Bruce Allen: McNabb extension long in the works

By Barry Svrluga

Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen said Monday night that Donovan McNabb's contract extension has been in the works "for some time" and the team had long targeted the bye week to finalize the pact.

Speaking in an interview with play-by-play man Larry Michael, an employee of the team, on team-owned radio station ESPN 980, Allen declined to confirm the terms of the five-year, $78-million deal.

"Donovan is happy, but really our focus is on the Eagles," Allen said. "This isn't in any form of a distraction because it's really something that we've known we're going to do for some time."

Allen said several times that the Redskins expected McNabb to be in Washington long-term ever since they traded two draft picks for him in April.

"I think Coach [Mike Shanahan] and myself said that Donovan's going to be here from the beginning, and Donovan has been real clear in his intent of being a Redskin," Allen said. "So I think it just puts [an] exclamation point on it and now we can focus on the Eagles."

Michael asked Allen what role Shanahan played in the deal, a question Allen dodged.

"Well, Mike's our head coach and, obviously, from the point we traded for him, it's developing this team, getting this team to go forward and compete in the NFC East, Allen said.

Allen did not address McNabb's performance to date. His quarterback rating of 76.0 through eight games would be his lowest since his rookie year of 1999, and he has thrown more interceptions (eight) than touchdown passes (seven).

"When we made the trade for him, we understood what we were getting in Donovan," Allen said. "We're pleased with the leadership that he brings and we believe he can help us win."

Wow, Bruce Allen sounds like someone who knows he better not say something wrong, or he'll need to go sit in a corner or something.

I'm starting to think some up here could get Jesus Christ under center and still find something wrong...

Well, you have to admit it would be painful to watch Rabach step on Jesus's bare foot.

bw26-

That was in reference to Shanahan being a "liar". Shanahan said it would take two years to learn the offense and has commented at least twice about McNabb being behind the learning curve.

You reference ONE game that we lost and I'll raise you seven others games, 28th rated passer, has more INTs than TDs, and turns 34 in 10 days. Considering they overpaid for a guy that is on the back nine of his career (it's also raining and getting dark) they should have waited and let McNabb earn the contract. No way it would have cost us a penny more but would have allowed us to see if he'll turn it around this year.

You probably cheered the Deion, Bruce Smith, Stanley Richards, James Washington, Stubby, Wilkinson, & Haynesworth deals/trades too.

I wanted to keep JC and all his flaws one more year and bulid the OL and DL because EVERYBODY should have known that we were more than a 34 yr old QB away.

McNabb already looks winded.

Sincerely,

Albert Haynesworth

I did too but once he's here he's a Redskin and I rout for the team no matter what.

You'll never hear me disagree with that. But what's done is done...and we can either sit up here and wish for mulligans that aren't coming or move on with what we've got. This regime has hitched its wagons to McNabb and I'm going along for the ride.

It's insanely shortsighted for people to lump the now infamous Bruce Smith/Deion Sanders/Haynesworth/etc. signings with the McNabb deal. Different position, different regime altogether. If Vinny makes this move, I share your pessimism. Since grown ups made this deal, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

So this is the right move. We're not sinking another pick into a QB, we can take our time drafting that "QB of the future", and use our 1st and 2nd rounders to give #5 some help.

Posted by: brownwood26 | November 15, 2010 7:06 PM | Report abuse

Man, the media is literally beating this to death.

I guess Shefty isn't so tight with Shannny after all.

Can we please get back to ipping Haynesworth?

Can we talk about Brandon Banks' return? Pardon that pun.

How about LL30 playing 'Spy' on the dog-killer?

Last question, will there be one white commentator that calls this contract an 'apology' or are only black dudes taking that tact?

If that isn't racial coding, NOTHING IS.

Mora Jr. and Billick hit it on the head just now. "You don't give a guy $40 mil just to placate him or apologize" -Billick "I think the media had everything overblown. And that happens with all the media coverage and certainly the benching was a big deal but not as big as we all made it out to be." -Mora

Posted by: scampbell1975 | November 15, 2010 7:08 PM | Report abuse

When is 40 million guaranteed, not guaranteed? When the guaranteed money is tied to skill. Interesting.

You can only give someone the benefit of the doubt so long. This was not a good deal - too much money guaranteed for a guy who has underperformed. I would have rather seen DM improve his performance in the 2nd half before paying him that kind of $ (+ also staying healthy behind our porous OL). Granted, his protection has been non-existent, but rookie mistakes should not be made by a decade-long vet.

Not saying I'd ever root against the TEAM and I hope he plays lights out for the next 3 years and rides off in to the sunset after leading us to a super bowl.

I'm just saying that they overpaid to acquire him and then overpaid to extend McNabb.

Anyways..

Vick gets taken out again and we use the bye week to our advantage.

That freshman QB from Georgia looked pretty good against Auburn. I've been spending a lot of time watching college QBs wondering who will be the one eventually.

Diesel, I recall finding little company in voicing my initial disappointment at the McNabb trade. I would have gone OL this offseason and I pointed towards Pouncey as the guy that seemed like the best guy to get after an OT. But that didn't happen

McNabb's deal is done. Now that we are 8 games into 2010 and $50million in commitments to Donovan, there seems to be more people wondering what exactly we got ourselves into ...

At least we didn't:

1) Do the Cutler deal

2) Trade last years, and this years first rounders and probably a second to move up and take Bradford (too much) Although he doesn't look that bad...

True, but you have to admit greasy little Dan knows how to put butts in the seats. He is Mr. Splash.

This is a $40M stop gap. Sure, I'd like to see someone like Bradford instead, but DMac ain't half bad while they spend the next two years rebuilding the rest of the team. Though I know people hate to see the R word.

Irvin just woke up after smoking mad pole all night last night for crack rocks.

Pretty funny how 'Poke fans are going to start in with the 'We can go on a run' or 'Our off-season is now and we will smoke you next year' crap.

What a bunch of latent homos who barely make more than the illegals sneaking through their yards.

Zeke- I was right there with you when the trade was announced and I'm not a fan of this extension either. But alas, he's here and I'll root for him until he's not.

I'm also not buying that the contract was the "best apology since Kobe Bryant's". This contract was on the table and after seeing his play slip and the market sour some on #5, his agent knew there wouldn't be a better deal in the offseason and expedited the deal.

I will never understand going into a game with only two active tailbacks. I guess it'd be on McNabb and the Oline pass pro if both are hurt.
