Asst. coaches worry about pay during a lockout

By Mike Jones

Salaries for Washington Redskins' coach Mike Shanahan and the rest of the NFL's head coaches are believed to be guaranteed for the coming year in the event of a lockout, but assistant coaches across the league could face significant financial losses if the standoff between owners and players drags on for an extended period of time.

The rules differ from team to team, and in some cases from coach to coach. But most assistants could suffer a decrease in pay or even lose their jobs in the event of a lengthy lockout, officials said.

"Every team has their own clauses in the contracts. Many of them are similar, but there are some differences," said Larry Kennan, executive director of the NFL Coaches Association. "Most treat the coaches pretty fairly. It might be three to six months they'll go into the lockout before they start cutting pay. Some, though, if there's a lockout in March...will start losing pay immediately but they'll still be expected to work full-time. Other teams are saying if there are no games missed, the coaches will be reimbursed. There's nothing really we can do about it."

"Of 32 teams," he added, "20, 21 really treat their coaches fair and with respect. There are about 10 or 12 that do not."

The Redskins, Kennan says, are among those teams that treat their coaches well. Kennan said he believed the Redskins' assistant coaches will receive their full salaries for up to six months, and if the lockout continues, from that point on, will receive 50 percent of their usual pay.

"Dan [Snyder] has always treated his coaches fairly," Kennan said.

Two sources familiar with the contracts of Redskins' assistant coaches said that some, if not all, of them would receive as much as six months of full pay in the event of a lockout. After that their pay would be cut in half.

The sources, who declined to be named because they were not authorized to discuss the coaches' contracts, said the language may vary from coach to coach.

Washington Redskins' senior vice president Tony Wyllie said the team does not discuss its coaches' contracts.

Nevertheless, assistants around the league are wondering if the provisions in their contracts would stand up in the event of a protracted labor struggle. They are bracing for cutbacks this spring.

"I get calls every day: 'What do you know? Are they really going to do this? What does it mean for us?' Kennan said. "It's a difficult situation. Everybody's concerned."

For now, however, coaches have been instructed to go about their business as if nothing has changed. Over the past two weeks, Redskins coaches and officials have been in meetings preparing for free agency - whenever that signing period commences - and the draft. Next week, Shanahan and his assistants will head to Indianapolis to evaluate talent at the NFL combine.

The draft is certain to take place, but beyond that, league operations - just like the financial outlook for assistant coaches - are uncertain for the next few months.

Team owner Daniel Snyder was asked earlier this month whether a lockout might affect the team's staffing levels. He offered no assurances.

"First of all, I don't want to speculate on 'if,'" he said. "... I actually believe and I'm confident that they'll work out a deal."

Asked if he has a contingency plan for his staffing in the event of a lockout, Snyder said: "There's always planning for all sorts of things, but I'm not focused on that. I'm hopeful and optimistic that he'll get something done. I think [Goodell] can do it."

Staff writer Rick Maese contributed to this report.

I wonder if there has been a high number of asst coaches who have gone to college programs due to this possibility. I know Olivadotti took a college job similar to one he'd held for us. Not sure what the motivation was, though. Might also make some good college coaches/asst coaches stay put for now.

hess- It's the same plant. New name.

Flying Dog Brewery is a beer brewery now located in Frederick, Maryland. Originally opening in 1990 as a brewpub, it became the first brewery to open in Aspen in over 100 years, and one of the first brewpubs in the Rocky Mountain region. In 1991, Flying Dog’s “Doggie Style” was bottled and won the “The Best Pale Ale in America” award at the Great American Beer Festival.

The reputation of Flying Dog beers grew quickly, and demand soon exceeded the brewpub’s capacity. So, in 1994 Flying Dog opened a 50-barrel brewery in Denver, Colorado from which its ales were distributed to more than 45 states of the United States. Flying Dog purchased a second brewery located in Frederick, Maryland in May 2006, and in January 2008 the last bottles rolled off the Denver line and all production was moved to the Maryland facility. According to their web site, this location is where "70% of Flying Dog Beer is already being brewed." Accounting, sales, marketing and other administrative functions have remained largely unaffected by this change and their headquarters remains in Denver. Currently, the brewery has a capacity to brew 100,000 barrels of beer per year.

Flying Dog Brewery is noted for using the unusual art of Ralph Steadman, best known as the illustrator of the works of Hunter S. Thompson, on its labels. In 2005, the brewery created a new beer in Thompson’s [1] honor, Gonzo Imperial Porter [2]. Initially in limited-release in 750mL bottles, the Gonzo Imperial Porter is now one of the regular offerings of the brewery.

And Chris Samuels really wanted to be a HS assistant coach in Alabama... right.

Better to be home, and not be paid, rather then being perceived as crossing the NFLPA picket line sitting at the Park....and STILL not being paid.

#90 marcus johannsen, rookie center. dude has jets, can pass and shoot, kills penalties. the thing about him is he doesn't make alot of mistakes, even being a rookie.

#30 michal neuvirth, rookie goalie. he'll be in goal tonite for the caps. now this guy looks like a little kid, but he is doing a good job and won the winter classic.

#26 matt hendricks, center. my kind of player, plays both ways, kills penalties, disruptive, this guy will do whatever it takes to win, no belly-aching

Ipswich Ale (Ipswich Massachusetts) which also makes Offshore Ale here in my hometown on Martha's Vineyard..is amazing.. It is bottled cold and transported and stored cold..so, no pasteurization needed. Whereas a beer that is bottled and can be displayed unrefrigerated, is pasteurized and loses the micro-brew taste completely.

Anyone (except Dan) wearing a Skins logo and comes to the Offshore Ale micro brew (brewpub) in Martha's Vineyard this summah....I'll buy you a Growler (jug) of Offshore Ale..AND give you directions to the not-so-secret super model nude beach.

Wasn't he like a linebackers coach and then was demoted to assistant when Shanahan came onboard? Dude was probably seeing the current staff didn't have a Jones for him and he left. The fact that he was only able to get an assistant's job in the college ranks says maybe Shanny was right for demoting him.

Would love to know the names of the "10-12" teams that treat their assistant coaches like crap. And I'm surprised to hear that Danny Boy treats his well. But if I asked my employees to work 18 hour days for half pay they would probably laugh in my face. Sounds like the assistants need a union.

The players need better retirement benefits and the owners need a rookie wage scale. Other than that it's just more greed different day.

Years ago I was in London and I fell in love with their draft ales. Never thought I'd ever get anything near as good here, because American brewers all pasteurized the flavor right out of beer. (That's the main reason Bud, etc. have to be ice cold to be good.) Then the American microbrewers like Sam Adams just compensated by adding more and more hops, which didn't work for me either. Now it seems like they are starting to get it. I've had some unpasteurized cask ales locally that were pretty good.

All right, I'll tell one. I took a bunch of Ecstasy with a couple girls homecoming night one year. My apartment was right on the main drag and it was packed with cars and people. Bumper to bumper...nobody moving. I ended up running down the road naked...right into a cop. The cop said, "I'm not touching the naked guy, where are your clothes." Right then one of the girls walked up with them. The cop let me go. The whole time people were honking their horns, hanging out the windows and cheering. About a month later I was at a party and a bunch of people were watching some homemade homecoming videos. I was standing in the back talking to this girl and I noticed that the video that was on was of me, naked, in the road at homecoming. everyone had stopped and was looking at me.

Sister's 21st B-day

We started drinking Busch Light keg beer around noon. All of her roomates and friends, my friends it was fun.

Well, we go to this bar called the Other Place, and I had one of those "been drinking all day bout' to wet my pants" feeling hit.

Strobe lights were confusing, couldn't find the bathroom.

Decided it was a good idea to relieve myself on the dance floor. Peeing on girls flip-flops, screaming, the whole deal.

I remember some goon squeezing my neck like he was trying to pop my head off.

I woke up on the sidewalk.

God I miss those days.

I stopped taking it, and now I am all over the place, in a controlled way. If I want to focus on something, I look like a dang genius, but otherwise I am seen as a goofball. I don't think ADHD really exist. I just think we are blessed with the ability to 100% honestly not give a dang, and the ability to focus and do things with 300% more gusto then the next mark. Call it what you want, I say I am blessed.

yeah... your "0utgoing" was definitely out.

My best "drunk with the Skins" was Carlisle in the late 80's (after SB XXII). Early in my career I was market rep'ing a few of players. We left after evening bed-check...and had to be back before morning curfew (another bed-check).... So, after drinking till nearly blind at the local Carlisle college bars.. we ran back to Dickinson Hall..and I assisted in pushing these big as-s bodies back into their dorm room windows..ground level. Unfortunately, one of the players picked the wrong window to climb into.. It was Gibb's window (botton floor by the back door).. and Gibbs was AWAKE. Funny as shi-t.. not only did we push this future HOF'er into Gibb's window, we threw a six-pack of beer in after him. So, there he was, looking right at Gibbs, with a six pack at this feet...
He was on the field in full pads 30 minutes later.

One of my fave drunk-in-DC mammaries:

Heavily buzzed & heading to Georgetown from Downtown at about 10pm on a Saturday night, after playing lots of pool at the Insect (Bug) Club on a freezing winter’s Saturday night… my buddy and I were stopped in my MR2 at a red light at K and Connecticut, when a limo full of uber-drunk high school party girls in frou frou dresses stops in front of us (on K)… One gets out and, after walking a few feet from the car, in the middle of K street and with a ton of traffic going in every direction, she hikes up her dress, squats and pees… like a racehorse… for about 1-2 minutes. It’s so cold out that there’s steam coming up off the pavement, billowing around her. By the time it was over, all the jammed-up cars were just sitting there, not even honking, taking it in. A special moment.

carlson made the mistake that led to the first goal of the game. he was called up at the end of last season and played well, but he's making alot of mistakes this year. defenseman are to protect the puck, and he hasn't done a very good job of that this year, and he knows it. only three penalties in last nights game. hope we meet in the finals
