From what I hear the meeting between Dan Snyder and Jim Schwartz, Tennesee's defensive coordinator, is taking place today (probably at Morton's, if history is an indicator). Joe Gibbs has been in the building all day and consulted with Dan for much of Wednesday, but is not taking part in the interviews.
By all accounts this is an interview for the head coaching gig. That's how everyone in this building is taking it. It's not being perceived as a chance to line up someone to make a lateral move (ie hire Schwartz to run the defense under Gregg Williams but give him more money and a better title than he has with the Titans). If that is to the contrary I will let you know, but without a doubt the vibe here is that this is the start of the process to see who will replace Joe Gibbs.
This is the first interview and I am sure several more will follow with other candidates. And the team must comply wih the Rooney Rule, obviously. as well. Four more teams will become fair game once the games are over the weekend, and I hear guys like Colts assistant Jim Caldwell and Seattle assistant Jim Mora could be candidates. I would be very surprised if the Redskins did not reach out to several coaches next week once the NFL is down to its Final Four.
Marty Schottenheimer's agent told me his client is certainly intetrested in a return to the NFL in the right position, but that the Redskins have not contacted him. Rex Ryan has not been contacted either. Word from Bill Cowher's camp continues to be that he is happy doing what he is doing.
Also, if you are scoring at home, here is a list Jason Reid put together of teams who the Redskins definitely have NOT asked for permission to interview a coach under contract to this point: San Diego, San Francisco, New Orleans, Buffalo, Houston, Cincy, Houston, Philly, St. Louis, Pitt. Still waiting to hear back from several other teams but those clubs reported no contact from the Skins.
