Donovan McNabb, Chris Cooley developing rapport

Quarterback Donovan McNabb seems to be developing a good rapport with tight end Chris Cooley, who sat out more than half the 2009 season after fracturing his ankle in Week 7.

Cooley had three receptions for 33 yards - including a 19-yard gain - in the 42-17 victory over the Buffalo Bills. "We definitely have a good relationship," Cooley said. "He'll ask me what I think about routes. I want to know where he's expecting me to be.

"We got out of the huddle on a couple of plays [against Buffalo] and he looks at me and says, 'Hey. Be smart Cooley.' And I think, 'Yeah, I know what he wants. I know what he means by that.' So we'll continue to grow in that kind of partnership. And he'll grow with all the receivers as well."

Although it was only a preseason game, the two-time Pro Bowler worked the middle of the field as well as he has throughout his productive career. Teamed with McNabb, Cooley believes he could have a stellar season.

"I was expecting between like 135 and 140 [receptions], but 150 ... that'd be awesome," Cooley joked. "And maybe like 1,800 yards. No, but it could be a good season for me. I'm excited to get back. I'm very critical of myself.

"I do a lot of things that I like right now, but I've done a lot of things that I'm upset with. I walk off the field every day thinking, 'If I had four or five plays back or to do over, I would have been happy with my day.' Hopefully, I can get to the point where it's closer to perfect."

I look for a big year from both of our top TEs. Hope D Mo makes the team and catches a few balls.

Those of you sticking your chest out because we've had a few injuries on our offensive line need to consider this - the Redskins' defensive line sucks ballz. There's nobody on your d-line who scares us! That's why injuries are no biggie for the opener. Offensively, who on your offensive line would start for the Cowbloys even in our depleted state:

Rook Williams? Nope
Hook'em Hicks? Nope.
Pushed-Back Rabach? Nope.
Dopey Dockery? Nope.
Bad-Hip Brown? Nope.

Somebody clearly spiked the burgundy and gold Kool-Aid with some Bacardi 151 to get Redskins "fanz" talking foolish garbage. Save some for 9/12. You'll need it, dummies.

Yeah, because one preseason game with three catches and a WaPO blog about him suddenly means he's back on top of his game. Sorry for the cynicism, but it is early. I like what I see from Cooley so far, but is he just back, or is he all the way back? I need to see more. We heard a lot more noise from Fred Davis in camp...

As for trading Cooley, I was one of the guys that said, "pull the trigger", but I am not convinced that it would have been a bad move. I might be eating my words if they find enough two tight end packages to use both Cooley and Davis effectively but I wouldn't say they have based on one preseason game that didn't find the two of them on the field at the same time very often...

You think the 2 of them are developing their rapport while sitting in stalls during practice trying to do their best to mimic Fat Albert?

Just as long as they're not acting like Larry Craig while sitting in the stalls and are actually dropping a deuce, though.

I think when a team has back to back last place finishes, no player on the roster is immune from trade chatta.

If you're not winning with him, how can you argue his value to the team?

This is in some way encouraging, the bills first team cleaned house against the colts first team, in the 34-21 win by the bills ...maybe they aren't as bad as we first expected. Preseason doesn't mean anything with the possible exception of a team's first team vs. the other team first team, and usually only fundementals (tackling, blocking.etc). I'll say this though, spiller will be getting into many a secondary this year; he runs like marcus allen.

I liked how quickly Cooley got downfield vs the Bills. On the 19 yard play (from the 29 to the 10), he was at least 15 yards downfield and had made his break when McNabb threw it to him.

On that play, McNabb had taken the shotgun snap, followed by a short drop, stepped up and threw. There was no wasted time by McNabb and not a lot of time for Cooley to get that deep and make a move. But he did get that deep -- which tells me he's operating at full speed.

I suggested trading Cooley and DT to Denver for Brandon Marshall and a pick. With Davis already here and no one standing out at WR, I'd still make that trade in a New York minute. I do think that Cooley is in for a big year, though, with McNabb in this offense.

It will also be a good thing that they kept both of them if one or the other gets hurt……even if they aren’t on the field together a lot it means we have solid depth.

Now that I re-read your post, I see you were talking about Gibbs 1.0. I think the answer is the same. There could have been some three tight end plays but I think this gets into the confusion over whether the h-back is a tightend or a running back.

Thought you may have misunderstood at first. I seem to remember some package used on the goal line that may have included Don Warren, Doc Walker and maybe Clint Didier, not sure those three were on the roster at the same time. Where I was going with that, in a short yardage situation, say a 4th and one on the short side of the 50 put in a similar package with Cooley, Davis and D Mo or Yoder, get the defense bunched in the box and fake a handoff to CP26 or LJ27 and throw it to Davis or Cooley. Sounds like TD to me. Just daydreaming on a Friday afternoon with the day off. Thanks for re-reading my earlier post.

Son, a woman is like a beer. They smell good, they look good, you’d step over your own mother just to get one! But you can’t stop at one. You wanna drink another woman!

Beer waits patiently in the car while you're playing softball.

So poopy, you are a fan of "The Simpsons" I gather by the 4-5 posts of yours I have seen that directly quote the show. I am just curious, what season did "The Simpsons" jump the shark in your opinion...there is only one right answer.

Sadly, I think my comment is the least of the controversial race comments posted up here in recent minutes.

Old people don’t need companionship. They need to be isolated and studied so it can be determined what nutrients they have that might be extracted for our personal use.

Mrs. Krabappel and Principal Skinner were in the closet making babies and I saw one of the babies and then the baby looked at me.

Feel free to re-start the redskin football talk.

Thingis, at this point in the week, we need another game to have something of value to say.

I'm sure Shanahan will use tight ends in wide receiver spots to mix it up - especially on short yardage and I ma sure there is some jumbo package out there that has a creative use of three tightends.

I am now witness to the most assinine conversation ever to grace the pages of this fine blog. This Obama discussion is retarded and whoever is engaged in it should just go ahead and kick themselves in the nuts three times.

I hate to be the one who breaks it to you, but the Redskins have one of, if not the, weakest group of WRs and TEs in the league. Moss? Overrated midget who is easily taken out of games by the defense, fumbles, drops passes and is injury-prone. Cooley? Average TE with very subpar blocking skills. You want to see what a real receiving TE looks like, look at that kid Hernandez the Pats drafted. Cooley simply is not in the same paragraph with the top TEs like Whitten, Gonzales and Clark. The other receivers have totalled about 20 catches between them the last three years.

Our only hope is to pick up someone's camp cuts, which shouldn't be that big of a reach because none of our WRs could start for any decent team.

okay, not gonna get into the stupefying discussion on race, i mean common 4th and Moe. I know your better then to let a troll fight get to you... actually wait, never-mind you two love to fight the trolls.

On Gibbs jumbo set. You have to remember he used the H Back to begin with so he was always using 2 TE's in that sense, so going into a Jumbo I by going 2 TE and an H Back or something to that effect was not a stretch for the style of offense they ran.

Did Joe Gibbs I "Heavy" package have a three TE set?

=============================================
I seem to remember in a Giants game Gibbs had unbalanced set to the right with both Dider and Warren and made Jacoby eligible on the left. I remember thinking it would have been cool to see Doc Walker in that package.

The way I heard it, Andre Gurode's eyebrow starts to twitch whenever Albert Haynesworth lines up over the guard and polka music is piped into the stadium.

Cooley & McNabb are going to be good. I was Big against them trading the face of the team. Sitting in the stands and when he catches the ball and hearing that COOOOOOOOOOOOOOley just sets the fans off. Last friday night was the first in many years that the crowd was as loud and ready as i have seen them in many years in a preseason game. Can't wait for the cowboys game!!!!!! Redskins fans we need to shake the stadium just like at RFK.
