Clinton Portis will play Sunday against Titans; Ryan Torain out
Running back Clinton Portis will return to the backfield for the Redskins Sunday at Tennessee after missing five games because of a groin injury.
Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said following practice Friday that Portis is healthy enough to play, but running back Ryan Torain will be ruled out for Sunday's game against the Titans.
Portis suffered the groin injury in the Oct. 3 game at Philadelphia. He was able to practice this week, and Shanahan said he looked good enough to play this weekend.
"If we didn't feel good about him, we wouldn't play him," Shanahan said. "He looked like he'd be good to go."
Portis initially was coy about his status, saying, "It's a game-time decision." But he then conceded, "It's exciting to be back. I felt good, so to have this opportunity to be back out there. ... I had an opportunity to go out and test it, and I did."
Portis has 195 yards on 49 carries this season, an average of four yards per carry. He has two rushing touchdowns in four games this year.
Shanahan wouldn't discuss Portis's exact role Sunday against the Titans.
"I'm not going to go into detail about workload we'll give him, but he's going to play in the game," Shanahan said.
Torain started four games in Portis's place and had 391 yards and three touchdowns on 91 carries. He injured his hamstring, though, in the Oct. 31 loss at Detroit. Torain was limited in practice last week, but Shanahan thought he'd be healthy enough to play against the Eagles. Torain tweaked his hamstring in pregame warm-ups and spent the
entire night on the sidelines.
Torain was not able to practice this week and Shanahan said he wasn't certain whether he'd be able to return for the team's Nov. 28 game against Minnesota.
Rookie Keiland Williams started in the backfield last week. If Portis handles the bulk of the workload Sunday, Williams could return to his role as the team's third-down back.

On Portis: "If we didn't feel good about him, we wouldn't play him," Shanahan said.
How much credibility does "Dr Shanahan" have when you read on:
Shanahan thought [Torrain would] be healthy enough to play against the Eagles. Torain tweaked his hamstring in pregame warm-ups and spent the entire night on the sidelines. [And he's out again this week with the same injury!]

I can't believe I've entered the fantasy football hell known as Shanahan's RB situation. And now that he's the Redskins coach, it's even worse.
Imagine Portis will play third downs and some 1/2nd downs if Keiland isn't effective. The good thing is that Keiland is a good receiver, so the coaches can design plays for both and confuse the defense. That is until McNabb throws an INT because the O Line gave him 2 seconds.

What pisses me off is that they always stop at Deion and Bruce Smith. I mean, if we're really going to open THAT bag, why just stop at Deion and Bruce? Because if we're going to TRULY be revisionist we should ask questions along the line of:
* Why didn't they try to get more in the 'Tana/Coles trade?
* Why didn't the refs notice #57 from the Buccaneers lined up in the neutral zone during Dan Turk's botched snap?
* Why did they trade James Thrash to the Eagles?
* Why aren't they lining up Micheal Westbrook in the slot?
* At this point in his career, is Mark Carrier best suited to play SS or FS?
Becuase THOSE questions are the stuff that revisionism is made of.

Agree Greg. Start KW and put CP on third downs. Also Cut Galloway and bring Davis up from PS.

Coles was a bum, we got the better deal out of that trade. He caught 90 balls his last year here, for LESS THAN 1,000 yards!!! How do you catch less than 1,000 yards if you grab 90 BALLS!!! Coles sucked.

That's what Shanny says.
I think Davis would be a good player in this system, but I'm interested in seeing what Simpson has. Get him some touches in space and let him run.

i hate going down this road, but when u see a guy play so well out of nowhere, then he's always has some random injury

He really isn't a player out of nowhere. He was highly thought of in college, but his injury issues there caused his stock to tumble on draft day(s). Some players can shake the injury bug, so far Torain hasn't.

Marcus Washington had a couple solid seasons for Indy, that's what made us take notice on him.
Had an awesome first year here with us and made the ProBowl, should have made at least 2 or 3 more here with us, don't really understand why.
My problem with him, and us as an organization, is once he got injured he kept getting injured and would never recover, which wasn't necessarily his fault, but I would love for this team to cut ties with aging/injured players faster. We kept Marcus for AT LEAST 2 extra years than we should have. Thanks again Vin!!!

IT CAN NOW BE REVEALED...
... That this was always meant to be a game time decision, but then somebody realized that CP26 would need to pass through TSA security before he boards the plane to Music City...
It so happens the screeners started out by taking a nudie team photo -- except for Cooley, who had already been declared "good to go" after he texted a picture of his junk to the airport.
Then they pulled a few the players aside for a full contact "screen play" -- and that's when they really started paying special attention to "cuttin' an eye" on Portis' "package."
The long and short of it: After a thorough evaluation, Portis was cleared to play on Sunday -- but also told that if he fails to do well, he may need to find another way back to Washington following the game.

There are so many ways to answer this, I just can't decide. I suppose the easy answer is, who doesn't play when his groin is all swoll up?

Portis hasn't played since the Huns sacked Rome. His halcyon days have passed. He is about as useful as McNabb's arm mechanics and his receiver choices on third downs.
Don't look for any improvement against the Titans. Like Portis, this team is old and creaky.
