Camp storylines: No. 8 Safety

With Redskins training camp opening Thursday afternoon, this week on Redskins Insider we'll countdown the most pressing issues the team faces as players prepare to report.

Will Reed Doughty, Chris Horton or Kareem Moore start at safety?

Horton struggled in coverage early last season after a surprising rookie year in 2008. He was benched and placed on season-ending injured reserve in November because of a toe injury. Doughty was effective despite playing with a broken bone in his hand and Moore had mixed results in limited opportunities to prove himself.

Prediction: Doughty is among the smartest guys on the team and typically has been steady while adjusting to the 3-4. He will team with LaRon Landry at safety in the starting lineup. Moore is expected to push for more playing time and could move ahead of Horton on the depth chart.

Much as I like Horton, I think Doughty fits the mold of a FS a little better even though the line between FS and SS are blurred in a 3-4.

on 'Lo vs Carter playing OLB in the 3-4. Its just fortunate for us that these guys won't need to cover any of the top TEs or quick RBs this season. Oh wait ...

I was thinkin' Doughty, too. But then I realized he would be touring in support of his latest American Idol release... wait... that's not right...

Oh, Moore for the athleticism...

.. then again, ya never know...

more of a general observation... what's most interesting to me is that there is so much uncertainty regarding various positions headed into training camp.

in part, that's a function of a new coaching staff... but we've been through numerous coaching changes over the years, and I don't remember this level of competition across the board.

although it could also reflect a lack of clear-cut standout talent (with a few exceptions, like starting QB), my interpretation is that this seems like a good sign.

I'm curious to see how many defensive starters remain and how many spots the team will hold for the front seven.

funny, to me the safety issue is not the SS, its Landry. He's the major talent back there, but will he ever learn the position?

I was kidding about the white thing.

What I do like about Reed though is his hustle.

When the season was lost last year, dude still played like it was the playoffs. Reed and Fletch always give 110%.

He's no Ed Reed, but he's definitely important to the team.

Posted by: iH8dallas | July 26, 2010 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Nothing for a week and then 3 posts off the bat...does that make up for lost time or are the hamsters further frustrated by back-to-back-to-back posts that interrupt the comments?

Anyways, I think LaRon Landry is as much a question mark as the other guys at safety. Is he going to find some kind of consistent form?

Contrary to popular sentiment/desire, he will NOT be taking on a traditional around-the-box strong safety role.

He's not a Shanahan/Allen pick, so will he get the leeway and grace that Zornratto gave him last year when he became a clear liability in coverage?

Sure, why not.

Only thing that bothers me is the suspension.

Posted by: iH8dallas | July 26, 2010 2:10 PM | Report abuse

Catchup.

Santana Moss has to be the man this year. With a veteran hurler he will get plenty of chances and his deep threat has now re-opened; helping his short routes in the process. I hope DM/SM hookup early in the season on some long balls, best game Dallas.

OLB- I don't like any of your choices for OLB. Alexander and Carter, neither can cover guys downfield and rushing them everytime kind of tips our hat, doesnt' it? I like Carter to play a DE spot and maybe nose tackle in passing situations. Alexander will be another great sub/replacement lineman, playing all spots. I don't like these guys at Lb. What happened to Rocky?

Is Chris Horton healthy? If so, he will be the starter. I'm not sold on Landry having a spot secured. I'm still having bite issues with last years NO's game, as well as, other issues. I thought this 3-4 defense let each safety play both Free and Strong positions, maybe Reed and Chris are suited best for versatility. LaRon too, don't get me wrong this guy is a great talent and has great speed - but the over bite at safely is killer. Take that away and the bulldozing size down at the goal line and LaRon is one of the best. Well...maybe take away stupid penalties, too. But that issue lies with Horton, as well. Agreesive players will have these type issues, but veterans should get over it and I consider both veterans now. Its time to step up and make a NFL name for yourself. (best in the league, not conference - this will take several great years to do, so start this year)

If LaRon is in, then I'm guessing a healthy Horton beside him. That guy can play.

Posted by: Rando | July 26, 2010 2:13 PM | Report abuse

it's new regime. Doughty is solid but he does not make plays. it may not seem like a lot, but i think Doughty and Horton may be gone after this season. They'll need more speed out of the position.

Since we have about 100 strong safeties on the team, why not move one of our corners to FS?

I know it's been brought up alot, but DHall really likes to chase the ball.

His tackling would be a problem, but he could pick off 10 passes from that spot...EASY

Ugh.

I call that a lose-lose situation.

I don't want to pay VJax what he's asking b/c I don't think he is a truly elite NFL receiver and he wants to get paid like one; plus there are clearly some issues there what with the holdout and suspension.

I don't think MK12 solves any WR issues for San Diego. What does he offer them?? At this point, they are just as good off by finding some UFA or a cheap FA receiver. MK12 has done nothing to show he can play in the NFL which makes his trade value nil.

I'd love to unload CR22, but for a draft pick - not for an expensive WR who is not a game-breaking playmaker and has suspension issues.

As I understand it, LL is the fastest of the bunch so the key to an improved secondary this year will be if LL can finally learn to keep his instincts to attack in check and remain in position deep when necessary.. this may require better play in front of him by KM, RD or CH. All three have shown flashes of having an inner Troy P. but none have been particularly consistent. Finally, LL has to be a better and more consisten hitter with fewer whiffs when going for the knock-out.

Hit the nail on the head. Though we all asked that about Sean Taylor a bit too. Though he had so much talent that he could screw up once in a while and still win a game.

Camp Storylines: Safety

In the Skins new D, Haslett will most likely gamble and start Kareem Moore in centerfield. LaRon Landry, with more speed than any safety in the NFL, should have long ago emerged as a playmaker at that spot, but he has iffy awareness (translation: he's thick as a brick). At least to start off, Landry is set to be used more as an attacker in the box in Haslett's new schemes. But should Moore struggle, Landry would probably move back to free safety, allowing either Doughty or Horton to regain a starting job. Doughty and Horton have big-hit prowess, but both tend to play with bad angles in space (think Adam Archuletta).

I agree the contract he wants is high but I think he will be worth it.

He can be paired with mcnabb n our next drafted rb for 5 yrs.

Our offense rebuild has the main building blocks.

Remember, nxt year moss is gone n we need help there already

Mk would be offered up as jacksons replacemnt n save us a draft pick.

Our wrs would be jackson n thomas wide, moss in the slot

I didn't say he was a Zornratto pick...he was a Cerratto pick, and Zorn wasn't allowed to call plays, make subs or pick his nose without Cerrato's permission.

The point is that he is not this regime's high pick and they have no vested loyalty to him.

But you're mistaken if you think Landry will return to his "natural" position. In this scheme, the safeties are interchangeable. He'll play more traditional strong safety than last year, but he's still going to need to know/play free safety.

Posted by: p1funk | July 26, 2010 2:34 PM | Report abuse

I think by interchangeable Haslett means that they will disguise coverages, rather than having LL sitting back there ready to blow it.

This article is WRONG. Kareem Moore is actually starting opposite of Landry right now and it's his position to lose at this point. It is also necessary to note that according to Jim Haslett there isn't a strong and free safety in this defense. Only a left and a right and both will play in the box and in coverage depending on the play.

Reed Doughty even being on this team-Ugh!

He can't tackle and his instincts are poor. Doughty is always running up to play as the tackle is being made.
He doesn't cause turnovers and has made no impact plays during his time here. I disagree that he's slow, that's not it-he's sorry.

He can't tackle and he can't cover, and mark my words, he will be exposed time after time this season because every team will set him up for the "big hit" and then when he bites they'll go long on him at their whim. If armchairGM did try to run him over Reed would not only get his license plate number but he would also have the color, make, and model of his car along with the the average speed. RD is one of the good guys, save your hatered from Haynesworth.

Why should Laundry start?
Cornerback Philip Buchanon and Safety Kareem Moore are probably the best 2 for the jobs.
Stop, 4th quarter saying about Laundry:
"What's he doing way over there?"

Posted by: CTaylor42 | July 26, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

As much as I love Reed and Horton they are not great coverage safeties. If we are going to have Landry on the field we need a safety out there that can cover his tooshie in coverage because Landry struggles in space. Actually all of our safties struggle in space but Kareem Moore. I've read on redskins.com that Moore and Reed are neck and neck.... I think a slight edge lately might go to Moore right now, it went to Reed earlier. If Moore just proves that he can cover better than they other two he should get the job. Lets face it in the last regime Landry was always viewed as the guy who would take over after Sean's death and lead the secondary, Reed was the incumbent who was always solid and was the vet who did the right thing always and didn't make mistakes, then we had the two young guys.... Moore the 6th round pick and Horton the 7th round pick. Moore was injured with a knee injury in the offseason which set him behind Horton. Horton played well in the 1st hall of fame game vs the colts and it gave him the inside track, he had a great rookie campaign. Moore was always 1 step behind from the get go because of the injury and Landry was the incumbent at FS... Moore's postion. Now though, Landry has failed at FS and it is Moore's turn to seize the FS or position opposite Landry because he is our best cover safety. So I'm for Moore in short! lol

Posted by: avbanig | July 26, 2010 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Why are we assuming LeRon Landry is the starter? He was our worst player on defense by far last year. He is always out of position, misses more tackles than anyone, and can't cover. Shanahan will see this and fix it.
