Brunell and Blaylock

Hey there. Wish I had more time to post but I am trying to stay on top of a lot of stuff.

Anything you want to know about Brunell was covered in the webchat I just did on washingtonpost.com, so the transcript there will have all the info.

Also,. Blaylock will be out 3 weeks with the heel injury after getting a second opinion yesterday, and the idea of an injury settlement seems to appeal to both sides. So if the Skins are looking for depth at RB in about 9 weeks - he can't re-sign here until 6 weeks after he is healthy - and are making a playoff push or just need a back - whatever - he could be back.

I know Al Saunders likes him a lot and he really likes it here.

Okay, gotta run. More phone calls to make.

Cheers.

So, Jason says he has a soft spot for Rock. That's a new one. It puts him between a Rock and a soft spot.

This will make next year's draft a fortunate one for the Skins... Its supposed to be deeper at RB than ever before!

My tale of woe: I am served by a less than stellar rural cable company in the 21132 - no CSNMA and no NFL network. I am also in ravens home territory with occasional black outs of skins games because of the ravens. I thought directv was the answer. Guess again, the blackout still applies, and I still have to get the minimum cable package to get cable modem service. I only gain one game with diretv.

Skippy told me it is a conspiracy, and that Redcoat and Smack are behind it.

CC,

Good one on the draft pick...

I tell ya what though... and I absolutely LOVE Landry... but this team simply cannot afford another top 10 pick next year.

For more than the obvious reason that a higher pick will mean the Skins were better than last year, I hope they aren't in the top 10 for financial reasons as well.

They are already in some cap danger and also have a lot (and I mean a lot) of critical restructures and/or cuts to make next year... not to mention they need to find a bunch of money for Cooley and others to re-sign/sign.

Posted by: farstriker | August 31, 2007 3:07 PM | Report abuse

Diddy,
Not sure if I should take your question seriously or not, but just in case, I'd say the best way to put money on a game is a "friendly" wager with someone you know and trust to pay if he/she loses.
Next, ask around for someone who takes some action.
Last, definitely last, there are thousands of on-line books who will be happy to take your credit card # and book as many bets as you'd like.
Actual opening line is Skins -3, which seems more right, to me anyway.
Skins 13-Dolphins 6, Skins cover.
Wishful thinking?

FEELEY HAS HAND SURGERY

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced that quarterback A.J. Feeley underwent successful hand surgery on Friday to repair a fractured third metacarpal in his left (non-throwing) hand.

The Eagles say that Feeley's status for the regular-season opener won't be disclosed until later in the week. And that means, of course, that the Eagles will say nothing at all about the issue until they line up a veteran who can come in and be the potential game-day backup to Donovan McNabb. If Feeley isn't healthy, the only alternative at the position is rookie Kevin Kolb.

hi my name is flippy, bringing you the up-to-the-minute sports insider news from WU$A9.

I hear that young 4th string Washington QB Mike Brunell may be joining the Seattle Sidewalks pretty soon? That's gotta be a good move for the youngster, as Jordan Parker effectively made the 3rd string place his with his play last night against Jacksonburg.

The word on the street is that Joe "Gibby" Gibbs, CEO and President of the Rebskins negotiated the trade personally. Mike leaves town with a kiss from Gibby,a hat full of memories, a spring in his step, a smile in his heart and a $150M performance bonus.

Details: in an 8-way trade, 3 of which involve the Denver Browncows*, Washington will receive a conditional 12th round pick in 2017 from the Baltimore Orioles, a set of Ginzu steak knives, a bucket and a ball of used nylon string.

* a late clause included in the trade has Washington immediately sending Jason Campbell, Sean "Grim Sweeper" Taylor, Carlos Santana, and Bootsy Clinton to Denver if Campbell completes 5/5 passes in the final preseason game.

Don't jump to conclusions...we don't need a RB. There are always cheap Blaylock types available. Even if we trade Portis next year we'll have Betts, Cartwright and (I assume) Mason. BTW, that guy knows how to run the ball. There's no reason he shouldn't be given a chance to make the team and contribute. This is how good teams build and sustain success, by giving young & cheap guys a chance to succeed.

If the situation with the 8-car is much as you describe, why would Haber even go there? I don't see it as an attempt to drive ratings, and why stir something like this up with Gibbs? This from long-time 'Skins hater Don Banks:

"Redskins fans shouldn't worry too much about Jason Campbell this year. The third-year quarterback looks up to the job of playing the game's most scrutinized position in one of the NFL's most scrutinized markets. Campbell's 5-of-5, 54-yard, one-touchdown passing effort at Jacksonville on his only drive Thursday night was a preview of the good things to come. Not everybody knows a lot about Campbell just yet, but they will."

And, Wyatt, FWIW, he didn't have a single good word to say about Sage Rosenfeld.

Three guys, an Englishman, a Frenchman and an American are out walking along the beach together one day. They come across a lantern and a genie pops out of it. "I will give you each one wish, " says the genie. The American says, "I am a farmer, my dad was a farmer, and my son will also farm. I want the land to be forever fertile in America." With a blink of the genie's eye, 'FOOM' - the land in America was forever made fertile for farming. The Frenchman was amazed, so he said, "I want a wall around France, so that no one can come into our precious country." Again, with a blink of the Genie's eye, 'POOF' - there was a huge wall around France. The Englishman asks, "I'm very curious. Please tell me more about this wall. The Genie explains, "Well, it's about 150 feet high, 50 feet thick and nothing can get in or out." The Englishman says, "Fill it up with water."

It's Kyle Boller all the way to the SuperBowel baby!! :-)

BREAKING NEWS

Leftwich will be released or traded. Gerrad will start the season. From NFL Live on ESP of N NOW.

To add one more post and fill some time:

My daughter was out in our back yard a couple of days ago and the neighbour kids came out.

The eldest girl next door is 6 and she had a couple of boys visiting. The girl next door said "oh you must meet ..., she's my best friend and she's 4".

One of the boys said "well I'm 5!" in that way that kids do when they feel like they're one-up. The neighbour girl then said "yes, but ---'s already an excellent reader, aren't you?" and my daughter said "I sure am!" and beamed.

The poor boy walked away looking crushed.

Score one for the girls!

Well if Leftwich is really gone, that destroys any value for a Brunell trade, although Leftwich carries about a $5M price tag this year.

If they release Leftwich, what will that do to the market for Brunell?

Right. It was like I was still posting as KK, that moron. Here you go, governor:

Leftwich has more upside than Brunell, but greater downside, too. Obviously, with two overaged injury-ravaged ex-Jags on the market, neither one will command much more than the veteran minimum, which is about what each is worth.

So your secret game plan against one of the best run defenses in the NFL is to run at them Greg?

Well I guess they would never think of the Skins doing that I suppose....

By the way it's hard to run at Taylor all the time as he plays in different places in the D, he's not only/always a DE, and he doesn't always rush the passer, that's why he's so hard to get by.

EXIT STAGE LEFTWICH

1010XL Radio in Jacksonville was the first to report (as far as we can tell) that the Jaguars will be cutting or trading quarterback Byron Leftwich.

A league source tells us that the talk among the players is that Leftwich has already been cut.

The team has scheduled a 5:30 p.m. EDT press conference to discuss the situation.

Leftwich was named the 2007 starter way back in February, despite a disappointing 2006 season during which he was either injured or benched or both.

Taking Leftwich's place will be David Garrard. Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that former Jags starter Mark Brunell, currently a reserve in Washington, could be acquired to serve as Garrard's understudy.

First off, per my usual once a month mention of me never getting my prize for winning the Redskins song contest last year, I would like to know if anyone has any connection to Chris Cooley...and if so, please ask him Jason La Canfora has ever at any point given him a DVD called "Heavy Metal Parking Lot", and if so, ask him why he never gave it back.

Second off, I have some predictions for everyone out there:

The Redskins will demolish the Dolphins next Sunday (30-10)

The Redskins will be 11-5 this season, and in the NFC Championship game (against New Orleans).

Clinton Portis will shock everyone including himself and be the league MVP in 2007.

Barno out.

4-12,

I don't agree. Maybe he's trying to say he has a thick skin, but he doesn't have to put down his critics with this "I'm brilliant, They're stupid" comment.

Frankly some of us are stupid and are stupid in our posts, but a lot of us also put up some well-reasoned criticism. We shouldn't be blown off like this.

Also, I don't think Jasno is as thick-skinned as he's trying to present himself here. I've seen him post himself to take on some of his hecklers (and he's usually right) here in the blog. Someone who was thick-skinned -- say, Marc Fisher -- would just ignore it.

I don't understand the FO power structure. So, a hypothetical:

1)Joe wants #8 to stay.

2) The Danny, Cerrato, and Saunders want #8 to go.

Does Joe's decision win the day?

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 31, 2007 6:51 PM | Report abuse

Not that it would ever happen, but send Brunell to J-ville for Leftwich...

And with Leftwich's versatility I could see him being a great option player (ala Kordell Stewart).

That's just my .02

Hail!

SCSkinsFan,
Danny is the boss.
Danny worships Joe (at least for now).
Vinny is Danny's punk.
Al is somebody who runs the offense (works for Joe).
Danny is likely to listen to Joe if he's 100 % committed.
Joe's not quite 100%, because he wants what's best for Mark (he is that nice player, guy).

So Danny is the Decider.

Clear enough?

If not, who knows.

Lisa, Stumptown--

Clayton reported on Sports Center at 6:00 that Jacksonville will be trying to get Brunnell back to backup Gerrard. So, there could be some competition for the old Markster. Or ... a Brunnell/Leftwich trade?

After all, Jacksonville just saw him last night, and they couldn't help but be impressed.

And while we're on the subject, count me in the part o' the tribe that thinks Clinton will have a 1400 to 1500 yard season.
Betts will have at least 600. I base this on 10-12 carries a game, 3.5 to 4 yard average, which is a snap behind this line, given the fact that the man has a 4.3 avg after luggin' the pig 566 times in the chaos and violence that is the NFL.
Given the right circumstances, this is a team with two legitimate 1000 yard rushers.
Find a team with a better one-two punch.
If they're 6 and 6 or better at the end of November, we'll see if Joe is still Joe.

I know I'm way late on this convo, but here's my take on Jack LaCanicholson's beyatch slap to the bloggers.

From the webchat:
"Waldorf, Md.: J-lac, you've been getting hammered a lot by folks on the insider blog recently -- waddup with that?

Jason La Canfora: I don't know, dude, and I honestly don't care.

Some people can't handle the truth I guess."

I think that much like the Colonel in a few good men, Jasno is doing his level best to stay in the Kingdom of Denial.

Nothing written by Mr. LaCanfora, or any other self respecting journalist, should ever be described as the "truth". It's at best a version of facts and interpretation.

Simply stating that unnamed sources and sources close to the team said whatever they said in no way makes it truth. Statements like that are unadulterated journalistic hubris and call into question the integrity of the person making them.

Whatever credibility Jasno earned with me in the past is hanging on by a thread and may simply be leftovers from when he was riding in Howard Bryant's sidecar, which could be where "The Colonel" belongs.

Posted by: Larry Bud | August 31, 2007 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Stumped...

Suisham was consistently kicking off deep (-1, 5, and 1). No field goal attempts. 2 for 2 on pats.

Frost was sort of all over the place..

60, 39, 39(Sam described this punt with, "It looks like he kicked that one with his knee," which got a good chuckle from the booth and me as well)

50, 46, & 53.

I think we can say that the kicking game is in good hands (er, feet).

We should have an excellent special teams performance this year.

Good times.

Larry Bud,
So if Jasno's response said:

"Some people can't handle a version of facts and interpretation based on reports from unnamed sources and sources close to the team. I guess."

That would be better?

Jasno is no homer and he works hard. I guess I don't really understand what the issue is. I consider the blog and chat as separate from the reporting standards associated with print journalism.

I expect more than just reporting here.

I don't know what Jason thinks. I guess he is holding that opinion. I only know that G-Fitz's depth chart still shows Brunell as the #2 guy. The go-to guy if Campbell goes down. According to Fitz'er Gibbs himself approves the chart.

Here's a scenario: Danny and Vinnie the two butt -- errr buddies cook up deals to trade Brunell. Coach Joe nixes them. Rightly so IMHO. If Jason is right he is far more valuable here than a conditional sixth rounder would be. Danny and Vinnie the butt pirates go over Coach Joe's head as they have in the past ...

Coach Joe resigns to stand watch over his grandson.

Just a thought.

Posted by: periculum | August 31, 2007 8:12 PM | Report abuse

If I'm trading Brunell, I sure wouldn't bump him down to #3 on the depth chart.

Would you?

Posted by: Stumped | August 31, 2007 8:17 PM | Report abuse

Look, Stumped, I am not questioning Jasno's work ethic, but, as a guy who once called himself a journalist and teaches journalism now, there are some standards that have to be upheld regardless of the medium. One of which is that you never have the arrogance to believe that you are a purveyor of the truth.

There is an arrogance in that idea that I'm seeing more and more in his writing, especially since he became "the guy".

I'm sure his sources are legit and that his editors would back him up and after all we're not talking about Judy Miller reporting on the war; it's just sports.

That said, objectivity should never be linked to infallability. As soon as you start believeing you know the "truth" is the moment you stop reporting and start preaching.

I really like the fact that Jasno lets his hair down on the blog and voices his opinions, but the piece on Heyer and Pucillo was reported as news not a blog entry and that is after all what started the fire storm.

The answer to your question, incidentally, is yes, it would have been better than saying "truth".

Posted by: Larry Bud | August 31, 2007 8:22 PM | Report abuse

LB,
So, does it boil down to whether you believe Jason's sources or what Joe Gibbs said after the article was printed?

Hence, no Truth or truth.

(just askin)

Man, I can't believe Leftwich got cut. I will always remember him in Marshall's 2002 game against Akron. From Wikipedia:

"He is also remembered for being carried by linemen Steve Scuillo and Steve Perretta, after breaking his shin and returning to the game, down the field on multiple series as he rallied his team to a 17 point comeback against Akron in November 2002."

He showed unbelievable grit in that game. I thought he'd have a great NFL career.

He's only 27 . . . .

Folks,

Given the never-ending discussion on JLC's editorial tendencies (or not), I thought it would be prudent to do a bit of digging on the new beat reporter coming in to share the load.

Jason Reid is a highly respected LA Times beat writer who the WaPo has apparently coveted for some time.

http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlDC/the_revolving_door/post_hires_lats_reid_to_cover_redskins_65564.asp

I did find some interesting background information on JR when he was covering the Dodgers beat:

"Black Dodgers outfielder Milton Bradley took offense to a post game locker room press briefing question from Los Angeles Times Black sports reporter Jason Reid. In response Bradley called Reid an "Uncle Tom" at which point Reid starting shouting at Bradley for such an insult and in front of a group of players and reporters. Reportedly Reid had to be restrained."

New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison will be suspended by the NFL for four games because he admitted to federal investigators that he obtained Human Growth Hormone, sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Harrison had a hearing with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Friday, the sources said. The Patriots could announce the suspension as early as Saturday.

A league spokesman said the NFL had "no comment" about Harrison, who also could not be reached. Efforts to reach the Patriots were unsuccessful.

The admission by Harrison has never been made public but his name was among those known to federal and New York state investigators that conducted a two-year investigation into an Internet pharmaceutical distribution ring for steroids and other performance enhancers such as HGH.

Investigators have discovered several athletes across many sports whose names were linked in the probe. Sources say at least one NFL assistant also has been questioned.

Chris Mortensen is an NFL analyst for ESPN.

What are your thoughts on the Skins final cuts, practice squad members & the Brunell trade rumors? Who are the dark horses?

I haven't had an opportunity to watch them play other than the occassional highlight on ESPN.

The Landry pick continues to grow on me, but I still don't have faith in the D-Line. This is probably it for Wynn, Griffin & Daniels in my opinion.

PFW:

The Bills opened up the cash drawer in free agency, spending $75 million to mend the Achilles' heel of an offense that ranked 30th in the league in yards per game in 2006. But the two additions who received the bulk of the bankroll, OG Derrick Dockery (Washington) and OT Langston Walker (Oakland), have spent most of the preseason justifying the consensus that the Bills overpaid for them.

My picks for who stays:

RB's: CP, LB, Rock, MMason (I sure hope the rook makes it)

FB: Sellers, Beasley

QB's: JC, TC, ARE (carry only two QB's with ARE as backup to the backup) -- JPalmer to PRACTICE squad (or release and pick up someone else from waiver wire)

WR: Moss, ARE, BLloyd, Thrash, Bradford

TE: Cooley, Yoder, probably someone else

Oline: Starters + Wade, Pucillo, Heyer, one other

Dline: Carter, Evans, Daniels, Griffin, Goldston, Montgomery, Wynn, Wilson

LB's: Marcus, LFB, Rocky, Godfrey, Blades, Trucks, Sartz

CB's: SS, Smooty, Carlos, Macklin

S's: Shawn, LL, Prioleau, Fox, Doughty

ST"s: Suisham, Frost, Albright.

I was listening to 980 today. I really don't like Czabe (too smarmy and NEVER a positive word -- he calls it realism). Anyway...

My take on the pre season:
1) Offense: I am very optimistic about JC. If he gets time to throw, we're gonna be good. I hope it doesn't take until week 9 to learn how to run. We are short (literally and figuratively) at WR. That is our weakest spot, unfortunately.

2) Defense: What an improvement! I couldn't be higher on LL (and to be honest I was really bummed when we didn't draft a dlineman). The LB's are MUCH improved and will be top notch. Best safety tandem in the league. I am still very worried about our corners though I think we're better there than last year, especially if SS is healthy.

3) Teams: Kicking, we're going to be solid. Hope Frost is more consistent but he has a leg.

I am relatively optimistic. The first team outplayed each of the opposing teams in all four games, in my estimation. Could NOT say that last year. I worry that CP hasn't played a down. He has had problems adjusting to Gibbs running game in past and hasn't played much in a year, plus may/may not be dinged up.

Overall, I think we will be pleasantly surprised.
