Collins comes in for Campbell (updated)

When the third quarter began, the Redskins had a new quarterback: Todd Collins was in for Jason Campbell. This is Collins's first action of the season, and represents a potentially monumental shift for Coach Jim Zorn. Collins had not played in the 21 previous games of Zorn's career.

The FedEx Field crowd cheered the move when Collins took the field, and he completed his first pass since Dec. 6, 2008, to wide receiver Santana Moss for a 42-yard gain. Campbell (46.1 passer rating) was 9-of-16 for 89 yards and one interception.

Running back Clinton Portis limped back onto the field after the halftime break, and backup Ladell Betts was in the game on the first drive of the half. Portis has an ankle sprain and his return is questionable.

Well, Todd Collins at least got us a field goal range.

Well, that's a start. Maybe next week we will see a new game plan as well.

How 'bout some MM at RB?

3 points, wow....break up the redskins...

My primary concern now is that if Collins pulls out this (and maybe some other) games, this would keep Zorn with the Skins for a while. No more Zorn please.

I don't remember seeing a wide-view stadium shot, but it sure looks like there are a LOT of empty seats out there today, even in the lower bowl. Any word on this on the radio or otherwise? Maybe Feinstein's call for a boycott got some traction.

yeah.. I agree.. I would rather see the Skins tank completely and get Zorn jettisoned.. Now the Skins will probably go 8-8 and Snyder will give Zorn an extension.
2009, another waste of a top 5 Defense, like the last 2 years.

It's depressing. If it wasn't already apparent that this team has no future, subbing in one of the NFL's oldest players for one of the team's few first-round picks of the past decade just makes it that much more obvious. The Skins are going to get worse before they get better.

Posted by: manalive | October 18, 2009 2:46 PM | Report abuse

TC in = at least an attempt to salvage something this season. He is NOT the answer but he is the best we have for the rest of this season.
For all of you KOOL-AID drinkers who castigated my post about wanting the WHINER, where are you. Oh yeah, stats, O-line, No rcvrs are all that need to be fixed. An average intelligent QB who can understand how to run what play is called but only can read primary rcvr and dump off is only good for mop-up and occasional work. Letting your feelings dictate your analysis just shows how smart you really are.
season 5-11 maybe 6-11 with TC rest of year.

campbell and portis for a couple of late round draft picks.

Posted by: Redskins001 | October 18, 2009 2:50 PM | Report abuse

Ugh. Why not have Collins start a game and practice with the starters all week? Oh, wait. We don't have any starters.

And why is Randle El still fielding punts?

Dan Snyder needs to hold a press conference and explain why he calls himself a fan. This team has gone beyond the embarrassment stage. I don't even know what term to use.

Posted by: messykat | October 18, 2009 2:51 PM | Report abuse

CAMPBELL and PORTIS will get you maybe a 2nd and a 5th rd pick.

OK, I came back from the can to find Channel 9 switched away from the Skins telecast?

Posted by: Scyphus | October 18, 2009 3:03 PM | Report abuse

zorn is done, he is dead and he is starting to stink... he hitched his wagon on campbell and now he makes a change; too little, too late. he is out of his league and needs to go somewhere where he can be a position coach again. we need a new qb, offensive coordinator, head coach, general manager and owner or maybe they should look for new fans to go along with the fans who are too stupid to see that this, once proud franchise has become the laughing stock of the nfl....

Posted by: Phillip258 | October 18, 2009 3:05 PM | Report abuse

TC more of spark for team. also hasnt been on end of OL lack of support since beginning of season. JC isnt the problem. OL, lack of production from WR, poor fit in offense, no depth and bad coaching, front office moves are. hence, now the score is 6-6

Posted by: niko20009 | October 18, 2009 3:06 PM | Report abuse

I left the room for a minute, and when I came back CBS had gone to the Ravens game.

Give me a break - there's no O-line, no rush. So replace the quarterback: brilliant. And soon, Snyder will replace the coach. That'll help, too.

What a bunch of morons, running the team, and commenting on this board.

1. Is the stadium half empty?

2. Does Collins look good?

Any help is much appreciated.

Posted by: Pennsylhoya | October 18, 2009 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Problem is I think Snyder reads these message boards to learn how to run or ruin his team.

Posted by: Redskins001 | October 18, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

I hate to admit that our players are offensive!pulling jc was the right thing to do but our so-called playmakers suck

Posted by: dqhec | October 18, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Kind of hypocritical if you ask me considering his stick about sticking with Campbell against the Bucs. But Collins is a great back up. With Colt and the rest a waste of roster space. With Heyer (undrafted) starting at left tackle the plethora of QBs drafted over the years only adds to Snyder's drama-over-success business plan.

Posted by: chavez66 | October 18, 2009 3:32 PM | Report abuse

I guess it is the coach, talent and the system after all! Zorn, thanks for changing the quarterback just to prove that point, but it will cost you your job because Danny will never blame or fire Vinny. Good luck in your next team! Seriously.

Posted by: JohnWWW | October 18, 2009 3:38 PM | Report abuse

anyone know what the point of those things at the ends of the fields that say "redskins" in them is? Are they some sort of special place where the players aren't allowed to go? Everyone seems afraid to go in there.

Posted by: Pennsylhoya | October 18, 2009 3:42 PM | Report abuse

lol we are a 3 stooges routine

Posted by: cmann083@yahoo.com | October 18, 2009 3:44 PM | Report abuse

I am surprised to see so many "loyal" fans of Danny and Vinny at the stadium. Once it becomes apparent that there is no more fan support and will be playing under idiotic management, not even Danny's "Confederate" money can entice good players or coaches here, even in a season of no cap in 2010. This is so depressing, but what can the fans do when the team is owned by a "bully". There has got to be a sickness or syndrome named for suffering Redskins fans have suffered under Danny.

Wow. To be honest, at halftime, I had the thought that it might be time to see if Collins could jumpstart the offense. Campbell looked like he'd had it. But, jeez, Collins was way, way worse. It's not the quarterbacks. Or, at least, it's not JUST the quarterbacks. It's the entire organization. BLOW IT UP! BLOW IT UP!

Don't think we have to worry about that scenario... the skins don't have the players to compete (period). We should be screaming "FIRE THE GUY RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING IN THE PLAYERS, CERRATO!!"

Posted by: cedric_lockhart | October 18, 2009 4:09 PM | Report abuse

You guys know what's going to happen now, right? The team's going to go 4-12, and Snyder's going to "take" everyone's advice - in his typical ridiculous Snyder way - by throwing $40 million at Mike Shanahan and making him the dreaded coach-GM combo. Then he's going to sink another hundred million dollars on mercenary veterans instead of drafting a new core for the team, and we're all going to jump right back on the "This could be the year!" bandwagon.

This thing is doomed. The sooner we stop pumping money into it, the better off we'll all be.

The worst and most disgusting loss I have seen in my 40 years on this earth as a Deadskins fan!!!! I am in absolute shock and absolutely speechless. I want to apologize to everyone on the WaPo blogs for my insanely optimistic predictions for the 2009 Redskins. I could not have been any more wrong. Please feel free to tee off on me, I deserve it.

I will be taking some time off from the blogs except to continue to apologize and occasionally respond to comments that are addressed to me.

I still love the Redskins with all my heart, but I'm not okay right now.

Take care.

It's about freaking time they brought TCin. Sorry about the loss, but it's hardly surprising with everything else going on.

Let's not get embroiled in a QB controversy this week. Just give Collins his snaps with the first team during practice this week -- and keep Campbell's backside firmly planted on the pines.

Maybe Sherm Lewis can even develop or call a few plays specifically for TC's skillset.
