Cincy Is Beautiful in December...

Jasno heard an interesting item on the radio just now and calls it in:

Sure, the economy isn't great, but if you've got some discretionary income in the mattress, want to see the Skins and have no hope of getting to FedEx Field, you might want to think about that Dec. 14 game in Cincinnati. Bengals fans are dumping tickets right and left. We're not in the ticket business, so a couple clicks of the google button should set you up.

And if you're heading to FedEx on Sunday, the Capital Weather Gang says it's going to be a great day.

I checked prices, the upper level tickets are real cheap, but the lowers and club are market value, not much of a drop.

Yeah beantown, to me I will take Thomas' raw talent/size/speed/desire, even with the brain farts, over washed up Thrash any day. I think it both adds more to the field right now, and pays dividends in the future.

Also the way he improvised, got open for a scrambling JC for that TD that Heyer got called back showed me a lot.

Also he seems very willing to block, now he needs to learn to do so without getting flagged....

A job I would be perfect for was listed in Cincy recently. Now I love NYC, but it was a great job, we could buy a house blah blah blah....I showed it to my wife and she said....

"Are you F*&king insane?"

Love Marvis Lewis, but the final line in that article is rough:

"Coach Marvin Lewis said he shares that frustration and feels responsible, adding he hopes fans will wait patiently for a turnaround."

Er, he hopes fans will continue to wait patiently for a turnaround...

F Marvin Lewis....

During his one season here his big contribution was forcing the D to read that stupid bizness motivation book "Who Moved my Cheese"

When I heard that I knew we were done.....you don't asked Defenses to read dumb books!!!! You feed them red meat and withhold sex!!!!!!

Do you think Blache would have the D read "The Secret" NO!

My grandfather, da coarch, always preferred nosebleed-endzone! A set of binoculars and you're good to go...

Of course, those seats in his day were probably what club level endzone is now.. lol.

Cincinnati is a hard town.

I spent near an hour looking up what kind of food I will need to make for that game, almost as hard as finding out one for Cleveland?

First thing I learned a Cleveland steamer is not a meal, not in the least. And the closest thing I could find was Prorogues which I am told are hard to make.

Apparently there is something called Cincinnati Chili, and no that's not a sex act, but its basically a watered down less spicy chili.

What is wrong with the midwest, can they not create good local dishes that are unique and fun!?

My wife keeps saying she'd move anywhere but here - then I bring up the options... (Asheville, Lexington, etc.) and she BALKS big time! lol.

Besides the ongoing joke known as the Bungles, when I think of Cincinatti the other thing that comes to mind is the cop who pulled over a stone-drunk Bob Huggins and got caught on the cruiser video tape saying something to the effect of: "We can't keep letting you off for this."

Nice.

4th and alex,

That also happened to me a few weeks back. I tried to post some great YouTube clips before the Skins/Dallas games - things like Aikman getting decapitated by Lavar, Moss burning Roy Williams, etc. I think they held mine up b/c of all the links I posted - nothing profane (never use the language).

Cincinnati also elected Jerry Springer to the city council and then had him as mayor after he fessed up to patronizing a house of prostitution (dude got caught because he wrote a freakin' check!)... and I think they were the site of that huge Mapplethorpe exhibit/art vs obscenity flap... and I think they have a bunch of simmering racial tension... even though I have some family down there, I've never visited... place has no interest to me whatsoever...

But I feel like I'm piling on. I keep waiting for someone to speak up on behalf of Cincinnati. Anyone?

Umm, JLa, not sure if you've checked but the *SKINS* aren't even sold out this season. For every game, there have been a mysteriously large number of "visiting team returns" available direct from the ticket office, including lower bowl seats. They've also been selling off the club level on an individual game basis for about 1/2 the price of what folks who got suckered into long term contracts with the team are paying per game. The "waiting list" has become a myth perpetuated by Dan Snyder.

He's lucky the NFL is not blacking out his games.

You may have a point there. I signed up for the waiting list in 2004, expecting to get my number called sometime, oh, next decade or so, and instead I got the "you're up!" email this year...JUST when I'm in the middle of buying a house, so uh, no season tickets for me yet.

Any other thoughts about why the Skins have all these returns this year? It does seem unusually high.

My father inherited season-tix from my grandfather who passed away. After years of sitting on 495 and paying ginormous amounts of money for parking, the Tailgate club, etc. and seeing a losing product on the field. My dad gave them up - I wasn't mad at him. Instead he bought a big screen LCD and we enjoy the games from the leather couches in the living room.

Did anyone hear Clinton Portis' comments about the Pacman on the John Thompson show?

I don't have a link to the sound bite, but he basically said that he felt that the suspension of Pacman was a little harsh given what happend. He also stated that he didn't pistol whip anyone, or choke out the dude while he was driving or anything like that.

Mike & Mike played that portion of the interview this morning--Mike Golic went on to absolutely RIP Clinton Portis for making those comments.

I like Clinton, besides the fact that we share the same first name, he's my favorite football player. But his comments about dogfighting and now this about Pacman makes me wish sometimes he'd just say "No Comment" or just sidestep the question.

Rogers will soon be getting this acclaim on a national basis. So many people were down on this kid when he was put in situations beyond his years, Im glad everything is working out for him and its due to the amount of work and focus he has put into his game in recent years, not just relying on his ability but learning the position, great draft choice.

Posted by: Stu27 | October 16, 2008 9:18 AM |

I'll be the first to admit that I was down on Rogers. I never full out bashed him but I questioned him plenty. Bites on the double move, can't catch, and doesn't get his head around for the ball. While I still think he can't catch he really has improved in every area and seems to be turning into the player i hoped he would be (and initially thought he would be) when he was first drafted.

I have to agree, someone needs to be there to remind Clinton to not start talking about this kind of stuff. Though Dog Fighting and fighting a guard in the bathroom are different issues, I got to wonder who it was that asked him about this. This Cintillating conversation is still ongoing... awesome... good to see this blog still has a capacity for anything...

RedDMV, what's Clinton supposed to do? Dudes ask him questions because they know he's a quote machine at this point, and he rarely disappoints... AND he has a tendency to be on the side of the other members of his fraternity (the NF of L) by default, even when their causes are shall we say dubious. I wish he'd clam up sometimes, too, but it's not like he's hurting anybody but himself by saying what's on his mind.

the ticket returns may be a by-product of expensive tickets for one (although they have been expensive for the last 10 years so it does not seem like all of a sudden it would matter now), but also the economic troubles people are having. People cannot afford/are not willing to buy tickets right now.

Keep in mind the media can make a shabingus out of anything, and a shabingus can be distracting for the team.

That being said, this is a non-issue. As long as Clinton keeps doing his job on the field, and his life on track off the field, he's golden.

I'll speak up for Cincinnati. I have some family out there and I visit twice a year.

- Peter Frampton lives there.
- Cincinnati Chili is really very good. (Alex for your food thing - there are a lot of people of German descent in Cincinnati - go with Brats for that game)
- They have a great Oktoberfest.
- The Zoo is cool.
- The Purple People Bridge. http://www.city-data.com/picfilesc/picc21280.php
- A water park called The Beach changes into a winter wonderland during winter. You can slide down the water slides with no water. Don't know how they carry insurance but it was fun!
- Mount Adams http://www.mtadamstoday.com/

Of course, the midwest is very different from the east. And I'm not leaving Virginia! but it's not a bad place to visit. Certainly not when you can catch a Redskins game while you're at it. I'll be there!

I disagree ClintonDMV. Portis is being himself.

I got ripped for supporting Vick and Portis. And I'll support him this time as well!

I didn't hear that segment, but I heard the interview, and Portis said that if it hadn't made it to the media, then it wouldn't have been an issue at all! Players often get in fights in a wide variety of situations but it never comes to light (*Cough* Irving *Cough*), and it's no big deal. Not being yourself for a whole chunk of money is like selling your soul to the devil (which is why I get ripped sometimes at my job and on RI).

That's what I was saying yesterday about investigative reporting on the NFL beat. Babe Ruth would have never been!

Portis made those comments during his weekly appearance on John Thompson's show. When his interview was over, Thompson pretty much attributed CP's comments to a reluctance to publicly criticize a fellow player, which is also how it sounded to me at the time of the interview.

Mike and Mike are jerks. Frankly, I couldn't believe they didn't have anything better to do than try to make a story out of CP's comments. I don't recall them going off on Jerry Jones with that same vigor for conducting a farce of an "internal investigation" into the Pacman incident and letting him off the hook, which is what the real side issue of that story is, to me. As much as Czabe gets on my nerves, Mike and Mike make me long for him in the mornings.

Cincy is about 90 minutes from the 'Ville and like any other city in the US, it has good and bad parts. When I was there last, I had a good time. I would stick to the Downtown area and the 'burbs. It's pretty cool to be able to see the Great American Ball Park (Reds), Paul Brown Stadium (Bengals) & US Bank Arena from I-75/I-71. I might try to sneak up to the game, but with it being so close to Christmas, I still haven't made a decision yet... maybe that can be the anniversary gift my wife gets me. :)

y'know, with all the complaints about Portis & his non-pc-ness... no one seems to address that at least PART of what he says is true.

He may not have the same opinion as the wonks that run media and steer acceptable public opinion, but PLENTY of people have similar opinions as what he's expressing... I like that he's forward about it even if I disagree.

I felt that way about the Dog Fighting comments and about this too, if the description of his comments here is accurate.

I would think the response point is to bring up what the NFL may be trying to avoid - escalation to such a state where Pac cold cocks a fan or what have you....

Though Dog Fighting and fighting a guard in the bathroom are different issues, I got to wonder who it was that asked him about this. Than again, has Portis ever got in any trouble, I dont think he has.

Posted by: alex35332 | October 16, 2008 11:20 AM

It was John Thompson.

And Portis continued to say (which I doubt Mike&Mike included) that Pacman's situation was similar to his and B Mitch's situation a few weeks ago when it made SportsCenter and he said people were telling him that him and B Mitch got into a battle with fist flying and what have you. He was just saying this was blown out of proportion......

One thing we all must remember though, when dealing with this stupid Pacman situation. Is it overblown at least a little as a result of the overemphasized media attention on Dallas? Probably so. Does Dallas soak up the media attention 99% of the time and do their fans run their mouths and claim to be America's Team? Yes. Is this deserved? Yes. Is CP the man? Yes. Does Red cry everytime CP acts like a man? Probably.

I actually agree on the harsness of the pacman suspension...but do I care...heck no!

4th, i still don't buy your line of argument on the investigative journalism. Especially since it had nothing to do with Pacman case...their was a police report, the articles basically printed that in a "just the facts" way....not like the press had any bearing on Comish's ruling. He is obviously taking a hard line....Pacman makes his own bad luck, that is the ultimate lesson.

I don't recall them going off on Jerry Jones with that same vigor for conducting a farce of an "internal investigation" into the Pacman incident and letting him off the hook, which is what the real side issue of that story is, to me.
Posted by: Im_JustMe | October 16, 2008 11:33 AM

Couldn't agree more with this. Jerry Jones just was trying to keep his "high risk-high reward gamble on the right track for the cowboys. Trying to sweep it under the rug like he did shows what a scum bag he is. "Internal investigation" my butt. That book about Irvin stabbibng a guy in the neck shows the extent Jones will go to for cover ups in order to keep his team winning. I hope Goodell starts up an investigation on Jerry Jones....that would be priceless.

Speaking of Cincy:

*Skyline Chili is the best -- get the coneys.

*Three letters: U-D-F. United Dairy Farmers. The best ice cream, and even more important, malts, I've ever had.

*And the best speciality in the Cincy area, little known outside, is gedda. It's a breakfast item made of steel-cut oatmeal, pork and beef sausage, and spices. It's sliced into pancake-sized patties and fried in a skillet. There is nothing like it.

*Oh, and there's a Hofbrauhaus across the river in Newport, Kentucky.

Can't really pick a number one overall, but I will try to "type" them:
For "sci fi", I gotta go with Supernatural, Lost, and Terminator seems to be hitting a stride.
Comedy - 30 rock, Scrubs, Office, Big Bang, South Park and the new Jay Mohr show is pretty good
"Cop/CSI" shows - Bones, CSI vegas, and plain old Law and Order
Reality - Survivor and Amazing Race
Can't really think of any dramas that I can't miss.

Cheers was the best show of all time in my book.

4thFloor, I didn't know that Rock would even try and talk to Pacman. They seem like two totally different people.

Speaking of Rock, I heard something from Rock this morning about him not getting those carries like we would if he were a #2 back.

For the first time ever (Other than when ST#21 passed) I felt sorry for the guy. He seemed really disappointed, but said that he'll continue to be supportive and continue to "do his thing on special teams".

Rock is a great guy, and a decent football player--just wouldn't want him as my #2 RB, that's all.

You eat the hot-dog before the coke. Also I think Scrubs is canceled. And Man Vs Wild is not as good as Survivorman, MvW is faked quite a bit, and frequently they wrap for the night the guy and his crew go stay in a camp-sight or hotel and they pick up the next day. Survivorman, he goes out in the woods alone with a few cameras and has to do everything on his own, including camera set up which makes it more amazing because he will go and set up a shot then walk past something, go back pick up the camera again.

Glad you appreciated my recommendations about Cincy, CL and Nate. And thanks for posting the link to goetta from Wiki. Whenever I think of that stuff, I lose control of my neck and drool a la Homer Simpson. "Mmmm, goetta." My wife's from Cincy and we usually go back at least once a year. Upon my return, I'm at least five pounds heavier, and I'm sure if my blood were drawn it would have the consistency of whole buttermilk.

Jinxman - the cinammon in the chili is definitely something you either love or hate. The Goldstar variety goes a little lighter with the spices, but I'm a diehard Skyline man.

As far as beer/bars, Nate, I can only speak to the Cincy burbs. In Blue Ash, there's a place called the Watson Brothers Bistro/Brewhouse. It's owned by the Queen City Brewing company, and I think they have a different location downtown. Very good smoked porter and a New Zealand style ale that is tasty as well.

Okay guys, I am glad this got posted. I moved from Annapolis to Dayton and am planing on going to the game the 14th. I seriously want as many people to come as possible. Every year around this time Bungals fans start getting fairweather fever and dumping tickets. Why not make them pay by filling the stadium with burgundy and gold?

Fly into Dayton from BWI instead of Cinci. Airtran flies that route and it is the cheapest. It is only an hour drive to Cinci from there. You may also want to stay just north of Cinci, it is nicer than downtown and the rooms are cheaper.

P.S. I am flying out for the game again this Sunday so if you see me in section 216 say hey!
