Gruden: Don't be surprised if Redskins take QB -- in later rounds

ESPN analyst Jon Gruden went through five NFL Drafts with Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen while the two were together in Tampa, so he knows a little bit about Allen's style and tendencies. He said today on a conference call that he wouldn't rule out the Redskins targeting a quarterback in next week's draft, though he suggested that the team might try to nab someone in the later rounds who's currently a bit under the radar.

"I know Bruce Allen well enough to know that he knows he needs a quarterback. ... I don't put anything past Bruce Allen, that's for sure. He's got a unique way of looking at things," said Gruden, the Bucs' former head coach.

Gruden said he liked the Redskins' acquisition of Donovan McNabb but because he's a proponent of sitting a rookie quarterback and allowing a rookie time to adjust to the NFL, Gruden could see the Redskins still drafting a quarterback despite McNabb's new spot on the roster.

If you're wondering about what darkhorse quarterbacks might be available late in the draft, fellow ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski tossed out a couple of names: Tennessee's Jonathan Crompton and Northwestern's Mike Kafka.

As for the draft's top quarterbacks, Jaws has Oklahoma's Sam Bradford as his top-rated quarterback. Gruden feels Bradford will likely be the draft's top pick, but says Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen might be more likely to have an immediate impact for a team.

You operate under a faulty premise. I look at what the numbers tell me, not the other way around.

There was a substantial difference in how the Skins went about drafting compared to the best teams.

As for a winner's bias, the issue comes about because of small sample sizes -- and I used a large sample -- I think about 200 picks over 9 years -- were involved in the analysis.

Andre is a class act, and it would behoove the new regime to find a place for him to be a big part of the new defense. He's a team player who is going to give you all that he has.

Posted by: Jason10 |

He flopped as a OLB...wonder if he's been tried inside in a 3-4. Threat to rush on any down with Fletcher covering deep zone.

Agree Jason, he's always been a class act. Legs like a Flamingo and barely 250 soaking wet, he can't be an anchor DE in a 3-4

ILB may be the best spot for him.

Brooklynskins brought up a good point: Do we have to go to the 3-4 this year? I mean, maybe the DC thinks that the 3-4 is a better scheme overall but is it the best thing for right now or is 2011 a more reasonable goal.

I hope the Redskins stay out of the quarterback business until 2011 when they can select a passer for the future with their top pick.

The balance of 2010 needs to be about filling out the OL, OLB and S spots on the team with a younger running back also a need.

If the skins take a OT with the first pick, and I think most of us think they will. What will Vinny do?

A. He will laugh like a jackel.
B. He will crawl out from under the table that Clausen is sitting at, wipe his mouth and say, "No Fair Jimmy should have gone by now!"
C. He will be blowing spit-bubbles on camera.
D. The bug eye s will finally pop out of his head.

Winner's bias isn't about sample size. It's about giving extra weight to winners (or if you prefer, 'survivors') even if the margin of difference was small.

I know I don't have to tell you about the problem with relying on Pro Bowl voting as a measure of player effectiveness.

Williams is athletic but more raw and not the solid run blocker that Okung will be. Y you ask?
Okung is athletic enough to zone block in the NFL and has shown more discipline in learning and executing blocking schemes which require him to take on more that one player over the course of a play; Williams has relied on his athleticism exclusively (and y not?) in college which will not be nearly as easy in the pro's. Zone blocking is like covering an area on the field which moves to accomodate the direction the play is designed to lead the HB, Okung is considered better an more inclined to think quickly on his feet by scouts (espn.com scouting report)and is therefore rated more valuable to the skins and shanny.

Minor but important difference.

Wins are indisputably objective. Pro-bowls are not.

And sometimes, all you need is a small difference for divergent outcomes.

A lot comes down to how you rank lines. For instance, using FO's DVOA system, the Colts were 1st in pass protection and 25th in rushing effectiveness. The Dolphins were first in rushing and 18th in pass protection. So which is the better offensive line? The Colts finished ahead of Miami, so were they better blockers?

The Skins, of course, were bad all around. But were they worse than San Francisco, which finished 32nd in the run measures and 25th in pass protection? The 49ers had a better record than the Skins.

You had to wonder why SF wanted to sign its FA blockers (as did Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan).

Lets say Skins can't trade down, which means they take Okung or Williams (or even Berry ... free safety IS a need) ... then don't pick again till the 5th round ... does this mean we just wait for other teams to shed offensive linemen from their rosters? Or do we have to believe that the guys on the roster really can be "coached up" in the post-Joe Bugel era?

At this point we pretty much have to take a highly-rate OT. We have two definite starting caliber OL's and perhaps some up-and-coming backups, we have no choice but to take a LT. There is no one we can count on to be reliable at that spot and very few LT's hit the FA market who are anything like okung. Even with him we are still very iffy on the RT and RG spots, even if someone steps up what happens if they get hurt?
If we get Okung, use campbell to get us a RT/RG, and find a FS in FA, that will one of the best scenarios we can hope for out of this draft/fa class.

Unrelated: Again, is the 3-4 in 2010 our best bet?

Posted by: monkeymayonaise | April 13, 2010 4:43 PM | Report abuse

It's organizational stability. It probably wouldn't matter if we drafted an OT the last 10 drafts, without a solid drafting methodology and/or team principles, we would still have the last decade of swapping offensive and defensive philosophies like bodily fluids at Woodstock.

Posted by: mattsoundworld

Not exactly...one could argue that the Texans, among others, have been organizationally stable...just not very good. Not sure how may lineman they drafted over the years. Pick a winning NFL philosophy (meaning not Spurrier), be able to pick talent (draft or FA) for that philosophy better than most, have an owner willing to pay, and hope to get lucky.

Would you expect an expansion team to immediately thrive in a division with the Colts and Titans? Their last 5 seasons have gone 2-14, 6-10, 8-8, 8-8, and 9-7, so the general trend is up. And for reference, the Skins are on their 4th coach in a much weaker division, and our last 5 seasons have been all over the place: 10-6, 5-11, 9-7, 8-8, 4-12.

So even the Texans, competing against model franchises Indy and Tennessee, know that success is not an overnight process.

Winner's bias isn't about sample size. It's about giving extra weight to winners (or if you prefer, 'survivors') even if the margin of difference was small.

Posted by: Samson151

Over 9 years, the Colts, Pats, Steelers and jints were much better than average ... the margin of difference between those teams and the league average was substantial.

fwiw, I said earlier I agree with the concept of winner's bias. But winners bias it really is about small sample sizes.

So we had our chance to get that impact qb in Bradford, but we'll have to settle on McNabb and the 8-8 record or first round playoff loss he brings us to insure we don't draft that high again anytime soon. What a waste of an opportunity.

Has there ever been a quarterback with a porn name?

No Harry "Under the Center" Reems?

No John "Go Long" Holmes?

No Ron "Hit'em in Stride" Jeremy?

No quarterback with a porn name is why most teams suck.

Who cares at this point? We have an eagle rent-a-qb and we won't get a qb of the future unless we get real lucky a la Tom Brady 6th round and the last time I checked, there's only one of them. So we had our chance to get that impact qb in Bradford, but we'll have to settle on McNabb and the 8-8 record or first round playoff loss he brings us to insure we don't draft that high again anytime soon. What a waste of an opportunity.

Maybe a terrorist has switched out his underwear, and he realizes what that lump in the rear really is.

Maybe Michelle Obama has read mrsmoe's book, and is cussing him out for blogging so much.

Was thinking the same thing.

Except I don't know if I'd be "surprised" as much as I'd be a little "pissed".

If Shanny plans to have DM5 for another 6 years - or whatever - I think we can probably hold off on drafting a QB this year.

Of course that also depends on what kind of extension DM5 gets...but whateves, Shallen supposedly has a "plan", right?

Right. The plan is "make it up as we go".

Did the league already announce compensatory picks and I missed it? Does that mean Skins get no extra picks?

All-Pro > Pro Bowl

statistical-based arguments to evaluate talent = power rankings

Posted by: dcsween

Didn't use All Pro because its too small a sample. You'd really like to look at the top group of players each year, not the 'one'. For example, if you looked at All Pro for QBs, you'd probably find Brady and Warner -- and conclude that a high % of top QBs are found in the 6th round or not drafted.

With the signing of Sean Ryan by the Redskins, you can see the handwriting on the wall for Chris Cooley. Coming off an ankle injury, and with the emergence of Fred Davis, the team has a surplus of talent at the position. We're hearing that the Redskins have an agreement in place to trade Cooley to an AFC team, for a 2011 draft pick that could be as high as a 2nd rounder, based on performance.

Posted by: BeantownGreg1

wonder if the Sean Ryan signing indicates less than positive progress in Cooley's fracture? (not that Ryan is near Cooley's caliber as a player).

Most unsettling of Cooley's injury was how it happened.. No contact.. just a reverse double move. No opposing player's weight or restriction involved.

For 2010 it is a stretch and seems to create personnel needs where there weren't any before. Also - why would Haynesworth have to play nose in a 3 - 4, why not DE? He's capable.

Of course we don't have much detail on what Haslett is cooking up. It does feel like the Skins are due for a reversal of fortunes though - a good offense, and a weak defense - and the switch to a 3 - 4 feels iffy in that regard.

In such a rich draft with only 4 picks why waste it on another developmental QB pick? We've invested in Colt....let him be the developmental QB again.. And draft a real need at the 5th or 7th round pick...like OLine. Skins are starting at zero in that dept so, you cant get enough.

If the Saints won the Superbowl without Jammal Brown the whole year, then maybe they will trade him to us. Wouldn't that be splendid.

Posted by: Risa_L | April 13, 2010 7:00 PM | Report abuse

I'm betting claussen at #4 since this team usually does the opposite of what I want.

I'm believing the carter landry to saints because I hate it. That would give us 4 nose tackles, 1 coming off an injury, 1 who doesn't want to play, 1 never was, and jamal brown

So cool I guess I'll be pulling for the saints again, come playoff time.

Claussen won't sit 2 years though, cause the Irish guy (mcNabb) will be gone byebye

Man oh man oh man. Nobody gives Colt Brennan a chance to do anything but carry the water bucket.

Someone is gonna get a darned good quarterback in Jason Campbell. I hope it is the Raiders or the Niners and they take home a Lombardy while the Deadskins sit at home and grow older.

Am figuring that Redskins should focus on drafting someone who might actually be ready to play in 2010 -- and leave the grooming of future prospects to others in the league. While McNabb has shown an admirable willingness to play through injuries, Grossman and Brennan have yet to prove their durability and readiness to handle the load if and when the starter goes down.

Gruden is a bee-atch. Look, if things go right, we may be looking at 9 to 10 wins this year(crazy, I know). We WILL get the defense squared-away by tactfully using the 4-3. I like so much of what shanny has done so far; we NEEDED a real QB .
A year from now nobody will be questioning the wisdom of the McNabb move and the offense will finally look good.

It takes 2 - maybe 3 years to develop a QB.

McNabb should (should) be productive for 4 years (maybe 5).

So why don't we just wait a year or two and spend this years draft picks on players they may actually take the field and contribute before McNabb is done. 4th and 5th round Lineman and LB's should be able to get in the mix - and play ST's.

We need depth.

We have QB's

Shanny doesn't need a new toy this year. He needs players that can contribute.

Yeah, there have been busts but not many.

Okung is most likely going to be a stud for a long time, you can't pass on that guy. I hope they take him if Detroit doesn't screw everything up.

"Hey is the schedule coming out today?"

Don't we face AFC South teams?

Indy, Titans, Texans, and Jags: oh my!

We get A Johnson, D Ryans, M Schaub, P Manning @ Copy, MJ Drew, Del Rio before he's fired, and Vince Young v. McNabb v. C Johnson v. C Portis.

In fact, the Titans v. Skins should be a nice contest: we'll win, and Fisher will shout, "Tampering!!!"

Still, the AFC South presents a nice array of stars and teams.

Ya gotta look forward to the games as the prospect of having a quarterback now who can put the rock up in the air (if he has to) teases and tempts any redskin fan to unhinged glee!

Plus, the one good thing about a 4-12 record is that you get a 'soft schedule' the next season.

So we do have J Zorn to thank--for something positive at least.

That and his absence.

Snead had a first round grade coming into this year, but he had a down year at Ole Miss and is now supposed to be a mid to late round pick. Most thought he should have gone back for his last year of eligibility, but its rumored that he may not have won his job back if he did.

I agree with the cow and dont think the skins should take a qb this draft, but if they do they should take Snead. If he were to go back and have a good season he would be among the qbs projected to go in the first round next season. Skins could get a steal late in the draft.

"I don't think he's worth much -- maybe a fifth-round pick -- but if, say, the Bills or Raiders want to add him to their mix, I'm sure they can have him. Washington would be happy to go forward with Rex Grossman as McNabb's backup if they could get a draft pick for Campbell, who I never believed was any part of Shanahan's long-term plans."

Campbell's value to other teams isn't determined by where he was selected in the draft. His value is based entirely on his play. Based on his play, the Skins should do back-flips if they can get a 5th round pick for him.

You heard it here first......from deep underground in a parking garage not far from the Redskins HQ....Haynesworth will be dealt to Detroit for their 2nd round pick and Shanny will grab Tim Tebow to stash on the bench for the next 2-3 years. Campbell will get us a 5th rounder maybe a fourth (dreaming). Additional O-linemen will be drafted in later rounds to go with Okung.
RELEASE THE HOUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ftiskins1: I think that's reasonable. Though I would prefer to get Terrence Cody in the 2nd, if he falls that far, which is doubtful.

Also, I suspect we might be picking up Trent Williams instead of Okung. Either one is a good choice.
