Coin Toss: Chris Hanburger in a landslide?

By Washington Post editors

Well, if the voters in our poll are correct, another Redskins player, Chris Hanburger, will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Saturday evening. As of shortly before noon, you're voting 96% to 3% in favor of Hanburger's selection.

A biased sample? Maybe. Some readers see a legitimate debate.

MistaMoe, for example, had this to say: "Tough call, this one.
Why?: the group that's up for HOF consideration is a collection of a lot of very deserving players.
Not that Hanburger is not, but do you vote him in, and not, say Ed Sabol or Willie Roaf?
And given the usual redskin bias infecting the sports media, I doubt Hanburger gets in."

jmeaicp, however, believes: "There should be no doubt. He should have been HOF years ago. Nice to see the senior committee recognizing this great Redskins linebacker. It was a pleasure to have been able to watch him play."

What's your opinion?

....there is always FA to get DL. I'm not sure Taylor is worth #10. If we could trade back, then I'm fine with PT.

Use FA to add defensive linemen?

So far, we've added the following defensive linemen via FA:

Albert Haynesworth, Ma'ake Kemoteau, Anthony Bryant, Adam Carriker, Vonnie Holliday, Darrion Scott, Andre Carter, Phil Daniels, and Joe Joseph

In other words, discounting Kedric Golston and Jeremy Jarmon Free Agency has been the only way we've added defensive linemen.

The revolutionary idea is to draft elite players who make your scheme work.

It's the kind of thing they do in Ballmer, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, NE, Indy, Chi-town,...

Your attempt at engaging the masses by quoting some of the posters is a nice step for the Post-Reid blog.

Now, if you can get someone with a decent work ethic, objective view of the team, and some basic journalistic/NFL tendencies to run the blog, you may be on to something.

In other words, find the Anti-Reid. How he got that columnist job will go down as a mystery on par with the origins of Stonehenge, the story of Atlantis and the whereabouts of Jimmy Hoffa and Amelia Earhart.

What was a very disappointing first year in Jim Haslett's 3-4 defense?? getting to the quarterback
Ironically, the Cleveland Browns also had 40 sacks in 2009 and then 29 in 2010. Neither team won more than six games either year.

The worst part was that over the final eight games, the Redskins had just 11 sacks. They hardly applied pressure on quarterbacks, giving them plenty of time to pick apart 31st ranked secondary in the league.

Just how ugly are the Redskins sack totals? Let's take a look:

2010: 29 sacks (25th in the NFL)
2009: 40 sacks (8th in the NFL)
2008: 24 sacks (28th in the NFL)
2007: 33 sacks (16th in the NFL)
2006: 19 sacks (32nd in the NFL)
2005: 35 sacks (20th in the NFL)

Huh, I always thought Cliff Battles was the first draft pick, and it's hard to believe Stephen Davis was the first guy to rush for 1,000 yards in 3 consecutive years, I know Brown was the first 1,000 yard rusher for us, maybe that's why I got mixed up. Good quiz though, I know I talk a lot of schtick, I really do love the Redskins and could talk about them night and day.

I will continue to give the NFL HOF sideways glances until - at minimum - I witness the inductions of Hanburger, Pat Fischer, Joe Jacoby and Brian Mitchell.

Add Len Hauss to that list too weather I am aging myself or not.

The HOF is lame for allowing writers to have so much control. It's a joke that someone like Art Monk waited so long and Michael "I want some crack" Irvin goes in first. Then, you have other crybabies like Harry "No one would know me if it weren't for LT" Carson who complain their way in.

Don't talk about numbers. If that's all that mattered, Namath wouldn't have gotten a sniff.

Don't talk to me about unbiased fairness relative to consideration. If Darrell Green isn't a 'unanimous' first ballot selection.....WHO THE FU*K IS????

What a gip.

The Redskins were 24th in the NFL in time of possession per game primarily because they were 30th in rushing offense and 31st in rushing attempts. The lack of emphasis on the run game equaled less time with the ball.
The funny thing was that the ‘Skins were tied for 15th in average yards per carry. Not the pinnacle of prowess, but solid enough to where there should have been a commitment to ground game. However, they failed to establish the run game all year, which was a mistake in light all the close contests and the fact they were picking up 4.2 YPC.
The Redskins played 12 games within a touchdown or less of their opponent. They ended up with a 3-4 record in the seven games where they ran the ball less than 25 times. In a pair of those matchups they attempted fewer than 20 carries and went 0-2 in those games. They were 3-2 in the five games where they called more than 25 runs. Sensing a pattern?

Problem is, Moe was wrong and already admitted it. Sabol's election has no bearing on Hanburger's election. Sabol is part of the 15 nominees that can have no more than 5 inductees. Hanburger is one of two senior nominees where both can be elected without regard to the group of fifteen. With the senior nominees the class can grow to seven, otherwise it can only be five.

On your list, I am happy keeping AC, AB and VH. Add to that KG and JJ, and we have a good support DL. We'll have to wait to see who is available in FA, but if Ngata, Paul Solaia, Charles Johnson or Ray Edwards comes out, I'd jump all over him.

I thought the reason for the seniors committee was to figure out new ways to mess with the freshmen.

I grew up watching Hanburger play, and he should have been in long ago. His major problem is he played on alot of bad defenses. He was a smallish outside lb that sacked the qb on a regular basis, even without a good dline. He was on a good defense when Allen came to coach, and shined with that defense also. He went to Pro Bowl nine times, more than any other Redskin. And was elected All Pro 4 times. How can he not be in the HOF. And he was a team player, not one to talk about his own stats. He didn't celebrate after a sack like today's players, he acted like normal and went back to his huddle. Highly underated player and I hope he makes it now.

I'm really enjoying this new interactive redskins insider, it creates debate and is actually interesting to read! Wahoo!

Chris Hanburger, should have been in a long, long time ago. How about JERRY SMITH ? He held records for his position for almost 30 years. LARRY BROWN ? If Leroy Kelly, and Floyd Little got in but no LARRY BROWN ? LEN HAUSS ? Pat Fischer? (Roger Wherli, but no Pat Fischer COME ON!)JOE JACOBY ?
The Hall needs to start w/ Chris Hanburger, then start making up for lost time (Start w/JERRY SMITH next year).
