Broughton Re-Signs

The Redskins have just announced that they have re-signed Nehemiah Broughton, 5-11, 255-pound fullback. He was on injured reserve all last season and spent all but the last two games of the 2006 season on the practice squad.

Ya see, I know nothing about this guy.
Nothing!
I can't even get his name right.

But I want him to have a break out season.

The only thing is would it be a break out season for him if his career looks like this?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=8636

Technically, is he still a rookie?

Nemo was the missing piece of the puzzle.

"It was missing a piece
And it was not happy
So it set off in search
of its missing piece
And as it rolled
It sang this song -
'Oh I'm looking for my missin' piece
I'm looking for my missin' piece.
Hi-dee-ho, here I go,
Lookin' for my missin' piece.'"

With one 3 yard game and 2 solo tackles I'm gonna guess and say that Nemo is a Teams man.

Stupid FO. We need a tall wide receiver and instead they sign this guy who's a fullback? Any chance he can taller and faster and develop soft hands? Could he at least bulk up and play guard? Can he do "Dancing with the Stars?" Man, I don't get it.

Though, I am eyeing one of those cool Panerai watches...

Uh, yeah...something like that :-)

Posted by: PDiddy | April 2, 2008 8:53 PM | Report abuse

diddy,

I just looked at those watches and are you aware that the cheapest is about $5000? Okay, they look hot, even on the internet, but I can get you a good Casio that's just as accurate for under $35. What do you think?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | April 2, 2008 8:57 PM | Report abuse

The saleswoman in Vegas tried to get me to buy the one that was as much as a Prius. The thing about the Panerai (and others of that ilk) is that they are heirlooms that more or less retain their value. The aftermarket on those things are pretty hot.

All of that said, I can think of a lot better things to do with the money...

t_e, shouldn't you be putting the finishing touches on your draft board?

Mine looks like this:

1. Jessica Alba
2. Jessica Biel
3. Jessica Simpson

Posted by: PDiddy | April 2, 2008 9:03 PM | Report abuse

diddy,

Buy 150 shares of Apple. Sell it in two years and you can buy two of those watches. Maybe three. Talk about heirlooms.

You have to be drafting high to get those names you listed. They're going off the board early.

Given that the draft is based on parity, only major losers, like Hugo from Lost have a chance at those. You're drafting late, diddy. You're looking at some 35 year old divorcees with two kids. You should stick with the free agent market.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | April 2, 2008 9:13 PM | Report abuse

I've done my mock draft. I'm going with Charlize Theron in the first round. Marissa Miller in the 2nd. Model 13 from Deal or No Deal in the third. Using the comp pick to get Vanessa Williams, also in the 3rd. The hot teller at my local bank is my 4th round pick. Carla Gugino in the 5th, Ashley Judd in 6th and in the 7th round, Scarlett Johanssen.

Now, go ahead and mock me :)

Posted by: zcezcest1 | April 2, 2008 02:53 AM

Diddy, wouldn't go for J Simpson. Who wants Tony Romo's seconds? Actually, come to think of it, its Romo thats getting seconds ...

Posted by: zcezcest1 | April 2, 2008 9:21 PM | Report abuse

t_e tells me I got no shot at model 13 in the 3rd round. That she's got round 1 talent. I think t_e is hoping to get Theron, and wants me to use my round 1 pick on model 13 instead.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | April 2, 2008 9:24 PM | Report abuse

As some of you might have expected, I am pissed off at this move by the Skins. I am 6'1", 265 lbs. fullback with no injury history.

A shame, I tell you.

Posted by: TDawg | April 2, 2008 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Diddy, you want those watches. here' how to get them. Start with $2million. Invest it in stocks. After 3 years, you'll probably have enough left to buy either a Prius or a fancy watch, but not both.

zeke,

The draft is based on parity. Losers first, winners last. I'm confident I'll be drafting ahead of most of you guys up here. So, I'm assuming that you're trying to throw me off by showing me your board. But, you'd be crazy to let model 13 slip past you on the first round, assuming that she's still there when you're picking.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | April 2, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Are there any life lines I can use?

F it, here goes

1. What is "loseable type?"

Slang term to denote the inexpensive software selected by the Washington Post to run their blogs, known to drop comments or "loose type."

2. Who are "the vagiants?"
Misogynistic term used to disparage the the New York Giants football team. Not to be confused with any Virginia teams that use the giants name.

3. What does "LMAO" mean?
Laugh...My...A$$...Off

4. What is meant by "pigeonholed?"
Term originally refers to rectangular holes in antique desks used to file paper. Later the term is used to describe the process of confining someone or thing to a single slot, position, or place. Similar in some respects to the term typecast when applied to actors.

5. What's the difference between a strong safety and a free safety?
Geez, a football question. I think the strong safety plays in the seam behind the line backers and is usually the safety that keys on the run, whereas, the free safety stays back in coverage.

6. Why doesn't Jason Campbell call more audibles?
This is a trick question, I just know it. My guess is that the main reason is that defense usually show a lot of motion right be for the snap to try and make the QB audible into the wrong play. It probably takes about 5 years worth of experience for a QB to be comfortable calling his own audible. (but with a working headset, why would a QB call his own audible anyway?)

7. Why don't the Redskins score more points on special teams?
God only knows.

Steve Slaton, RB WVU, could help our return game and might prove to be a difference maker in the backfield, ala Brian Westbrook, Philadelphia Eagles.

He's small at 5'9", but explosive.

We need him, or someone just like him.

Posted by: podspeak | April 3, 2008 3:03 AM | Report abuse

You're just a moron. You talk about CJ like you know him. I live in the Cincy area and have friends that know him personally. I've net him. He's a really nice guy. He wants to win and is unhappy about playing for losers. His plays for a penal league team and a bunch of coaches and front office personnel that don't mind adding a bunch of degenerates to the team. Seems to me that TJ is a little pissed too and he is usually pretty quiet. Maybe the front office and coaches are the ones messing everything up. Seems to me when you have the talent on that team that they have and you can't win, can't keep half your team out of jail, and you're 2 leading weapons are unhappy, maybe you're doing something wrong. Yes, CJ does have a rockstar mentality, but he wants to win. NO ONE wants to play for losers. As far as your locker room comments, I don't think you've ever been in a locker room with this guy so you really can't say one way or another. you just speculate as if it were fact and we should all just buy what you have to say. By the way, CJ and Santana are really good friends, can't see them fighting too much over who's # 1 or #2, especially if we're winning

Posted by: scampbell1975 | April 2, 2008 01:00 PM
------------------------------------------
Sigh.

Campbell, YOU are the moron. Congrats that you met CJ and he signed your cap for you. I'm sure that made your day. But if you actually READ my posts, you would know that I admitted that he's probably a cool guy to have drinks with but I wouldn't want him on my team. Football is a business. Guys don't get cut because they are a-holes. Guys don't get signed or traded for because they're nice. CJ is 30 and this team needs to get younger in a bad way. His antics aside, I still wouldn't want him.

And you assume that coming here is like he's going to New England. Even though their FO is way worse than the ours, their W/L record since Marvin Lewis has been there is better than ours. And they've actually won a division, the Skins haven't! He's got Carson Palmer at QB and he's coming into a project with Jason Campbell(another point I made yesterday that you apparently didn't bother to read). And that's not even taking into account the new coach. So he would be coming to a worse offense (at least initially), with approximately the same W/L situation and he's magically going to be happy? Because you met him and he was nice to you?

I don't profess to know ANY of the athletes we discuss here. In fact, the likelihood is that no one on this blog knows any of these athletes on a personal level. And just because you met him once, you don't REALLY know CJ. We're speculating, projecting, discussing. Just because my projection and speculation doesn't match yours doesn't make me an idiot, nor does it mean that I hate CJ.

If you live in the Cincy area and love what CJ's cookin' so much, why don't you get on the Bengals chat?

You spoke to me (or wrote) in a civil manner and didn't act like I was plotting to kidnap CJ and hold him for ransom. You also seem to be able to understand the concept that we can disagree and not have to be mortal enemies. I try to sway you to my side of the argument, you try to sway me to your side of the argument, and once the tug of war is over, we shake hands and call a truce.

This would be good time to pipe in Earth, Wind and Fire's "That's The Way of the World"...

I will be the first to admit that I am wrong. I have re read your posts and may have jumped to some conclussions. I briefly alluded to the fact in a later post that I may have overstepped some imaginary line. As for the namecalling, childish at best, I agree. So in the future, I will read more carefully (a lot of the time I'm in a hurry when I try to catch up on here). As for CJ, I've met him quite a few times and he didn't sign my cap. Why would I have a Bengal sign a Redskins cap? Anyways, I stand corrected.

Posted by: wm_mulholland | April 3, 2008 8:08 AM | Report abuse

Also Brown, I wasn't making a case for him to come here. I was more reffering to his actions and the actions of the team he plays for. The whole locker room cancer theory. I believe it is much deeper than it appears. Everyone is looking to pin this on CJ, and while it might be mostly his fault, it might not be either. I think it's a little off calling him a cancer when we don't know what's really going on. Most of his teammates really like him and will tel you that he's a good locker room guy. My point was that TEAM has problems that go far deeper than CJ's mouth. The only time I made a mention of him in connection with the Skins was in regards to your comment about him and Santana. Looks like we're arguing 2 different points. I know that your original discussion was in regargds to him becoming a Redskin and why it would not be a good idea. I was only refering to his situation in Cincinatti.

OK Campbell,

Truce. And for the record, I never hung Cincy's problems on CJ. They have a locker room almost completely made up of turds, so you can't pin that on just one guy.

Nemo was a smart resign at a bargain price, even though he has proven nothing yet. Zorn's offense makes big use of the full back as evidenced by Seattle having 2 probowl Fullbacks. Nemo was the guy that Ernest Byner had to have. He pleaded his case and the skins drafted him. He has tremendous potential. He has the size of a fullback with the speed of a running back. Hopefully he will have a break out season this year.

Update on USC pro day... Just a quick update on the Southern California pro day yesterday. DT Sedrick Ellis, the Trojans top prospect for the 2008 draft, also had a very solid workout to likely lock up at top 10 selection later this month. Ellis weighed in at 297 pounds, 10 pounds or so lighter than at the combine, and it showed as he cut his 40 time from a disappointing 5.25 in Indianapolis to the 5.05 range yesterday. Ellis also reportedly posted an impressive 36 reps pressing 225 pounds.

Also from GBN:

Long-lost Jets pick found... More than one New York Jets' fan wondered why the pick the team supposedly acquired from Washington for OG Pete Kendall last August did not show up on the official selection order for the 2008 draft the NFL released earlier this week. According to reports, the Jets had acquired a conditional 5th round pick from the Redskins for Kendall that would escalate to a 4th if Kendall met certain playing time goals. In fact, it appears that Kendall met those thresholds. It also appears, though, that because Washington had previously traded its 4th round pick at the 2008 draft to Denver as part of the complicated deal that brought WR Ashley Lelie to the Redskins, that the 4th rounder the Jets ultimately get for Kendall will be in 2009.

CJ's "grills" are one thing ... its kitsch.

Crime is a completely different matter and worthy of scorn and avoidance. http://www.hcso.org/PublicServices/InmateInfo/InmateDetails.aspx?JMSid=1294478

skinsfan, NFL Network was saying that the LB from USC was even more impressive, can't recall his name.

Elsewhere, there was also a pretty good turn out at Northern Iowa where OT Chad Rinehart was the featured performer, however, fellow OT Brandon Keith may have stolen the show. The 6-5, 345-pound Keith reportedly ran the 40 in just over 5-flat, a very fast time for someone that size. For his part, Rinehart wasn't as fast in the 40, posting a time of 5.25 seconds, but was quicker than Keith in the other speed and agility drills.

I think the Redskins should go after this cat Keith. Have him drop 10-15 pounds, and insert him into the G spot and see how he does.

Again, from GBN:

There was a full house at Southern California yesterday as the Trojans wrapped up the on-campus workout schedule. And LB Keith Rivers took advantage of the opportunity to state his case to be the first backer off the board later this month at the 2008 draft, as well as possibly be a top 10-15 pick. Rivers ran the 40 in what is being reported as under 4.6 seconds with at least one team stopping the clock in as low as 4.51 seconds. Just for good measure Rivers posted an off the charts 42.5 inch vertical leap. RB Chauncey Washington also had a good day after he reportedly ran in the 4.35 range for the 40. Meanwhile, DE Lawrence Jackson didn't run, but was put several LB drills to see if he might be a possible as a 3-4 pass rush OLB.

Vikes' FA signing puts kibosh on possible QB deal... Minnesota has reportedly agreed in principle on a multi-year deal with veteran QB Gus Frerotte. While the parties have agreed on terms the deal won't be officially completed until later this week. The acquisition of the 36-year-old Frerotte, who played with the Vikings in 2003 and 2004 before going to the Dolphins in 2005 and the Rams the past two seasons, pretty much ends the Vikings atempts to trade for Houston QB Sage Rosenfels. The Vikings had reportedly offered a 3rd-round choice for Rosenfels, but the Texans were holding ot for a second-rounder. Frerotte will return to Minnesota as a backup to Tavaris Jackson, and could get a shot at starting if the former falters this fall. Meanwhile, the Vikings are still expected to bring in a young developmental QB through the 2008 draft.

And if they can't come to terms with either they can trade for Ramsey.

Player Profile: OT, Duane Brown, Virginia Tech
Contributed by: Greg Herrington

Attributes:

6'6", 315 lbs.; 5.07 (40), 1.75 (10), 24 reps

Strengths:

Duane Brown is one of the more athletic tackles in this year's draft. He is a raw prospect that has above average strength, quickness and athleticism for the position. He plays with good aggression and knows how to finish off his blocks. He's not a dominant drive blocker and relies more on position to wall-off defenders. He possesses good short area mobility and has the feet to mirror, but needs to show more consistency. He shows good lateral movement and is light on his feet, showing better than average ability to get to the second level. He doesn't always maintain proper position but has the athleticism and balance to recover. Duane Brown is a fast rising prospect with plenty of upside and has rare size, quickness, balance and athleticism for the position.

Weaknesses:

Although Brown is light on his feet, he struggles on an island against speed rushers and may be better suited at RT. He is a raw prospect with upside, but needs work on his overall technique. He fails to keep his hands within his frame on a consistent basis and shows inconsistent hand placement. His lower body is a bit stiff and does not show adequate knee bend. He is not known as a hard worker and needs reps to develop a better feel in pass protection. Brown needs to develop better lower body strength to improve his drive blocking and his abilities to anchor. Despite his negatives, Duane Brown has natural abilities and could develop into a solid starter with proper coaching.

NFL Comparison: Wayne Gandy

Draft Projection: Round 3
Career Stats:

During his last two full seasons (2006, 2007) Duane Brown had the following stats:

Plays (1,616)

Overall Grade (78.89%)

Pancakes/Knockdowns (56)

Touchdown resulting blocks (17)

QB Pressures Allowed (7)

Sacks Allowed (12.5)

Honors:
2007:
Second Team All-ACC

Voted State Offensive Line/End of the year pick, (Richmond Touchdown Club)
Recipient of the President's Award (Outstanding leadership on offense)

2006:
Second Team All-ACC
Voted State Offensive Line/End of the year pick, (Richmond Touchdown Club)

I also was wondering about the 4th round Kendall pick idea ... I'm wondering whether the Skins might be able to trade down a few spots in the first round in order to pick up a 4th round pick that they can unload to the Jets in THIS draft.

[p.s. I pay off my credit card monthly.]

For all the non-excitement about it, re-signing Nemo is actually news ... earlier in the off-season, Vinny had said FB depth was a "need."

"... Washington also has depth needs at center, safety and fullback -- finding role players often is relegated until the second week of the free agent period -- and the club wants to re-sign backup quarterback Todd Collins as well. ..."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/story/2008/02/27/ST2008022704107.html

By re-signing Nemo (as well as TE/FB/H-back-type, Pete Schmitt), that "need" is covered. Hence, no more salivating over the idea of that guy from WV (Owen Schmidt) or, in my case, Jehuu Caulcrick (Michigan State!).

Also, I have other reasons to think this is a need. After Sellers got laid out in the Minnesota game, I was worried he might be dead. A concussion where you actually lose consciousness is serious business. I love Mike Sellers as much as the next guy (frankly, after Sean Taylor, he's been my fave Skin), but the brain is a terrible organ to have injured. [The brain constitutes an organ, right? While I'm at it, is the tomato a fruit or a vegetable?]

The reason he didn't even see the cart was because he was unconscious ...

" ... "I'm fine," Sellers said. "I didn't even see the cart. I didn't see the cart come on the field. I don't feel like I have a concussion." ..."

km, thanks for the hookup on Brown. Seems to me, that between Heyer, Jansen, and Wade the RT position is ok. I think G is more of a position of need right now.

Greg,

I agree on G being the need I say we try to pick up two G's in the draft.

This issue was only a problem in New York because, as everyone knows, Jets fans aren't smart enough to read. The deal was set up to be a 5th round pick in 2008, which could "improve" to be a 4th round pick in 2009 if certain playing time requirements were met. For all intents, Kendall played 100% of the Redskins' offensive snaps in 2007, and the upgrade was activated. Final result - Jets traded Kendall for a 4th round pick in 2009.
