Clinton Portis hopes to play Sunday

By Jason Reid

Redskins running back Clinton Portis hopes to play this week against Minnesota after an MRI exam revealed no new damage to his injured groin, Portis said Tuesday in a radio interview.

During his regularly scheduled appearance on 106.7 The Fan's The Mike Wise Show with Holden Kushner, Portis, who briefly returned to the lineup in the victory over Tennessee after missing five games, said he could play Sunday against the Vikings at FedEx Field if the swelling in his groin area decreases.

"Hopefully, the swelling go down," Portis told Wise and Kushner. "The MRI didn't reveal anything new, so that was a great thing. That was great news. Right now, dealing with swelling, and hopefully that go down."

Later in the interview, Portis reiterated that the MRI "looks pretty good. So far so good, you know? We're just waiting."

In addition to Portis' ongoing groin problem, second-year back Ryan Torain missed his second consecutive game last week because of a lingering hamstring injury.

Torain sat out the second half of the Week 8 loss to Detroit and was expected to play in Week 10 against Philadelphia. But he aggravated his hamstring on the field before the Eagles' 59-28 win.

Chad Simpson, who primarily contributed on special teams, was placed on season-ending injured reserve Monday after breaking a bone in his foot in pregame warm-ups at LP Field. Young back James Davis, recently signed to the practice squad, was promoted Monday to the 53-man active roster.

Portis ran well in the first quarter of the Titans game, playing for the first time since suffering a severe groin tear during the Week 4 victory against Philadelphia. The nine-year veteran displayed shiftiness and acceleration while rushing for 32 yards (a 6.4-yard average) and catching one pass for a 14-yard gain.

After the game, however, Portis acknowledged he was not fully recovered from the injury. But he said he owed it to the team to play, especially with Torain still out.

"You never want to give up on your team," Portis said shortly after the game. "You don't know what's going to happen.

"Just to be able to go out and be able to provide that initial spark to get guys going, for guys to see like, 'Man, he's really giving it all he's got,' you never know how that can ignite the team... If every week that's my role, then I can accept it."

Portis is nearing the end of his career with the Redskins, and possibly his time in the NFL. He has rushed for 227 yards (with a 4.2-yard average) this season, giving him 6,824 yards in his Redskins career. Portis ranks second to Hall of Famer John Riggins (7,472 yards) on the all-time franchise list.

The one thing that i really remember about Dirty Davis at Clemson was he had a real nose for the end zone. Dude produced a ton of TD for them, he was always doing a great job stretching out at the pylons and finding the small creases to get into the end zone.

Actually, I'd lay money on Erik Cook or Selvish Capers seeing the field before Austin/Davis.

We probably will carry an extra lineman into Sunday's game.

The vikes present a very good defensive front, so warm offensive line bodies are a must.

You are so out of it. How long does it take for the news to get to la-de-da San Clemente?

For your info, Jason Reid posted up here last Saturday that Austin had been put on the regular roster, made the trip to Nashville with the team. I'm not sure why he didn't get in the game. Jason hasn't followed up on that.

This was Jason Reid's first documented scoop since he became the "Redskin Insider."

As a prototypical poster on this here blog, I am against signing any free agents. I am also against keeping the players we have as they are all terrible. I am against trading draft picks for players, but also agains using them on any players that we would draft. Draft picks should only be traded for more draft picks, so that we can use them to trade down in the draft.

I also came to your your mom's basement to kick your ass but you were commuting to your job at Dairy Queen on the short bus, so I diddled your wife's sisters girlfriend instead, you non-spelling, Snyder-defending, non-football knowing,70-year-old-still-in-high school gay Rebublican d0uche phukers.

Yea, except now here's the surprise...wait for it...he's wrong. Davis is already listed on the active roster on the team website yet Austin is not. Once again proving that you shouldn't believe everything you read...especially here.

Wow, what a cool guy you are, sounds like you go cruising around looking for Cougars with retarded sons. Good luck with that, just 2 pieces of advice:

1. Don't just put the High Karate on, you have to take a SHOWER first, one stink doesn't cover up the other.

2. You might want to start recruiting your dates at the local KKK meeting, I hear they like the N word a lot, which is right up your alley!!!

This is a Mike Shanahan subterfuge. Of course the team website wouldn't list the actual players. We don't want them to prepare for Austin.

The Washington Post is never wrong. They verify everything from anonymous sources before posting anything. This is the home of Mike Wise.

This is true. I had high hopes for Capers but last we saw he was stuggling in the preseason, since he is a Tackle anyways i dont see him coming up anytime soon. Cook will be interesting to see if he gets a call up at some point. Everyone hats Casey and I hope he is out all year so we can take a look at what else we have,
Either way the Williams are vets, while they may be on the decline, you line them up agasint some greeneys and their gonna get their ish handed to them. we dont need that this game.

The problem is, when you look at the remaining schedule, when do you put them in? At some point you just get them in and see if they can play regardless of who they will be lining up against.

That is assuming that this coaching staff feel Cook is ready for some playing time.

Galloway showed he had a pulse on Sunday so he hasn't fully decomposed, yet. Just want to see some young guys get reps and find out who can play and who can't. Don't need to waste time on washed up vets.

I checked out a Vikings blog after the Chilly firing, and this was one of the numerous things that Vikings' fans were blaiming their failures on. Actually, their list of gripes very closely matched a list that Moe posted here yesterday (Moe, were you reading the same blog?).

BTW beep-beep,

I think you would be better off if you stopped trying to be the blog police and stuck to talking football. Do you honestly believe that anyone on here is going to change their behavior just because you or anyone else tells them to? Advice is one thing, demands are another.

If people want to use all of those tired blog cliches that you listed, let them. Those things are usefull indicators to help identify the people who should be ignored/ridiculed for their lack of creative and/or logical thought.

26 will be better off as the RG. Can we go one week when we have more then 1 healthy RB in a game. If you use 26 as a third down back you are telling Minn, look here look here, he is our extra blocker. He poses no threat as a 3rd down reciever.

Title should have been Portis expects to play for 5 plays before he leaves with another injury. Yes he's a decent runner, WHEN HE'S IN THE GAME!

I don't expect Portis to become healthy enough to go for any long stretch, maybe 2 games at most before he's on the sideline again with Haynesworth who is also a decent defender WHEN HE'S IN THE GAME!

Posted by: keedrow | November 23, 2010 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Dude needs to get himself a few new sideline wardrobe combinations... especially given the amount of time he seems to be spending there.

Dude has spent more time in that long-sleeved gray shirt than any of the other uniform combos available to the players and coaching staff.

So long as the team refuses to IR him... and so long as Dude remains unable to play for more than a couple of series per game -- the least he could do to help generate some return on his $8 million guaranteed by modeling some the other merchandise available from the Redskins team store.

Posted by: Vic1 | November 23, 2010 2:05 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone notice how confident Brandon Lloyd looked and played in a Denver uniform. He's averaging 20 yards per catch and caught 2 or more for 20+ last night. He played good for the 49ers and Broncos but when he donned the burgundy and gold, excuse me, red and yellow he was labeled a failure and run out of town. He and Jason Campbell are probably thanking their lucky stars that they are no longer with the skins.

"Portis is nearing the end of his career with the Redskins, and possibly his time in the NFL."

What's that based on? That is, this isn't qualified at all. Do we need to review Toulmin? I understand this is CP's last guaranteed year, but who says they won't resign him at any price? Shanahan? CP? Allen? Unnamed source #4322?

I understand it makes sense. That doesn't make it WaPo worthy.
