Cerrato: There Will Be a New Punter

Jason La Canfora reports:

Vinny Cerrato said on his radio show this morning that the Redskins will have a new punter when they play the Cleveland Browns on Sunday at FedEx Field.

Durant Brooks, a sixth-round draft pick in April (168th overall), has not yet been released, Cerrato said, but the team will bring in a handful of punters for tryouts tomorrow and is expected to sign one of them.

"Somebody else will be punting Sunday," Cerrato said.

Bring in Matt Turk!

So much for the "sticking with the draft class no matter what theory." It's gotta be done, Brooks is punting like some straight garbo.

How about three new receivers Vinny? Anther Ohfer for your trio, Sunday.

And so folks don't think I'm unfair and unbalanced--huzzah's on Chris Horton.

Posted by: TheCork | October 13, 2008 10:25 AM | Report abuse

I agree on bringing a guy in, but just cut him? Don't like it, the guy has the ability, he just has to grow up and learn to handle the pressure.

Does anybody really think some punter off the street is gonna be much better? There are reasons guys are on the street.

I guess we'll see.

Hope this doesn't mess with Suisham's head! He has been solid in the kicking game outside of kickoffs. I know this change has to be made but we are not only replacing a punter but now we will need a new holder for extra points and field goals. Does Todd Collins take reps at holding?

Posted by: mburns134 | October 13, 2008 10:27 AM | Report abuse

Wonder who they'll bring in... Landeta is 90 years old. I would say stick with Brooks. He's young and developed a rapport with Suisham & Albright. He's sacrificed field position with some punts yesterday, but he is not the reason the team lost yesterday.

I sure this makes JLC happy and there will be this long negative post from him today or tomorrow. Ravens still sucks and I can't wait until we play them.

he attacking this aspect of the team so much? Because its Vinny's deal. He's trying to make Vinny look bad in whatever way he can so that he can

"from a previous thread"

Vinny needs no help in the "looking bad department."

I say, let Colt start holding on extra points and field goals. Maybe he'd be able to throw off a fake field goal etc?

Posted by: lsskinsfan | October 13, 2008 10:32 AM | Report abuse

Lorenzo Alexeander can do it, no need to sign anyone else.

Posted by: SAK2 | October 13, 2008 10:34 AM | Report abuse

Did that Tool man up and take the blame for keeping a punter that was clearly beat out in camp? I doubt it. He would earn a lot of respect with the fans if he did. I pin this lose on Vinny simply because turnovers happen and are pretty hard to control, but bad punts that lead directly to field goals are more easily avoided by signing the best available punter.

Brennan can't hold. He is the inactive 3rd QB. If they put him in the game, I believe the 1st two QB's (Campbell/Collins) cannot re-enter..

I think the logical thing to do would be to have Collins hold for Suisham.

Repost:

This blog is so confused on the difference between "your ripping the team and a hater and hurting my feelings" and honest analysis of football situations.

Since we now know the redskins are not going to go 15-1, and be the perfect team with no visible flaws many people puffed their chest out about last week, I think taking a look at aspects of the team that are not as far along as others is legit.

Enough of this "you/he" is a hater stuff, its makes us seem like we are 8 year olds fighting in a sandbox.

So...

- I think it is very legit to wonder about the draft class. The defensive players are contributing. I would love to see Rob Jackson more. In 2 of our wins Devin Thomas was in the game and it helped. ARE stepped up yesterday with some big catches, but our lack of our 3rd WR option (and I mean WR not TE) is a problem. Thrash is trash at this point and its depressing that we don't have a young hungry option there.

- I am never backing off my assertion that Fred Davis was an unwise pick. It simply did not make sense.

- We are not rushing the passer well/enough/effectively. Notice I didnt say "sack". Blache is my dawg, stats are overrated...but QBs are getting comfortable in games, and as good as our secondary has been, its leaving them on an island to much over 16 games to rely that they will make the play. We have to find a way to rattle/hit/force mistakes from the oppossing QBs. Look how even yesterday the pressure on Campbell affected the Skins, killed drives, changed our game plan.

- Heyer/Jansen is a real puzzle as good as each is at their strength they are at their weakness.

- Brooks. Another dilema. Wow I dont have an answer. I would DEF bring in some dudes for try out this week. But the bad punts are coming pretty consistently.

- Our Def should be doing ball catching drills until their hands are bruised. The two dropped INTs were huge yesterday. Fletcher rulz, but think of the impact on his dropped INT would have been yesterday to open the second half.

- scamp is money. This was a lesson not a wake up. But lessons turn into bad trends if they are not learned.

- Over all I am still very siked about the team, zorn, JC, Blache. I still think this can be a fun season!

- Stay medium!

Al Saunders has a voodoo doll that looks like JC in his desk riddled with pins... Why is it our offense goes down the tubes when he's in the building?

Will someone please explain to me why anyone other than a qb is holding for kicks in the first place? Seriously, I cannot fathom why we or any team would take away the ability to run something else out of that formation. Instead of JC, Collins or Colt...let ARE hold...then we could have some fun.

Thanks Adam for explaining that.

+++What's up with all the hate on our draft class?

Stay Medium JLa.........

Posted by: 4thFloor+++

First of all, 4th, the word is "criticism" not "hate." BIG difference. There are these things called dictionaries. Try one. Sorry, that was harsh--but people calling those who DARE to criticize the FO "Hates" tick me off. It's a pathetic rhetorical device, used by people unable to defend the FO.

Second, the criticism comes from the fact that of the ten draft choices on the roster, there is only ONE who consistently makes significant contributions.

That while TWO receivers are starring for their respective teams (Philly, Denver)--both picked AFTER Thomas--the Redskins can't get ANYTHING from the three guys they selected. Aging ST warhorse James Thrash is pressed into service, and Cooley remains the only receiving tight end.

While Rinehart is a likely eventual starter, another high draft pick Tryon has proven to be zero to date. The punter taken with a sixth round pick is being cut, and the backup QB is proving unnecessary, and the only good fortune has come from safeties selected almost as afterthoughts (Horton, Moore.)

Whats the status on Todd Saurbrun? Is he still suspended? He can kick the hell out of the ball. Bring him in. He's a probowl type punter as long as he isn't getting himself in trouble.

I found this list on the internet. Not sure how valid it is:

Top Five Free Agent Punters

1. Jeff Feagles- UFA
2. Michael Koenen- RFA
3. Mitch Berger- UFA
4. Kyle Larson- UFA
5. Todd Sauerbrun- UFA

Free agent punter Todd Sauerbrun has run afoul of the NFL again.

Two sources close to the situation said Sauerbrun has been suspended by the league for four games and he is expected to serve the suspension in the first four games of the season.

The suspension stems from a December 2007 incident with a Denver cab driver.

In June, Sauerbrun pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace. The remaining charges of simple assault and failure to a pay cab fare were dismissed as part of the plea. Sauerbrun was given 24 hours of public service, to be served through NFL Charities, and a one-year unsupervised deferred judgment. He has to pay $216 in court costs.

Shortly after the incident, Sauerbrun was cut by the Broncos. Denver coach Mike Shanahan said he released Sauerbrun because he was verbally abusive to responding police officers on the night of the incident. Sauerbrun has remained unsigned since.

Sauerbrun was suspended for four games in 2006, while with Denver, for using a banned substance. Sauerbrun is expected to appeal this suspension.

I think the main reason is that the three of them (Suisham, Albright, and the punter) can all practice together moreso than anyone else in that position. While the regular guys are off doing their positional work, those three are able to get their chemistry down much more efficiently with increased reps.

"Stay medium" my a$$. If the Redskins are "medium" after that loss, they can expect to lose a lot more games.

They should be livid at themselves, and passionate in devoting themselves to work as hard as they can and do what is necessary to correct their shortcomings.

Staying Medium is good advice for accountants and refuse collectors. But in a game of emotions, focused passion is more appropriate.

What an idiotic slogan, IMHO. It might as well be "stay mediocre."

1st quarter--50 yards to STL 3
1st quarter--43 yards to STL 38
2nd quarter--35 yards to STL 17
3rd quarter--51 yards to STL 10
3rd quarter--26 yards to WAS 33

These numbers do not suggest the guy is all out terrible. Inconsisten? ABSOLUTELY!

No different than what Frost did for how long?
I hope they don't cut the guy, stable kicking game is critical, and he's a rookie, he's struggling, DUH!!!

I guess we should cut Suisham too for a couple of bad kickoffs this year.

If these are the results of all that chemistry, then trash it and start over with someone who could throw it.

Makes sense but other teams still do it and Joey T was always Moseley's holder. I just think you are taking a club out of your bag in letting a guy who can do nothing but punt be your holder.

That while TWO receivers are starring for their respective teams (Philly, Denver)--both picked AFTER Thomas--the Redskins can't get ANYTHING from the three guys they selected.----- ANYTHING? Really so what your saying is that when 1 rookie reciever has a great rookie year if every other doesn't have the same impact they are a bust. Every one of you who thinks D Jackson is having such a great year needs to remember that Philly had NO recievers, so of course he's gonna have a big impact. Just remember last week, how soon you people forget, Thomas has 2 big 3rd down receptions for 1st downs. and had a 68 yard TD called back against Arizona on a stupid penalty. Playing behind Moss and Randle El its going to take a little longer to break in so cut Thomas a break. His role will grow as the year goes on. This is just 1 loss so don't go all crazy. .... About the punter, Don't have a problem bringing in more but I don't think that should have come from Vinny think Zorn should be the one to do that.

"I say, let Colt start holding on extra points and field goals. Maybe he'd be able to throw off a fake field goal etc?"

Comments like these indicate a clear lack of understanding of teh NFL Gameday roster rules. If Colt holds then we have to deactivate another position player, because the 3rd QB is designated as an Emergency Reserve player. If he holds, that means we would have to activate him or make Todd Collins the Emergency reserve QB. Do either of those options make sense?

This was a typical trap game, nothing more. The WHOLE team played like they overlooked a weaker opponent. Hopefully this makes them more diligent in there next games.

I second the comment from the previous poster "I agree on bringing a guy in, but just cut him?", don't cut the guy, you spent a draft pick on him, who knows we could have drafted another Michael Westbrook at WR, so don't cry over spilled milk!

should not cut Brooks, it is way too soon to give up on him. WE're 4-2, it's not like he botched a snap on a game winning FG attempt. This is a mistake in my opinion. And Cerrato should NOT be on talk radio popping off like this.

Posted by: Notorious_LMG | October 13, 2008 11:45 AM | Report abuse

Stay medium.

They're 4-2.

Every season, there is one game a team loses that they shouldn't.

As long as the Redskins make sure THIS was that game, they'll be fine. But they can't let it happen again.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | October 13, 2008 11:58 AM | Report abuse

You can't cut him(Brooks) he will go somewhere else and be a pro bowler, he wasn't the reason we lost Sunday there were many reasons but don't dump on the kid.You mean Vinny's actually found time off the air to scour the waiver wire and maybe find help, and who missed the blitz assignment on the third and eleven that led to the winning field goal for St.Louis?

Posted by: dargregmag | October 13, 2008 11:59 AM | Report abuse

If Danny Smith is as smart as I think, he's been having Todd Collins practicing holding for the last few weeks so there will be some continuity when a new punter is signed. It took until Week 4 at Dallas for Suisham to be confident in Brooks' holds and he's made eight straight. Agree that Brooks needs to go ASAP, but don't think having a new punter as the holder is the answer as a permanent solution.

Collins has good hands, is cool under pressure, and we know he's not going anywhere unlike the next punter who might last a couple of weeks. Funny that Vinny didn't say that Brooks would be cut, just there would be a new punter this week. Cut your losses and move on with someone new at punter. Admit you wasted a draft pick who should have been cut 2-3 weeks ago instead of sugar coating it.

It,s not only the rookie punter it,s the total special teams performance. Randel El catches a pint and TWO yards later he is tackled!!! This happened MANY TIMES this eason. The Redskins punt return stat are as bad as the punt return stats---BAD BAD !!! The team has to work with The rookie punter--HE WAS NOT THE REASON THE SKINS LOST YESTERDAY. Why the hell is Cerrato pushing to dump him--to cover his backside--that's why. He ought to change the special teams coach while he is at it.

can Durant Brooks be added to the practice squad? I mean, maybe he'll be good in a couple of years.

Posted by: blushfilms | October 13, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

This is a bit classless. The team should bring in guys for a tryout and only then talk about cutting Brooks. Right now, he is still on the roster and may be so until mid-week.

Joe Gibbs would never have conducted business like this with guys reading about their own obits in the paper or on radio before hearing it from the team first.

Posted by: leopard09 | October 13, 2008 1:56 PM | Report abuse

Draft picks my ass. In most NFL drafts, after the top three picks, its rare that the players live up to the hype.

Cut Brooks. Specials teams are great if they give you an edge, if they hurt you however, make changes.

If you are a real REDSKIN fan then you remember. McClinton, Mike Nelms, Eddie Brown, MVP Mark Mosely, Herb Mulkey, or future HOF'r Brian Mitchell and Marv Levy.

Don't be stupid. Make the other team travel further to score. Get your team closer to the goal line on returns.

JANSEN at $7 million. PLEASE. Jansen lost the game.

How about getting a new Vinny. Cut his butt....he got a second chance, but he won't give the rookie punter another chance. The boy has the talent...he's a rookie with pressure like never before. You know what's going to happen, he'll finally hit his stride for the Cowboys, Eagles, or Giants and will coffin corner the h*ll out of the skins someday!! Vinny the "knife" Cerrato....he didn't even have the balls to tell the kid before blabbing his mouth on the Radio. This would have never happened if Gibbs was still here. Just one more negative mark for the Redskins. Does anyone remember Jack Kent Cooke? Would he allow such tasteless events from the head of football operations?

Tell Vinny to consider All-American punter and placekicker Louis Sakota from Utah in next year's draft!

"Joe Gibbs would never have conducted business like this with guys reading about their own obits in the paper or on radio before hearing it from the team first."

Joe Gibbs would have had so many three-and-outs that Brooks would be considered a seasoned vet by now.

Seriously, this Joe Gibbs idol-worship is really creepy. The man was an okay coach in the 80s... but that was twenty-five years ago. You know what else was successful twenty-five years ago? Mullets.
