Cards' D Line Overlooked, Underrated

The Cards' front 7 doesn't get enough respect (insert lame Rodney joke here). Its ability to overpower the Skins' O line, or its inability, could be the difference. You watch these guys and find yourself confused as to what they are running, and they have plenty of athletes and playmakers. DT Darnell Dockett (Burtonsville, Md.) is a handful, a legit pass-rushing force from the nose spot. They have all kinds of guys on the edge who can easily alternate between a DE or OLB (LaBoy, Okeafor, and though their depth chart would list them as a 4-3 team, they have plenty of LBs who have a 3-4 background.

They can toggle from one scheme to the other (3-4/4-3) with seeming ease, and LB Karlos Dansby and SS Adrian Wilson are elite talents. They want to attack the QB and have the components to do it. Coach Jim Zorn watched the team come together during his seven years in Seattle - in the NFC West with the Cards - and believe the have great athletes all across the board now, and all are playing as one.

Pro Bowl LT Chris Samuels, who has been around a long time and seen it all, said he had to do more film study than usual this week just trying to get a handle on the Cards D. It has continued to evolve in recent years, adding dimensions even from last season when these teams played.

"There's definitely a little more work put in to studying these guys," Samuels said. "They show a lot of different fronts. The guy might be a defensive end, but he's standing up, so you can get him confused as a linebacker. So you've got to study the personnel and their tendencies and what they like to do."

Samuels won't be lined up over Dockett, but praised his abilities: "I think he's a heck of a pass rusher. He's quick off the ball. Once the ball is snapped, wherever he's going, he's right there. He's going to get there in a hurry. If you can stop that then you'll have a chance to block him."

If the Cards get you to shade the protection too much inside for Dockett, then they can exploit you off the edge. "You have to be patient with these guys as well, because they are going to show you a lot of different front, they're going to fly around and they're going to do a lot of stunting on the defensive line. You have to try to get a piece and grab these guys and lock them up."

Zorn gushed about Dockett. He thinks the dude is an absolute stud. "He's so quick, you can't hardly get a double team on him," Zorn said. "He bursts, he bullrushes, he moves and grabs and pulls. He runs down the line. He's relentless. He' a very good football player ... This guys is really good from sideline to sideline and he can run down the field and chase things down."

Zorn believes that Travis LaBoy (who is listed as a right DE but generally lines up more upright, without a hand on the ground), and LB Chike Okeafor, who is listed as a LB but plays like a DE, act as key devices to throw off offenses.

"LaBoy, he is the defensive end, but he plays in a two-point stance, that's the only difference," Zorn said. "They list him as a defensive end; he is a defensive end. What's kind of funny is when you read it's Chike Okeafor. What he does it he is listed at is a linebacker. He has always been a defensive end, and he's been probably the most versatile guy in the (defense). But they've always played that other end in a two-point stance, so they can drop him (back in coverage) in a fire zone (blitz) or rush him. And LaBoy is a very good pass rusher. He's crafty, he's compact, he can change direction very well, He's a very impressive guy. He's going to have a good year."

I have a question not related to this post...what was up with Portis on sportscenter last night, I fell asleep before they could get to it? He apparently was talking a bout a former teammate???

Solution: Warm up Portis and Betts.

The 49ers gained over 100 rushing yards despite losing 6 turnovers.

Jimmy, I believe they were covering the on air squabble (cool word) between Portis and Brian Mitchell on the John Thompson show.

Even Coach Zorn sees what's going to happen Sunday. Warner throws for over 300 yards, 4 TD's with only 1 pick and 2 sacks. Jason throws for 156 yards (60 of those being garbage yards at the end of the game), with 3 picks and 3 sacks. Portis gets 75 yards on 20 carries, and the Cards leave with a 38-10 win...

Before you declare the game over, KC, remember the QBs you've faced so far have a cumulative 8 NFL starts among them last year.

You aren't going to get Miami every week, I'm afraid to say.

Nothing about the Cardinals is underrated. Every year they hype this team up as the dark horse, and every year they do nothing but go out to pasture.

F the Cardinals, they suck. Always will, always have.

True that. But if I remember right, you barely squeaked one out at home against the fins last year, and we showed how you deal with inferior teams like that. I agree you're a step up in the competition level, but you're no NY Giants, or Patriots, Colts, Packers, Broncos or Eagles either. You're sort of a Seattle-lite.

Yes Matts.... if you read the bottom of the main page where it lists every week, you see the authors comments.

NFL has two games on one network and one on the other every week. This and last was Fox having one. But you should get one game on fox, either the 1 or 4. You seem to be getting the NO denver game for some reason.

What a great post we have given up 3 sacks in two games, one of those games being against the Giants, but we do not have the blocking down.

We have also rushed for 233 yards in two games 4.2 yards per carry which could be better but is still good.

JC had over 300 yards last week, the sack in the Giants game was on him not the O-Line.

I would say we have the blocking scheme down better then most teams in the NFL.

Maybe AZ should be worried about there blocking schemes they have given up 5 sacks in two games against college teams.

I don't know if it was posted already, but here's PFT on Vinny's radio gig (they had quotes from JLC's post on the subject yesterday, but I cut all that crap out since we've already read it):

"But we’re not so sure that this will be such a huge distraction. Cerrato has a staff working for him. How much time on Monday morning does Cerrato spend grinding away at studying film and chasing free agents? In a league where more than a few people like to perpetuate the notion that their passion for the game prompts them to work 20 hours per day, who’s to say that the Redskins haven’t found a way to properly staff the operation, and likewise to do their work efficiently and confidently?

Then again, if the team struggles, the perception that Cerrato isn’t working as hard as his counterparts in other cities will definitely make his non-football duties a lightning rod for fans and media who’ll wonder whether enough is being done to make the team as good as it can be.

But at least that will make for good radio."

PFT has 2 more posts on Vinny:

MORE ON THE CERRATO VENTURE
Posted by Mike Florio on September 19, 2008, 9:44 a.m.
In response to the item we posted a little while ago regarding the radio show of Redskins Executive V.P. Vinny Cerrato, an unnamed league exec has echoed the criticism of the move that was shared with Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post by another unnamed league exec.

“I like Vinny,” the source said. “He’s a great guy. But that is the most asinine thing I’ve ever heard. You cannot possibly do the G.M. job adequately when you are holed up for two hours twice a week during the season doing radio.

“Why not just change the time of the show from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and go on from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.? To do it during the business day, and even worse, the morning after the game is irresponsible and unprecedented. I can’t imagine this is really going to happen.”

So there you go. It’ll be interesting to see whether Cerrato addresses the issue of his overall time demands in his debut show.

CERRATO SAYS HE HAS THE TIME TO DO RADIO
Posted by Mike Florio on September 19, 2008, 10:11 a.m.
At the top of the debut of his twice-per-week radio show, Redskins Executive V.P. Vinny Cerrato defended his decision to spend four hours per week behind a microphone instead of at his desk.

“I do have the time right now,” Cerrato said.

He explained that Bruce Gilbert and Mark Shapiro first suggested the idea last week. And Cerrato insisted that if the show would interfere in any way with his Redskins’ duties, he wouldn’t have done it.

Of course, this explanation might prompt critics to wonder what in the heck Cerrato has been doing with his time, if he truly has 240 spare minutes to sacrifice during business hours on Mondays and Fridays within football season.

It starts in about 15 minutes, and you can listen right here.

****Quick fantasy advice question. This is not for the RI League (the first and preferred one.)

Have Randy Moss, been offered Willie Parker. Do you do the deal?

Brown,

I do not think a NFL GM has regular buisness hours, 24/7 job I am sure we will not miss the next FA because of this.

I am not saying that to you Brown, just commenting on the PFT article.

kman,

He explained how the deal went down he was not the one in charge, Gibbs was so call Gibbs an idiot.

Sorry for the false accusation there Cville.......my bad.

For this post, let's hope out healthy OL plays a little better against the Cards D. They definintley have some studs....I remember that Nose Tackle Dockett having a GREAT game against us last year. Guys a beast.

Lets also hope that this past week puts a little chip on CP's shoulder. I know the guys balls 110% on every play anyhow, but add a a litlle extra incentive to show up BMitch and any other skeptics, and he could blow it up on Sunday. Let's hope, anyway.

"Of course, this explanation might prompt critics to wonder what in the heck Cerrato has been doing with his time, if he truly has 240 spare minutes to sacrifice during business hours on Mondays and Fridays within football season."

Couldn't have said it better myself. This is beyond a joke. I'm really glad Cerrato is putting in his due diligence when we only have 3 WRs that may be active this week, one of which has been repeatedly criticized by the head coach for not being up to speed.

Uh oh Larry Michaels now another guy is using sources this whole source thing is spreading like a plague...

That dude was talking about the "source meter" last night. Could you be a bigger narcissistic chooch? I think not...

He was saying that he never mentions the "Sorcerer" by name and the Sorcerer mentioned him by name in his post. Dude it's called being a man and calling people out? Who raised you to think that calling out people using nicknames was actually a good thing?

Who are your RB's currently.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 19, 2008 10:31 AM | Report abuse

Smack it depends what you need and who you have. Parker has had a good year this year so far but is injury prone. Moss' value is greatly diminished by the injury to Brady however.

Everything being equal, don't give up on Randy Dandy.

However, if you're loaded at WR and struggling at RB, then it's not a terrible trade. I guess it depends on your situation.

A proud franchise = 3 superbowl wins, 5 NFC titles, a hall of fame coach + numerous hall of fame players

A wannabe proud franchise = no superbowls, inability to sell out home games, biggest accomplishments are non-losing seasons (8-8! Yay!) the Bidwills (enough said), and being the cellar dwellers that we all know and love you for. Man, I miss getting free wins from the Cards back when they were in the NFC Beast...

PSP,

I am sure this is the only time he could do that, stop jumping on what everybody else is saying. The coach will ask for a receiver if he needs one, he seems to be staying with the rookies and playing them more.

you guys always get mad when we jump to sign FA's instead of playing younger guys, now they are doing it and it is wrong.

kost--Thanks for keeping me up with me brother's doing. You got him!

I think you can make deals and what not at any time, they just can't make any signing or trade official unless it's done during business hours. You know, the paperwork and so forth. I think that's what they're getting at.

I love the guys at PFT, but I would take the word of a couple of GMs over Florio in this regard. At a minimum, Vinny is creating (or furthering) the perception that he's screwing around when he could be working to get this team in position to get a championship.

The receivers will be the same as last week with Devin Thompson getting more play for Thrash. What good would it do to bring in a receiver who does not know the offense now.

That was in the original host, you might have missed it in your blind reactionary white hot anger (I kid...I kid...)

Considering one of them is injured and questionable to play, that only leaves 3 WRs. Even if he plays, 4 WRs is not enough. At the very least Vinny should be scouring the waiver wires, looking at practice squads, inquiring about disgruntled WRs, anything and everything that could possibly help the team. This radio show does nothing to help the team. That's all I care about.

JLC continues to make every team we play look like studs and the Skins look like duds. Let's just look at the 2 most recent opponents; we are better than, always have been better than, and always will be better than, the Saints and the Cardinals. Please, stop the incessant whining you no talent dork.

Does this spell trouble, since we can't seem to get the blocking schemes down real well?

Posted by: PA Skins Fan | September 19, 2008 8:03 AM

What a great post we have given up 3 sacks in two games, one of those games being against the Giants, but we do not have the blocking down.

We have also rushed for 233 yards in two games 4.2 yards per carry which could be better but is still good.

JC had over 300 yards last week, the sack in the Giants game was on him not the O-Line.

I would say we have the blocking scheme down better then most teams in the NFL.

Maybe AZ should be worried about there blocking schemes they have given up 5 sacks in two games against college teams.

Posted by: Flounder | September 19, 2008 8:54 AM
H
ey, Flounder. I would agree with you, but the Giants totally shut down the skins offense with four down lineman. 89 yds rushing in that game and 130 and change passing with a 4.5 average. Something wasn't working right. The Saints game was much better, but they weren't blitzing or doing anything fancy becuase of 3 defensive starters out due to injury. If it gets tricky, I am a little concerned. If JC is supposed to make the calls, but Rabach has to help him, that tells me the blocking schemes and adjustments aren't where they need to be. The numbers from this year do not tell the whole story.

I am hoping for a big win, but I think if the Cards can mix things up on D, the Skins will look more like the skins against the Giants and less like the skins agains the Saints.

Sacks aren't everything when you talk about blocking, there are hurries and messing up the timing of the QB and having him not know what is going on.

Seems to me, you are seeing things through rose colored glasses. I want them to be good too, but they NEED to win this week, and the Cards pass rush is going to be the difference maker one way or the other, in my opinion.
