Special Teams Will Take on New Look

Jim Zorn spoke today about how difficult it was for special teams coach Danny Smith to waive corner Leigh Torrence last week, and said the team realizes what a daunting task it will be to replace him there. In the end, it's likely to take multiple players to supply what Torrence, claimed by New Orleans on waivers, gave the team.

Smith addressed special teams players about Torrence's departure at a meeting Monday, players said, with everyone in the room realizing that it was a significant blow. He told the players that rookie corner Justin Tryon and rookie wide receiver Devin Thomas are likely going to have to assume more duties now.

(If you're unable to activate this widget, go here to vote on this question and get a bonus -- tangible proof of your superiority.)

Torrence was a gunner on punt units, often the first man down the field and responsible for trying to down punts near the goal line. He also worked as a jammer on punt returns, something required to hold opponents up to allow others to get to the ball. Torrence was a leader on the unit.

Players said they expect Tryon to be active this week - which would give them five corners available - because of his special teams role, acting as a gunner at least part of the time. Thomas, while struggling to make an impact on offense after being a second-round pick, has embraced special teams, earning awards for his hitting. He, too, will pick up some of Torrence's responsibilities.

Zorn reiterated today that DeAngels Hall, whose signing necessitated Torrence's departure, continues to practice with the special teams units and will play there in at least a limited role Sunday night. Hall is working as a jammer on punt units, players said.

I believe that Carlos will get a pick 6 this week. A combination of dropping another simple INT against the Steelers on MNF, and the signing of DeAngelo Hall (a noted ball hawk) will motivate him to hang on to one, work his way down field, give Romo a nice big stiff arm and do some dancing in the end zone.

Here's his shot, we haven't seen the kid since preseason. Hopefully he'll step up.

As far as new looks, maybe the special teamers could go with gold jerseys and gold pants this week. That would really set them apart.

So... guessing Danny Smith didn't vote Leigh off the island, huh?

Posted by: NateinthePDX | November 13, 2008 4:47 PM | Report abuse

Jasno,

I swear you make it seem like cutting Leigh Torrence will be the demise of this team. Get over it already. Our special teams captains are Khary Campbell and Rock, losing one of them would be a huge loss. Not losing a 4th corner while picking up an undeniably better talent at CB in DeAngelo Hall.

We know you have few people on the team who probably like you so losing Leigh was probably harder on you than most, but warm up to DeAngelo, maybe he'll give you an interview since he hasn't had to read your garbage from day 1.

...
And here it comes:
...
News reports are coming in today that the reason that TO has been relativly happy in previous seasons in Dallas was that he had unrestricted access to a nearby goat farm, which was sold and turned into a mall at the begining of this season. Owens has not been to chipper since then, and has been seen many times crying in public. Those close to the team say it is because he has been unable to play with the goats, late at night in the barn by himself, as he was to frequently do after practice. At the begining of the Pre-Season there was some speculation that Owens had been doing other things with the goats when one goat gave birth to a newborn that instantly started crying after a Tony Romo interception.

DHall should fill in for Leigh on ST's.

DThomas was already on ST's along with Leigh I thought.

but at the gunner position and getting downfield, we might need Tryon's speed. His job would is gonna be simple enough, work the rook in slowly.

When I heard we waived Torrence, all those punts that he was great on is what came to mind. Hopefully Tryon can make it go.

I'm not huge into watching specifics on special teams, and usually I'm not too good at watching specifics of my team(s) in general (I usually cheer too much and by the end of the game can't remember any plays, weird) but from what I've heard Torrence has missed some chances right down around the goal line to make the play.

and Tryon has more speed I'm assuming, so maybe Tryon will work out now with his small role.

For crying out loud, if cutting Leigh Torrence really deserved as much attention as it's getting it would have been front page on every paper in the country!

ZEKE'S UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES brought to you by Yahoo!

In honor of dallas week, I'll recall sitting at home, a dreary overcast day, fading into night. The last day of 1972. When the Skins played dal in the NFC Championship game. And CRUSHED them.

The over the hill gang defense was amazing, holding them to 3 points, and they were lucky to get those. Staubach saw lots more dirt than he saw teammates. The 'boys offense went nearly 25 minutes without a first down to start the game and never even sniffed midfield in the second half.

Their Charlie, DB Charlie Waters, was absolutely torched, until he tried returning a punt and got his arm broken.

Our Charley, Charley Taylor played like the Hall of Famer he is. 2 TDs and nearly 150 yards from old man Billy Kilmer.

It was mauling, from start to finish. George Allen's finest hour. For most Skins fan, it was the single best game since the days of Sammy Baugh and the best until John Riggins broke free on that memorable 4th and 1 a decade later.

Yes, I remember that gray day ever so fondly.

Here's a link to it to the Post article from Jan 1, 1973.

[And finally, Irvin asked Portis about some study concerning men having sexual relations seven days a week. "I'd go all seven," Portis volunteered. "Hey, I can go seven for seven."]

Seven for seven? Sheesh, that would give me a serious case of Quibberdick.

On 2nd/long and 3rd/long, bring JT and AC.

Were I Greg Blache, I'd consider all three at once, with Taylor lining up as a linebacker. Of course, we're talking obvious passing downs, but it would give you three tremendous athletes on the pass rush, especially since Montgomery may not be able to go.

As for Erasmus James- does anyone know if he is a left or right DE? If he's a right DE, he's behind Carter, so good luck getting on the field there. If he's a left DE, his knee may not be good enough yet to take the pounding against run blockers.

i couldnt agree more ane for a few more reasons...for the stretch of the defense, open up the short game and run game...to get out in front quicker...to put games a way...to get back in games quicker...and last but not least...the occasional pass interference penalty

also why are people hating on the rally rags sooo badly...i mean the timing of it is pretty pathetic in response to the pitt fiascoe...and not crazy about the name either...but i kinda like the idea of 50k fans twirling the burgundy...and down the road...90k fans twirling the burgundy...

i remember back in the day when the cap center was full of people wearing white and twirlling the white towels in the playoffs...awesome!!!

as for burgundy on burgundy...it was different...but i liked it...still like the white on burgundy best...dont really like the white on white but if it supports a winning streak i could care less what they wear...would like to see more throwback unis...w/ either the solid burgundy helmets or the arrowhead helmets...just not the yellow from last year...hated that...

Funny how people say "don't you think Jim Zorn knows better than you?" when discussing how it was "clearly" the right decision to release Torrence instead of Tryon, but when they read comments from Zorn's and Danny Smith's mouth about how daunting the task will be to replace Torrence, these same people resort to mocking the coaches.

Jerry Jones: Cowboys WILL Make the Playoffs

IRVING — Jerry Jones "absolutely" believes the Dallas Cowboys will make the playoffs, would welcome Adam "Pacman" Jones back to the team if he's reinstated and isn't considering a coaching change.

"That's not optimism," Jones said. "I just see that we were going to have to be a team that (was) playing well and won a lot of games at the end of the year to be what we want to be anyway."

I sense that it was a little easier to release a 6th round punter than a 4th round pick. Cutting a 4th round pick might have been swallowing too bitter a pill (esp. given how the media has been less than complimentary about the performance of the 2nd round guy). Bottom line: I don't expect Danny Smith or Greg Blache (or Jim Zorn for that matter) were the ones holding the cards on who was going to get cut to make room for Hall. Special teams are made up of whoever is left over anyway.

Torrence is a chameleon.

There is no doubt he'll play in the slot for the Saints, exceed as a corner and on special teams, and probably be a big part of their version of the A-11, or so-called wildcat offense.

There is seemingly no end to Torrence's ability to be in the moment and in so doing carpus dieum.

Sure he was maligned here in Washington, for he is a man of the people not of bloated government, and we will no doubt live to regret our hasty decision.

I also predicify that he may one day enter politics and later someone will write a book about him, which might be entitled: All the President's Playahz.

Heads Up Cowboys Haters: Team Faces Debt Crunch
Joe Weisenthal | Nov 13, 08 10:51 AM

The Dallas Cowboys are the most hated and loved team in the NFL. Nobody with even a passing interest in football is neutral on them, which is not the case with, say, the Carolina Panthers. So here's some red meat for the Dallas Cowboys haters out there, which is probably half of you. The team is facing financial stress due to the tight credit markets:
Sports Business Journal: The Dallas Cowboys are seeking to borrow $350 million by Dec. 1, according to numerous finance sources, in one of the worst credit environments in the nation’s history.
The club’s proposed deal would refinance $126 million the team borrowed last year through the now-imploded auction-rate securities market, as well as add new debt to cover cost overruns at the team’s $1.2 billion stadium that is set to open next year, the sources said.
“Everyone is looking at the Cowboys’ deal. It is a huge bellwether,” said one finance source. “This is one of the only deals, period, in the market [sports or otherwise].”

Fellow fans, now is the time to start visualizing a Redskins WIN on Sunday night.
Start doing everything you can possibly do to help lead the Redskins to victory over our hated rivals.
Especially on game day: Lucky boxers, no urination during the game, watch with the remote in the freezer... whatever it takes, by any means necessary, we will win this game.
We gotta do it.

Chaos theory supports this idea. If Redskins fans tell the universe the Redskins beat Dallas, then the Redskins will beat Dallas Sunday night.

Chaos-Schmaos. According to Hugh Everetts' Many world theory, teh 'skins CAN'T lose Sunday. Unfortunately, neithr can the Cowboys lose. The trick is to get them to win in the PArallel Universe, while the 'skins win in the one all of us except T-E and Criag2 occupy.

Some details from "How Stuff works"

"When a physicist measures the object, the universe splits into two distinct universes to accommodate each of the possible outcomes. So a scientist in one universe finds that the object has been measured in wave form. The same scientist in the other universe measures the object as a particle. This also explains how one particle can be measured in more than one state.

As unsettling as it may sound, Everett's Many-Worlds interpretation has implications beyond the quantum level. If an action has more than one possible outcome, then -- if Everett's theory is correct -- the universe splits when that action is taken. This holds true even when a person chooses not to take an action.

This means that if you have ever found yourself in a situation where death was a possible outcome, then in a universe parallel to ours, you are dead. This is just one reason that some find the Many-Worlds interpretation disturbing."

I was at that game. As a 12 year old die hard fan (I cried like a baby when we lost to the stinking Dolphins in the Super Bowl) there was never a greater moment. RFK shook so hard I thought it might crumble. Walking through the tunnel after the game with my parents and listening to the wild, geeked up fans was incredible!

LMG,

I want this game badly,... Romo is 1-3 against us all time. I just see them pinning their ears back against Jansen. He will have a LB and Ellis over him all game long punishing him. He's been weak at best in pass protection. Steelers proved it. Springs isn't going to be playing to shut down TO. If we win it's b/c we held them under 21 pts.

Posted by: michael_b_clegg | November 13, 2008 10:28 PM | Report abuse

The Redskins are so nervous about the game that they are taking extra measures to make sure they have a true home-field advantage. Steelers fans dominated the lower bowl of the stadium two weeks ago, so executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato was on the radio this week practically begging the Washington faithful not to sell tickets to Cowboys fans. The team-affiliated radio station is distributing 50,000 ``Redskins Rally Rags,'' a response to the Terrible Towels waved by those Pittsburgh infiltrators.

Me? I'm not nervous. Dallas sux.

Ad budgets slashed? Maybe, but how much do you think they had to pay the Bud Lite frogs, the two mud-wrestling hotties (my personal favorite), or the More Taste/Less Filling feuders?

I don't think anyone has ever said "I can produce a better commercial if you'd just double my budget." Okay, a lot of people have said it, but they were all wrong. The key to a successful beer commercial is simple: a couple of ripe 23-year-old girls -- ones who look great before you drink the beer -- who convince you that if you buy their beer, they're going to come home with you and, together, show you the time of your life.

For the love of God, man...he's the f-ing 4th corner! Several years back the Pats cut Lawyer Milloy just before the first game, pissing off the entire team. They reacted, lost their first game and would only lose once more the entire season! And that's a team captain! The Skins will move on and be fine. There may be some growing pains early, but they'll be fine. This is the NFL. In a perfect world we could keep everyone. From Clayton

At 5-4, the Cowboys aren't going to catch the Giants, so they have to look for a wild card. Even if they lose Sunday, they still have a chance to win five of their last six and maybe get to 10 wins. The Cowboys have home games against the 49ers and Seahawks that should give them momentum going into a tough December stretch that includes meetings with the Steelers, Giants, Ravens and Eagles.
If anything, this is a must-win for the Redskins. A loss could cripple their playoff chances.

Let me see if I got this right. If Dallas lose they still have a chance to make the playoff. If the Skins lose it would cripple our playoff chances. Wow! What type of math is he using?

Yeah Nate, and Belichick didn't forget either when we played them last year...

Cindy, any update on Betts? My fantasy team depends on it!

Yeah, I think he had that backwards...the Cowpies still have to play Baltimore and at Pittsburgh. And that's not to mention the division games. Meanwhile, the only tough games the Skins have is Baltimore on the road and the division games at home. Dallas doesn't have any gimme games anymore. If they lose here, they're looking at about an 8-8 season.

JM220: after we beat Dallas, they're not going to have a map to the playoffs.

I get that Malcom X Kelly doesn't have a grasp on the offense yet. But why not put him in on a couple "simple" plays (jump balls, and go routes? We MUST take shots down the field this game!

JM,

Allot of these idiots picked the Cowpukes to win the SB at the begining of the year, now they will say anything to make people believe they still have a great shot at making the playoffs.

If I were one of the so called experts I would have jumped off that bandwagon a long time ago.

Again the Skins get no respect nationally which I don't mind, I'll bet most experts think the Iggles have a better chance then the Skins to make the playoffs.
