Cerrato: 'We expected to be 3-3'

Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins' executive vice president for football operations, said that management expected the Redskins, at this point, to have a 3-3 record.

Cerrato made his comments this evening on ESPN's pregame show in an interview in the bowels of the stadium with Sal Paolantonio. Cerrato was fielding questions for the first time since announcing on his radio show Friday that Zorn would finish the season as coach. Paolantonio asked Cerrato about the timing of the announcement, and Cerrato offered: "Dan, myself, the organization want this to be successful. We expected to be 3-3, Sal; it's what we expected. So it took a little bit of time to recover from the loss and then to kind of figure out what we needed to do."

It wasn't clear whether Cerrato was referring to a preseason expectation or to the thought that the team would beat Kansas City after the 2-3 start, getting back to .500.

Paolantonio asked about Zorn's long-term future and the plethora of talented coaches who will be looking for jobs in the offseason. Cerrato responded: "We're just worried about Philadelphia, we've got 10 games to play. We've got a long season yet ahead of us. We're worried about this season right now and thereafter. We want to focus on now, what's going on now."

Asked why he has confidence in Sherman Lewis, the recently-hired offensive consultant who will be calling the Redskins' offensive plays tonight, Cerrato said: "I think his history, Sal. The guy's got four Super Bowl rings, he's got 20-some years in this offense. He started with Bill Walsh, the originator of the offense. He's worked Mike Holmgren; Jim worked a lot with Mike Holmgren. So he's got the experience. To me, Sal, it's like riding a bike. You don't ride a bike for a couple of years, you get back on, it's easy to ride a bike."

Finally, Cerrato addressed comments by Hall of Fame wide receiver Steve Largent made last week, first on Seattle radio and later in an interview with The Post. As he said on his radio show last week, Cerrato denied Largent's opinion that Redskins' management issued an ultimatum to Zorn following the team's loss to Kansas City.

"I don't agree with a lot of things that Steve said," Cerrato said. "He's got a right to have a comment. But a lot of the things that he said that he doesn't really know any detail of anything he really talked about."

THIS DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE, VINNY. You're as talented a grammarian as a GM. Idiot.

Why not raid a couple of practice squads now and get started early? We don't need to give up draft picks or trade players to do this, we just have to claim them, and then keep them on the active roster for the season. That gives us the chance to try them out in our system for the rest of the year - whith no obligation or no cap hit if we let them go. Two solid young prospects and we still have all of our draft picks for next year. It's about as close to FREE as you get in the NFL.

How about:

Corey Clark 6'5 325 from the Chargers

or

Alex Boone 6'7" 330 from the 49ers.

Gotta figure one of them could help us at RT at least.

I like this strategy Edvar, esp given that this has already been shown to be a rebuilding year, and as you say there's no downside to this. Success with one such guy would totally change our offseason draft and FA strategy. No reason not to try to do the same thing with other key needs besides OL: OLB, CB, RB... if there's anyone out there on practice squads worth checking out.

Please tell me that someone else just witnessed ESPN's Pregame crew rip Snyder on National TV for like 5 minutes...oh really hope that Snyder saw that is just completely embarassed and sickened. That must have been hard, hope he wakes up.

HAIL SKINS!

Lisa, I hear what you're saying about the coverage, but in spite of those scandals espn is still the best at what it does, providing an irresistible combination of sports and entertainment... whereas it could be convincingly argued that the Redskins are not the best at what they do.

Nate pretty much sums up my feeling on this post.

WTF - and I don't mean why the face.

Posted by: suzannepdc | October 26, 2009 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Thinker, yes indeed, with a win tonight the Skins would be two games back of the Giants and a little bit closer to Dallas and Philly (who will have only played six games each, which I think is referred to as having a "game in hand.")

You are absolutely right that the Skins have not, entering their seventh game, been mathematically eliminated from the 2009 playoffs. I couldn't agree more.

Hail.

How many times to DT11 and MK12 get thrown to when they are on the field. 2 problems, no o-line and journeyman QB

Posted by: noonefromtampa

Which do you blame for their showing up out of shape last year--Jason campbell or the Oline?

Posted by: TheCork | October 26, 2009 7:18 PM | Report abuse

3-3 huh? Ok a loss to the giants was to be expected. Which of the other 5 sucka$$ teams did these geniuses expect to lose to? And they expected 3-3 after these teams, what did they expect over the last 10 games, 1-9?

Wait, before the season he expected to be 3-3 through 6 games? Didn't they say before the season they expected to win the division? And they expected to do that while going .500 against a ridiculously soft open stretch, and then having all those tough second half opponents? Am I missing something here? If they had as much talent as they said they had before the season, they should have been 5-1, or at worst 4-2 with a loss to the Giants and a hiccup against one of the cupcakes.

Idiot.

If the iggles put 14 points up on the board early, and the redskin offense is deader, how much fight do you expect the defense to maintain?

Oh, you mean like last year in Philly when we were supposed to lose?

We need to feed Clinton Portis the ball tonite. You really don't ever hear the TV show analysts criticize Portis or even mention the fact that he's struggling this year(400yds, 4.1ypc = struggling for Portis)b/c he's accomplished so much and he's only 28.

Clinton should get 25 touched tonite if we want to win..I mean who else is gonna win it for us?

Skins have a chance tonight!

Home field advantage:

A group of masked men barge into the Eagles locker room and make off with DeSean Jackson and Eagles Play-Caller Andy Reid.

Five minutes later, at kick-off, a hooded, head-setted figure is wheeled into position beside Sherm Lewis... Like an obese Hannibal Lechter in a burqa.

A svelte Levi Jones wearing #10 returns the opening kick off for a touchdown.

Cerrato: 'We expected to be 3-3'

Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins' executive vice president for football operations, says that at this point in the season, management expected the team to have a 3-3 record. So at 2-4, if we're doing the math right, Jim Zorn's team is only slightly underachieving.

VINNY CERRATO, GM

That sound you hear is Vince Lombardi spinning in his grave.

This guy should have been fired years ago.

This is the most idiotic statement I've heard coming out of his mouth yet.

Again with the super bowl rings, vinnie? I guess Charles Hailey would make an outstanding coach, he's got like 6 rings. Maybe Terry hanratty for offensive coordinator..

Portis needs more like 30 touches if POrtis leads us to victory, plus some screen passes...dial up some crossing routes, slants and TE down the middle of the field to Cooley and Davis...then fire Cerrato

Vinny ain't not dumb, his brain was numb from swallowing the rocks in his bourbon.

I think Vinny was just using that old 'expect the worst, but hope for the best' attitude with expecting a 3-3 record.

Too bad worst case scenario ended up being 2-4 huh Vinny? wait a minute..is that a flying pig?

They made the ESPN pregame crew quiet with astonishment for their decisions. They were unable to speak about how incredibly stupid these decisions are. Maybe be ing embarassed on national TV, at home is what they need, but then again, did nothing last year against Pittsburgh.

This is a Redskins Haters' dream-come-true.

Cerrato acts like a complete buffoon;

The ESPN Crew just trashes the front office for 90 minutes;

It is 5 minutes before the game and there are 5,000 people in a 90,000-seat stadium (and they are all Eagles' Fans);

And the "Skins" are going to get hammered.

Take me, Lord.
