Brief Update

Heard Petitgout had a very nice visit to the Park before taking off back home (he lives in Delaware).

Heard he looked good and appeared healthy according to some (Petitgout broke his fibula in November), and the film the straff watched on him was pretty impressive. In fact, at least a few people were wondering why exactly the Giants cut him in the first place, thinking maybe there was something unknown. 'Cause he looked good, he didn't save the Giants much of a cap hit, he's been a quality statting LT in this league for a long time and he just got a $10-million signing bonys from the G-men in 2003.

So what gives?

Anyway, NFL people say he has suffered from back problems, but I would't rule out the Skins getting something done barring him looking for another Dockery deal (he recently fired his Tom Condon and hired Rosenhaus, so with him that's always a possibility).

Negotiations between the Skins and Petitgout are ongoung, and he already visited Tampa and has drawn interest from other teams as well. However, there is not a sense from the Skins that they need to dive in here, either, and as I've said, this is a position where some coaches feel you can plug in from a mid-level free agent or draft pick.

-0-

Randoms: Found out today that Smoot got $7 million to sign. Not a bad payday at all. I also hear that the 2008 base salary might be guaranteed, so I am guessing he gets like $8.5 guaranteed in that 5 year, $25 million deal. Should have the firm details tomorrow ... Don't look now, but I hear the Broncos might be bringing in another decent corner for a free agent visit this week. Makes me wonder if they won't end up trading Dre' Bly if he becomes more trouble than he's worth. And you guys already know at least one team that thinks highly of him. I'm just sayin ... As of early tonight the Skins had no addition free-agent visits planned, but we all know that's always subject to change ... Heard tonight that Baltimore, Arizona and the Jets are possibilities for Todd Wade. Still does not look good for a return to the Skins at this point ... Okay, going to try to relax for a minute here and watch the second half of Chelsea/Portsmouth on TIVO. Cheers.

Petitgout seems like a good fit for us... I too wonder what baggage he has

Posted by: Dorf | March 5, 2007 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Thanks, Jason, for the Petitgout update but please no more talk about Denver! The Skins do not need to do anything with Denver ever again (at least for a long, long time).

Posted by: Lisa | March 5, 2007 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Seems like Petitgout is going to continue to have back problems and who knows if he'll have problmes with that leg that he broke last year. Too big of a risk here unless he's coming on board at a really cheap price. We'd be better off re-signing Todd Wade and moving him into the Guard spot.

I'm all for Petigout if we get him at a cap friendly number - say 3 years and $10 million.

Knowledge of the G-Men's offense would be a hidden bonus as well - he knows what schemes they used to overpower the Skins' defense in the running game. He also protected Eli's blind side, so he know as well as anyone what Manning's tendencies are and how to work him.

Okay help me out with some quality control... this is my skins buddy at work. He gets a lot of iffy info and who would know best to filter it than Jason and his quirky but lovable internet nerd friends:

"I talked to my cousin who is in the know. He also heard reports of
drafting Brady Quinn or Adrian Peterson and then trading which ever to a team with a late
first round draft pick and something to trade to us."

any help here? Doesn't seem to go along with anything mentioned up here, but he's a buddy so I got to try him out.

IMHO, i think we should leave peticoat alone. Having an injury plaugued o-lineman on the roster is bad news no matter how talented the dude. Ex. Tre' Johnson. Get a mid-rounder who can fill in and sign a young free agent there who can battle it out in camp. We still got 4 good to upper echelon linesmen, so we will be ok.

Posted by: Macaca Johnson | March 5, 2007 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Thanks.
whoo 7 million, some people were reporting a lot less. But still it isn't too bad and would be a great deal in this market if he returns to form.

I am glad the skins are using some patience with the guard situation.

Posted by: smoot smack | March 5, 2007 9:52 PM | Report abuse

I would hope that Bugel and Co. are looking at Luke as 1-2 year, flexible G/T backup who can fill holes when injuries strike or maybe do a few starts if his back and knee are OK.

This is not any long-term solution....but the same way Gibbs used to sign vet QB's late in the season to protect Joey T. (witness their signing of Hart and Bartkowksi in the mid 80's). I think it is a fine move and gives the OL the depth we have lacked for the last 2 years. Plus, you can get him on the cheap. No Brunnell, 7 year, $43 million contracts for him. Simple and smart thinking.

Someone must have spiked Snyder's Kool-Ade since he is thinking rationally.

Hopefully we will get Dre' Bly I guess the Broncos are not going to ask to trade Ladell Betts and shawn springs for Dre Bly because they recently signed a running back

Posted by: Alexander | March 5, 2007 9:52 PM | Report abuse

As good as Bly is, I think it would hurt in the long run to lose Springs.
Even if Denver gets desperate on the Bly situation, I wouldn't want to pull a deal. If Smoot returns to form, double-move starts to figure things out and springs is healthy, then you suddenly have 4 very good DBs, would that be like a Duckett type situation?
Speaking of that trade, how nice would that third rounder be to plug that hole at guard?

Bly vs. Smooty...

Smooty learned hus lesson, I would hope. Blye has been traded by more girlfriends in the last week than the whole Skins DB's have been in the past 4 years.

I'll take Smooty. Case closed.

watching the first season of grey's (not by choice). i have one question for all the ladies...HOW???? can you stand meredith grey's lisp, inflating/deflating lips, soar throat voice, acting(non). she's horrible!

Posted by: dealer | March 5, 2007 10:35 PM | Report abuse

I m thinking any of the young players we already have could fill in. Dockery had the benefit of having chris samuels and casey rabach next to him. We have a very strong line and i m sure anyone with decent size and technique could fill in.

Dealer, I love Grey's Anatomy...it's one of the few shows I watch besides sports stuff. That being said, the first season was the best. This season there is entirely too much DRAMA - unrealistic DRAMA. As one who has experienced a lot of unwanted drama in my lifetime, it's beginning to turn me off....I would like a little bit more reality. Plus, the characters (especially Meredith) have become unlikeable....they are all about "me, me, me". But I still watch it :)

Is it just me? Isn't this the one case where the 'skins can say, "Yeah, we were right about not overpaying you (Smoot)." [Pierce is perhaps another - not exactly playing 16 games a year.] But now they turn around and pay 7-8M gaar-run-teed! No wonder Smoot's so happy. If you don't fleece the 'skins one year come back later and fleece them then. I supposed I won't be invited on any Potomac cruises. Don't get me wrong. Back is good. But overpaying is not.

D-Orf, I, for one, couldn't get the yahoo tourney bracket to work - a week ago when it was discussed and set up (sorry bud) - so your plan may end up being the better one due to better execution. Let's hope we can get some follow-through - if one's already set up and I'm just the only idiot who can't make it work, maybe someone would be kind enough to straighten me out.

(I think it was dcsween or skinz who set it up.)

I'm totally treating this week like Shark Week. Just shotgunned a beer at a bar and am ready for a night of "Heroes" and "24".

i am happy to switch to a larger RI group for March Madness, will follow the majority. Just as long as there is someplace for us to taunt each other over our W-L records. remember, we have 4 months to kill before training camp.

Long live the RI.

it was my idea. i was the only genius who thought of it. i'm simply brilliant! sometimes i even amaze myself. a bracket during march madness! wow!

bucktown created the league, we joined. but i pointed out that wapo might have one too and it'd be easier to just use wapo's...since we're already on wapo.

so i guess there's no harm in having two leagues. it won't matter i'm picking MD to win it all in bof'em!

can't sleep again!argh!!!have to get up in 5 hours.....i need a career change...

but for those who haven't watched it. don't!! waste even the 14 minutes. it's a setup episode. you'll get all caught up in 60 seconds next week.

dealer, soooo right. Dumb episode, becoming a dumber show. Though, you have to admit they've taken torture to a much higher level this season. Art imitating life, unfortunately.

"Heroes", meanwhile...STELLAR.

Next "Heroes" is on 4/23. By then, the Terps will be national champs and the 'Skins will have drafted poorly. What a difference a month and a half will make!

Posted by: P Diddy | March 6, 2007 1:38 AM | Report abuse

Hey JLC,
Could you find out if the Redskins are considering drafting Anthony Spencer (DE) from Purdue? Because Purdue is known for good defensemen (Roosevelt Colvin, Shaun Phillips) and he could be an immediate starter. Gaines ran a 4.64 on the 40yd dash, Spencer did an impressive 4.7. And it gives a reason for the Redskins to trade down to Denver.

Maybe the Redskins can switch places with Minnesota (#7) or Houston (#8), get some extra picks, THEN trade 1st rounders with Denver and get MORE picks.

But of course, Dorf's inside idea sounds good too. Then we could force Denver to give us Bly and a few picks for a top 10 rookie.

Posted by: DCdangerous | March 6, 2007 1:53 AM | Report abuse

WHY AM I UP SO LATE??

Dealer, buck, whoever... yeah, I missed the memo on a RI brackets. Thought I was being a mover and a shaker up here by introducing it... I asked JLC about it and he didn't mention anything so i thought i was the first... silly me. Maybe we could get JLC to post the group on a thread so the loyal and faithful that missed the idea the 1st time around (Dorf) can join in your reindeer games.

This is what happens when I start to 'skim' and actually try and put effort into my job and personal life. Turns out my mom was pissed at me all weekend cause I came to visit and ended up spending most of Saturday afternoon BMGO on the couch with the laptop instead of spending quality time with her. (they don't own a basement so shut up)

probably won't be blogging on tuesday (today?) Going cold turkey for the day...

the dorf abides sleeplessly

Good news, P Diddy.

The Skins will NOT have drafted poorly by the time "Heroes" returns. The draft is late this year (4/28 & 4/29).

"Could you find out if the Redskins are considering drafting Anthony Spencer (DE) from Purdue?" DCdangerous

DC -

The hardest thing to do in the NFL is to get accurate information on what team is interested in drafting which players. A great deal of the "street talk" is disinformation, designed to conceal the true motives of each team.

The reasons for this are simple: the ability to get the player you really want, and trade leverage. For example, if Team A, drafting after the Skins, believes that the Skins are interested in the player that Team A really wants, then Team A is more likely to offer a deal to the Skins to swap same-round choices for additional consideration (extra picks in later rounds). This is a standard part of the draft process.

You may have noticed after the Combine last week that there were some comments about several players in particular. (Not impressed with Gaines Adams, not really sure about Branch, etc.) That was the official beginning of the disinformation season. There will be a lot more of it between now and the end of April.

The Redskins (and just about every other team) will do as much as possible to conceal the identity of the players they really want to draft. Unless your team has the #1 pick, other teams

The NFL draft isn't for seven weeks, but here's a projection that makes sense: The Vikings will choose safety LaRon Landry from Louisiana State with their first-round pick (No. 7 overall). That's assuming defensive end Gaines Adams of Clemson is picked before No. 7, and that's a safe assumption.

Dammit that the Jets get their new starting RB with our 2nd round pick! Seems crazy to me that the Bears would trade away Thomas Jones, but crazy is what the Bears have been doing so far (including sandbagging Lovie on the new contract, letting Ron Rivera go, franchising/enraging Lance Briggs). Something tells me their Round 2 pick is going to be a QB (thinking Drew Stanton, Michigan State). So long Kyle Orton.

Leonard Davis told the media he was close to signing with the Redskins but his family talked him into coming home to texas.

This goes against Jasons sources, and the coaching staff is a little more concerned then they say. They also were willing to pay that kind of money.

Just letting everyone know that I have been reading everything but not posting. I'm not into conjecture unless it has a point and there has been very little posted that has much of a point. I agree with those who think that the skins constraint has prettly much been forced on them this year. The FA signings so far have made sense because the D, especially the linebacking, really needed help.

To everyone - keep up the non-stop blogging. It is highly entertaining.

Someone needs to disconnect vinny's hotline to Denver. Every year he gets fleeced by Shanny & Co.

In '04 Vinny tossed in an extra 2nd to get portis. In '05 he gave up a 1st, 3rd & 4th to draft cambell. By the way, one pick later, the raiders got that draft pick for a 2nd rounder & a throw in TE. Then in '06 he got this great idea to offer a 3rd rounder to get a RB denver & atlanta didn't even want and we didn't even use!

I don't want anything to do with Denver. We will end up with bly, a monster contract, and no draft picks.

PFT is reporting that Petigout signed with the Tampa Bay Bucs, and is going to play tackle for them.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | March 6, 2007 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Good. I didn't like the 'unknown' on Petigout. It didn't make sense that the Gstrings released him. Something was up on that guy. Time to go to the draft and get our next starting O-lineman. Could even pick up a couple more O-line cap casulaties in June. I still think the Skins are going to accumulate (via trade and a move down) a bunch of picks. Gotta think they are planning something big via a trade. I would be very surprised if the Skins don't pick up at least seven more draft picks total in return for their #6 spot plus picks received in trades for either Portis or Betts, Springs and maybe even others on the roster (clarification: picks this year and future). Bly for Springs and some picks makes sense though I hate to do any more "bidness" with Shanahan. He kills Vinny dead everytime.
