Campbell Starts Strong

After answering questions all week long about his 1-for-7 passing performance in last weekend's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, quarterback Jason Campbell came out on his first drive and initially seemed to quickly quiet the critics.

Campbell was a perfect 4 for 4 on Washington's opening scoring drive, spreading the ball around the field and finding three different receivers to guide the Redskins down to the one-yard line, where running back Marcus Mason punched it in for a touchdown.

The Redskins' fifth-year quarterback had completions of 11, 21, 14, and 7 yards on the opening drive, and second-year receiver Malcolm Kelly drew a pass interference in the end zone to set up the touchdown.

But a missed opportunity on the second drive might have erased any goodwill that Campbell's initial production created.

Campbell overthrew a wide open Santana Moss down the left sideline on the Redskins' first play of their second drive, inexcusably missing Moss, who was streaking alone in front of a Patriots cornerback with nothing but green in front of him.

The incompletion may have temporarily shaken the confidence of Campbell - and the offense. The play was the start to three consecutive three-and-outs, and Campbell threw incompletions on four of his next five attempts after the overthrow.

Before the end of the half, however, Campbell responded, leading two scoring drives.
The first was sparked on a third-and-9 from the Redskins own 10-yard line, when Campbell found Moss across the middle for 11 yards. On the next play, he showed nice touch on a pass to Chris Cooley, who rumbled down the sideline for a 73-yard gain.

Facing third and goal from the 4, Campbell scrambled left, and his pump fake got New England linebacker Paris Lenon to jump, allowing Campbell to easily jog in for a touchdown to pull Washington within three.

In a two-minute drill at the end of the half, Campbell completed 4 of 6 passes to set up Dave Rayner's field goal that tied the game at the half.

Another way to keep Mason:

Cut Brennan and put Chase Daniel on the Practice Squad. With ARE, 2 QBs are enough.

Marko probably made the team w/ blocking on the cooley pass, Campbell looked solid Line looked ok MOSS is AWESOME, Cartright may be in trouble, Thomas looked good on returns. Feel bad for colt too but they were almost waiting for that play, looks like a tough throw for a side armer, but I played line (average at best) so I don't know.

The above comments are that of the poster and should in no way be confused with those from a sane person

Rock is excess to requirements.

Mason appears to bring everything to the table that Rock does, but has more upside and will cost less; and DT11 is going to be a better KR that Rock.

Campbell's overthrow to Moss is not that bad. He knew he was about to be hit and he fell back - and in order to compensate, he put more on the ball. If he is given more time, and he has more attempts at that - we will see a good share of long catches.

I am not a Campbell hater. First of all, you can't "hate" anyone on this team and call yourself a "fan".

I think they're Campbell doubters. And regardless what the "hunky dory Campbell" fans would like to believe, his play for his entire career has been shaky. But if he carries this over for a 16 game regular season stretch, then I'll take my Crow rotisserie style with BBQ sauce.

I would look froward to eating that bird, no doubt!

I see Colt's trying to get me started on eating that crow tonight! Damn, Colt... nice throw and nice catch by the homie Marko!

Red,

I want Mason to make it ova Betts, but Synder won't cut his losses for better people, i don't believe.

I forgot to put a question mark following 'Alridge..?' I jus want y'all opinion on him cuz I mentioned him earlier and this was the first chance we got to see him.

Not sure if Mason is eligible for the practice squad? But Alridge is and that is prolly where I'd prefer him; when Betts gets hurt during the season, we should sign Mason, if available, otherwise keep Alridge for HB speed purposes.

Sorry, didn't mean to go on a Madden-like elaborate explanation, but I'm gonna miss the guy.

Alridge is going to be the man.

The overthrow to Moss made me want to punch my dog in the face, and I don't even own one. If they run that kind offense all season long, Campbell will become more consistent with the long bizzal. You heard it here first.

Marko should be ahead of DT and behind MK on the depth chart. WORD EM UP!

Campbell looked good (as I knew he would, I'm not a hater). Offense looked good. Defense looked good. Special Teams sucks for allowing big returns (the one that led to the last FG). Cut Suisham for not being able to kick the ball against the broad side of a sky scraper, and get someone that can nail those 50+ yd. FG every time. Any kicker would be an upgrade over Suisham and Rayner. I fault VC for not going after FA Rookie K Gano. Or at least give him a shot, he might have surplanted all our K.
