Coach Joe Is On The Warpath/Moss Doubtful

Wow, Coach Joe wanted no part of the media today (can't blame him for that) and engaged in some of testy exchanges. Made for good theatre.

Okay, Ill get back to that in a minute. First the news.

Santana did not practice and is listed as doubtful. He didn't rule himself out, but after not practicing all week and just running a few routes Gibbs did not sound like he would play. Said there is a chance Santana could take warmups Sunday and maybe sneak into the active roster, but it sounded remote.

Also, Lloyd was back to practice and Mike Sellers missed most of practice with his heel injury, largely as a precaution.

As for Coach Gibbs, he certainly had his game face on. Any reporter who has been around here more than 30 seconds learned long ago that coach Joe is never going to say much the later you get in the week and people looking for flowery quotes on Friday in particular are barking up the wrong tree.

Today he was downright ornery - and if I'm a Skins fan I'm all in favor of that. He looked like he was ready to crack a head or two if need be. It started off well enough but after 90 seconds he got worked up, his arms started pumping. The man was animated

It started when one of the guys from the Times (DLD) mentioned the 0-20 record the Lions have here in DC - something Gibbs already talked about earlier in the week - and the man started getting a lather. "It's ridiculous," Gibbs started, and then went on a rant. Segued into: "We won Super Bowls here before, right now we can't win anything." He then dropped a "swinging soul" bomb - about as close as this man will ever get to cursing. "We need to get A win someWAY, and it's going to take every swinging soul we've got." (Am I the only one who smells a Swinging Soul T-shirt here?).

Seemed like this would be a good time to let the man walk, and Coach Joe was already heading towards the locker room as he concluded this response, then my fellow Baltimoron, Jerry Coleman from Sportstalk 980 alluded to some comments that Gibbs allegedly made to George Michael during an interview about wanting to run the ball 70 percent of the time, and I turned the recorder off and just took it all in.

Coach Joe must have grunted the word balance six times in the exchange. "I have never said that my entire life! It's balance." (This reminded me of two things - a geology professor I has in Syracuse who would randomly yell out "Balance!" during his lectures to wake people up who fell asleep, and also the dude in Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science" video, whose yelling "Science!" in the background.)

So, now we're ready to play some football! That's what I'm talking about. Bring on the Lions.

Maybe we could title it, "Brandon Lloyd Flops".

I LOVE IT! thats what this team needs is a dose of bitter nastiness. The meaner Gibbs gets the better. I want him chewing nails by Sunday morning and I want our boys to be cracking skulls all over the field.

The O needs to run up the score on the Lions joke of a defense and the D needs to teach Kitna et al that their greatest show on turf BS doesn't play on the grass battle fields of the NFC east. We got to lay a hurt on them at least as nasy as philly did.

Well, an unhappy correspondent named Redcoat, late of London, wrote to say he disagreed with our assessment of soccer as a particularly boring sport compared to football. While he had interesting things to say about rugby (also known as "thugs in striped shirts"- Editor's Note), Mr. Redcoat tried to defend soccer's non-stop action, compared to timeouts and huddles in real (American) football. Well, Mr. Redcoat is probably a fine bloke, but how does he explain the fact that at any given time in a soccer game, 80% of the players are standing still or shuffling around, whistling Milli Vanilli tunes and waving to their girlfriends in the stands? Meanwhile, there are riots going on in the bleachers and in the parking lot. Sorry, Mr. Redcoat, but the action should be on the field, even if it means only 15 seconds of real violence every minute.

A special thanks to RB in Maryland, who had wonderful things to say about my books and also asked my recommendation for a wine that goes well with Popeye's Chicken. Well, RB, I don't know about you, but I really like the extra spicy chicken with a chilled glass of Riunite Lambrusco. It really hits the spot, and always reminds me of the time I was in the Italian section of Atlanta, but that's another story for another time.

He gave Henry a big FA contract knowing he was on his third strike and was predicting a 1500 yd season from him this year. They've got a great system no doubt but they haven't been nearly as dominant since CP left, particularly late in the game and in the red zone. So yes, I think this will definetely sting Shanahan.

I wonder what got the guy so fired up? It couldn't have been the question about the Lions not winning here. Who's in contract negotiations (that could have pooped today)? Did something bad happen with the racing team? Did he get some news about a player that he wasn't expecting ... is the league getting ready to suspend somebody? Did a player or coach just fess up to him first about some off-field whoopsie?

Or was it just straight up piss offedness about lacksidaisium? Was this the last practice before the game?

The fire is encouraging, but hopefully it was inspired by football-game-winning reasons and not something nefarious.

Someone has kidnapped the real Peter King or he has started drinking. 2 positive points in his outlook for the weekend.

2. This is the week for the Redskins' Clinton Portis to make the quantum leap to big fantasy player. He's playing the Lions, he finally feels close to normal, and Joe Gibbs is going to feed him a lot.

3. I really like Washington's Jason Campbell this week, and not just because he's going up against the Leos. I like him because he's starting to show signs, in practice and games, of being the kind of accurate passer he was at Auburn. Now, he may have to use Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell this week, which could be a worry, because he hasn't had much practice time with him. I still think it's going to be a big day for Campbell.

Posted by: JAH | October 5, 2007 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Man, this reminds me of an encounter I had with Coach Gibbs during the 1991 SB season. (and Stev Buckhantz telling Gibbs b4 the 91 season that Playboy mag., had picked them to win it all) I was shooting a "inspirational" video at Redskins Park (the old park) with some players and coaches, to be used for a firm that was having a meeting at Lansdowne. The Skins were still undefeateded at that time, with the Cardinals on deck. The question was asked of Gibbs of "how he thought they would do against the Cardinals". Gibbs was gratious as ever to the Cards, "tough game, division opponent" etc.. I somehow got the courage to speak up just as he was finishing his sentence with "If WE RUN THE BALL". DOH! Gibbs got instantly out of his cherub face and looked me straight in the eye and said "what?" I had no choice but to repeat the stupid stupid statement. I thought right at that moment how serious this man really is. How intense. I could see him choking the life out of me right then and there.
Best part is, I have it all on tape. I have only had the courage to show this embarrassing moment to a select few...and then only once.
I told Joe Gibbs to run the ball.

Rocky MacIntosh, near the top of the second round, was the 7th outside LB picked in the 2006 draft. There were a TON of good OLBs in that draft.

The second OLB picked, Ernie Sims, was picked 9th in that draft, and he leads the Lions in tackles. This week, Sims said this as he talked about Washington QB Jason Campbell: "As a linebacker corps, I really believe that we've just got to read the quarterback's eyes and break on him because I think we're going to have a lot of opportunities to have some interceptions."

For his own good, Mr. Sims should be cursing like a swinging soul because he has JINXED himself and his fellow LBs. JINX!

So Coach was stone cold wrong. He said it. I guess he didn't REMEMBER saying it, but it's not very smart to get all shirty about something that you actually DID SAY, clear as day.

Somehow that's what I'm thinking soul swinging is like. Is it more of a sideways-sideways-arms swaying motion, or more of a bop-up-and-down-arms-flying motion?

How can I be St. Joe for Halloween without knowing such things?

I'm an old skool hip hop fan and a 70's baby... and I swear I've been listening to "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen and it's one of my favorite songs of all time (Queen too!) They are the rock version of Earth, Wind and Fire!!! RIP to Freddie Mercury.

I just picked up The Band (1969) on CD. This is some amazing sjk, and it was just not working out trying to play the record in the car.

EW&F, awesome. In line to pay at Borders, I saw that someone had ditched an EWF CD atop some pumpkin carving literature, and I almost bought it. But I am not a big greatest hits guy. My wife and I were at an EWF show once, and we were shakin' it so good that we received the ultimate complement. A black couple came up and invited us to their church. Sadly, I don't church.

ESPN insider advanced scouting report:

Will the Detroit passing attack be too much for the Washington defense?

The Lions' offense is based on QBJon Kitna throwing the ball to a talented stable of wide receivers. Wideouts Roy Williams, Mike Furrey, and Shaun McDonald have been very productive this season in offensive coordinator Mike Martz's passing attack, and the offense will continue to produce as long as the offensive line is able to keep Washington defenders off Kitna. Redskins' defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has seen the tape from last weekend's win over Chicago and knows that pressure on Kitna will affect the productivity of Detroit's offense.

Another factor that will dictate how well Kitna does this Sunday is the Redskins' secondary, led by FS Sean Taylor. They have had a week to get talented players like CBs Shawn Springs, Carlos Rogers and Fred Smoot and rookie SS LaRon Landry healthy and come up with a scheme to confuse Kitna and give the Detroit offense looks it's not accustomed to seeing. The Redskins defense will be ready for Jon Kitna and the passing game on Sunday.

Can the Lions stop Clinton Portis and the Redskins' running game?
The Detroit defensive, line led by DTs Shaun Rogers and Cory Redding, is capable of denting the line of scrimmage and keeping Portis' yards to a minimum. The Lions have improved against the run in the past few weeks but their biggest test of the season is coming this week. The Redskins' offensive line has been playing well as a unit has had the bye week to get even more in sync. Washington is a top-10 rushing offense on the strength of offensive line coach Joe Bugel's tried and true counter and power gap schemes as well as inside and outside zone plays. The line is disciplined in its technique and the Redskins do a solid job of controlling time of possession with the running game. It will be difficult for Detroit LBs Boss Bailey and Paris Lenon to stop Portis, who should get 100-plus yards against an overmatched defense.

How can Detroit better its chances to win?
The Lions chances of winning the game will increase if they get the ground game going. It's true that Detroit has won three games practically without running the football, but Martz and head coach Rod Marinelli have to find a way to eat up more of the clock and keep the defense off the field. Throwing the ball as much as the Lions do makes for shorter possessions. The Lions don't have to rush for 200 yards to win this game, just make Washington aware that they're capable of being productive. That will make the Redskins respect the running game and open up more play-action, and the more things the Redskins have to worry about the less time they have to concentrate on what the Lions do best, which is throw the ball.

Scouts' Edge

The bye week will pay off for the Redskins at home against the Lions. After performing the usual self-scout during week off Washington should improve in all facets of the game. The team that controls the clock should win this game and the Redskins have the better running game and are more capable of doing that. Washington QB Jason Campbell is improving every week and getting more comfortable with the offense and the two weeks the Redskins have had to game plan for the Lions will help him.

Detroit pass for a lot of yards and Kitna will get the ball to his playmakers. The Lions will move the ball down the field but the Washington defense will keep them from finishing drives with touchdowns. The Redskins will play well at home this weekend and should get their third win of the season.

Prediction: Redskins 28, Lions 23

Ahh P Diddy you are thinking of the 91 team?
Jacoby actually started at RT
Somebody help me out here, what I can't recall is by the 91 season was Bostic starting C or was Raleigh McKenzie?

I vote Stephen Alexadner as best #80. Didn't he go onto Denver and have a solid if not florid career?

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:16 PM | Report abuse

You know it becomes confusing after awhile because Bugel over the years had
Jacoby at LT ,and RT
McKenzie at LG and C
Grimm at C then LG
Bostic I think was always C

So for the 91 team I "think" it was
Lachey, McKenzie, Bostic, Schlereth, Jacoby
And off the bench were
G- Grimm [he was losing it his last few years]
T- Simmons

Am I missing anyone?

I believe McKenzie started, but Bostic played quite a bit. Was Jacoby on that team as well?

LT Jacoby

Okay here are the starters for SB 1991

LT Lachey

I've been catching up on all the posts from today and I have to say I'm amazed at the amount of disrespect directed at Gibbs. I just don't understand it. Maybe it's because I suffered for years before He came along and delivered 3 superbowl championship teams in 9 years.

Let me ask you this: Would you rather we have Norv, Marty, or Spurrier leading the Skins? I think not. What has Gibbs done for this organization since his return?

1. instant credibility
2. hope
3. playoff win
4. consistency

I'll be the 1st to admit I had higher hopes and we have not achieved as much as we hoped for. But remember, Gibbs inherited a team in disarray, and he has turned it around and has them on the right track. So lighten up and enjoy him while he's here. A few years from now you may be reminiscing about the halcyon days during Gibbs tenure.

Redskin Ray,

In my humble opinion, Wilbur Marshall was the missing ingredient. Once he joined the Skins, good things happened. He was incredible. My lasting image of him is seeing him airborne, parallel to the ground, delivering a knockout blow. How we got him from the da Bears was criminal(plan B).

Posted by: cosmofla | October 5, 2007 11:06 PM | Report abuse

Hey Cosmofla,
I too love Coach Joe
In my post I was just pointing out to me a clear transition for him today was the Brandon Lloyd q.
He got really serious when he answered that one, and it was an intense coach Joe from that moment on...

I love Coach for bringing us the victories, and yes, I do recall the winning days of George Allen, the three years of jack pardee, and I even recall as a little kid, Lombardi and Bill Austin.

You live in FL?

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 11:06 PM | Report abuse

Charley Casserly was the best at getting guys via Plan B, but actually we got Wilber via 2 1RD picks!!!

We won the SB so had the last pick and figured we could get rid of two of them for Wilber.

Yep, you guessed it, I was in college!!
Haven't ever seen the game since just a couple of plays on highlights.

I even contacted Redskins.com pleading with them to put the game on DVD but they never responded.

Anyway you know I can get my hands on that game to see it?

I had the good fortune to meet Coach Lombardi as a kid while playing CYO ball. Larry Brown was there as well. I remember Allen and Pardee. But my lasting memory of the Allen era is losing to the Dolphins(the bain of my existence). What sweet revenge beating them for our 1st championship. Didn't Pardee have cancer?

Posted by: cosmofla | October 5, 2007 11:14 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Pardee had cancer when playing for the Rams, had to miss a season or two and then returned.

I recall when he was with the Skins they referenced this frequently.

Yep, in FL as well.

I definitely hit the local watering holes with satellite. Too many NY and Dolphin fans in my area though. My best friend is a cowgirl fan( he has Tony Fritsch and Randy White(sp) jerseys from the old days). We grew up in D.C. and I have to give him credit for never wavering.

Ray, are you on east or west coast? South Florida?

Smack,
Of course we do, but we also have wives and children.
I determined back when I saw all kinds of guys going to watch these games I'd only do it a few times each season.

Because I am less of a fan?
Bite your tongue!
I am in agony each week when not seeing the Skins!

It is more a matter of what are you willing to give up that is dear to you, for something that is more important?

I couldn't get by without my Sunday Ticket. All's I hear about are the dang Carolina Pansies. People in this area seem to forget that Washington used to be their "home" team.

Ray - go on ebay. I'm betting you can find a full game of SB XVII.

I was in college for XXVI. Watched it in a dorm TV lounge with a bunch of fake fans who got bored. ppphhhpppttt

If you can swing the $, Sunday Ticket is completely worth it.
Viscount Diddy said they're negotiating to get the games streamed on line next season.

SF-I was in college too for that SB. I remember "painting" the bathroom we shared with our suite mates with shaving cream. Wrote Redskins all over everything!

I read just about every day to see what Jason has to say, have been checking the WPost sports section since it went on line in 95... reading about Skins.

I listen to the games on web and get to see a few each year.

Redskins.com should have a copy of each SB victory available for purchase!
You know they would sell....
What are they thinking?

Ray - I'm wondering maybe nfl films has exclusive rights to the SBs and not the teams.

You'd think they'd cash in on the whole thing but maybe they want to hold on to be able to make the zillion different specials like America'S Game.

Speaking of NFL Films--did y'all hear the FBI is having NFL Films help them with the video from that armored car robbery up in PA a couple days ago. Who'd have thought NFL Films would have better technology than Big Brother??

Posted by: NC ICU RN | October 6, 2007 12:10 AM | Report abuse

Agreed, Ray. I'll go even further and suggest deluxe edition treatment for the entire original TV broadcast of each SB -- commercials and everything. The possibilities are limitless... Commentary tracks from players and coaches... Audio tracks of the original broadcast play-by-play by each team's "homer" radio team... Cultural commentary on the ads and halftime shows a la "I Love the '80s"... Add in supplemental stuff from NFL Films and you'd have an incredible package right there. Put me down for three.

No Secrets (version 2)

We have no draft picks
We trade just about everything
And of all those good players we have passed
Or how they didn't last
We have a cast of characters from Smoot to Lloyd B
We're living Dan Snyder's fantasies
And though we know now better since we keep seeing more
Sometimes we wish
Often we wish
That you never did some of those dumb trades of yours

The front office was cold
Management was empty but for one
Except for your pal Vinnie the Bum
And you're still not foolin' anyone
Then Saint Joe came, you begged and asked for him to come
Still some of the choices seem so dumb
And later when you raised season ticket prices even more
Most times we wish
Oft times we wish
That we'd never, never seen some of those dumb adverts of yours

In the name of openness, in the name of what is fair
You sometimes answer our questions
But they don't really go anywhere

And though we know you say that it's the Skins that you adore
Most times we wish
Often we wish
That we'd never, never, never heard all of those dumb moves of yours
All of those dumb moves of yours
All of those dumb moves of yours

We've had no GM's
Your record is still not so very good now.

"Wasn't that kids name Jeffrey Mayer"

Yes, though the O's may have gotten a (very) modest amount of revenge by not drafting him after his college career ended

"Wasn't this what caused the O's to go down the tubes?"

In that series, yeah it probably did. However, Peter Angelos is the man most (solely) responsible for the long term decline of the franchise, and it's probably going to get worse as the Nats improve in the coming years.

Wine + tequila + champagne = the feeling of death at my doorstep. Looks like I lost the bet...EXCEPT, my crazy girl was drunker than me last night. I was there at RFK on this day in Dec. 1982
It was really fun.
Notice how we cheered with the thought of old #3 coming on to kick a FG that was not a chip shot by any means.
Lots of confidence in Moseley to win the game, and he did.

Great memory for me a 19 year old at the time!

No, I was not present that day... back to college you know, but enjoyed this game very much. It was the first playoff game for our Skins since the 76 season.

This is 1982 season first round of playoffs:

Listen and see how Coach Joe was instrumental in finding the backup who he prepared in case of injury and sure enough Monk did get injured.
Coach Joe may not be greatest now, but we cannot minimize what he did for us, to spoil us folks.

it's almost the end of this thread so lend me your ears for a non-football related thing...

My review of the iPhone:

I never owned any apple product before the iphone and i probly will never own a mac or an ipod. So this review is pretty unbiased.

iphone is not a phone. it is a machine with features like e-mail, google maps, you-tube, itunes, ipod, and the phone.

i have been traveling a lot, yes more than even diddy. while traveling i can check my personal e-mail with one click. i can read this stupid blog and post on it. i can read the blog while in the air because the iphone has a "airplane safe mode". i can't surf or make calls but i can still use the iphone.

my recent travels had me stuck with my 3 year old for 11 hours. so i went on itunes/podcast and downloaded 1 hour of free stuff like blue's clues, story time, dora, sesame...

i don't have to show her how to use it. i just hand it to her and she does the rest. no i'm not claiming my kid to be a genius but the machine is that simple to use. it didn't come with a manual.

it is truely a must have for those times when you need a break from "the brat".

and i have been traveling in uknown territories and i never feel lost because of google maps on the iphone. (the next version will have GPS in it. so i'd wait for that if you want GPS.)

i don't have to pay $5 per 20 minutes at airports to get my skins/sports fix.

so if you have kids, travel, sports fan, need a phone, and ohh like music, this machine is for you. price, yeah it's too damn high.

x-mas is right around the corner!

haiLL!

sf, i'm still looking for a place to watch the game. i'm thinking about cheers in west sac...?

Up The Hammers - I agree that if me or you starts a blog on our personal webpage then we should post whatever is on our mind. But Jasno's blog is *the* Skins blog for the washington post (lead Skins publication in the world). This posting got a prime link on the sports webpage (bold link at the top). Despite how Dan Snyder pretends to be aloof, and not know who Jasno is, he does. And I guarantee he reads "An Open Letter to Dan Snyder" from the lead Skins writer at the post. So with this rare opportunity to speak directly to Dan Snyder, Jasno asks Dan to buy a soccer team. I think there are 100 more relevant Skins related items that would have been worthy of such an open letter. How about moving the Skins from terrible Raljon back to new stadium at RFK site? How about "Hire a GM" (open letter on this would have made more sense in January). How about support a creative charity effort (like the very cool New Orleans effort Jasno worked on last year)? I like Jason's articles and blog in general -- but not this time.

I don't know why folks want St. Joe to call out Lloyd publicly. It's not his style, nor should it be. How would you like it if your boss sent a company wide email every time you screwed up? Everyone can see that Lloyd is a misfit and probably a problem child. Just let it go, as the 'Skins will during the offseason.

In the meantime, we're fans and our moral obligation is to beat dead horses continually...

>How would you like it if your boss sent a >company wide email every time you screwed >up?

If I was one of the highest paid employees at my job and put out as little effort as the WR does, I would LOVE if it was only a company wide e-mail, because that meant my undeserving butt still had a job.

Lloyd does need to be called out. We aren't just talking about some guy who is going through a slump. He had the WORST statistical season for a starting WR, far and away. And what does he do for an encore, he starts the season by getting beat easily on a jump ball to the end zone. If the Skins didn't already have a depth problem at the position, I would say he deserves to be deactivated for the rest of the season. It's addition by subtraction.

Or are we all just happy that Gibbs looked awake? Does the fact that he was WRONG count for nothing?

>>> "Lloyd does need to be called out. "

And you don't think St. Joe and WR coach Stan Hixon call Lloyd out in meetings, on the sideline, and during games and practice? These things should not be played in the media as theatre to benefit the fans. It should and is being kept in house and being dealt with internally. It's fairly obvious given the signing of an ancient receiver and a receiver with bug eyes that the coaches have lost all confidence in Lloyd.

Hey, not much in this quiet time. Jasno's article for tomorrow pretty much tells it like it is. Skins need to force the Lions into dink/dunk/10 yards, whereby they let a turnover ... rather than allow the big play/deep ball. His article doesn't say much about what the O needs to do (though he suggests alot of O scoring will be necessary). Myself, I think I'm with St. Joe on this piece. BALANCE!

This bit of drama is a day late and a dollar short. Does go to show that Gibbs does not believe a 2-1 record means very much at this point. Somehow this game-time attitude has never been embraced by the players - if it had, things would have been turned around long ago. I wish I was more confident that I will see a different Skins team on the field today, but I have fears of watching Kitna torch the defense for 400+ aerial yards. Even though they were destroyed by Philly, they still threw for 400+ yards and scored 28 points. That's good enough to beat the Skins.
