Reche Caldwell Says A Deal With The Skins "looks really good."

Caldwell just told me he had a great visit here and thinks he will sign very shortly. Just waiting on a few details, he said, but he is ready to go.
When I offered "congratulations," he said, "Thanks." And not, "well, we don't have a deal yet," or any of that stuff.

You have to think this guy will be the No. 3 WR at the least fairly soon. I have thought for a long time this will be the last year in Washington for a certain other receiver, and the presence of this guy suddenly gives them a solid starting option beyond Moss and Randle El.

Why is Lloyd such an asshat? Every teammate says he's the most talented receiver out there yet he continues to play like he could give a f.
Hopefully this Caldwell dude is the answer, I don't remember ever seeing him play.

cL, from the vanished thread, nfl.com says Caldwell is 6'0" and 220 lbs. Kind of like jm220 ... only, you know, rc220.

Posted by: dcsween | September 11, 2007 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Before bashing this we should ask ourselves the following:

R) Is he an upgrade over what we have now?
III) Is he the best available receiver?

I think the answers are yes and yes. No one is expecting pro bowl numbers. We just need some kind of production out of our #3 receiver and we are currently not getting any.

You could make the argument for McCardell, but he's like 76 years old. With crazy eyes, theres some potential down the road as well.

Henceforth on this blog, Reche Caldwell will be known as "RC220".

Let it be done!

Don't forget that Caldwell put up those numbers last year against #1 corners. This year he'll be going against #2 or 3 corners.

What's with the two fake Nate posts today? Not me, dudes. It would be sort of an honor if it weren't so creepy. Just come in with the Barney Fife and "this blog stinks" stuff, okay, hater dude?

I've been busy trying to reconcile a new and improved Boren Ultimatum with my plan to, you know, get a little bit of Work done.

He didn't tell "you" that, Jason. He told all of the reports at the same time (since at least 2 other reporters are reporting Caldwell told the entire group of reporters that it "looks really good"). Don't act like you have a scoop gleaned from a private one-on-one conversation with the guy.

Posted by: John | September 11, 2007 2:59 PM | Report abuse

I guess they studied the film and saw Lloyd, Brandon's "effort" on the INT in the end zone, and that was the last straw. No plasma tv for this sjkhole. He should get an old 13" black and white with rabbit ears.

He needs to re-sign with someone right away -- REALLY expensive contact lenses -- specially made from scooped-out jelly fish.

guess that means lloyd should start making some plays on special teams before he has to find a new job. what a BUST!

and i'm excited about wade getting the nod. this makes more sense and wade is definetly good enough to start (as good as jansen or samuels... not really). and this way they can bring in heyer to spell wade and especially samuels who still isn't in 100% game form.

Posted by: jaws | September 11, 2007 3:00 PM | Report abuse

I really don't get this conundrum over WR. We have a dude who works his butt off and runs good routes and blocks downfield and actually catches the ball when you throw it to him -- his name is James Thrash. He's not the fastest wheel on the truck, but he does go round and round.

Throw it to Thrash!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 11, 2007 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Caldwell did nothing against #2 and #3 cornerbacks while he was in San Diego.

Chances are good that we will sign, never catch a pass, get cut in the off-season, sign with the 40ers, and be All Pro next year.

Sign him - Cut Lloyd. Lloyd's a disgrace. He is the poster child for having non-guaranteed contracts although the Skins as usual paid this guy too much in guaranteed bonus money. I think the final straw was the interception this game where he got completely outhustled and just showed no want to whatsoever. Bye!

PS Guarantee Lloyd is dumb enough to blow however millions of dollars he has too. Haha! He's just that type of dude.

As long as we sign the guy for around the minimum, with a minimal signging bonus, I'm definitely cool with Caldwell. I just don't understand what we're going to do with Brandon Lloyd's contract. I guess we could always deactive the guy every week and then "LaVar" him at the end of the season, right? Or should I say "Springs" him now?

Joe in Raleigh, hilarious.

Critical question on Caldewell: is the proper pronunciation of his first name "raysh", "reesh," "ray-shay," "reh-shay," or "anyone other than Brandon Lloyd"?

Dorf - I am not an expert, but I believe that Llyod would count against next year's salary cap. I am not sure where we stand for next year. When I say "where we stand," of course, I mean how far we are over.

I still can't believe we gave up everything we did to trade and sign for Lloyd. Since the offseason of '00 didn't teach them anything, I really hope the 3 critical offseason mistakes of '06 (Lloyd, Duckett, Arch) finally wake these idiots in the FO up.

Nate,

Let's wait to see the numbers on Caldwell. If they gave him something way over the miniumum and/or a big bonus, I will scream about not just using Thrash as well...

Cutting a player results in his unamortized signing bonus being accelerated to the current year.

Translation - The Redskins cannot cut Lloyd because they don't have the cap space to do so.

Posted by: CW | September 11, 2007 3:11 PM | Report abuse

Yeah Ricky Bobbie,

This Springs' situation could be "strange" like LaVArr's, but as we learned with LaVArr you never know what's going on behind the scenes. Remember with LaVArr it turned out he barely knew the team had a defensive playbook. I was dying to know why Springs did not play more as Smoot and Rogers were being picked apart underneath. Well now we know Gibbs and Springs aren't on the same page as far as his "health" is concerned. Weird!

What happened to Smoot? I remember his 2nd/3rd yr, I thought he outplayed Champ Bailey and, of course, he was getting more balls thrown his way too.

How many seasons does Lloyd have to be a skin without it hurting so much?

Posted by: Hi | September 11, 2007 3:13 PM | Report abuse

He received a 10 Mil signing bonus. If he gets cut now, the magority will spill over into next year, but we don't have enough cap room this year to asorb the '07 hit. Or we have just enough cap room and we won't be able to sign players as others get injured during the season if we cut #85........

Posted by: 4th | September 11, 2007 3:13 PM | Report abuse

Nate, Madden (if I'm remembering this right) pronounced it RESH-ay. I pronounce it R-E-L-I-E-F.

Posted by: dcsween | September 11, 2007 3:13 PM | Report abuse

I don't see any pressing need to cut Lloyd, especially if it has grievous cap implications for next season.

Hate to give up on a guy after one season plus one week, however historically bad he's been in that span.

Let Lloyd, Reche and Thrash duke it out for #3 and #4 WR, and eventually work in this speedy Bodiford kid for a few snaps here in there. Lloyd can be active or inactive week to week, whatever.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 11, 2007 3:14 PM | Report abuse

Lloyd had his chance. Kick him out and the rest of team will applaud. This Skins play hard and there is nothing worse than seeing a play where 10 guys bust their butts and the 11th guy doesn't care. Cut Lloyd -- or have Chris Samuels could beat the crap out of him and put Lloyd on IR if you can't afford the cap hit. Getting rid of Lloyd is addition by subtraction.

At the start of the season, we had a number 1 in Santana, a 3 in Randle El and a 4 in Thrash. But no number 2 because Lloyd is a nothing. Randle El stepped up and we have a 2. So a 3 is what we need and Caldwell seems reasonable. Especially since the guy has something to prove

I expect lloyd, brandon to be cut in March of '08, as a post-June 1 designee. The majority of his dead cap hit will be in the '09 season that way.

'SKINS EYEBALLING CALDWELL

Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post reports that the Redskins are visiting with free-agent receiver Reche Caldwell.

Caldwell led the Patriots in receptions and yardage in 2006. He was cut on September 3.

Because Caldwell is a vested veteran, teams likely waited to court him until after Week One. Any vested veteran who is on a team's opening-day roster can elect to take the remainder of his base salary as termination pay.

Wow. That was quick....

Somebody must have emailed them...

If anything this will give BL a kick in the nuts that he has to produce or he's gone. It's kind of like what they did with the corners to get more production out of them. With BL looking over his shoulder this might be the one thing that will jumpstart him into the kind of WR he can be.

Send Lloyd home. Guys like that hurt the team just by being around.

While Thrash is a great team guy, he is just not effective as a receiver anymore. So we do need a number 3.

In the offseason, I wrote that resigning Thrash and Jansen to their deals was a case of the Skins spending too much on guys past their prime. Their contracts were too long and expensive.

Hope the Caldwell offer is rational though ... I'm guessing the Skins aren't the only interested party

Why is everybody so excited about Reche Caldwell? He's not that good. Exhibit A: He's unemployed more than a two weeks after being cut. Exhibit A1: his career numbers. Exhbit B: Two dropped TDs in AFC championship game. Last season was a fluke. He was "best" receiver on a team where if you're remotely open the QB will hit you.

Regarding Springs: You too would be pissed if you prepared all week for a project at work and as you're about to go in and give your presentation the boss comes up and, without any explanation, says we're going to let Fred do it. This is some more of Dan's "big screen" SJK. Even Stevie Wonder can see that.

Caldwell is a little above average all around which makes him our #2 in a few weeks time. The one thing he does have is loads of heart which instantly puts him ahead of he-who's-name-should-never-be-metioned-again-in-the-same-sentance-as Redskin. Once he was a huge talent, but hasn't been the same since a bad knee injury a few years ago. Above average upfield speed, good routes, decent hands, and he caught more passes than anyone on our team last year. He is definitely the best FA WR out there available.

I liked Mcardell, but this is the right move. Too bad we can't pick up two and dump the bum we have, but that was the good old days pre-salary cap.
