the best of it, isn't he?

Go back and read if you want to know. Your whole tirade started when I said the bad ref call wouldve been avoided if the errant throw was never made.

I'm not negative about the skins, just willing to admit when something has underwhelmed, ie shanahan thus far. Hope he gets better results because we're tied to him.

You're the resident shanahan cop until proven otherwise. Goodnight.

Vick's return to "glory" is simple...he's winning.

Winning is a cure all...period.

Let him have a game where he throws 3 picks and they lose in the playoffs...he will learn quickly how quickly people remember what he did.

If by rooting for him to succeed and by wanting to give the guy more than a YR to turn around the last 10 YRs then ok, I'm a Shanahan cop.

What's the alternative...Shanahan fails and Snyder goes back to business as usual. No thanks..

wireman, lots of peeps have teams they root for aside from the Skins. We've discussed this numerous times up here. The "other team" in my life, since I was a kid, has always been the Steelers.

Again, not going to apologize if that sounds weird. It's a big life. I've got a lot of love to spread around. Though nothing, nothing in the sports world comes close to my love for the Skins.
