Rinehart Agrees to Terms (With Updates)

Chad Rinehart, the Northern Iowa lineman the Redskins drafted in the third round in April, has agreed to terms with the team. Jason Reid has ferreted out some details: It's a four-year deal that will pay $295,000 this season, $385,000 in 2010, $470,000 in 2011 and $555,000 in 2012. In 2012, Rinehart could earn as much as $1.2 million based on his playing time in the previous two seasons. There's a $611,375 signing bonus.

"He's a guy who they're looking for to contribute right away," said Rinehart's agent, Leo Goeas. "I know Coach Bugel loves him and they definitely think he can be a starter down the line and can contribute quickly. Obviously those decisions will be made coming up here in training camp, but I think they look at him as someone who can contribute physically and mentally right away."

Rinehart is the fifth of the team's 10 draft picks to sign or agree to terms. Others in the fold are DE Rob Jackson from Kansas State; safety Kareem Moore of Nicholls State (who had arthroscopic knee surgery April 29); cornerback J.T. Tryon of Arizona State and safety Chris Horton of UCLA.

Still unsigned are the three second-round picks (WR Devin Thomas, TE Fred Davis and WR Malcolm Kelly) and, from the sixth round, P Durant Brooks of Georgia Tech and QB Colt Brennan of Hawaii.

In other moves Thursday, the team released QB Sam Hollenbach, defensive end Tommy Davis and center Kyle DeVan.

Well, I met the guy and he seems pretty much straight up. I asked some 'pointed' questions and got surprisingly straight answers. He was invited in to interview by 'the SVP' (see my oilier post) so mayhap that 'corporate suicide' is what I committed, I'm just dying slowly.

Still all may not be lost, and you should never gamble with a Sicilian with death on the line!

Funny thing was when he asked me "what would you do with this business" by the time I finished he just said. "Oh, that's exactly the right thing to do. So why aren't you doing that?" to which I answered "Jim (the SVP) won't let me".

Was that the sound of soil on a (corporate) coffin lid I hear?

Joe Bugel is one of the all-time great offensive line coaches, but I've been disappointed at his inability to develop young linemen in his 2nd Redskins tenure. Granted Snyder/Cerrato have traded away all of the draft picks that should have been going towards OL, but you'd think we'd have someone younger than 32 other than undrafted Stephon Heyer. Hopefully Rinehart turns into a servicable player.

I dunno, "Chad Rinehart" sounds like Obnoxious Preppie #2 in an '80s teen movie, probably played by a Billy Zabka type.

But then you see the guy and it's, like, not so much, such as...

So let it be written, so let it be done ... but I sayeth, when drafting offensive lineman, go for the guy who can throw discus.

The rhap on Rinehart (I think on the nfl site about draft prospects) is that he needs to bend more at the knees and bend less at the waist. Apparently, blocking schemes rely alot on furniture moving techniques.

I tend to like the anonymous approach myself. When an anon posts a message, there are no preconceived notions as to the value of the comments being provided. Some will be good, some bad, some funny, some thought-provoking, etc. etc.

Unfortunately, when a named blogger posts a message, there is immediate bias introduced to the reader. For example, when cL posts a message, I have already come to expect complete and utter incoherence and bitterness. While even a blind squirrel can find acorn on occasion, I don't give the man a chance exclusively because of my preconceived notion.

4:10 PM - while your thoughts do make a little sense - one of the features that makes RI the blog/message board that it is is the appearance of regulars, and the knowledge that on at least some small level that you KNOW the person that has posted.

Essentially, it has become an extended community, joined together by our singular and obsessive love for the 'Skins - and we have some people join in who support other teams but stay for the jibba jabber.

It's the anti-internet, in a way. You identify yourself as part of your inclusion into the community that is RI.

Dan Shaughnessy is a huge piece of S#%@.

Don't know if anyone caught this or not but he hosted PTI today with some other schlub. The 2 did their "Big Finish" on Sportscenter and part of their "Happy Trails" bit was saying good bye to retiring QB Trent Dilfer.

The other schlub asks Shaughnessy if there any other Super Bowl winning QB more anonymous than Dilfer. Shaughnessy than goes on to list a bunch of names, including Doug Williams. Is this douchebag being serious?

I'm not trying to be a "homer" here but seriously, wasn't Doug Williams the 1st African-American QB to win a Super Bowl. Haven't alot of black quarterbacks playing now credited Doug with serving as a role model and inspiration to them. Haven't people both in and out of football credited Doug with finally putting to rest the notion that blacks couldn't play the QB position and also continuing to justify that blacks/whites/etc are equal?

Did this turd-eater really suggest Trent Dilfer is more popular/well known than Doug Williams?

Just another reason to loathe ESPN and anything Boston related (as this guy writes for the Boston Herald and is a Boston homer).

Hey Everyone,
Haven't been around here much at all since the draft.

Hey, I do vividly recall Max Zendejas kicking for us. I recall a friend loved the
Broncos and the Skins in 86 traveled to
Denver and lost out there in a nail biter 31-30. And how did we lose because Max missed an xpoint. He missed several that year, and was gone next year, I think.

The next year again the Broncos were the class of the AFC, but ran into the 35 point Skins 2nd quarter and we trounced the Broncos in San Diego SB XXII.

Our kicking out XP that year was .....
remember???

Ali Haji Shiekh
Steve Cox would attempt really long FG attempts.
Jess Atkinson the former Terp, actually started the season as our kicker. But it's foggy for me what happened. Was he injured while actually attempting a kick in a game? Recall he was injured, but that is all I recall.....

After we won SB XXII Bobby Beathard was so tired of our place kicking position he drafted Chip Lohmiller with a high draft pick.

I want to say that Atkinson got hurt making a tackle on a kick return. I just used "The Google" and found out he dislocated his ankle in the season opener against Philly. Oh, and apparently we signed Babe Laufenburg the same day as Ali Haji Shank so he could back up Doug Williams who was backing up Jay Shroeder who also go hurt in the opener. Damn Eagles.

Cyn Cyster, Thanks for the love and equal thanks for keeping this thing rolling.

Loved the anxious assessment of the D. As most of you know I tend to be a full cup kind of guy if it's half-full and there's always a drop in the glass anyway, so I don't buy into all the doom and gloom about Carlos, Springs, or especially the thought that our defense will need a complete overhaul in 2009. Nor could I give myself a concern when 2008 is upon us in less than a fortnight.

Carlos, hold him out to game eight or whenever the bye week is. We drafted 10 guys, what 3 dbs, two of which played corner in college + our man Leigh Torrence and who knows about Baby Westbrook. It ain't exactly the Great Wall of China but I see it holding.

I love the switch from Prioleau to Schweigert. Now we got a starter (raiders) to push Reed without the miles of Prioleau not to mention the two rookies drafted to play safety/special teams.

I'd love to see the whole class of 10 make the team and still have the same 22 starters from last year.

Griffin, Springs, Daniels, and Washington will be fine this year. Some of them might be outstanding. When the season's over and you want to play Madden GM then kick 'em to the curb but on the brink of 2008 just be a damn fan. I certainly don't remember everyone worrying about whether Monte Coleman or Darrel Green were going to breakdown - that's all's where's I'm coming from.

Standard wire stuff from CBS. TE, thanks for reminding me about that network. Being and NFC guy (Redskins obviously) they have been off my radar but glad to see that as of this moment it is: 23 days 19 hours and less than 15 minutes 'til the HOF game.

--Cornerback J.T. Tryon is just 5-9, but after being taken in the fourth round of April's draft, the Arizona State product bragged that "it really don't matter" who else the Redskins had at the position because "it's my spot to take."

The Redskins, who gave Tryon a $429,000 signing bonus on June 13, are just fine with that cockiness.

"He's quick, aggressive and confident which is a good thing for a corner," said Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato.

Tryon and returning backup Leigh Torrence will compete for playing time behind veterans Shawn Springs, Fred Smoot and Carlos Rogers (once the latter recovers from reconstructive knee surgery).

This seconday could be good. I know the other side of that coin but I'll take heads.

No. The Redskins have four QBs on the roster today: Campbell, Collins, Brennan, and Devine. So, Brennan and Devine are fighting for a spot. That's why they have pre-season.

If neither shows anything better than Hollenbach showed, they could bring him back or look elsewhere. There are lots of free agent QBs out there:

Not guilty means there is going to be a trial and, if you lose, books start flying at you. Guilty means you admit it and you beg for mercy from the prosecutor and judge (who often give mercy b/c it saves them the time of having a trial). No contest means you admit nothing, and would go to trial if you had to, but are willing to take some punishment if it means you don't have to. Whether you can make a no contest plea depends on the charge ... for some stuff, the judge requires either guilty/not guilty ... and, in some cases, its in the discretion of the prosecutor. [I don't do civil/criminal enforcement stuff, so there's a pretty good chance I'm making this up ... but I still think it is about right.]

Right basically nolo contendre or no contest is a guilty plea. In the eyes of the court it means that you don't dispute the charges put against you and you do waive many constitutional rights such as the right to a jury of your peers and the right to face your accuser.

It is often done to signal that you dont see yourself as guilty of the charges brought against you but concede that you did indeed commit the "act" to which you are accused. It's often done in self defense cases, reckless driving, etc.

One of the most famous no contest pleas in U.S. history was that of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, who was accused of crimes committed while he was the Governor of Maryland. Mr. Agnew pleaded nolo contendere in a Maryland court to the charges. Eventually, Agnew was forced to resign as Vice President.

There's a slight difference between nolo contendere (I do not admit guilt, but I do not wish to contest the charges) and an Alford plea (I feel I am innocent, but there is enough evidence that it would be a risky trial). SMACK's example is an Alford plea.

If you can plead nolo contendere, the big benefits are (1) that you "were never found guilty of that horrible crime" when you get caught the second (!) time, (2) if you're doing something for which a "three strikes" rule applies, it doesn't count as a strike, and finally (3) if, say, the Goldman family brings a civil suit against you, you don't have a guilty plea - or conviction -- that the other side can use against you.
The court likes nolo contendere because they can punish you as if you were guilty without having to go through the complete trial.
Nolo contendere explicitly does not look at the facts of the case. It is as if you are saying "it's cheaper to pay the fine than to hire a lawyer."
There are many jurisdictions and many types of cases for which nolo contendere is not allowed, and that's where you see the Alford plea used. It is an admission of guilt in the eyes of the law.

n.b. IANAL, but I have been surrounded by them on occasion.

SKIPPY EXPLAINS BLACK HOLES

Just kidding. Want some pie?

Okay. cerealy, here's all you needs to know about Black Holes.

When a star, such as Brittney Spears, runs out of unclear fool, it collapses in and of itself.

But first it expands into a 1967 Chevy Super Nova, and ejects part tickles into the Strategerosphere. This is call premanure ejaculation.

Next it shrinks like Rabach's package dipped in the Antarctic Sea.

The result is so dense, most of thee posters here don't get it. Even light can't escape from a Black Hole. Back in July of '56, in the last daring attempt, light once tried to escape from a Black Hole named Marie, but was gubbed down and recapitulated as it went over the wall.

Black holes then suck everything that gets close to it, which is expressly forbidden in the Bible.

Black Holes, however, may marry in California.

This is all true except the part about the Chevy, which is a product plug to help pay for Meringue.

Fondly,

Skippy

Black holes spit out what they don't hang onto by way of "jets", which are outward streams of (sometimes visible) matter and energy. The difficulty is assessing how much is taken in, versus how much is spit out, due to the ability of matter to alternately take on the characteristics of both particles and waves. There also is the problem of dark matter/dark energy, which cannot be seen but can be measured.

We are not very close to solving some of these issues from a technological viewpoint, so much of what is "known" is only astrophysical theory that is assumed to be true.

like is there an opposite of a black hole somewhere on the other side?

Posted by: dcsween | July 11, 2008 11:13 AM

Yes! It's a white hole. Been hypothesized, but not yet discovered. Too racially charged.

Posted by: talent evaluator | July 11, 2008 11:31 AM

White holes are hypothesized but may never be 'proven' as they lie on the other side of a singularity (black hole). This is because as you move beyond the event horizon and within atomic scale dstance of the actual singularity itself, the laws of physics, i.e. general relativity, break down.

Because of the small distances involved quantum mechanics should work but can't because it wasn't designed to handle the 'infinite' energy/mass problems of a singularity (think all possible mass squeezed into an infinitely small area) which menas that you end up having equations including the term 1/0.

There is 'hope' that string theory will provide a theoretical solution eventually.

I knew all that physics study was for something!!

We need an entire section on the RI wiki to archive Skippy posts. They could probably teach a lot of US Americans valuable information, and about a wide range of topics like maps, such as.

I'm sure most of you saw my post yesterday about Dan Shaughnessy yesterday appearing on PTI and claiming that Doug Williams was a more anonymous quarterback than Trent Dilfer. So yesterday I emailed him to ask him if he really thought that, pretty much citing all the evidence that I listed in my post yesterday.

Well, low and behold, he actually emailed me back (well if you want to call it that). Here's what he said, word for word:

"you are right. dan shaughnessy"

*sarcasm on*
I'm so glad he took the time out to recognize his error with his detailed response
sarcasm off*

So on one hand I guess I'm glad the dude atleast fessed up to it but at the same time guy still rubbed me the wrong way.

"980 makes its move

Redskins 360

POSTED July 11 2008 9:19 AM BY Ryan O'Halloran

In the end, when everything is played out and the station lineup features many of the same shows and faces, the acquisition of SportsTalk 980 by Redskins owner Dan Snyder might not be that big of a deal on the D.C. media landscape. But the early indicators are that it will be a big deal.

A good guy lost his job on Thursday and the Redskin Park media room will be a worse-off place (if thats possible) because of it.

The new honcho at 980 has turfed Redskins beat reporter Jerry Coleman, a friend of this blog and somebody who didnt make an enemy amongst the writers or broadcasters who cover the team (an incredibly tough feat, speaking from experience).

Jerry, who covered the Redskins for two seasons, was at his best during Joe Gibbs Monday press conferences and we were all looking forward to how he would interrogate Jim Zorn during his day-after-game briefings. He was fearless with players and coaches and had hilarious stories that made him a break-the-monotony figure.

Snyder, who I doubt was involved in this decision, is playing with fire if he allows the tinkering of 980 to continue.

I dont listen to Redskins Radio because I expect everything to be sugar-coated. I do listen to 980 from time to time because Ive been a guest several times and it allows me to get a vibe of what the fans are thinking by what theyre saying with their call-ins.

If a guy like Steve Czaban who was Mark Brunell/Joe Gibbs Antagonist No. 1 (Ill take slot No. 1A on Brunell, possibly position No. 2 on Coach Joe) isnt around or decides to leave, what will be the tone of a talk show after a Redskins loss or victory? Brian Mitchell and Doc Walker -- former Redskins players -- have been critical of the Redskins since joining the station and if he's fired, thats another negative mark against Snyders radio organization.

One person at 980 said the firings were cost-cutting. Now thats a story worth pursuing if the slashing continues. Does The Danny want to limit costs because his other ventures are struggling? Does he want to save money on 980 because the Redskins are having trouble selling luxury boxes (like they were last year, according to a team source)? Did he have to spend so much to get the valuable 980 signal that hes ordered his radio execs to slash costs?

A final thought: From what Im told, Redskins Radios flagship show, The John Riggins Show, isnt afraid to be critical of the Redskins and thats good for 980. BUT if theres nobody credible left on the station, what difference does that freedom make?

Redskins 11-5...lose on the Road to the Eagles, Cowboys and Seatle..at home to Pittsburg and the Browns. Sweep the Giants this year and win 6 games at home. The first road victory will be the opener against the Giants (we get lucky and catch them in super bowl hangover mode) then a middle of season road victory over Matt Millens Lions and finish December strong wining all 3 road games, Bengals, Ravens and 49'rs, all teams with significant question marks.

On a side note, at least we will be callled the Redskins from here on out...today they Federal Court sided against the Native Americans for a final ruling today. No more legal garbage to deal with, thank god!

The Truth asks talent evaluator why he thinks The Truth attended UGA? The Truth did not go to UGA nor did The Truth ever claim to go to UGA.

Also, The Truth finds it tasteless to make a joke out of someone having a metal plate in his head as he actually does know someone that had a metal plate put in his head to save his life.

The Truth is not surprised though, since talent evaluator would laugh at parents whose kid died in a brutal manner.

Also, The Truth says that there are 49 days until the UGA opener.

The Truth also notes that UGA has picked up CB Jordan Love out of Redskins country Virginia!

Am I the only one who cant stand Riggens show? I am sorry but no Radio show should ever be put on TV. They just sit there. Now do a show where Riggo walks the streets of DC and randomly runs into people, knocks them over and then spiks a ball in their face, I am watching that.

Posted by: Alex35332 | July 11, 2008 3:09 PM

but czabe every single day the guy reaches and i mean reaches to pull something close to something that would interest people. when you're trying to be controversial "steroids are better than marijuana" WTF!!!! it doesn't work. he doesn't have the smarts to be howard stern of sports.

btw don't know if you know but snyder owns 980, the station czabe works for. and truthfully riggo was much more critical towards joe gibbs 2.0 than anyone in this market. (i said critical not offensive, czabe was the most offensive.).

In a more football related matter (imagine that!), Michael Smith just said on NFL Live that he thinks that most likely destination for Favre is Washington. Says the WCO is a perfect fit, he has a veteran playoff team around him, and it's understood that it's a one-and-done situation because JC would have a year to sit and learn the system and be the guy for the duration. And just like every other talking head, he points to Snyder's love of getting a "name" guy. His logic is sound, but I just get the feeling a move like that is jumping the shark and f**ks JC up in the long run. Any thoughts RI Nation?

No way. Favre can't come to Washington because we can't fit him under the salary cap. Not many teams can take on his salary -- around $12 million. Besides, if management had been interested in Favre, word would have gotten out long ago, like the crap about Chad Johnson.

Posted by: talent evaluator | July 11, 2008 4:53 PM | Report abuse

TE, Favre asked for his release, so nobody's trading for him or his $12 million salary if they know they can wait until he's released. I could see him settling for $4 to $6 million for 2008 if he thinks he can get a ring out of the deal. But I can't see the man in burgundy and gold. Sh*t just isn't right.

Anyone who is a true REDSKINS fan would be crazy "NOT" to want Farve here, he has plenty in the tank and is a perfect fit for cold weather, west coast offense, strong offensive line and veteran team....think facts, not emotional support for Jason!

Every man in the league with a contract older than two years is asking for his release. The Packers haven't released him and they won't release him. If they release him, he signs with Chicago.

But, yeah, as part of a trade he would have to settle for a lower salary, but the numbers you mentioned still won't work with the Redskins -- they restructured bunches of contracts already and have little flexibility this year.

ESPN, though, has no idea about the Redskins. Remember the initial story a few days ago where they ran down every team in the league and when it came to the Redskins all they could say was "They've done stupid things in the past, so they might do something stupid now."

The last ESPN show, Rome is Burning, agreed he was going to Tampa Bay, Baltimore, or Carolina.

I hear you TE, but even trades require signing a new contract nowadays because everyone wants a bigger piece of the cap pie. I don't want to see it, but Danny's shown he can pull money out of his ass when he wants to.

Everyone says "Favre to Baltimore" because they need a QB so bad, but that doesn't really fit. I doubt he goes anywhere that the WCO isn't already in place and Baltimore isn't a playoff team. I still can't believe the Jail Birds are still living off a rep they got in 2000. That was 8 years ago. This is 2008, and your D is old and rundown and Ozzie Newsome had his first brain fart as GM by trading what totals half a draft for McGahee. Way overrated team, even with Favre.

CL, you are a tool...nobody here cares what you think. As far as cap room is concerned, they would do a large signing bonus with vet min for salary. With the new rule to spread out release money, the skins could take the cap hit on the bonuse after next year and spread the dead money of year 2 and 3. All I am saying is that Farve at QB is much better for the age of this team then Campell trying to learn a new system. Our OL is strong enough to run the ball and block for Farve...give him those two ingredients and he is DEADLY, still at this age...One last note on CL...DID I MENTION YOU ARE A TOOL AND PROBABLY AN OLD FART AS WELL!

Your the d-bag telling people who the "true fans" are and naming yourself "prediction", pretty good recipe for tool to me....

Uh, you can stop calling yourself "Prediction" or we're suing you for misrepresentation, etc. I've met CL and he's not an old fart. Maybe he's a young fart, but far from an old fart.

wait I forgot 2 more ingredients that prove Prediction that you are the used ball bag...

screaming in all caps, sure sign of dueche and using "old fart" who else but old people use that term, think of a better comeback...

For the record, 36, sorta in between young and wild and depressingly middle aged...but it does mean I actuall watched some good redskins teams unlike you will next probably defend Norv Turner

CL, prediction is 12 so to him you're an "old fart".

Been awhile talent. I extend a hearty good evening to you, sir.

Yea all that would be grand unless we have an uncapped year and then all the bonuses have to be payed to salary the year before. Oh, and your a tool.

So now PTI say Favre will be in DC. "When has Dan Snyder ever resisted such a toy?" "Never." In other words, they don't know Jack (or whatever he's calling himself now.)

You obviously didn't read the rules heading to an uncapped year.....

You can not push Dead Cap money into 2010 (Uncapped year). Nor can you push amortized gaureented signing/roster bonuses into the uncapped year as well.

We (skins) are going to be the same team until 2010 because of these rules. That's the primary reason we will be drafting more younger players over the next 2 years.....

Not an old fart...well that is a relief at least! I am also 36, so you are definately not an old fart:) Since you watched so many great Redskins teams, tell me why Jason Campell is so great (compared to Farve)? Please explain to me your logic...facts only please.

Aha! Same age!

If you noticed I didnt agree/disagree with you. I don't think the Favre/Skins will happen, yet have opined if it should.

However my reaction to you was that I detest the "Real fan" crappe. Its gross. Fans have all kinds of opinions, thats what makes it fun...Real fan accusations are like attacking patriotism for divergent beliefs. It just gags me out.

Too bad prediction didn't predict how much sh*t he was going to get. What a tool.

Hey 4th, read this and tell me the skins can not desinate Farve a June 1 Cap hit next year and not spread the difference over an 09/10 season...get your facts straight please.

15. What is the "Deion Sanders Rule"?

Basically, it means that in a contract that extends into an uncapped year, the player's combined salary, roster bonuses and reporting bonuses in all capped years must be equal to or greater than the combined prorated signing bonus allocations in the capped years.

If the latter is greater a cap debit is applied to the players salary cap number pertaining to the difference prorated over the capped years, then credited back to the players cap number in the uncapped year(s).

CL, lighten up...you can take offense to the "Real Fan" comment but the reality of the situation is that Farve is better than Campell. All Redskins fans are "True/Real fans" but when it comes to true football knowledge, I would say that the "real fan" understands the game a litlle more than your average joe...not that one is more important than the other, just when it comes to football moves like acquiring a player, then, the fans who actually understand the game, and do not get emotionally tied to a high draft pick, see that Farve would help this team win, more so then Campell.
