Portis makes appearance at McNabb's football camp

Clinton Portis was a no-show for the Redskins' final voluntary organized team activities session on Thursday but flew up to Philadelphia from Miami on Saturday morning in time to support teammate Donovan McNabb's annual football clinic for kids.

Asked what motivated him to come from spending time with his family in Miami for the event, Portis said he didn't need any.

"You don't need any motivation," Portis said on Saturday in Marlton, N.J. "You're doing something positive for the community. [McNabb] asked me to come and I showed up."

McNabb said he appreciated Portis coming up when he could have been with his family at home.

"To fly here from Miami to Philadelphia - from Miami - to participate in this particular camp, that says a lot," the quarterback said.

An animated and upbeat Portis was working at one of the clinic's stations with former Eagles running back - and possible future teammate -- Brian Westbrook and Eagles fullback Leonard Weaver.

"You gotta have fun with these kids, man," Portis said. "Everything isn't competition, competition and you don't always got to be serious. You got to have fun with what you're doing to enjoy it and being able to have fun and learn at the same time is the best way to learn [for the children]."

Asked about his absence at practice, Portis said everything is fine.

"I told [head coach Mike Shanahan] ahead of time so it wasn't like I just didn't show up," Portis said. "I hadn't missed a day until Thursday so everything's cool."

I know the defense has been reported to look better than the offense this year. Is it because of the line backer play? How have the line backers looked during these OTAs, anyone know? Has Rocky signed his tender and has he been at camp? Has any unknown or less famous player flashed at the line backer position?

Defenses always come together faster than offenses. Defense is more about reacting, so once you get your role down, there it is. Offense is more about following a script and in this case, a somewhat lengthy and varied script. The offense will eventually catch up, but I think it is significant that Mike Furrey was signed just last week. Clearly, Shanahan does not believe he has what he is looking for at wide receiver. I think it is surprising the team continues to focus on the free agent market for receivers and doesn't make a move on offensive linemen. I think this speaks volumes about the strong play of the young offensive linemen and, conversely, the lack of production at wide receiver.

As for a standout on defense, Haslett has levied high praise for Lorenzo Alexander and the former defensive end has been practicing with the first team. Alexander is a really smart player and it may be possible that this is just him being able to absorb the playbook faster than the other guys; however, I am hoping this means that a guy who has been the equivalent of a swiss army knife has finally found a home at linebacker. He has always done what the team has asked of him, and I would like to see him get a share of the spotlight...

Alexander appears to be the player making the strongest move to LB in the new 3-4 system? How has he trimmed down to make that move? Thought he was a big guy?

That's true. But I'm thinking they're waiting to see if there's another tackle/guard out there.

Westbrook wants to get paid, sure, but at the moment he's not a starter in Washington, and he may still harbor that ambition. This is a tough guy.

From the Skins' perspective, Westbrook is someone who could also play slot receiver from time to time, and that's an advantage over the other backs.

Posted by: Samson151 | June 13, 2010 9:22 AM | Report abuse

I agree. I think B Westbrook would sign here in a minute, but I also think he just wants more money than what we’re offering so he’s just waiting to see if a better offer comes around. Plus it’s still early and he’s got plenty of time to sign.
If we sign him that means we cut someone else…so who will that be?

Posted by: krystal_ball | June 13, 2010 9:23 AM | Report abuse

I believe there will be several options for pick-ups on the O-line later when pre-season cuts are made. I say not hurry…We just need depth and pre-season cuts could fill that need.

"I believe there will be several options for pick-ups on the O-line later when pre-season cuts are made."

Umm, no.

People have been saying that on here for the last 5-7 years and it's not happened once, not ever.

Nobody is giving up decent OL/DL or they would already be available.

This was Vinny's hope as well and it never materialzed. Look where that got the Redskins.

As far as receivers, I'm sure Shanny has a "type" that he is looking for and then there's always depth. It's not like the Skins have had that for a long time either. They are asking Cooley to runs the receivers routes in practice.

I do find it funny/ironic that Portis has suddenly turned into the "off the field" RB that he should have been when he got here. Hopefully that means a BIG season for him this year on the field.

Could be, but they have watched free agent offensive linemen like Levi Jones and Flozelle Adams just sit out there, where I still think the team is absent an experienced right tackle/potential backup left tackle. I'll grant you those guys are not exactly the 330 pound ballerinas Shanny might prefer in his zone blocking offense, but it seems like a risky proposition relying on the likes of Hicks, Heyer and the newly signed Selvish Capers for left tackle insurance. Maybe, as you say, they are waiting on someone else who might become available, but the hour is getting late...

I don't think he has shed many pounds, but I guess he has great mobility for a big guy. One thing I like about having him back there is he is a good tackler and a guy like B. Jacobs will not want to come to that party in the open field. Negative is dropping him into pass coverage and his range. Haslett was gushing, though, so whatever role he has planned for Alexander, he seems to have taken to it...

mistamoe is on the beat......

I love NFL Replay.

A lil saints v. skins Week 13 action.

I get to relive Kareem Moore's great play get turned into a touchdown.

Again.

And there's L Landry getting burned by Colston's double move for a touchdown.

Again.

On TBS, there's some S Strasburg v. the Cleveland Redskins.

I've heard the rockin' good folks in Cleveland have purchased 10,000 extra tickets just to be bored to death by a kid who can, well, pitch well.

The MLB is slowly being over taking by great pitching now that players eschew PEDS/HGH and amphetimines.

And there's yet another NBA Finals game later on.

(We still have the Celtics winning the thing in 7 games.)

Wimbledon is getting started up.

Hopefully, Serena Williams will just play naked and relieve me of the need to wonder just how big her, um, serve is.

Yes, I will try watching some of the World Cup so that I am more cosmopolitan in my sports viewing.

But I will remain a neanderthal in my respect for the sport of soccer.

All the European players look like the villians from a James Bond movie.

(Excuse me while I remove the tarball that just washed up on this post from the Gulf of Mexico.)

RI is about to hit the cruellest month.

Bloggas must keep this thing alive with more than the occasional dribs of jibba jabba, race baiting, booty talk, weed, dumb cultural references, ObamaHate, or anything else that gets our panties in a bunch.

Otherwise, mid-June to the end of July is all baseball.

That is, until football starts up again.

I think Ray may be right on this one. In the past you would get a round of cuts in June because it was more cap friendly. Without a cap this year there are only going to be cuts because a player is not worthy of a spot on the 55 man roster. I doubt that there will be too many quality players on the open market this summer.

Depends on what you mean by 'decent'. The draft will push some vets out of the picture, others will just get beat out. None are starters, but it's entirely possible a player will be available later in the preseason.

But I'd be a little surprised if barring injury there were any changes in that starting o-line group. They've got to learn to play together as a unit.

The point I was trying to make is that the quality of the players being cut will be low this year. In years with a cap you get cuts of good players with bad contracts. That won't happen this year. If the players being cut this year are better than what is on the Skins that does not bode well for the season. Although the skins do have 3 backup level players starting.

Posted by: campfodder | June 14, 2010 6:14 AM | Report abuse

cf, it's kinda early to make that call because we don't know who's going to be playing that game. Our CB depth chart is far from set (nobody outside of maybe Rogers and Hall are guaranteed jobs in Week 1) and the Cowpies WRs could see some changes if Crayton is dealt like he's been chirping for. So barring injury, we're at least a month away from having any real idea who's going to be playing that game beyond the top 2 guys on each side.

Hate to bring up Haynesworth again, but it's better than frak bating scamp into another epic battle...this is from PFT:

Charles Mann tells Albert Haynesworth: "Just do the work"
Posted by Michael David Smith on June 14, 2010 7:15 AM ET
Former Redskins defensive lineman Charles Mann has joined the growing chorus in Washington ripping current Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth for refusing to participate in voluntary offseason workouts.

In an interview with ESPN 980, Mann said it's ridiculous that Haynesworth is unhappy with his role in the Redskins' new 3-4 defense.

"I mean, just do the work," Mann said, per Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. "He looks more like a nose tackle, and a 3-4's gonna be great for him. You know why a 3-4 would be great? Because all he'll have to do is what he did last year, and that's just fall on the ground, pile it up a little bit and the linebackers roll past you and make the plays, He doesn't even have to make a play in the 3-4."

Noting that Haynesworth is staying away this offseason just a year after signing a $100 million contract, Mann said Haynesworth is an example of an overpaid modern athlete who doesn't appreciate what he's getting.

"Man, lemme tell you this, for a million dollars I would have done all those things, not a hundred million," Mann said. "I mean, you go through it, you're young, and you think this is the way it's supposed to be and this is just regular life, and they have no clue as to the opportunity that they're in the midst of. I'd crawl on the ground backwards for a hundred million dollars."

Mann said "heck no" when asked if Haynesworth -- who says he's been working out on his own -- will show up to the Redskins' upcoming mandatory minicamp in shape. And he said he expects the Redskins to trade Haynesworth just as soon as they get the kind of compensation they're looking for.

"You know what, Mike Shanahan's a smart guy, and he's won some Super Bowls," Mann said. "Just saying that, the next breath would be absolutely. He's just trying to get the right number."

Posted by: brownwood26 | June 14, 2010 7:36 AM | Report abuse

I should say that was from PFT via the SportsBog. Here's a key exerpt PFT missed from the Bog:

The next question was whether the NFL needs to work out some better offseason system, so that every June isn't consumed with stories of who's going to voluntary camp and who isn't. Mann demurred.

"My success is based on the team's," he said. "If the team goes to the playoffs and does well and ultimately gets to the Super Bowl, then guess what, there'll be a lot of All Pros on that team, there'll be a lot of accolades for the individuals. Everything happens if you do well as a team. And so if I'm out there slaving and working my butt off, and Albert is sitting at home cooling it or complaining or whatever, me as a teammate of his is gonna go handle this situation. I don't need Coach Shanahan or anybody else or the league to do anything they need to do. We've got to get to the bottom of this. Is it about winning, or is it about you being comfortable or uncomfortable?"

Posted by: brownwood26 | June 14, 2010 7:39 AM | Report abuse

Mann is 100% right, but he has to realize this is a far different brand of athlete than the ones he played with back in the day. The money is a million times better than it was back then and it creates more issues and a much different locker room atmosphere than the one he's used to. There are still guys who love the game enough to play even if it were for free, but there are many more pampered millionaires. Nowadays, the onus falls on the team to make sure it gets more of the former than the latter.

Moe, not to get a scriptural on folks here but somewhere in the Bible it says (and I'm paraphrasing) that if you're dependable in things of a small nature, it tells people you're dependable in bigger things as well. It's easy to write off June practices as meaningless, but if AH shows up in-shape and looking regular season ready, it makes a huge statement to the coaching staff and to his teammates. The kind of statement that can help boost confidence in a team in desperate need of some.

The difference between 6-10 and 10-6 is small in the grand scheme of things. It'll take a huge effort from everyone to come back big from last season's debacle. AH bringing it from Day 1 to the end of the season would be a huge step in the right direction and everyone is jumping on the guy because it seems that everyone knows this except for AH.

And if that ever gets thru his thick skull, the end of our season could be much later than we think.

I'll never understand why there's always this movement to make soccer popular in the U.S. It's been tried for decades, and still nothing. I can't wait till the people behind this movement quit while they're behind...

And on the flip side of that, I don't get why we feel the need to import football to Europe. It's textbook "arrogant American" attitude..."I like it, therefore so should you". I don't get why we can't have our game and everyone else can have their soccer. I missed the UN summit that mandated that every country like the same things...

"...Celts seem to be winning this series on sheer hustle alone. Phil and Kobe should be ashamed of themselves."

The Lakers are comprised of guys who've spent the last 7 months waiting for Kobe Byrant to pull out victories for them.

That's why there should be shame on their part.

That's also why even when you have a dominating star player like Kobe, as a coach, you're better off emphasizing all-around solid team play.

In any event, the Laker's bench will make a strong case in support of Bryant Tuesday night, but will fade away--again--come game 7.

And that's when the Celtics will collect their trophy and head back East.

NFL Europe (and all its variations) was started for two reasons: A) to spark interest in football in Europe and B) to create a minor league system for fringe NFL talent. Neither was particularly successful and now NFL Europe is defunct.

Like I said...that failed experiment should be the end of importing football, but the NFL won't quit. Playing one game a year in England is beyond lame and I have no idea why the owners just sit idle while the league dicks one of them out of a home game (and all the money that goes with it). Celts defense = outhustle, but Capo Sterno is still on target for his primary mission: a seven game series at all costs..Celts got away with the fouls this time..

It would be nice to have a healthy Pierce in the mix, with Fletch and Lorenzo inside making the plays...I do think he gets tired faster because of the double and triple teams- who wants to always deal with that ?? The European has much more time to eat than the fast-food, double-shift working American..Albert should move to Greece, they start eating at 6 and don't quit til 1 in the morning..They drive around in those weird alien Japanese trucks that I want with one wheel in front that they don't sell over here either ...You can load the back up with lambs and onions and shishkabob to your hearts content..Or whatever else you have in mind, scamp...

There were american football leagues in europe before NFL europe. Granted they weren't as high profile.

It's not like the NFL walked in completely blind. Obviously they couldn't maintain the level they wanted to.

But to say it was completely uncalled for is incorrect. Interest was sparked, but it could not be cultivated further.

As much as I hate Kobe, that was an impressive show he put on for 15 minutes last night... for once he wasn't trying to be MJ... he wasn't making stupid faces or b!tching to teammates or refs.. he was just putting the ball in the cup with abandon... gotta respect that.

That being said, he still is shooting under 30% in the 4th quarter of this series.... that's not gonna get it done.

Cs just seem like the better team at this point, but still a long way to go. Ray is gonna have to show up in L.A.

Frak - Cs got away with the fouls?? Even WITH the intentional fouling at the end, the Cs got whistled for more fouls and the Lakers shot 13 more FTs. In two of the Lakers LOSSES, they shot 15 more and 13 more FTs respectively. How much more one sided can the officiating be???

Gulp, I'm guessing that Game 6 is going to be the answer....

Sad part is the other side of that plan, to develop more talent was moderately successful, but should have been done state side... Ryp, not to nitpick here, but Kobe has been trying to be MJ in so many ways and for so long, he probably doesn't even realize he's doing it anymore. I mean, I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if he studied film of MJ taking a sh*t just so he could emulate his intensity on the crapper. Last night he may have toned down the b*tching and what not, but the only time he's not copying Jordan is when he's asleep.

That's the main reason I can't really get into Kobe...I have no respect for a guy who so blatantly rips his entire persona off another guy. Even if it is Jordan. A player of Kobe's skill and marketability should be crafting his own brand, not riding MJ's.

"... we did NFL Europe was because of all the x-pats and sincere interest in the sports....though, there's no need for the US to fall for soccer and no need to push it on us."

Demographics give away the reason behind the heavy investment that both ESPN/FOX Sports have made in soccer.

Hispanics are the second largest identifiable ethnic group in America.

And--if I can stereotype just abit--it's safe to say that Brazilians, Peruvians, Columbians, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Costa Ricans, Dominican Republicans, etc. all love soccer.

(And you can throw in the Jamicans, Bahamians, Haitians, and Nigerians who also now populate these shores.)

So while one segment of the American populace feels soccer is being forced on it, the other wants more thrust its way.

And usually, when it comes to thrusting, the person who wants more of it, gets it to all pleasurable degrees.

In another generation, soccer might be edging out a lot of traditional American sports for popuality.

It looked to me like the calls evened out down the stretch.

Ray's not shooting a great % outside of that one game, but is anyone talking about the energy he's expending on the defensive end? He's been playing some nice D on Kobe. Ray is in Kobe's front pocket and forcing Kobe into LOTS of tough shots (though he's hitting them, Kobe is that good)

Interesting stat - Ray is perfect from the FT line this series. He needs to attack the basket more.

I don't think it will. The owners won't kill it because there is real money to be made there. It goes beyond the ticket sales. Added jersey sales, advertising and promotional item sales pour into the big profitability pot. International expansion won't go away. The Bills are now playing a regular season game and a preseason game each year in Toronto with major interest, and I think there is a day on the horizon when we will see a team - probably the Bills - based in Toronto. The NFL sees the worldwide viewership for the Super Bowl and major dollar signs start shining in their eyes. They are looking for a way to tap that market with games other than the Super Bowl, and as it usually does, persistance will eventually pay off with a model that has expansion into other continents.

Pfunk - good point about Ray's defense. He's doing a great job on 24. Refs have done a pretty good job of staying out of the way the past 2 games except for the last 5 minutes last night, but I suspect that comes to an end in game 6.

My thoughts exactly - Artest seems to stumble through a bunch of bad defensive lapses a game.

When he gets the ball on offense, he's totally clueless. He dribbles in a circle and then gets stripped, if he's not missing a jumper.

I wonder if they are missing Trevor Ariza - not as talented or athletic as Artest but at least the guy played like he knew what was happening on the court.

American football won't catch on worldwide. Ever.

It's way too hard to understand for most folks who haven't grown up watching it.

To the middle paragraph, "that's what she said".

Sorry...I just can't help myself.

I disagree with your greater point, simply because the Hispanic groups you're referring to will want to see the soccer teams they grew up rooting for, not the watered down USA version that MLS is serving up. With more sports channels than you can kick a ball at (including no less than about 4 ESPN channels alone), overseas soccer will always be shown to those who want to see it.

THere's a market to broadcast more European soccer into the States. I know plenty of folks (including myself) who watch alot of European soccer live-streaming on their computers, and over the past couple years, the websites that offer that have exploded.

But it's a tricky market to tap into.

Not just Hispanics, but any hardcore soccer fan is always going to prefer watching European soccer over the MLS - it's simply a better sporting product. That's the problem that MLS is facing.

Just because we are white Americans, doesn't mean we don't know the difference in quality soccer.

I'll tell you Pau is still a good player. Pau can't shoot if he's not getting the ball in the post. And because nobody except Kobe can hit an outside shot, when he does get the ball he's not getting clean looks in the post because of the sagging help.

Celts D is outstanding; gotta give 'em credit for that. Pierce and Rondo handle their biz.

The Lakers starters were all in "minus" except for Artest who was "0".

The Celtics starters were all in the "plus".

It's amazing to me b/c after watching this series so far, I truly believe that Pau Gasol is the "best" big-man in the series and Kobe Bryant is the "best" guard in the series.

But who is the better "team"?

So far C's are up 3-2...if this continues, the C's might actually convince me to believe in pro-basketball again.

Hang in there, alex.

The first round of group-stage games are typically the slowest. It's the stratgey associated with the tourny. Teams come out a little tenative. No one wants to get blown out in their first game. No one wants to concede anything early. The players are finding their rhythm and legs, etc.

As things move to a stage of the tourney when its "do-or-die" it will pick up...

I hope you didn't think that's what I was saying because it's not...I was following Moe's stated generalization, that I think skews mostly true in 2010.

But I think that's the underlying issue with soccer in America...most born-and-bred Americans watch only American brand sports. It's obvious that most up here watch NBA basketball, but I doubt a lot up here watch European basketball (even though it's probably a better product right now).

Same with soccer...while the far superior product is in Europe, a lot of American fans aren't going to get up at 5 am to watch Man U. They'll try (and fail) to get into MLS (or whatever other league crops up after MLS dies off).

Alex, I don;t know if you've ever played soccer, but it's the opposite.

These guys make something incredibly difficult look routine.

Try this:

Find a buddy of yours who doesn't play soccer, and the 2 of you go out to a field. You stand inside the 16 yard box, and have your buddy stand off to the side close to the sideline. Have your buddy try to launch (in the air) some passes to you and you try to hit them with your head - try to angle them with any sort of authority/conviction anywhere on the goal frame.

See how many tries you guys go through before (1) your buddy is able to accurately place the pass close enough to you to get a decent header on it, and (2) you are actually able to re-direct the ball onto goal with any kind of power/accuracy.

Then both of you imagine doing that several times a game, running at full speed with other players blocking/jumping/grappling with you.

I’m not a hater, but I just can’t get into the World cup. I can get why some folks love it so much, to each his own. I tried to watch some of the USA vs England on Saturday, but I only lasted about 20 minutes. 10 minutes of which was spent watching the US goalkeeper being tended to after he was horribly injured as he slid into an English player. The twenty or so replays were inconclusive as far as determining exactly how he was injured, but boy was that a close one. The dude probably would have died if not for the fast reactions of all of the doctors that were on scene. And these must be the best doctors in the world, because they somehow (in the field mind you, not some fancy hospital with millions of dollars worth of medical equipment) patched the guy up and he continued to play. This confirmed my suspicions that Albert Haynesworth has been missing the OTA’s because he was brought in as a consultant for the USA world cup team. You are going to see much better flopping around and award winning acting performances when these guys take a spill this year. AH has been coaching them up.

And just another observation/question: Why don’t they actually stop the clock when stuff like that happens?

"Kobe has been trying to be MJ in so many ways and for so long, he probably doesn't even realize he's doing it anymore. I mean, I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if he studied film of MJ taking a sh*t just so he could emulate his intensity on the crapper. Last night he may have toned down the b*tching and what not, but the only time he's not copying Jordan is when he's asleep."

Care to list actual examples of this "biting" (emulation) besides the comparisons the media force feeds you to believe?

Kobe on more than one occasion has said that he has no wishes to be "Like Mike", that he wishes that people would cut back their constant comparisons.

The only thing that Kobe shares with Jordan is his intensity and drive to win.

Does Kobe emulate his game? Yeah, but what's new? The previous generation always has their game mocked by the current generation of superstars. Jordan patented his game after Julius Erving and David Thopmson... and, so what? No one ever gives Jordan "oh he tries to be like" so-and-so label, why do it with Kobe?

The "Kobe tries to be like Jordan" crap needs to stop.

* Phil Jackson coached both Kobe and Jordan.

* Kobe shoots the fadeway shot, so did Jordan. (I'm almost certain that Jordan DID NOT invent the shot himself)

In what other ways are they alike? What, 'cause Kobe wears his hair short or that he leaped into the air after winning the finals last year?

Please. Spare me the Kobe tries to be like Mike stuff. If there is anyone that obsesses with Jordan it's Lebron James. LERBON is the one ALWAYS mentioning Micheal Jordan. When asked why he chose '23' he said that he looked up to Jordan. Lebron only wants to change the number from 23 to 6 because Jordan refuses to acknowledge any of the current NBA stars as "the next one".

And, Kobe had every right to "b*tch" at his teammates last night? You probably weren't watching so let me clue you in on his teammates play on the floor last night:

Sh*tty

That's it. That is all.

"Phil and Kobe should be ashamed of themselves."

Kobe should be ashamed of himself?

Dude, you clearly aren't watching these games to make a complete off base statement like this.

The dude had 38 last night. Has scored over 30 three times in five game.

Gawddamn, care to lay ANY of the blame at the feet of his teammates? Ron Artest, no? Lamar Odom, no?

No one has ever did it on their own. Jordan won titles with a top 50 all-time great. Who in the post Shaq era has Kobe had that would even crack 75? 90?

P1, I played soccer until i was probably 13. I was an assistant coach for kids for 3 years after that. Since I am one of the least athletic people on the face of the earth that should tell you all you need to know.

Here is the problem I have with the pro-game. I see a guy driving at the goal he has one guy totally out of position between him and the goalie and all he needs to do is kick the ball at the 66% of the goal thats open to him. Instead he holds up and tries to pass it to someone else to make the goal. Now all the stuff going on midfield I get, its not easy to get in striking distance, but I felt like there is far too much passivity once players do.

No, dl, you're a hater.

Do this - find a pro athlete who goes about 190. Have him put on some soccer cleats. Stand about 40 yards apart from each other. Both of you go into a dead sprint. A couple yards before you collide, you slide on the grass with your arms out and ribs exposed. Have your pro athlete friend go into a slide cleat-first.

Tell us afterwards if you can "conclusively" figure out why you might have a hard time getting up afterwards.

Howard took a cortisone shot at half-time to continue the game - he may have broken ribs.

Seriously...do the haters out there deliberately try to sound stupid when they criticize?

Red, I've got no issue with him trying to model his game after MJ...hell, anyone under the age of 35 who's ever shot a basketball has done that. It's ripping off MJ's PERSONA that irks me about him.

Find some video of an MJ presser and compare it to a Kobe presser today. He tries to talk like Mike, I've seen him do the same fist pump to the floor after a game winner like Mike, and I've even seen him do the tongue thing Mike used to do.

So I get you like Kobe and the Lakers and to each his own...but anyone who's been a fan of Jordan during the Bulls glory years knows that Kobe is doing his damnedest to be EXACTLY like Mike.

And just to clarify, I wasn't saying that last night's loss was Kobe's fault with the "they should be ashamed of themselves" remark...just sayin' that Phil and Kobe are the clear leaders of that team and it seemed like they couldn't get the other guys to fall in line for a game they had to win.

Indeed. It isn't like Kobe is going out there and laying eggs all by himself. No one has been a real second option except Pau Gasol who was a NON-FACTOR last night.

Pau was getting his 'ish tossed by Tony Allen and being out-boarded by Rajon Rondo... you know... dudes who're under 6'5"

I would be more than willing and ready to admit that if Kobe were truly biting Jordan's style at every opportunity. Kobe slamming his fist on the floor, may have to do with Mike a little, but slapping the floor or fist bumping the floor can be traced back to college ball. As far as the tongue wag, yeah that's a Jordan trademark, but guess what, Steve Nash does it too. Never hear anyone accuse him of swagger jacking Jordan...

Kobe talks like Jordan? I gotta admit, that's the first time I've ever heard that one. But I just add that one into the '1,001 reasons people hate Kobe Bryant'. Talks like Jordan. Dude, you don't know Kobe Bryant, I'm willing to bet that you've never been within 500 yards of the man. But somehow you know him well enough to be able to determine if he's talking like Jordan or not? I think I know where you rank with the Kobe haters.

You're with the group that were big Jordan fans or all out adored him. It makes those of your ilk sick that there is somone in the game that compares with him, when just 10 years ago, we were all sure that there would never even be anyone close to Jordan.

All big time Jordan fans HATE Kobe Bryant. I get that. They want to always remember Jordan as the greatest to ever do it and ever will. They see Kobe on the court, and his demeanor and persona, and it reminds them of Jordan. And I'll agree. Great minds and minds of a winner will think alike.

Doesn't mean the ones trying to copy the other.

It's easy to "suck" when you don't get any touches or clean looks but I guess you didn't see that.

In other news, Kendall Gill is the world's first and foremost Jordan imitator. From the tongue wag to the wristband near the elbow. The only thing he lacked was the mental fortitude and game to match.

It's way too hard to understand for most folks who haven't grown up watching it.

I'm not exactly sure where you're going with that last question...I mean, none of us here KNOW these guys personally. We cobble together opinions of guys based on what they reveal in public, mostly what we see of them on the court. And from what I've seen of Kobe on the court, and from every single interview and presser of his I've watched on TV, I've seen him bite everything from MJ's speech patterns to his mannerisms. Take a look for yourself and draw your own conclusions if you like. I'm not making this sh*t up, I'm just telling you what I see.

I'll admit I used to like Kobe when Shaq was there. But once that messy divorce went down, I lost respect for the guy. Whether his "I wanna win a title by myself like Jordan did" thing was real or perceived, he at best played a major role in tearing apart one of the greatest dynasties the NBA has seen and I haven't much cared for him ever since.

I think you have a point with your Jordan fan/Kobe hater "diagnosis" at the end of your post, but I'm not sure that would apply to me since I fully expect someone to surpass Jordan one day. It always happens. Nobody thought they'd see the high-flying exploits of Dr. J. again, yet here comes MJ just a few years later. And after we thought nobody could electrify the dunk contest like 'Nique or MJ, here comes Vince Carter. Everyone is quick to anoint someone as "there'll never be another", yet there almost always is. So any perceived "hate" I have for Kobe, is purely based on Kobe, not some man-love for MJ.

ga, ask those people, including yourself, if they're Kobe Bryant fans. I'm sure an overwhelming percentage would be 'NO'.

And have you ever notice that the "haters" will make any "observation" whether real or conjured to fuel their anti-Kobe bias?

Again, there is nothing wrong if you don't like Kobe, don't like to see him win, or just a plain hater. He's the NBA heel or villain, and has been ever since he declared himself eligible for the NBA draft. People started to hate him then because they felt he was being too flashy (shades on during his "press conference") and too arrogant (deciding to skip college and go straight to the NBA).

The NBA needs people like Kobe "so you can point your f%#ing fingers and say 'that's the bad guy'".

* The "rape victim" had five different semen samples in her panties. Sorry, but "Snow White" was a big fat freak body. And what "rape victim" goes and brags to friends about being butt trucked?

* Jordan never had any rape allegations, true. But Jordan was a known philanderer. Had a marriage that ended because of it.

So lets not try and paint Jordan as some white knight when comparing him and Kobe OFF the court.

Reason 1,002 on the list of 'Why We Hate Kobe'. Just after "He leaped into the air after beating the Orlando Magic in the NBA finals in 2009, and in doing so tried to copy Micheal Jordan".

I'll be honest I don't exactly know why I hate Kobe Bryant. I just do. I didn't like him when he first came to the NBA and I still don't. I think it was him trying to call out Jordan in the All-Star game that did it for me.

I don't like LeBron either. No particular reason, I just don't.

My favorite player in the league now is D-Wade. I've liked him since his rookie year.

- Ray

Posted by: rmcazz

I think Ray may be right on this one. In the past you would get a round of cuts in June because it was more cap friendly. Without a cap this year there are only going to be cuts because a player is not worthy of a spot on the 55 man roster. I doubt that there will be too many quality players on the open market this summer.

Gotta disagree about picking up a o-lineman. Last year we dropped Jeremy Bridges who went on to start at LT and RT at points in the season, also did a great job standing up Jared Allen in one game.
Their is always a team dropping credible players for various reason( skins reasoning being Cerrato, ugh).
If you have the personnel in place to pick up talent that gets dropped you will be fine, this is what the pats ans steelers do regularly. We will most likely have Hicks starting at RT with Heyer backing up. Im sure we will be able to find a player similar to their caliber, most likely better then Heyer.

I think most of us played organized sports in some fashion growing up. I ran track and played basketball.

If I vision myself on a team I think, hey would I want to play with that guy. If they think they are beter than you(which they are), but even so they make it a point to let you know.

I don't mind playing basketball with someone who is immensley better than me, but Kobe is a ball hog and I hate that.

That's why nobody hates on Garnett. He came straight out of High School, he (for a long time) was better than everyone else, but he's a team player. Even though he's better than you, he seems like a good team mate to play with. He seems he would treat you exactly the same.

Thus concluding my "Why I hate Kobe" thesis.

No. He can run block better then Heyer right now but needs to work on his pass protection. The oline last year almost got Jerrett Brown killed , he got physically knocked out of two games. Though that was mainly due to a porous left side their were times where he messed up.

I think Slevish is more of a project for them due to his inexperience. he has only played 3 years of Oline his entire life, only starting for 2 1/2 years. he is a converted Tight End didnt move to the line until his soph year. In that time he started nearly every game after he took over the position and has blocked for some of the most prolific runners in recent college memory, Pat White, Steve Slaton, Noel Devine. He is used to a zone scheme formation having played in a spread option read offense his entire college career. Though early on in his career Rodriguez was primarily a run only offense, the most recent O coordinator has a more emphasized passing attack which helped him gain a bit more knowledge in pass protection schemes.

So to answer your question I believe that inexperience will hold him back until he can adequately adjust to nfl style pass protection. But right now i would rather him play then Heyer, he would be better in the run game and prob no worse in protection. Still I think Hicks will grab the starting spot due to his experience and versatility.

"...simply because the Hispanic groups you're referring to will want to see the soccer teams they grew up rooting for, not the watered down USA version that MLS is serving up."

That is my point.

I wasn't arguing that the nation demographic shift meant the MLS's fortunes would improve, but that soccer aficianados would maintain their overall love for the sport in general.

I don't know if you want this.

The redskins should be a right-handed power running team, and with that being a stated strenght, maybe a rookie would be better in a back up capacity.

However, what we should all fear is any kind of injury to M Williams, D Dockery, or A Hicks as there's questionable depth at rg/rt/lg.

Luck this year would be no injuries on the o-line and a drafted rt and lg next Spring.

Let Capers and Cook spend the year learning before projecting them into the starting lineup.

So seriously guys, what did you think of the Tonys?

I thought Sean Hayes did a fine job, and K. Zeta-Zones has a singing voice like Dan Ackroyd. Green day's lyircs are pale copies of the truely breakthru stuff on the sixties and seventies. I think for some movie stars, I think it was in their contract that if they did aplay, they'd win a Tony.

Okay yeah, I watched the Tonys. Better than Soccer.

Pac-Man Jones

Albert Haynesworth

^ Agree with that. I think if they had that 2nd round this year they would have drafted another oline. We do still have a need a LB but I will be happy to go back to emphasizing oline play. Fell that that will be our greatest focus next year in the draft as well. And after one more year of FA pick ups and draft player development we may start having a credible o-line again. Im still amazed that this of any franchise would let their oline fll into such disarray.

Don't forget the most important one of all: left tackle. Our backup is none other than he-of-the-broken-shutter-imitation Stephon Heyer. And, that's if the rookie steps into the sizeable shoes that Chris Samuels left for him. I have worries still about the o-line. There are some young guys there that could step up, but I think we're short a grizzled veteran backup tackle. Isn't Flozelle still out there?

Just to add to this... Shanny and crew have been very quiet about the o-line. While they are snagging free agent wide receivers front, left and center, they have not made a move on offensive linemen. I find this encouraging. Maybe more of last year's o-line deficiencies could be hung on protection schemes than we thought...

350 as listed. Played like 400 but may be on the 365 range. I don't think Haynesworth is actually 350 last year.. which may be why he's gone solo to lose weight privately so he could get back in playing shape. I certainly hope he's not fooling around with diet pills as they actually do more harm than good. If I were Shanahan, I'd make him take a complete physical before camp.

http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/2010/06/01/133-the-world-cup/

Every four years the planet comes together to celebrate the World Cup and since white people make up a portion the world, they are not immune to the excitement.

However, before you start planning out long watching sessions with white people you should be aware of exactly why white people get so excited about the World Cup. Though you may be waiting on baited breath for your favorite sport on a global scale, white people like the World Cup because it allows them to pretend they are European for a few weeks, and more importantly, it allows them to get drunk at odd hours.

Virtually every white person you speak to about the World Cup is incapable of remembering any actual event that took place during a game but can, with near total recall, remember how they got very drunk on Sangria during a Spain-Paraguay match at five in the morning.

From reading the above paragraph, the sharper ones among you have likely noticed that clever white people also adore the World Cup because it allows them to pair countries with their respective alcoholic drink.

“England is playing Argentina? Dude we gotta get some Newcastle then like, I don’t know, like some wine I guess?”

This plan will be consummated with a high five, a trip to Trader Joes, and the purchase of a soccer jersey that will be worn, on average, twice a decade.

Someone finally did it. Now you're the lucky one who gets to play Plinko.

Posted by: iH8dallas | June 14, 2010 2:46 PM | Report abuse

It’s also worth noting the amazing interest shown by white women in the World Cup. While they generally find most professional sporting events to be boring, the atmosphere at a World Cup match is much more amenable. Mostly because they don’t have to drink light beer and there is a good chance that they might meet a European man, or, at least someone who might be planning a trip there. This is far superior to a hockey game where, at best, they might meet a Canadian. It goes without saying that for white women, the World Cup can’t come soon enough.

Of course, hosting a themed party around one of the games is a sure fire way to increase your popularity with white people, but at the end of the day it does not increase your bottom line. No, during the World Cup, the most profit to be made will come from betting on the games with white people. Not only will they have plenty of disposable income, they will follow the following betting patterns:

England is good
Brazil is good
Italy is good
Teams from Africa are cute underdogs and thus always worth a bet.
When it comes to talking about the event, it goes without saying that you should probably avoid trying to talk to white people about any of the actual players in the World Cup aside from the biggest stars. Most white people cobble their soccer knowledge together from UK celebrity gossip and a few games of FIFA on the Wii.

But if you do find yourself talking to a white person who actually knows a lot about soccer you are probably talking to a European, or worse, a white guy who tries too hard.

The latter is especially dangerous, as they have likely been waiting for years to meet someone to converse with about “football” and with soccer’s year round schedule, they will never leave you alone.

Most white folk think Soccer is for Jr. High and areas south of Texas.

The 2009 All Pro defensive ends

1st team:
Jared Allen, Dwight Freeney
2nd team:
trent cole, Julius Peppers

Supposedly, there are the 4 best DE's in football. So how many games will our rookie LT, Trent Williams play vs these 4 guys?

Oh yeah, Mario Williams didn't make All Pro and demarcus ware was All Pro as an LB.

Portis better have his 'A' game in pass protection.
