Broncos take 3-point lead into 4th quarter
The Redskins had a chance to tie the score late in the third quarter but lost the ball on downs instead. The Broncos entered the fourth quarter clinging to a narrow 17-14 advantage.
Coach Jim Zorn will face plenty of questions over his decision to go for it on fourth-and-one from Denver's 28-yard line. It would've been a 45-yard field goal attempt for kicker Shaun Suisham, who's 10-for-10 on field goal tries this year. Instead Zorn kept his offense on the field.
With less than a yard to go, quarterback Jason Campbell appeared to switch plays at the line, spotting linebackers plugging the middle and likely checking out of a quarterback-sneak. Instead, he handed the ball to Rock Cartwright who ran wide right, was stuffed and lost two yards on the play.
Stripped of play-calling duties earlier this season, making the key decisions on fourth down is among Zorn's biggest remaining gameday responsibilities.
Both teams failed to score in the third quarter. The Broncos were forced to switch quarterbacks and had fewer than 30 yards of total offense in the quarter. Chris Simms began the half at quarterback for the Broncos after Kyle Orton injured himself on the Broncos' final offensive play of the first half - a third-down scramble for three yards; tackle by Brian Orakpo -- and limped into the locker room. Orton suffered an ankle injury and his return is doubtful. Simms played the entire quarter and was 2-of-6 passing for 6 yards.

Actually that still doesn't excuse him from all the missed tackles.. But big play! Let's score a TD NOW.

DeAngelo Hall should get yelled at on the sidelines. Why the h!ll did he lateral the ball to LaRon Landry? WTF was the thinking? That could have turned out much worse. And also he should have knelt and let it be a touchback. He is VERY lucky that that play did not turn out badly.
Posted by: jiacinto | November 15, 2009 3:30 PM | Report abuse
I know this sound silly but how about getting Landry a shot at RB? Did you see how hard it was to bring him down?
Posted by: demonj21 | November 15, 2009 3:31 PM | Report abuse
ZERO reason to lateral the ball there.
Even when they do something well these guys manage to do something stupid. It really shows what kind of players they are deep down - bad.

to be fair to ladell, i dont think portis would have broken that tackle by Dawkins to get into the end zone. when CP comes back, there's no more #1 RB in my mind. RB by committee has worked well for 6 Quarters now, and we have to do it that way the rest of this season so we have some fresh RBs at every point of the game.

I literally don't know what to do or think or feel.
We're winning.
We scored more than 20 points.
Our offense mounted decent drives from the start of the game.
We overcame 14 point deficit.
Our running game was consistently a threat.
Our receivers shaked and baked.
Our punter threw a TD.
Our defense overcame two huge bad plays.
Our quarterback made consistently decent decisions.
Is this what football is supposed to be?

This proves to me that Zorn goes, Lewis comes in as OC and ANYONE else is HC. Lewis can call a good game despite the OL being trash, our QB being scared out of his mind and our "star" RB being out (hopefully for a while, i.e. not see the field) with a concussion. I could only imagine what he would have been able to do with this offense from day one. I don't care if it's Zorn's offense or not, Lewis is calling the right plays to allow plays to be made and get players involved. Zorn did not do either. Therefore, he has to go. I just hope we don't have a letdown next week. I want to either win and have Lewis pump some sense into the owner that an OL is necessary, or have us lose and have the latter be true anyways. Imagine what this offense could do with a couple weeks of good protection (JC isn't scared), and everyone getting involved. It's almost scary in a good way to think about.

Postgame live just said the CR was benched after the first long pass to Marshall. I guess we might see Barnes next week.

It's about time someone shows the players that if you dont perform you get benched.

But does this win save Cerrato's job?

Prescient post of the day:
Wish today could be like some of the fun football movies, where the team just rallies from within themselves, in spite of the coaching, in spite of all the odds. Don't care if it's last-second field goal or trickery or something one-of-a-kind. We need a victory. And then we need to celebrate a little bit, and then get back to work -- not say, ah, see, the gods/fates/refs are finally on our side.
This season has been its own version of "Marat/Sade," so why not some "Leatherheads" or "Longest Yard" or "Bad News Bears"?
Hail Hogs!

curzon 417: so what if jc threw 3 or 4 bad passes today. so did both bronco qb's. and two of jason's 'overthrows' actually hit receivers in the HANDS! don't THEY get paid, too? the thing is ALL qb's miss opportunities; some close, some not close. we WON. and it wasn't no accident.

Ummm I'm thinking maybe someone wants to tell CP that it turns out practice may actually be worth it. . .and you know what Betts and Rock earned starting next week.

I'm proud of the Redskins. They came out and played hard for 4 full quarters. Our O-line played great, the play calling was great, JC needs to settle down and be more accuarate(if he IS capable), Ladell Betts is and was better than I thought. Hats off to A.Haynesworth he was a warrior today going back on the field after hurting his ankle.
Finally this team looked and played like a Redskins team is supposed to. Thomas and Kelly contributed, they played and fought hard. Let's enjoy this and prepare to do the same against Dallas! FIGHT FOR OLD DC, HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!!!!

Couple of thoughts.
1. Why hasn't Rino been in earlier? I think this talk of bust is mis-placed. He's obviously better than Will Montgomery. He took care of his business. He should have been the starter, consecutively, since Thomas went down.
2. Why wasn't Levi Jones signed during the pre-season? Seems like we could have used him for the last 4 weeks (and before).
3. Time to bench Portis. All Portis defenders, you have to admit that he's being outplayed by Betts & Cartwright. Period. There just isn't any debate. Portis is done. 3rd String. Shoot, 4th string, I'd rather see more Ganther.
4. DT and MK looked like they might be coming along. Finally.
5. We can't do anything this year. But the last 6 quarters makes me think that maybe we aren't the long term rebuilding project that I thought we were. We need a LT, RT and RB to be competitive next year. We should be able to get that done in the off-season between FA and the draft.
6. 1-3 is yet another indictment of Zorn. I'm no defender of Snyderatto. But this team is better than our record. Obviously not a playoff team. But not the joke we've been so far.
