Cooley Not Practicing; Defense Braces for Run (Update 2)

Jason La Canfora reports that Chris Cooley is not taking part in practice; we'll see what Jim Zorn says about that later today. ... Marcus Washington and Fred Smoot have done very little in practice and are not involved in any team drills. H.B. Blades was taking Washington's spot and Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers were working as the starting corners; Leigh Torrence working as the nickel. Kareem Moore is practicing.

Jason Reid checks in:

Although Marques Colston, New Orleans top wide receiver the last two seasons, is expected to miss four weeks after having thumb surgery, the Saints still have a formidable offense led by quarterback Drew Brees and running back Reggie Bush, Redskins free safety LaRon Landry said.

"No doubt, you can't take anything away from those guys," he said. "Reggie Bush, being on the outside, he can be deadly. They've got great speed at wide receiver, guys who can go up and go get the ball.

"Brees is going to put it up there and those guys go get it. And the majority of the time they come down with it, no matter if they've got great coverage on them or not. We've got to play great all-around defense."

Bush is expected to be a top priority in defensive coordinator Greg Blache's game plan. In New Orleans' 24-20 victory over Tampa Bay, Bush rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries and had game-highs with eight receptions for 112 yards.

With 7 minutes 35 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Bush caught a swing pass from Brees and outran the Buccaneers' defense for a 42-yard touchdown that provided the go-ahead score.

Bush lines up in the backfield, in the slot and out wide, so defenses "have to know where he's at at all times on the field," Landry said. "When you put that guy out there as a receiver, as a threat like that, a green light goes on. You know where he's at then. In the backfield, he could get a handoff, or it could be a play-action pass, a screen or anything.

"But with him at receiver, you say, 'Hmm, something's up. Why is Reggie Bush at receiver?' He's going to be a big part of the game plan, but they have a big package on
offense. You just can't single him out as the biggest threat."

Gee I wonder why Cooley isn't practicing. Could it be that he's a total idiot and (via his website video) punched holes in a piece of drywall to recreate his NFL Fantasy Files video? What a f'ing moron. If he hurt his hand doing that they should just cut him.

As a rhetorical technique, when someone says "clearly" or "obviously", that is the tip that what they are saying is neither clear nor obvious.

This is usually the case, with the exception of the one where the naked guy wrapped in Saran Wrap walks into the psychiatrist's office and the psychiatrist replies, "I can clearly see you're nuts."

LiL off topic but..

Has anyone else paid any attention to the Ravens new head coach. He looks and sounds more commanding than Zorn. I have a feeling he's going to be a really good coach. Reminds me of a young Bill Cowher.

I just feel like our QB and Head Coach have the command presence of a lieutentant, rather than a General. I'm worried the rest of this team feels the same way.

That spells mutiny and complete anarchy.

From the Times:

Colleague Ryan O'Halloran reports from the field that tight end Chris Cooley, who rarely misses a day, isn't practicing. We'll find out why after practice.

Cornerbacks Shawn Springs (calf) and Fred Smoot (hip), both injured last week, are in pads. So is rookie receiver Malcolm Kelly, who has yet to play in a game because of a balky knee. And special teams ace Khary Campbell, a last-minute scratch last week because of an ailing quad, is riding the exercise bike and not practicing.

A. You can never be to sure with those knees that have alledgedly been termed "chronic knee problems" throughout.

B. Make him really want it, let him understand that it's an honor to play in the NFL (that's word to showing up out of shape for camp) , keeping him anxious on the sideline this Sunday and through out next week will really make him want it more come week 3 and most likely this will translate to him hitting the ground running.

C. A golden opportunity for that other rookie WR (what's his name Devin Harris ?) to get some uninterrupted playing time to cut his teeth on before M. Kelly comes in next week and eats it all up.

D. What a perfect team to break yourself in on than the Cardinals !!!

That's all you got? You're no Earl. You're more like a vassal, pawn, or pissant.

Look, the doctor knows when the guy is healthy. We rely on trained professionals, not vassals.

Playing in the NFL is a privilege? Duh. It's a job. The Redskins drafted him in the second round. Now he has to deliver. Sitting on the bench and getting paid for nothing, that's a privilege.

Devin Thomas (not Harris) has to compete for his job. He doesn't get it handed to him.

A "perfect" team to break in against? Whichever one the 'Skins are playing this week.

From PFT:

As it turns out, that whole injury schadenfreude thing applies not only to NFL fans but also to NFL teams.

Per a league source, the Washington Redskins were “doing handstands and somersaults” in response to the news that Saints receiver Marques Colston will miss Sunday’s game between the two teams.

As we hear it, the Redskins think that having Colston out of play will make it much easier to control tight end Jeremy Shockey and running back Reggie Bush.

Not sure what to make of that??

Anyway, PFT went on to talk about Alex Smith going on IR for the 49ers, and then talked about the Vikings, who in the same draft had the #7, and the #18 draft picks, and picked Troy Williamson, and Erasmus James, whom they have since traded for I believe 6th, and 7th round picks.

OUCH!!!

Actually, I'm surprised he hasn't been picked up. Must be something not in evidence...character flaw, or unreported injury.

"NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The mother of Titans quarterback Vince Young said he indicated he doesn't want to play football and is "hurting inside and out."

Felicia Young said in Wednesday editions of The Tennessean that her son is tired of all the negativity he's faced after being booed during a 17-10 win Sunday over Jacksonville. On Monday, Titans coach Jeff Fisher called police to help find him.

"What would you think, if you were tired of being ridiculed and persecuted and talked about and not being treated very well, what would you do? What kind of decision would you make?" Felicia Young said "He may not want to deal with it (all), but you have to get to that point before you make that decision first.

"But we're not talking about football right now. We're talking about what would make him happy, and that is the most important thing.""

Remember the term "privilege" was used here in the context of a recommendation that the coarching staff hold Malcolm Kelly out of this week's game even if he's healthy enough to play. Something about teaching him a lesson about how special it is to play in the League.

That implies that coarches may be motivated by vindictiveness or anything else which contradicts the desire to put your best players on the field and give yourself the best chance to win every day. Which I think is preposterous.

So anyway, "privilege"
