Carlos Rogers isn't happy with tender

Much to his dismay, cornerback Carlos Rogers received a first-round tender and is not free to walk away from the Redskins as he would prefer.

"I hate it, man," Rogers said tonight in a phone interview. "That's all I'm going to say. I really don't want to say too much right now. But I don't like it."

As a restricted free agent, Rogers would have become unrestricted, enabling him to leave for any team, if Washington declined to tender him. But with the tender offer, the Redskins retain the right of first refusal if another team offers Rogers a contract. Placing a first-round tender on Rogers might dissuade other teams from pursuing the five-year veteran because they would owe the Redskins a first-round pick as compensation for signing him.

"They know they got me for cheap" because of the restriction, Rogers said. "Of course, they're going to use it. They're going to use what they got to keep me here cheap. If you want me there, you could show me. Tendering me is not showing me.

"That's just making it harder for a team to not come get me. I mean, I think they're going to use all their money on the unrestricted guys. That's what I'm hearing. That's just, you know ... there's nothing I can do about it anyway."

Rogers is among more than 200 players who would have been unrestricted if next season were capped. "It's hard, man, because a lot of guys are in this same situation," Rogers said. "You want to do something about it but you can't."

Rogers also is frustrated about the likelihood of returning to the Redskins because of the dysfunctional nature of the franchise during his time there, he said. "I've seen guys come and go who have been doing it for our team," Rogers said. "And our chemistry just hasn't been there because we just let them guys go that been the core of our team.

"I guess there's nothing I can do about it. I guess we just have to show up whatever the day is for us to show up or whatever it is. But I don't like it, personally. And it's not just me. It's a whole bunch of guys who feel that way."

1st to say get rid of Carlos "can't catch" Rogers, trade him for a thrid rounder or fouth round draft pick and let him go drop INTs somewhere else.

Both JC and Carlos had 5 years to get their contract extended. They are being tendered at these level based on their play instead of being offered contract extensions based on their play on the field.

Guys had plenty of time to step up their game and did not. Just keep your mouth shut and do your talking on the field.

But he does have a point about the UFA's getting paid. That's what happens when you pay one dude $100 mil and the other $2 mil. It breeds jealousy, resentment, and insurrection.

Aw, I'm so sorry for you not getting your way and making a salary 100 times larger than mine.

Look, Carlos and the others, if you didn't know this was coming, then you need to pay more attention. This is payback from the owners. Your union wants more than the owners can or want to give. This is the result of not getting a new deal in place.

Suck it up. There's a new regime, you might find the experience different.

The other part these players need to keep in mind is that if they do not tender these guys by tomorrow, then the players become UFAs. How does that make sense to the team?

Because a player gets a tender does not mean that a contract cannot be offered, it just gives the team more room to work on these contracts.

Posted by: Curzon417 | March 3, 2010 7:25 PM | Report abuse

What's the deal on Kirk Morrison? The Raiders are practically giving him away.

Posted by: TWISI | March 3, 2010 7:08 PM

I read that. They are hoping someone offers a contract for him by giving him the lowest tender and only asking for a 3rd rd pick. Funny how Rocky who received the 3rd tender and has never had more than 95 tackles feels disrespected while Morrison has lead the Raider in tackles the last 5 years received the lowest tender. What Rocky doesn’t understand is that the skins did him a favor by giving him the 3rd level tender and could have given him the lowest tender and would be entitled to the same compensation. I’d trade Morrison for Rocky.

Redskins give Campbell first-round tender

Quarterback Jason Campbell has received a first-round tender from the Redskins.

Although Coach Mike Shanahan has said he expects Campbell "to be here" this season, he has not committed to him as the starter.

Shanahan expects Campbell "to be here," Jason Reid and Rick Maese reported last week from the scouting combine in Indianapolis and he has "big admiration for Jason and how he's handled himself through some very tough situations with a beat-up offensive line and the way he's handled himself as a quarterback."

The first-round tender means that any team can sign Campbell to an offer sheet and the Redskins would have seven days in which to match the offer or receive the team's first-round draft pick in return for him.

Monetarily, a team would have to match roughly $3.1 million in salary, a figure that is 110 percent of Campbell's base salary.

DO expect to be worked like you haven't been yet, NEW SHERIFF DO expect no sympathy from the fans for your terrible plight, they are struggling to keep their homes, much less support your sorry asses. A few million sounds damn good to me to lose steadily for years - get over yourselves, you have accomplished NOTHING in your sorry careers.
Do expect the fans to support the NEW SHERIFF and HIS POSSE as he slowly but surely runs anyone out of town who is not with the program from DAY ONE.

Agreed. The funny part is that Rocky, Los or any of the other RFAs didn't see this coming. These guys all want long-term deals with signing bonuses and during an uncapped year, it's not going to happen because their rights are controlled by the team. These guys have a chance to earn the contract if they play lights out this year or they will be free to walk and see what the open market pays them.

It's truly discouraging to see just how stupid some of these guys are.

It seems to me that what the Redskins are telling Carlos is that "with this tender we would be thrilled if some other sucker picks you up and we get a second round pick for you. Watch what happens if someone comes in with a high offer to Campbell, Rocky, Carlos or any of the RFAs. We will take the draft picks for any and all of those guys unless they take an offer that is close to what is already on the table. These guys don't understand the business side when they are all about me, me, me. If any of them are worth significantly more than the tender, they will get a good offer, but someone really has to like you to be willing to give up a pick. This will also stimulate some trades. Stop crying and learn to work the system in your favor.

Rocky was tendered at 2nd round level despite solid if not spectacular play because he is not a fit w/the D JH is going to implement and are trying to make him more attractive to other teams while still receiving some value if he is signed elsewhere.

On Chile, I did post something a few days back. I spent nearly a month there, mostly south of the earthquake effected areas.

http://www.pbase.com/faerie_39/southern_patagonia

I love the country. It really captured my heart and its been very difficult to watch the news.

The Chilean president has local ties -- she went to junior high in Bethesda (Western, now called Westland).

I do have several friends in the country, one was in Santiago and one in Vina del Mar, when the earthquake hit. Both are fine.

About 2 years ago, a volcano destroyed Chaiten, a small town that I spent a few hours in during the trip.

Separately, I can easily envision how the aircraft carrier idea would have made a huge difference, especially to the Chilean coastal communities. Anyone notice what Chile requested for help? Exactly the sorts of things I mentioned when we did this discussing Haiti (and few things I hadn't thought of, like diapers and infant children's food). None of it expensive, but speed matters.

I have no doubt the folks up here at RI care, even if its not a subject of conversation

Actually if Rogers was tendered at the original round level (level 2) then we will get a second round pick for him if a team signs him to an offer sheet and we don't match.

The reason? Upgraded tenders. Doughty, Golston and Heyer got upgraded tenders (higher than their original round) which means to keep players drafted in round 1 & 2 at their original level of compensation in RFA, teams must tender them at the higher levels. If they don't, they lose one draft round in compensation.

Campbell was fine because he got the first round tender (level 4).

......and yes everything can be negotiated in a trade.

I make no judgement on his skills as a player, but right now, players need to take the money and play. If the economy continues its slide, they won't be playing anything for money.

Carlos has no reason to be upset. He knew this was happening 2 years ago when Players Union and Owners couldn't reach an agreement then & won't now, still. If he's saying there's no chemistry, it's because the organization has to let spoiled players go, who take the cash & allow big opponent plays which lose games like Carlos does for them.

Carlos Rogers = the crying millionaire Clinton Portis of the defense.

Agreed. 2nd worst earthquake in history, actually shifted the earth's axis. You are so right, it's Haiti, Haiti, Haiti. And while what happened in Haiti is an absolute tragedy, where is the love for Chile.

No one is diminishing or doesn't simply care what happened to those in Chile. It's fuc_ed up for both countries and those who are affected.

Haiti:

GDP (PPP) 2008 estimate
- Total $11.570 billion
- Per capita $1,317
GDP (nominal) 2008 estimate
- Total $6.943 billion
- Per capita $790

Chile:

GDP (PPP) 2008 estimate
- Total $243.357 billion
- Per capita $14,529
GDP (nominal) 2008 estimate
- Total $169.458 billion
- Per capita $10,117

Earthquake death toll (Chile): 795
Earthquake death toll (Haiti): 230,000

Why would Carlos Rogers think the team was going to let him walk without anything to show for their former first round pick? This doesn't show a lot of intelligence on his part. If he was a smart guy, right now he would be telling his agent to start knocking on doors to find a team willing to make a trade. It doesn't have to be a first round pick. It could be a sign and trade deal, so now's the time for his agent to get creative. Of course, I think he's going to make a good chunk of change this year with just the tender offer, and I am not sure any other team is going to see him as a value priced player worth trading for. Again, doesn't show a great deal of intelligence on Carlos' part.

They're gonna spend the money on UFAs.....let's see

Dansby - one of the best ILB in the league in the system we're switching to

Peppers - multiple pro bowls, arguably the best DE in the league

Sproles - one of the top 3 returners in the league, dynamic playmaker in two phases of the game

Haynesworth - the best DT in the league

DHall - multiple pro bowler, makes dynamic plays and actually catches the ball

and then

Rocky Mac - mediocre WLB that in multiple seasons has rarely made dynamic plays

CR22 - at best above average tackler and decent cover guy who falls for the same move for 5 seasons and couldn't catch an STD unprotected with a $2 dollar Tijuana hooker

Campbell - average QB, above average punching bag

all three have been "at the core" and the chemistry of teams that have struggled and failed at being average for their entire careers.........

I wonder why they want to pay other players and hang on to you for the minimum they have to.....

FACT CARLOS YOU SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how about quit pissin and moanin and do something different like catch an INT and make a play once and awhile

The players who have earned their contracts are getting them regardless of the change in RFA/UFA due to the uncapped year.

The players on the redskins have only earned an RFA tender.

It's pretty simple. Produce on the field and you WILL be paid. Leave plays out there and that's how you will be rewarded as well.

I hate Campbell for his on the field play, his off the field actions IMO have been exemplary and the reason he has gotten so much time and excuses made for him. Rocky until know has never been a complainer and has lived up to the expectations of a second round pick, his complaints seemed to not grasp the reality of the situation more so than to complain that he was "being mistreated", Rogers does not and has never grasped that as a top 10 pick he should be performing at an all pro level yet save for a 6 game stretch he has been mediocre at best and proven that he can't catch or learn as the same move has mystified him for half a decade, I doubt any team in the league would give a 1st round pick for him, in reality he is being overpaid and was over tendered, and for him to play the woe is me card and say he's being mistreated is bulls#$t.

Well put, Red. Other factors include constant media assurance that Chile was much better prepared for a quake, the lack on major Tsunami damage psychologically affecting people to think the earthquake wasn't so bad, and the fact Chile's was the second of two tragedies and the American public has the attention span of a gnat, anyway.

i'm not totally against carlos rogers because i think he's the best tackling corner the redskins have....unfortunately, the dude couldn't catch the clap from a hooker. all he has to do is look at some game film and understand why he isn't getting paid the premium bucks like the top corners. he spends too much time trying to be a playmaker when he should be a "make player". of course all corners bite on a double move here and there but when your own teammates say in interviews that you have the worst hands they've ever seen or they actually give you the monicker of "double move" that means you really fuqqed up! i just don't understand why he's complaining. he should be happy to be getting a paycheck. for all he knows, he could be out of a job next season. i highly doubt mcdonald's will pay him because he'll probaby drop a customer's order even if the bag has a handle on it!

This cat can't be serious. He single-handedly cost us a win against Seattle in that first playoff game. Hasselback threw it right in his numbers on their own 20 yard line. 'Los could have walked in and propelled us into the next round. But no, like the 900 other interceptions that have hit him in the hands, he dropped it. Get him out of here now.

Posted by: TokyoHail | March 4, 2010 7:38 AM | Report abuse

(Shakes head sadly). Carlos is a decent tackler and can bat down a pass. The whole league knows he can't catch (6 interceptions in 5 seasons?) and regularly gets burned by the double move. That's why he gets thrown on so often; low risk / high reward.

Shutdown corners don't get thrown on as often as CR22. Unfortunately, it seems that he sees being a 1st round draft pick as evidence that he's "made it" and is a superstar. He isn't.

Rocky Mac I like but he can't ignore the knee issues (injuries are the biggest red flag on long-term contracts) and he ain't a rush LB, or a big, run-stuffing LB, so where's his value in a 3-4? A move would probably suit both guys and that (or a contract extension) are still possible.

Seriously, these dudes are delusional, even by the standards of pampered, millionaire athletes. Were they unlucky, with the timing of the CBA? Yes. Are they in a position to complain? Not really.

Credit JC for showing enough nous to shut up.

Posted by: stevebeagrie | March 4, 2010 8:59 AM | Report abuse

Big thumbs down to Carlos for opening his yapper. Either his agent is a moron or he is simply a malcontent who doesn't get it. This was months in the making, a formality. You're only 28, stop acting like this was your last chance to get paid. go work your tail off, have a good year, learn to catch an INT, and you will get the multi-year deal.

JC just keeps looking more and more like the guy- he works hard, he never complains, he's tough as nails- yet people still talk about Bradford or Clausen, neither of whom is even close to worth #4 overall pick. Mystifying.
